Raiderz? looks pretty cool, if its anything like Tera I am sure Id like it. I watched some of the videos the combat seemed kind of choppy. Is it as fluid as Tera's? Just curious, I want to try it out.
Let's see... have played both for about the same number of total hours in beta-
TERA - point at mob with mouse, use the exact same rotation of any typical fantasy MMO skills over and over and hit one button to dodge or block when the mob spends 2-3 seconds glowing telling you "hey, dummy, I'm going to hit you now."
All while being locked in place without being able to move while you are doing an over the top anime animation with a weapon 2-3 times your size.
Rely on gear, levels, HP potions, and pocket healers (especially for PvP.)
GW2 - nearly every attack can be done on the move (and most likely should be), you still have to aim yourself at the mob(s) and can hit multiple un-targetted enemies without tab-target with a lot of skills.
You don't get infinite dodge/block and have to choose when to use it tactically, as well as get traits/perks to make your dodge do different things to be more useful (stealth, heals, phantasms, buffs, debuffs, damaging attacks, etc.)
All classes (professions) are self suffient and can combo off of each other without having to be in a group, there are no pocket healers or tanks to hold aggro for you so you can face roll your DPS rotations.
So let's see...
Static, traditional trinity based combat with an action/aiming gimmick - TERA
Something new and different, a new model all together - GW2
You decide.
TERA is just your usual trinity based whack-a-mole health bar race (tanking, dps, healing) with a action/aiming gimmick designed to fool you into thinking combat revolves around anything other than grinding levels and gear.

Well it's still in beta but i found the combat to be just as smooth as Teras.Their is not alot between them to be fare.

Honestly when I read this I was just going to insult you for your narrow-mindedness - But, I'll just say that :
"You use the same rotation of skills in TERA"
You use an even smaller rotation of skills in Guild Wars.
"Trinity based combat"
Believe it or not, people like Trinity combat and it provides more meaningful PvP - Games would be simply ridiculous if all there were, were self-sufficient DPS classes. One of the biggest complains of Darkfall Online was that every character became a Jack of All Trade and no real teamwork was required beyond attacking the same target etc.
"Over the top animations, anime, animation lock"
Personal preference buddy, animation lock balances the game and it's how an action game is supposed to play - I'm sorry if you don't like it.
"Rely on Gear, Levels, Potion"
I'm not that big a fan of Gear grind, but everybody has the same level cap I don't see how people are going to have a level advantage over other people in the end game - And potions? Does GW2 not have potions?
GW2 also has gear, that give benefits - It's just less obvious.
"Nearly every attack can be done on the move."
I prefer realism and balance in my games to being able to shoot lazers out my eyes as I'm sprinting.
"GW2 doesn't have infinite dodge/blocks like in TERA and we have traits/perks"
TERA has a traits system, it's called Glyphs less extensive than GW2 or most other MMO's to be sure. Infinite blocks? You mean the classes designed for melee combat, people can still attack you from behind and other classes do not have infinite amount of dodges.
"No tanks, no healers, no DPS rotation"
So every Boss is gonna be limited, because there isn't a character that can take big hits and there isn't a character that can land big heals - So all the bosses will deal limited AoE damage and deal limited single target damage. This isn't the kind of PvE I want to play, but hey if that's what you like go for it.
I prefer Holy Trinity I prefer defined roles and I prefer proper teamwork being required to take down an epic boss, not a bunch of lone wolfs jumping about healing themselves while they spam out their skills.
tl;dr
Everything you've wrote is either incorrect or personally biased, you don't like something that's fine - But, there is nothing gimmicky about TERA's combat and just because you like GW2 better doesn't mean you have to hate. I wish you all the best playing GW2 when it releases in however many months.
But, people are used to Trinity and Gear and when I think you'll be surprised how many people don't want to play a game with ill-defined roles and no real sense of progression.
Let's see... have played both for about the same number of total hours in beta-

You use an even smaller rotation of skills in Guild Wars.
Err.. I think his point was that you had to use them at all to be viable. The fact that you use "smaller" rotations in GW2 is actually a PRO, not a con. I believe you misunderstood... and even then, I was never required to do any rotations whatsoever in order to kick ass and take names, whether or not they will be discovered to be viable in the future.
"Trinity based combat"
Believe it or not, people like Trinity combat and it provides more meaningful PvP
In your opinion. People are loving GW2 PvP just fine.
"Over the top animations, anime, animation lock"
Personal preference buddy, animation lock balances the game and it's how an action game is supposed to play - I'm sorry if you don't like it.
Oh I see where this is going already. See further quotes in yellow as I dismantle your post.
"Rely on Gear, Levels, Potion"
I'm not that big a fan of Gear grind, but everybody has the same level cap I don't see how people are going to have a level advantage over other people in the end game - And potions? Does GW2 not have potions?
Umm.. no. If you mean health and mana potions, no they don't. Not at all.
GW2 also has gear, that give benefits - It's just less obvious.
What you mean is "I want it to be less obvious so it is.." Only hey, it's not. The only reason it's less obvious it's because it's less ACCURATE.
"Nearly every attack can be done on the move."
I prefer realism and balance in my games to being able to shoot lazers out my eyes as I'm sprinting.
Do you not say at the end of this post "Everything you've wrote is ... personally biased?" Why did you even bother responding to this one if you're just countering a fact with an opinion?
"GW2 doesn't have infinite dodge/blocks like in TERA and we have traits/perks"

This is again, entirely an opinion of what is better than something else. What happened to your stance against biased comments? Not only that, but have you seen every boss. Some of the ones already placed in the Ascalonian Catacombs go directly for certain players and it's up to the group to figure out how to keep everyone alive. Did you play the beta?
I prefer Holy Trinity I prefer defined roles and I prefer proper teamwork being required to take down an epic boss, not a bunch of lone wolfs jumping about healing themselves while they spam out their skills.
So you prefer them, but it's not ok for Spock or anyone else to be biased? When you yourself are? Most of what he said was actually based on fact. You responded with the intention of discrediting him, but never got to that part. Also, in the absense of counter-facts to support your arguments, you actually provide misinformation about GW2. Teamwork is actually a huge part of the game and I saw that more times than I could count just in one weekend in comparison to any Trinity based game I've played.
Everything you've wrote is either incorrect or personally biased
*cough* *HACK* Must be coming down with something! I won't insult you for your narrow mindedness either since it's against the rules, but well...... you see what I'm getting at.
Anyone that waited for hours just to get that healer or tank knows this. Besides, without clearly defined roles, people can get quite creative on what to do and when to do it.
I respect it if you prefer the Trinity, though. But don't even bother trying to argument it's superiority. In fact, let's call it even?
To completely honest ... After playing GW2 I'm struggling with tera combat due to lack of movement while using skills. It's still a good game but movement feels too restrictive now.
To completely honest ... After playing GW2 I'm struggling with tera combat due to lack of movement while using skills. It's still a good game but movement feels too restrictive now.
Didn't things start to get mobile around level 20? I recall reading something like that.
I got me Tera after the last GW2 beta weekend only to try the combat since GW2 combat was disappointing for me i have to say that i enjoy Teras combat more its more challenging and the active blocking is what GW2 is missing.
Tera plays faster (well at least as a Warrior it does the Greataxe class is slow as hell but because of that a real challenge to play well) and is way more skill oriented than GW2 is since you really do need to aim better.
Even tho GW2 combat did disappoint did it provide enough fun to deliver as a backup game for when i need a break from more demanding games or just don't have any other good game to play.
To completely honest ... After playing GW2 I'm struggling with tera combat due to lack of movement while using skills. It's still a good game but movement feels too restrictive now.
Are you crazy? My Warrior hit and run at same time.
I just want to share my opinion on tera, since ive only watched gw2.
I actually play tera for a few weeks in closed and open beta, reached the cap at lvl 32, and after the painfull starting zone, where mobs are no challenge at all, the combat start to shine.
My first bad ass monster, was the basilisks, hulking creatures roaming a particular area in the second zone u visit, ive played a mystic in open beta, kinda of a buff/healer/debuffer class, anyway, the quest is flagged as 5 party member, me and me friend playing a berzerker(dps melee class) just went through this and a lot of other quests involving killin huge freaking monsters, in 2, despite the reccomended 5 ppl requirement, and i never ever had so much fun in a mmorpg, i had to constatly moving/teleporting/debuffing/healing my friend, all in a true real action combat fashion, i like it a lot, but i can see melee classes pissed off, for the "lock in place" delay u got when u use a skill, i don't got any as a mage or healer so can't really talk about how melee combat really is in tera.
I'm curious what people as a whole think about the combat (And ONLY combat) between TERA and GW2. Obvious bugs and such aside, which do you think is "better", and why? Of course, there will be preferences that are subjective, but that's ok, games, and fun are subjective in nature by default so that's expected. Looking forward to the discussion and keep it civil please!
Edit: Ok added a poll for simplicity sake, but the discussion is more important IMO.
GW2 is basically the same as any dumb mmo on the market.
tera is better by far.
I'm not sure what you have against the game. i can only report that I have had the complete opposite experience. Not to attempt to justify my own opinion or anything but it is far more likely someone would like GW2 than it is they would like tera. This is actually the most negative forum against GW2 on the planet and yet, even still, the game wins every poll. There are many going around, just pull one up.
Only 5% out of over a thousand people are cancelling their pre order. The poll is actually a little anti-climatic because its not close at all. So many people chose B ('I loved the game and am keeping my pre order') that one wonders the point of the poll to begin with.
In the TERA vs GW2 combat thread things are looking no different. Tera has about 30% while GW2 has over 50% of the votes.
In another thread that was attacking GW2 the poll there showed no difference in general concensuss, with most of the votes falling under 'GW2 is the best MMO ever'.
I understand that you have your own opinion and that is fine. I could care less how many people like GW2. Doesn't effect my quality of fun with the game any. I am presenting this information so that you consider abandoning your crusade though. There is a high chance you may concince someone to not give the game a try and miss out on something they would enjoy. Did you even give the game a fair shake? If I could look in all your posts to every forum on the planet would I find that you have hated the project sense announcement? Were you even in the beta? You had to have pre-ordered to get into this last beta (I believe the next ones have codes given out in addition to pre-order access) so I don't think you actually did.
I say that because it is so difficult for me to relate to what your saying. As I stated elsewear its akin to you telling me the table I'm using is orange when I'm using it and, in my experience, its brown. What I played was fun from start to finish and I walked away from it MORE excited for the release than I was before. So it will be pointless to try to convince me of your point of view because I've experienced it too. You can't tell me something wasn't how I experienced it ("You really DIDN'T have that much fun!"). I could go on about why I loved it but its obvious this is where the conversation leads into the abyss. You are clearly invested into your hatred of the game so it is pointless to present any information. I assume the situation to be the same for you because, again, I just can't understand your experience. Mine differed so greatly that there is no middle ground here.
Thus I'm more trying to convince you to just let it go. Neither should you try to convince others not to play a game nor should you try to convince them to play a game (especially when the odds are against any one person in general liking Tera and not liking GW2. To reiterate I'm not trying to justify myself there, its just how it is. Any poll will show you that GW2 is the popular choice right now. I will be the first to tell you if it ever becomes otherwise). I've played Tera and, again, we'll just settle that my experience was vastly different than yours. Just as you won't convince me that WHAT I PLAYED wasn't fun you won't convince me that what I played was fun.
Try to consider that others have different values than you here and you may be doing people more harm than good in your current state. Unless you just like turning people away from games they'd enjoy. In which case your evil.
People used tab targeting in GW2? You know you could activate attacks without selecting a target right? Move in and out of attack range while your attacks are winding up/down? I didn't use the tab key at all during the GW2 BWE.
I prefer a larger variety of skills, having less to me is a Con - You can't complain I state opinions as facts and then do the exact same thing .
Oh I see where this is going already. See further quotes in yellow as I dismantle your post.
It's hard for me to see you as objective when you say cheese like that.
Umm.. no. If you mean health and mana potions, no they don't. Not at all.
Thanks for answering my question, I think it's odd that none of these races have created healing remedies.
What you mean is "I want it to be less obvious so it is.." Only hey, it's not. The only reason it's less obvious it's because it's less ACCURATE.
If gear didn't give benefits, they wouldn't sell the ability to change the skin of specific gear..
Calm down.
Do you not say at the end of this post "Everything you've wrote is ... personally biased?" Why did you even bother responding to this one if you're just countering a fact with an opinion?
I don't like to skip ahead to the end of the story so I'm not sure yet, I countered an opinion with an opinion I don't claim what I right to be fact - Only that he did.
*cough* "I prefer realism and balance in my games" to being able to deflect swords like they're marshmallows if I'm not being struck from behind."
Childish response, don't grasp for straws.
Sounds impressive, I watched the live beta streams for three hours - I'm obviously not going to pay for a game to play the beta. From a design perspective I think the Holy Trinity allows more creative boss fights and I prefer the boss fights that can be made with that in mind. So yes, definitely personal opinion.
Haha, based on fact - In that he said something about GW2 and then said TERA was worse? I've said in this very thread I'm personally biased, not trying to hide it. All of my opinions about GW2 are my personal opinions based on whatever experiences I've had playing MMO's, I feel most of what he wrote about TERA was hyperbole to try and highlight what he perceives to be good things about GW2.
I don't see any misinformation I've wrote, I've drawn conclusions on how I feel existing mechanics might affect later gameplay you might think these conclusions are wrong or that I've made a mistake - But, that doesn't make me a liar.
I'm not saying that GW2 is better or worse than TERA - I just wish that guy wouldn't pull comments out of thin air and say one is definitively better.
*cough* *HACK* Must be coming down with something! I won't insult you for your narrow mindedness either since it's against the rules, but well...... you see what I'm getting at.
Not sure I could handle the irony, so I'm quite glad.
I appreciate the aptness of your portrait though, you are quite clearly blinded by personal emotions.
People used tab targeting in GW2? You know you could activate attacks without selecting a target right? Move in and out of attack range while your attacks are winding up/down? I didn't use the tab key at all during the GW2 BWE.
A little more difficult to do with a caster when two people are standing next to each other...
So every Boss is gonna be limited, because there isn't a character that can take big hits and there isn't a character that can land big heals - So all the bosses will deal limited AoE damage and deal limited single target damage. This isn't the kind of PvE I want to play, but hey if that's what you like go for it.
Tell that to the bosses who one-shot or two-shot my guardian. Tell that to the "Veteran Flame Legion Shaman" in the starting zone of the Charr. Tell that to people who died against normal mobs.
When your heal is on a 30-40 second cooldown as many of them are, you can't just span heals to stay alive.
BTW - Good post, Eir_S
I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

This is the second time I've seen it said that this forum is in some way biased against Guild Wars 2, is there any factual evidence to support that claim?
I wouldn't put too much faith in polls on internet forums, how many people do you really think have played both games that voted on it?
I was honestly surprised TERA got so many votes, I suppose at least some people vote honestly.
So every Boss is gonna be limited, because there isn't a character that can take big hits and there isn't a character that can land big heals - So all the bosses will deal limited AoE damage and deal limited single target damage. Anecdotes from Weekend past!
I think I'll wait until the game has actually released before I reconsider my opinion, as much as I appreciate your two days experience.
i dont think tera has the right to claim true action combat with combat animations that force u to stay in place when u use them. needless to say i feel that both games are taking different paths so it is a hard thing to compare. I enjoy pvp and tera doesnt have the type of pvp i look for so i think gw2 takes it for me. As for tera i like the idea of real time fighting aka dodging attacks blocking, but gw2 is also doing this u can dodge attacks and u can block attacks on alot of the characters so not sure what to say. there both going to be good for a certain type of person as for me gw2 all the way.
The thing I like best about GW2 is that you don't have to spend money to buy gear or equipemnt in order to survive or level your character. Consider Drakensang online, that game was fun for the first few levels but after a certain point it became ridiculous to level because it required you to buy potions and armor upgrades just to survive combat and progress further in the game. You had to wade through hundreds of monsters to reach some goal and the only way to survive it was by buying potions because the drop rates for anythign usefull were horrible. Now I'm not saying you couldn't level without purchasing, it is entirely possible but you would have to invest so much more time in farming for usefull pots in order to complete a needed quest or area. Anyways, I gave that up after lvl18.
Reading about Terra (not having tried it), it has a shop that sells things to give you advantages over other players for cash. You cannot buy these items using the in-game regular currency. In GW2 however, they have a similar system but and this is the big but; you CAN use the in-game currency (by exchanging it for gems) to use and buy shop items. Whats the real difference? Well in GW2 the time you invest is better spent because you can use the game-money you find from loot to buy shop items (by converting it to gems); whereas in Terra you cannot spend or convert your in-game currency on shop items (from my understanding of the article).
GW2 puts everyone on a level playing field and in terms of time invested, it offers a much better return on your free time than anything else currently on offer.
I could rant on about how much fun the dynamic events and boss battles are but a million other people have already done a great job of that for me.
Comments
To be honest i like both systems but i would also throw RaiderZ combat into the mix,imo it's on par with both GW2 and Tera.
It is very similar to Teras but the mobs are harder in RaiderZ.Before anyone says Tera rip off,RiaderZ has been in development longer than Tera.
Also it's a multi class game, meaning you can use skills from all of the classes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uML-R53oqGM&feature=related
Raiderz? looks pretty cool, if its anything like Tera I am sure Id like it. I watched some of the videos the combat seemed kind of choppy. Is it as fluid as Tera's? Just curious, I want to try it out.
Let's see... have played both for about the same number of total hours in beta-

I tryed both. First Tera closed betas, headstart and GW2 beta. After i started GW2 and was fighting with tabing i was like WTH.
Tera is winner for me 100%

Everything you've wrote is either incorrect or personally biased, you don't like something that's fine - But, there is nothing gimmicky about TERA's combat and just because you like GW2 better doesn't mean you have to hate. I wish you all the best playing GW2 when it releases in however many months.
But, people are used to Trinity and Gear and when I think you'll be surprised how many people don't want to play a game with ill-defined roles and no real sense of progression.
Hi
The Holy Trinity is lacking.
Anyone that waited for hours just to get that healer or tank knows this. Besides, without clearly defined roles, people can get quite creative on what to do and when to do it.
I respect it if you prefer the Trinity, though. But don't even bother trying to argument it's superiority. In fact, let's call it even?

I appreciate the aptness of your portrait though, you are quite clearly blinded by personal emotions.
Don't invest yourself so heavily in an MMO dear.
Hi
A little more difficult to do with a caster when two people are standing next to each other...
Hi
Anecdotes from Weekend past!
I think I'll wait until the game has actually released before I reconsider my opinion, as much as I appreciate your two days experience.
Hi
This is a LIE, melee classes can hit while run around the enemy.
Actually I was blinded by your hypocrisy and wasn't afraid to address it. You're welcome.
