Developers still made trash games but almost nobody brought them because there was a whole media division of Quality Control professional game reviewers that could tell us if a game was good or not before we brought it.
Not true. Reviewers have always been on the "school system" grading scale where a 50% is an F, and have always had the same reverence for redundant games - which is why SW:ToR scored a 'B'.
Sure. Any mature mmo enthusiast knows that there was blatent editorial misconduct by sites; on http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/star-wars-the-old-republic look at PC Gamer, G4 TV, IGN Ten Ton Ton Hammer, MMORPG.COM, to name a few. Contrast that with the consumer review. At no time in my mmo history have I seen the gross level of irresponsible reviewing for what should have been a "Massively-Multiplayer" game.
Know who reviewed them and question whether you'd trust thier judgement again. Sure some people dont read reviews, but the vast majority do; otherwise the sites and magazines wouldn't be getting "Advertising" money from the publishers; to think otherwise is rediculas.
The bad reviewers have been proven horribly horribly wrong, their credibility challenged, and the more mmo-enthusiast type gamer knows it; hundreds of thousands. Players dont need an objective review recipe, they need honesty in reporting; It is so painfully obvious that that did not occur with the reviewers for TOR, but even more painfully obvious that the consumers called them on it. Even if a reviewer only spent 20-hours playing TOR, any fair minded person knows that even with that amount of time, the core mechanics of game-play were blatently obvious.
Have you seen the metacritic reviews of MW2 and MW3 and D3, and the difference between the official reviews and the user reviews?
According to those user reviews, just like you're saying with TOR, those games must be among the most awful, horrible games around. Since they're around the 3-4 in rating as well. Yet, oddly enough, even while MW2 being so enormously horrible, millions and millions still took steps to buy MW3. Apparently millions of gamers didn't really share the opinion of those user reviewers. Unless you're saying that the opinion of those millions of gamers that went on to buy MW3 doesn't count.
As for the user score of those games on other sites besides metacritic, I see oddly enough an average user score that's like 4 points higher than the average ones on metacritic, also with hundreds of user reviews among them. Kinda odd, bc we must assume that the user reviews on metacritic as well on other sites are equally representative of the gamer crowd, right? Hmm.

Not the person you replied to but ... you can put a clever spin on anything to make it appear uninteresting and dull. Yes, similiar combat has been used in a single player game before but that has no significance. Many games try to convert single player mechanics like bioware and their whole "story" aspect. Getting it to work in a MMO is something completely different
As for the original topic and the rest of what you say I agree completely.
Just for shits and giggles...
You can put a clever spin on anything to make it appear interesting and fun. Yes, its different but combat has been used in other games before so it has no significance. Many games try to convert MMO mechanices and throw out "story" like Tera. So really, what does it bring?
that is basically my biggest gripe about Tera...the story makes no sense...at all...not even in Korean or Japanese where the reviews point out the same thing. You are playing a game in that world setting...a setting you dont understand...what is the point? Questing is horrible bland and worse because of the story. The combat isnt new though it is different from the norm. The crafting is dull. PvP has no reward and seeing as how the world doesnt make any sense it doesnt mean anything other than just fighting other players. instance/raids come down to just about loot...sure arent doing it to keep the population of terabibledibles from become too numerous so they dont harm your serenity...
So...yeah.

Tera offers zero that is new. Not a single thing. Its so called action combat is not new either...there are other action MMOs with virtually identical combat.
This attitude is part of the problem. People keep saying every new game that releases offers nothing - yes, it does. It's a new game. Just because a MMORPG has quests doesn't make it a WoW-clone. The fickle nature of many MMORPG consumers is as much of the problem as are the shortsighted developers. Not every game has to reinvent the wheel - they just have to release a quality product that is enjoyable to play.

Many reviewers were critical of SWTOR before its release just as many are supportive of TERA now.

That has already been touched on.
A game being "new" does not mean it brings something "new" to the genre...and I dont recall coming close to calling it a WoW clone...it would seem you are the one with a fickle nature seeing as how reading comprehension and assumptions take over your thoughts when you see someone saying something that isnt full fledge unquestioning worship of a game you like.
BTW...what is a quality product? Is it universal? Can you like a product and another person not? if more people DONT like a product than those that do, can it be called quality? Who decides? Everyone? A select few? does one remove the rights of another to be able to speak out about it? Why do you feel such a need to have people that dont agree with you shut down? Why are their differing opinions so offensive to you? Why does the mere mention of negative opinions about the games you like cause you to come complain about them as if they are "fickle"? Do you not know what the word means?
Do you not understand that an opinion can still be consistant even if it goes against your own personal opinions...I mean, the last time I checked...I riped on the last 3 MMORPGs that were released with a piss poor excuse for a story with bland overall gameplay...seems very consistant (aka not fickle)to me.
So tell me...did you ravagely defend the last MMORPG to come out with a joke of a story and average gameplay? TERAs review scores on this site and on other sites are completely deserved IMO.
It is not a good game. The questing is terrible, the animations are poor, the crafting is lacking, the variety of mobs is poor, the variety of abilities is poor(i dont want version 5 of the same ability i want new ones) etc etc etc. There are a few good points about it, such as the "action" combat, but even that isnt all that great. I would say that GW2s combat is more action packed than TERA's
So, now that we have established that TERAs score is completely deserved, what does that have to do with SWTOR? Nothing. Yes, SWTORs review scores were too high, but that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the review of TERA.
I agree that we need more balanced, accurate and in depth reviews from our gaming media, but that is unlikely to happen since most review sites rely on advertising revenue from the very companies whose games they are reviewing.
HOWEVER, we have now moved on a long way from looking at game titles in the back of a magazine and deciding to mailorder the game cassette based on their name alone. The internet is a wonderful thing and if you do a bit of research for yourself you can find many many gameplay videos, reviews, blogs and in depth articles about new and recently released games from independant sources and individuals.

I never said I like Tera. I actually said the game isn't for me to you in this very thread. What I did say is the game is still a step forward and as a whole it does still offer something different than other games on the market prior to it. I also said the combat was new for a MMO and with the exception of vindictus (which admittedly I haven't played) it's new. If you are going to tell me to rethink my opinion than get it right please.
I'm not out to defend Tera or TOR, I've just been saying they aren't the colossal pieces of crap some people are making them out to be. They are good games for what they are. Now I will say again, as someone who has tried both of them, they aren't for me but they do offer a better quality of those type of games than has been on the market prior to them.
This is just my opinion. If you disagree that is fine, I'm willing to discuss it but not if you keep trying to insult me or keep trying to make out like you did in your next post (that I'm not going to reply to) that I am advertising Tera for whatever reason you may think that is. Cheers.
I beta tested SWTOR for many months before release, I still play the game and am glad I bought it.
I dont hate Bioware, I dont care about EA, I dont play anyone elses style or follow a plan or make decissions based on goofballs stuffing garbage into forums.
I would rather focus on what I enjoy in the game, support what has been done that I like as much as I can, try and add positive feedback and suggestions to Bioware in their efforts to improve the game.
I think it's fair to say in any theme park game that there should be a robust endgame, I dont think it's fair or even sane to post hyberbole and overblown tripe in ignorant hatred of a game.
If companies shut down every game that didn't launch with group finder, more than 4 battlefields, a publisher that was disliked or a game that wasn't absolutely free, there would be nothing to play.
There is alot that I like about SWTOR, there are things I would like to see added, fixed and or removed, but I am going to keep playing based off my feelings towards the game not some one elses outrage.
First a quick history lesson. A long long time ago there was no game reviewers there were just people that made games, and people that brought them. Most games made back then were trash but they sold because they had some IP we liked like Ghost Busters or Ninja Turtles. Eventually people got angry, like the Angry Video Game Nerd and started actually reviewing games. Developers still made trash games but almost nobody brought them because there was a whole media division of Quality Control professional game reviewers that could tell us if a game was good or not before we brought it.
Now I'm not picking on any particular site or blogger, as I know a lot of you guys try your best. But the community is outraged once again at the lack of quality MMOs being released. And players want to blame the developers to stop making bad games, but that's never going to happen because we keep buying them! So why do we keep buying bad games? Because the gaming media bloggers and reviewers tell us these games are GOOD and we should buy them! I'm outraged at the lack of Quality Control that time after time has mislead people into buying completely overhyped, underdeveloped games. It hurts gamers pockets and it helps big developers make money off a bad product.
My case in point is how SW:TOR not only got great reviews but even got called game of the year by many publications despite only being out a few weeks! Fast forward to Tera, a game that majority of players would consider a better then SW:TOR but has a drastically lower score. Now a lot of publications are backpedaling on SW:TOR's outrageous scores, saying stuff like it was fun at the time, and that they didn't know the game wasn't good. Well guess what? It's your JOB to know if a game is good or bad. I don't get paid to play games for a living, and even I could tell that SW:TOR was drastically overhyped. Just like every other AAA MMO that came out after WoW was ridiculously overhyped.
I'll tell you exactly why Tera got a worse score then SW:TOR. If you look at both reviews of the game you'll see the same issue and that's the fact that the reviewers themselves only played one portion of the game! If you take SW:TOR's leveling and compare it to Tera's leveling portion of the MMO, then the scores make sense, because that's all that was actually taken into account. But if the reviewers actually did their jobs and played both the leveling portion and the endgame portion of the MMOs they would have given an more accurate review.
TL;DR
Should SW:TOR's score be drastically lower? Would Tera's have been drastically higher? Is the next big MMO going to be more overhyped garbage? We'll never know because there's No longer any Quality Control. The reason why I'm angry and you should be too is because we're back to the bad old days of gaming where developers can make a trash game, slap an IP on it and make millions of dollars because players keep being suckered into buying it. People think that the problem is the industry itself, but my argument is that it's the lack of a reliable Quality Control medium that used to help players make smarter choices, and protect us from big developers that like to rehash a poor product, slap an popular IP on it, and charge full price for it. But what we have now is bad reviewers, overhyping bad games, made by big bad million dollar businesses, which is bad for our pockets, and bad for the industry.
My review score of this review is the same as every MMORPG review ever written.

My review score of this review is the same as every MMORPG review ever written.
Somewhere between six and eight ; )
