PvP in this game boils down to higher level=instant win. you pretty much have no chance of winning no matter how skilled you are as long as the player fighting you has even just a couple of levels higher than you (even 1 puts you at a severe disadvantage).
what the game does is that it artificially greatly increases the amount of dmg you do against lower players and greatly decreases the amount of dmg you take against lower level players. Players 3 lvls higher will do roughly 20% more damage while having a SIGNIFICANTLY higher crit rate. Lower level players have a SIGNFICANTLY lower crit rate against you. what makes matters worse is that several of the classes are "late bloomers" meaning your character sucks at pvp until late to end game. Now you can see why noob ganking especially horrific in this game. If you are lower level you cant really do anything except sit there and die.
After read and watch the video i can only say that this game is no way a player skill game ! higher lvl win.
You should read the other posts in the thread rather than a post that was obivouslly made to shift opinion one way. You're only seeing one side of the argument and taking it as definitive proof. That's foolish and illogical.
why would you play on a pvp server if you don't like to be ganked? it's basically what you signed up for when you picked a pvp server, you knew it would happen yet you're still crying about it.

Ew. What is the point to damage numbers that high in PvP? Over 1million? Even if that was against someone with level and gear equal to them, that would be ridiculous. Hell even the damage output of the one that was lower level is stupid, 36k+ was still enough to 1-shot someone with only 13k hp, what the higher level one had. So PvP is basically just, whoever gets the first hit?
EDIT: By the way, yes time invested and someone who is higher level should naturally do more damage, but what those defending this gameplay fail to realize is that, while that is true in most games, most games don't give an automatic % debuff to someone that's just a few levels below. That video has a handful of levels difference, there shouldn't be that big a disparity between the two damage/defense/crit levels, especially since they had the same base stats. This also points out the griefing issues you WILL be seeing against lowbies and exactly why those PvP servers will be just as dead as Aion's PvP areas within months, if that. The PvPers will have no one to blame but themselves, really.

What the OP is saying is right, as far as my experience has been. The difference levels make in PvP is huge and more than other games. As a level 35 sorcerer I can 3-4hit people 3 levels below me, I can probably one hit them with Fireblast, I haven't tried. So yes it's pretty much a get to max level ASAP to experience the skilled PvP Tera described on their page.
Here's another example, I was in a party with four other people taking down BAMs for quests. I think we were about level 33-34. A level 40 came and killed everyone. The guy wasn't after me and I was basically nuking the guy who was focusing on the other two lancers. I know we had the disadvantage of the BAM, but damn this guy could take hits, of course it was the level difference here. I did manage to kill him in the end finally, with my mana almost gone and the BAM after him also.
It was pretty clear in the BETA though, at the lumbertown bridge you could find a level 20+ slayer one hitting the people on their teens with no chance of taking him down.

I think it's more to the point where the game is advertised as taking skill, which isn't true until level 60... maybe. And who in their right mind would play this game for the PvE?

To all the people that say that lvl difference is always a problem in MMO PVP:
This is not always true. In AoC, level didnt make much of a difference. a small group of lvl 40s could easily kill a max lvl 80 if they knew what they were doing. Warhammer Online, Rift, and even Aion also did not gimp you too hard because of level difference (however in these games gear played a much large role). In TERA, you just basically have to accept the fact that you will get killed by higher level gankers and no amount of skill or gear will save you.

Uhhh, yes, its similar to many other mmo's but in most (I SAID MOST) the level advantage of only a few levels is not so big..2-3 shotting someone only a couple levels lower...that's huge.

Haha, really? Why would you play for the PVE? It is actually quite fun trying to solo/duo dungeons, it really does show that you need to be clever in this game, I went and healed a full group in SM and they failed horribly, next run me and my girlfriend decided to duo it ( Im a priest she is a warrior ), and we did it. Completed the dungeon it took forever but its so damn fullfilling when you finish it.

I said people on their right mind!! Joke aside i meant who would roll on a pve server, you can do that on pvp as well, the whole pve side is far from impressive aside a few dungeons and BAMs

Sure. everyone does. Look how successful single player console games are. and to be fair, TERA's BAM and boss fights are pretty fun. that and the combat system are probably the only good things this game has going for it. oh.. and graphics.

one shotting peeps 3 lvls lower than me (i play archer) while they are doing their escort quests is pretty fun imo, i love their rage spilling on the area chat . cannot say it is skill based but fun :P
maybe if everybody were 60 it would be more fun but still +12 beats +9 it seems . Skill based is said because of the crosshair targeting, but we are not hunting with a 50cal barret from 2km so it doesnt have a deep skill cap.

I agree on the PVE/PVP thing and I never understood why you wouldnt take the full package, but some people genuinly dont like to have PVP at all or want it only in a controlled environment.
What I meant with my post is that I can see guilds forming for the sole purpose of beating the hardmode content fairly easily, cause its quite challenging and entertaining.
Op is right , you have to get to lvl 60 in PvP and in PvE it is to boring to get to lvl 60- a lose lose situation. In PvP you should not be able to attack someone who is more than 5 levels below you. The prob with PvE in this game is the quests, to me PvE is so much better with better quests and games like Lotro and Swtor have those,
I play on a couple PVP servers and I have yet to get ganked by a 60. Anyway, it wouldn't be a big deal if I was, I'd just change channels. I have been ganked by people around my same level, but hey it's a pvp server.
People can't seem to come up with things to talk about with this game without exaggerating problems that don't even exist.
Op is right , you have to get to lvl 60 in PvP and in PvE it is to boring to get to lvl 60- a lose lose situation. In PvP you should not be able to attack someone who is more than 5 levels below you
Every MMO I have played there is always been a level desparity when leveling up, I really cant think of any MMO besides maybe EVE after many months of training at which point the returns on some proficiencies are just marginal but that is really comparable to max level where the balance begins.
I have killed plenty of higher-leveled characters with better gear than me. Yeah, there is a significant handicap to the weaker character and in my opinion this needs to be tweaked, but by no means does this mean a disadvantaged fight can't be won. You just have a lot less room for error than the other guy.
Barring Asheron's Call, Planetside, and a few others, this is still one of the most skill-based PvP MMOs on the market, hands down.
SIDE NOTE because this really annoys me...
The tales of ganking are extremely overstated, by the way. I am now level 45 on a pvp server (playing casually for a couple hours per night) and have been ganked probably 5 times, actually dieing maybe 3 of those times. People tend to get ganked one time while they are zoned out, not paying attention (FYI if you are alert, hardly anyone can gank you - there are too many escape mechanics in the game and it's hard to catch a mounted character), and rage about it like they are totally incapable of progressing. There are channels in every low-to-mid level area. Stay out of channel 1.
And just for good measure: PvE servers -> that way.
I was in Lumbertown a few days ago and there were a pair of lvl 35 blocking the bridge and I saw at least 60 people one shotted by these guys and some of the people who were one shotted were only a few lvls lower, sometime it took 2 shots but no more than that
Guys I am sure that we all know what game this guy likes, lets just ignore the trolls shall we? I mean How can MMORPG games Have Levels? thats unthinkable!!!!!!, A game where you progress and you are stronger than new player? UNREAL!!!!! I can't believe that I even answered him seriously. What has happend to this site's community? at least we were able to reason with them before, but now....
Lewl affected much.
Btw, you are what is wrong with the community, jackass.
I agree. The people complaining about the community are the worst one's themselves. For example, this guy who thinks his way of reasoning is the absolute truth. Gosh forbid that you have an MMORPG where gear and level does not affect that much in PvP. I mean it hasn't done before right? (it has)
You said this before, that there were many MMORPG's where gear and levels don't affect PVP much, besides Planetside and EVE I'm wondering which ones those were. (UO, AC perhaps?)
Starting with Lineage 1 and continuing with DAOC, Shadowbane, Lineage 2, AOC, AION, WOW, EQ1, EQ2, Rift, COX, Fallen Earth, Runes of Magic, SWTOR, Vanguard are just a few of the titles I've played where levels>gear>skill.
In fact, you could say with a few rare exceptions, this is the trademark design of most major theme park MMORPG games, which is why many people hate it, they are always looking for fairness in their PVP.
TERA just continues this long standing design tradition, which oddly enough seems to be a surprise to many people in this thread, quite surprising to me that so many expected something more along the lines of GW1/2 which IMO are the anomolies in the genre, and not the rule.
I dont think it should be this way just because other ThemeParks have done it this way. Keep in mind that TERA is marketing itself as having skill-based combat, which is an anamoly in itsef. To do that and then have levels and gear matter much more is pretty stupid imo.
Well, actually I can't disagree with you, I'd have liked to see them design a better PVP system that had more safe zones, consequences for ganking, basically a way for players to better manage their risk vs reward, a la EVE.
Since instead they are following the model of so many games that have come before I decided to play on a PVE server which is the first time I've ever done so. I'm just tired of playing "run rabbit run" as I level up, the "fun" isn't there anymore for me I guess.

My understanding and this might be completely bollocks cause I cant even remember where and why I read it, is that Vanarch and Exarch could at some point ( when its available the system ) or in the future control what is the stance of their city(ies) towards chaotic players, and while now its in a "default state", it would be like Lineage 2, after you conquer a castle it can never go back to NPC hands, it will then be decided based on however "owns" the region.
This to me sounds like the better alternative, where people can choose to make an area unfriendly towards reds, maybe spawn guards that patrol certain regions ( again from L2 ), ala concord ( EVE ), this is provided there are incentives for playuers to make that choice over allowing their region to be chaotic.

ER, all of us folks on the PvE servers, who in fact are enjoying the PVE thank you very much.
BAMs and dungeons are actually quite fun, especially if you're a healer at least in my case.

Welcome to open world PvP in MMOs. Just change to a less populated channel until you hit level cap, it's not a big deal. Most of the population will be at cap in a few months anyway. I've only be ganked once by a person that was out of my level range.

Like I said its the same scenario, at the lower stages of training in EVE you will get owned by someone that has trained Rockets and you have only Rail Guns I, towards the end of the training is when the improvements are marginal, this is the same as in WoW ( giving an example ), there is a massive difference between level 19 and 20 ( level that you get to the end of the talent tree at least when I played ), a level 20 got a tool that will greatly influence his performance, but when you get to 60 on both classes skills are at the same level, new gear and talent tweaking only give you that small edge ( the same as in EVE ).
