I think it really depends on your perspective.....IF you take the number of people playing MMOs in 2012 versus those playing in 2002, the number isnt even close......We have so many options available today it isnt even funny.....If anything some MMOs will die out just due to too many games being available......I havent counted recently, but I'd guess there are probably 500 or so MMOs available out there (and more if you count browser games).....
I doubt publisher have anything to do with SWTOR failure. From the patch they roll out for SWTOR, they clearly have no idea how to build a good mmo. EA actually give them the backing they need to develop the most expensive MMO to date, and 5 year dev time to boot.
