One question I have for people that played GW2 - Can you play the game and get by just fine never pressing the tab-key? Would that put me at a disadvantage to someone that is using tab targetting?
TERA may have the boring quest grind system in place, but what of the DE's? Are they not merely quest grinding? Won't the same DE get old the 5th time you've done it on the 3rd character you are leveling? I'm not going to base my opinions of a game on something that will be dull in a month anyways. GW2 has no character progression. For people that love spamming battlegrounds / WvWvW I'm sure this is fine, but for people that play MMORPGs for character progression and advancement, GW2 will be a 1 month affair.
I also don't know how people can even begin to compare GW2s combat to TERAs. Run around in circles like a chicken with your head cut off hoping that your latency is better than your enemies (GW2) or strategic aim-based combat where every move you make has benefits / risks associated with it (TERA).
That being said, I play TERA now, and will buy GW2 as well. The DE's will be fun to see once and I'm sure I can hop in PVP from time to time. GW2 will always just be a secondary game though, but with no sub? Who cares.
Having tried all of the classes during the BWE and running through the 1-15 starter area DEs 8+ times did not get boring. What did get boring was grinding mobs to unlock weapon skills.
So you played the DEs 8+ times in one weekend. What happens a month later, when you've played them 40+ times? I think GW2 is on the right track with DEs and getting away from typical kill x quests, but didn't do any better job implementing them than Warhammer did.
I probably did most of the events in the human starting area a lot more than 8 times just because I was running by and decided to jump in. All I'm saying is that I repeated the same events multiple times in a somewhat short period of time and never got the "ugh I've got to do this again" feeling.

I played both games, The DE system is FAR better than the old quest system, it's just obviously more fun, you can call it what you want but it's def better and more immersive. Having played GW2 and gone back to TERA's quest system I find myself sometimes not willing to play it just because of it.
You can't compare the combat really, one you aim and are rooted in place and move strategically, on the other you tab, can cast while moving and it's a think fast type of combat.
Can't wait to see you in a few months down the road though, when you're bored of Tera and actually make GW2 your primary game
Remember... all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.

I never pressed the tab key while playing GW2, and only two or three times I clicked a target because I wanted to focus on one specific mob.
Combat was pretty much the shining achievement of the game. I think a lot of people are still shifting everything aside for the sake of combat. I think that works for a limited time really a bit more on a PVP server.
My prediction: I would say around January you will see a downward spiral with Tera similar to Aion. Combat alone is not enough to hold someone.
The questing: There is just no attachment to the zone, characters, plight(?), as its all about the combat. I wish you could take the combat and put it in a more robust game say Rift or something.
I canceled my sub after playing GW2. I was really into tera until around lvl 22 then I started to realize this was it. Then of course I tried the GW2 beta...
I didn't really like the game at first, I died way to many times and it was kind of irritating especially in the lower zones. Then I read about the dodging and it definitely made an improvment on my enjoyment of the game.
I played a Ranger...I don't like the taming system. Wish you just had a skill that would let you tame ala wow...but that is kind of nitpicking.
I like the combat although I hated ranger up close until I got that longbow...and of course me being me I did not real the skill tool tips which of course compounded my frustrations...lol.
I think Guild Wars 2 will be here for awhile. While Tera I see as being a nitch game, and of course going F2P. No that is not bad so please don't assume that. But if you can objectively look at the game you can clearly see it going that way. I would give it a year...depending on how the backlash is for the upper levels.
So around the end of May till Mid july you will see the impressions of the latter levels of Tera to see how that goes. GW2 I can't say as it's not out yet.
After playing both I cancelled my sub for Tera. I'll mill around in Torchlight until D3 comes out...go crazy for that until The Secret World comes out and hopefully that and GW2 will be the MMos for me. If not then just GW2.
I remember getting WoW by accident and being fascinated by the game but not the subscription. In spring 2005 I heard about GW and tried it to see if it would be an alternative. I was quickly bored and focused completely on WoW from that point. I'm afraid that is the same impression I'm getting about GW2.
Like GW, GW2 it will have its large core of fans. But for a lot of us GW2 just might not offer anything interesting enough to be worthwhile. I haven't decided against GW2 but I'm definitely not anticipating it at this point either. I'm not in beta so I'm dependent on what I hear but I'm not hearing anything that sounds irresistible. The GW2 alternative to a quest system sounds weird and uninteresting, although that could be because I haven't heard a really good description of it yet.
Tera on the other hand has been literally irresistible. I only played it because I saw an offer for free beta access if you 'Liked' it on Facebook. My first Tera CBT weekend I was hooked and preordered the game as at the end of the beta weekend. I've been playing every chance I get since. I find the world itself is what makes the quests really interesting. For me, that is the true way to explore and I can see now that GW2 will have a tough time tempting me away. I also have my subscription to SWTOR and its great graphics and storytelling, but frankly it's the beautiful and fascinating world of Tera that keeps calling me back.
After reading this article I have come to the conclusion that I am in fact not an MMORPG player. I must have been playing some other game when everyone else was playing WoW or Rift or WAR or whatever else I thought I was playing.
None of the the things that you have mentioned is why I was drawn to Guild Wars 2 in the first place or why I will continue to play it. At the core of Guild Wars 2 is a social experiment, an experiment to find out what type of person you really are. Everyone has the tools to help each other, the question is: Will you?
Any game that forces me to to play with people that I do not want to because they are playing the "key component" that is required for a certain piece of content is a game I do not want to have anything to do with anymore. I would not associate with them in real life, why would I want to do that in the game.
The other real advantage for me with Guild Wars 2 is that even though in the group of people I normally hang out with have a vast difference in ability within the game, we can all still play together. People can rush ahead and rocket through the game, while others can move along at a pace they are comfortable as well. Tried this with SWTOR and it worked for about 3 days until it all fell apart. I want to play with my friends and make new ones along the way, without the game getting in the way of that.
I know that during the BETA there were the issues with friends unable to play together, but this does not change the fact that this is the intention and that is good enough for me at this time. These things will be fixed, probably in time for the next BETA, so i hope to see everyone there, I am sure that it will be great fun.
Two things. Firstly, what does BAM stand for? Sorry for being dense. Secondly, if the combat in TERA is not great until level 20+ is this going to put new players off do you think?
Big A** Monster. It doesn't come from the developers though, rather the western distributers came up with it. They are basically mini bosses. There are also named world bosses out in the open but BAM have a generic creature name, there will usually be a bunch of them in an area. But they are intended to be fought by a group, they have lots of HP like a boss and they have a much more complex combat routine compared to normal mobs.
The combat before 20 is fine but it will be a bit slow for those who are really good at this kind of game. The game starts off very simply, usually with just two abilities. I think this is so that anybody can start getting the hang of the moving and dodging without being overwhelmed by a lot of skills. The transition that takes place at about lvl 20 is that you usually get more group oriented abilities at that point. healers get more healing. The Lancer get an area taunt and so on. Basically after 20, the world of instances and BAMs open up for you so the game gets considerably more fun. But I don't think they could have introduced these things much sooner without messing up the learning curve. People just need to realize that the curve has to be shallow enough at the beginning to pickup the majority of players. If it seems to easy then realize you are probably above average. But don't worry, the game gets harder. The group content will be more complex. also in the late 30s soloing difficulty goes up a good bit.

It'll be fun for a playthrough, but without any character progression what is going to keep people around? WvWvW? That'll get boring after a month of playthrough, if that. Same with DE's. That being said, GW2 will be worth it's box cost, it just won't last being a "main game" for people as people think. I hear people spouting "OMG GW2 is the last mmo i'll ever play!"
I think both games offer a good amount of fun through their combat. but what pushes me is just what was said in the article and one thing I walked away with from this weekends BWE...
" GW2’s events are still about killing and collecting, but like WoW did in 2004, it’s a refinement of the mechanic that disguises the “quest grind” in a way that makes it feel new, different, and altogether fun."
Tera's questing was just too much of a reminder of what I've been playing in the current MMO genre. Clicking this quest giver here, taking the three quest he has for me. Adding to the other 8 quest I have. 3 of which are grey now and aren't worth doing.
I enjoyed how Guild Wars 2 made the move to cut through that red tape. Yes many old-style questing mechanics are in GW2, but the thing is how they blend them into the background of the world. For me it adds some immersion not having to click on such and such NPC to start a quest chain. All I have to do in Guild Wars is be in the right place at the right/wrong time.. Depending on the outcome.. :P
TL;DR I feel both games are fairly good. Tera has a place but GW2 will probably be my home.
PM before you report at least or you could just block.
Oh and lol at how easily simple minds are enthralled by a new gimmick doing the same Kill X quests.
All MMORPGs forever will have 'Kill X quests'. It's a staple of the genre and there is no other way to give a quest to kill mobs. GW2 may not specifically say kill 10 centaurs, but for the heart to fill up, you need to kill 10 centaurs, or for the 3 waves to finish, you need to kill 10 centaurs.
There are few things that are "quest worthy" in an RPG. They pretty much always fit into go get this, deliver this, interact with some object or go kill something.

Personally I probably won't play either of them, at least until TERA goes f2p which will be before the year is out. TERA does not have enough content to keep a subscription playerbase happy.
The things that turned me off in TERA was the absurd female outfits. Also the ridiculous tank with a lance. Yeah, I know it is a game, but ridiculous is ridiculous in my book.
I will say I found TERA fun to play, but not enough to justify purchase and subscription. I don't like short term games, if I am going to put time into developing a character, I don't want to turn around and drop the game after a few months.
GW2 I am taking a wait and see attitude on it. Was not impressed with the Beta.

The hearts generally have all of the possible objective types, which doesn't make it different than previous quests from other games. The DEs tend to have a set single objective which is one of the types (gather this for me or kill these bad guys). That's not to say I didn't have fun during the weekend event. However, it's only fair to call something what it is. GW2's 'quests' are not revolutionary, but the quest delivery system is something different.
This could be interesting to watch. Personally TERA doesn't appeal, but I am glad that there are multiple MMOs coming out that are trying to move the genre in different ways. Diversification is good. As long as people can finally accept that a game doesn't need 10 million subscribers to be succesful then there may well be games for all of us, regardless of what we look for in a game.
The only people that have an obsession with that are wowkiddies. And honestly, I am happy if all of them stick to playing wow and leave the other games idiot-free
I agree, Tera is not a grind fest. I am level 39 and have yet to run out of quests. I will admit that the quests are just like every other mmo but for me the combat makes up for that. I don't understand why people think these two games can't coexist.
I couldn't get into TERA when I tried it out. The combat really didn't interest me but it was probably even more so I didn't care for that same ol' quest delivery. But with that said I think it's still a good game and one I will try again later down the line. I am really interested in the political system and diving into that.
So for me GW2 will end up with my time because it grabbed me initially during the BWE and first impressions go a long way. But I think the contest between games is rather pointless and contradicts what we should want as gamers. At least to me, we should both to flourish so we have more gaming options. For far too long we mainly only had WoW and had to continually fall back onto it even if we truly didn't overly enjoy it.
Now we have choices and options and last I checked that's a really good thing. Can't even forget TSW which is around the corner.

tera just a basic korean grind fest just alot prettier nothing remotely diffrent from it except the vanarch system which i think they had a similar concept in archlord back in the day people are just naive to see it at least gw2 just feels so much diffrent than most mmos out there.
"...nothing remotely different..." and then naming differences in the same sentence is a contradiction. You named differences and even forgot to mention a couple more differences than other mmos. True ability to dodge attacks and the requirment to actually aim attacks without targetting.
I agree, Tera is not a grind fest. I am level 39 and have yet to run out of quests. I will admit that the quests are just like every other mmo but for me the combat makes up for that. I don't understand why people think these two games can't coexist.
i have a guestion...the bams from lev 20-30-39 have different mechanics or its all the same and u use the same tactic to kill them?
So people are talking about how you get rooted in combat in Tera. This must e class specific, because while playing a priest I am constantly moving around, and Only stop when I have to cast a few spells. I have yet to try all of the classes, but from what I have played there is no just stopping, you must continue moving.

GW2 a win just because of that.

I never pressed the tab key while playing GW2, and only two or three times I clicked a target because I wanted to focus on one specific mob.
I hope I can be objective with this. Here goes.

The only people that have an obsession with that are wowkiddies. And honestly, I am happy if all of them stick to playing wow and leave the other games idiot-free
I agree.
My theme song.
"...nothing remotely different..." and then naming differences in the same sentence is a contradiction. You named differences and even forgot to mention a couple more differences than other mmos. True ability to dodge attacks and the requirment to actually aim attacks without targetting.
i have a guestion...the bams from lev 20-30-39 have different mechanics or its all the same and u use the same tactic to kill them?
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Anyone able to enlighten me?
