I would really like some abilitiy to rally downed allies from a bit more distant away. Because sometimes teammates get downed in the middle of massive zerg or AoE spam spots around a Keep or something. (Especially the Melee Fighters)
There's builds/skills for that
Which is?
Elementalist (or was it Necromancer?) has a skill that rallies all allies in the target area, and give some health regeneration boost.
I was Ele, I didn't use it but I saw while doing my build some abilities to even res like 3 allies at once or rally not sure
I found downed state as a great feature. I died A LOT this weekend (I mean people were bashing reporters for being noobs... I was a bigger noob the first day or so damn it was so hard sometimes) and people were helping me from left and right.
Usally afterwards I would look for people who helped me and as soon as they were in trouble I would jump in and try to help them. Not to talk about the huge PVP fights where people went down from left and right and while being on the Guardian you ran up to people and got them on their feet - turning the tide of the battle by not fighting but by helping people.
- I agree that when you are stuck in an AOE (especially near forts in WvWvW) it is insta-death for you and all the people who try to resurrect you, which is a bit problematic.
- I wouldn't mind being able to crawl somewhere else indeed.
- I think it is a bit confusing (camera movement, darker screen, who are you targetting and how big is the damage, the AoE heals are affecting which players?) but maybe we just need to get used to it. At the moment, I'm more or less spamming the skills without much hope of achieving anything.
I generally found the downed state completely annoying and utterly useless. Most skills i found did not work at range, it would never hold target and i rarely ever recovered from a downed state except in DE type events where there were enough players to kill the npc's who had downed me. I realize however, that i was low level, without any traits that could affect me while downed, so i am reserving any change comments except the one below until i can find out how it plays later in the game.
I think a suicide button would be fine to add immediately as it would give the player the power to end the downed state immediately, if he/she so chooses.
My opinion relates only to the PVE i played this weekend. I did not PVP.
I love the downed state, compliments the action perfectly.. anyone looking for a give up button has other issues and some serious patience issues. Looks like you're just asking for easy mode because you find downed state too hard (I'm not saying you are but your arguements here are generally complaining that downed state makes things harder or that it doesn't make things 'easier'). Whatever happens to downed state, it will be the same for everyone so it will always be exactly the same for usefulness in PvP whether or not there is more or less to it.
I remember a moment in a previous beta test where me and a 'blue invader' downed each other at the same time and were fighting it out in downed state, there was no one else around.. it was hilarious and very enjoyable! I won in the end, which made it even better for me...
Downed state needs to stay. It's a mechanic that you need to learn when to take advantage of and when to try avoid it. If there is a rabbit nearby you can kill it to rally again.. ever think about stuff like that in PvP? It's also an effective way of making sure ranged attackers on walls can't easily just pick everyone off. When a zerg is bashing down a gate and defenders are only attacking from the walls it is very hard to thin out the group as they just get each other back up again... you gotta get down there and into the action to properly finished them off. It also works the opposite way, defenders on the walls can just get each other up again. Downed state is built into this game in more than the obvious ways.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
In a game where death seems to be a rather common occurance (a refreshing change from most MMOs), the downed state combined with other players' ability to help you back up is a very welcome feature. It's certainly not a world shattering feature, but it is one of many small parts that go on to make a huge difference; and it just fits so well into GW2's combat.
I was pleased to learn that this most definitely did not mean you would never die die. I was forced to revive at a waypoint just as often as I was able to get back on my feet. This system allows for death and difficulty while not being unnecessarily frustrating.
I liked it because I saw people going around checking the corpses after a battle in WvW, It was like a real battle just happened and we all wanted to make sure everyone was dead. I have never seen that in an mmo.
I generally found the downed state completely annoying and utterly useless. I don't get it. If you are in a position where you cannot recover from the downed state (ie. being beaten on by multiple enemies), then the downed state would only last 1-2 seconds anyway. In all other cases, you can usually escape. If you're at range and out of harms way, you could press 4 and heal yourself to full. If enemies and allies are around you, can you keep knocking enemies back with 2 while your allies revive you. If an enemy is low, you might be able to finish him off with 1. If you want to just get up instantly and try again at the risk of real guaranteed real death, press 3. I thought the variety of options were perfect for the many situations one might find oneself in. In all other situations where none of these options would suffice, you would die in a matter of seconds anyway.
I found it working perfectly, and adding flavour to combat, both in PvE and PvP. I just love annoying oponents in PvP making them waste seconds on the flag animation, and just before it ends, I simply port to another spot as a Thief, forcing them to waste even more time doing nothing, while the points tick ^^ Sometimes it's even possible to actually stand up in PvP, if you're lucky, so the state works as intended. In PvE it's even more useful, since people can rez you which saves you time running.
If people find somehow the Downed State to be such a penalty, then ANet can consider its implementation of death penalty successful.
When judging a feature, don't forget ANet did intend to refresh old mechanics with new ideas. So your judgement has to be "outside the box" too.

Plus the fact that it gives anybody the ability to resurrect at any time (even during combat). This lets more medic type personalities to express their will to take care of casualties, while attacker types will more naturally go to the front.

It's meant ot have a low percentage of success. Though I agree with the OP, a give up button would be nice. Great feelings when u come back from down. IN wvw this is going to be impossible unless you have teammates with you who will protect you. But not impracticle. I have gotten up from downed in a 1on 1 fight versus an elementist i managed to kill him with a mine that was thrown as i died and the bomb.
If the answer is "Nobody", then ANet can consider its implementation of death penalty successful. Nuff said.

2 bullets, 1 in the chest 1 in the head. Seriously there were people going around making sure no one came back, it was impressive, an added "thing u need to do".

Totally And for the "casualty checkers" it's a kind of pressure too, as some people can suddenly rez while you're checking another. This leads to send higher mobility classes to check, like casters. Another "group strategy to think"
"ok group 1, go scouting. Group 2, go back defending that point. Group 3, check the corpses. Group 2 will assist you if there is some comeback." etc

I agree with you that there should be a give up button. I have wound up in the downed state several times and had to wait for hte mob to kill me because there was no way I was getting away.
That said though, to my surprise, I found the downed state to be a MAJOR plus to this game. It adds a whole new dimension to combat, and really changes the way it is played. One hit kills in big fights are now completely okay because they don't "kill" you, they just "disable" you and you need help. They also allow players to play a more "support" role without resorting to health bar watching.
I also think that flawed perception about the downed state is a major reason that people think this game is too hard. A lot of folks probably look at being "downed" at "dying" and then whine when a big DE boss downs them in one hit. But really, this is working as intended. You are in a big team, and someone can help you up. That's part of the game, helping downed allies.
I kind of think that the whole "downed" mechanic is almost a stand-in for traditional healer. Instead of playing healer, you can play "combat medic."
I like it. While slightly more useful in PvE where you don't have the hordes of hell on you to make sure you really are dead, it is an additional twist to the game mechanics which to me is an order of magnitude mmore important than any visual, cosmetic, or other fluff.
I would really like some abilitiy to rally downed allies from a bit more distant away. Because sometimes teammates get downed in the middle of massive zerg or AoE spam spots around a Keep or something. (Especially the Melee Fighters)

Elemetalist gets one that either rally somone with regen (water attune), rally somone and urself if you die shortly after (fire attune), rally somone and teleport them to you (lightning) and rally 3 people and i think they get toughness (earth) or somthing along those lines.
glyph of renewal ressurects up to 3 nearby allies while attuned to water.
I really liked the downed state, first its a great balance pvp mechanism, and its also one of those old school rpg mechanism that was abandonned, so having it back and working well is really nice to see. Let be honest, until GW2, be downed in older rpg was just so fucking boring, waiting for a healer to come res you if you don't want to loose 20% xp from your level, anyone remember this in mmo history?
OP you can fight or not to try to recover or you can just let you die for a quick respawn. And usually if you die from an horrible death you will die for good really fast anyway. If you don't die often you will be able to travel back to you way point instantly. But if you want to fight to recover (its not always a good choice though, you might fight for a long time for nothing, so sometime you just better let you die for good), well on some class it really really help. You also need to trick (third skill) your opponent if they have too much health so they leave you alone so you can bandage, or being able to finish them when downed (finishing them will make you recover instantly).

How about they just remove it all together. You died, you've got a small chance of making it out alive. Something no othergame gives you.
