It is Diablo, you go down a dungeon and kill Diablo, not spend ages customization a unique character.
There are real roleplaying games for that, this is a hack and slash action game.
Both types can be just as fun with the right attitudebut if you want a unique character you got the wrong game.
I think it was more on a level of "skill" customization, and it was more of a retort to complaints of lack thereof. They weren't referring to character customization. I popped in here thinking that was the topic as well, and thought pretty much the same thing you did.
All I know is that rather than bash the game I've been looking forward to for several years-- which I purposely uninstalled the beta client from my hard drive early, early on so I wouldn't burn myself out-- I will retain my joy and eagerly await my Diablo 3 experience tomorrow! WOO HOO!
All this talk about the skill system.....does it lack complexity or does it increase skill efficiency, is it a step down or a step up?
Why aren't any of you asking, 'is it fun to play?'
It's either a step up or a step down based on personal preference, nothing else. The majority of people, myself included, are going to love it. There's no denying that. There's simply more viable customization available when it comes to skills, and it's more flexible so you can't screw up your character in any way. That's definitely an improvement, in my opinion.
But why ask what others find fun when ultimately that's irrelevant to begin with? Nothing is going to be fun to you simply because someone else says it's fun to them.
Yes, if you bought the whole sorc with all the gear or suffered much in hell.
We will see how that customization thing works out, billions of combinations +5% damage on bash instead of +5% damage on overpower is one thing, really different builds is another.
synergies, and more than just damage was affected with skill points on many skills. further there were builds where you'd want 5 points, others where you'd want that same skill maxed.
And showing each d3 skill 6 times is intellectually offensive. many of the runes are so meh they don't even count.
Really, the idea wasn't horrible, but it needs one more dimension, like some specialization points that you can put into the skills, or the runes, or something. Even if you only get one every 4 levels. That, and if they were a bit more creative and daring in how runes changed the spells effects, then I think I'd be satisfied. But after seeing the options, I think it effin blows. I saw maybe 3 ways to play a wizard that sounded remotely interesting. That's just sad.
thats 3 different ways to play 1 of 5 classes that YOU find personally interesting, in d2 people found one way they wanted to play and flamed anyone for playing it someway else.
just saying if you find 3 ways on average that are awesome to play each class for YOU, thats 15 play throughs.

Firstly, I'm not sure why the bloody OP drag this turd back into the spotlight, other then to provoke some people with his silly picture. There are also passive skills listed at the wizard. If you're gonna list "take 20% less damage", then you can also list passive's and synergies from Diablo 2. Just saying.
Like Zorgo and Lagoz said, the main question, of any game, is:
Is it fun to play?
Diablo 3, for me at least, is more fun to play then ARPG's that feature standard skilltree systems. Mainly because Diablo 3 gives me more flexibility to take on certain battles. This by enabling me to switch skills on the fly (clunky interface for it though and I haven't tested it "in combat" yet, so I"m not sure if this is possible).
I still have that feeling of playing to reach a certain level, so that I get a specific skill (like in WoW, reaching level 30 and 60 for some powerful skills) that I get from skilltree systems. So for me it's nothing lost, more gained.

We have PoE and TL2 for those who are looking for deeper character customization.
Diablo 3 is pure smashing bashing and looting fun. It's an old-school ARPG that doesn't require any/much brain power to play.
It's F-U-N 8)

Going to be way more fun .
Each skill can be "morphed" into an entirely different skill almost.
You dont have to level up 50 characters to try different combinations .
D2 I only used 2 skills Blizzard + Ice Blast
I didnt have option to use hotkeys 1-5 for skills only potions .
What is worse is that I prefer to have Ice Blast on right mouse click but blizzard would only assign to Right mouse click.
So yeah D3 is going to be better imo
Each skill is an entire Torchlight 2 skill tree in microcosm.
