Thank you everyone for your responses. I decided to give the game a shot, even if it was for one month only. I guess it couldnt be worse for me than Swtor despite I m a huge fan of Star wars.
And hey, I spent much more cash for much worse stuff than an mmo
Alright, I hope you enjoy it, if not, well, we've all been there. It happens.
If you need help with anything just send me a PM and i'd be glad to help, i've got a lot of free time on my hands. x.x
Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your help and everybody else as well.
Btw I love your name, the first part of it means Beer in Czech language
I play on the PvP server and the only PvP I have seen is getting ganked a couple of times, other than that nothing.
PvP happens fairly often for me. I've been ganked a few times, but it's hardly an issue. I'm not even in a guild, so I can't do GvG fights, but if I feel like PvPing, I flag up and go attack people my level. You get no/minimal infamy for it, unlike ganking.
Also, I just wanted to make a comment to the person who mentioned aiming was not really present in the game, etc...if you're playing a Mystic, yeah, a lot of your spells lock on. However, most classes do not have a huge arsenal of lock-ons. Furthermore, if people aren't blocking/dodging your lock on spells in PvP, then they're just bad.
I played the game for a couple of weeks and cant say that I am overly enthusiastic to load the game. The game is gorgeous and the combat is fun but the game is an extreme themepark game which means it is on rails so I got quickly bored (lvl 20 Priest is my highest char but I have tried them all except Sorceror).
I play on the PvP server and the only PvP I have seen is getting ganked a couple of times, other than that nothing.
I still got some time left so I will continue level my Priest to see if the game opens up but I am pretty bored to be honest.
What mmo would you recommend? I m quiet bored these days and would like to try something new.
Well I have the same issue, in that am looking for a fresh new MMORPG. After my free month is up in Tera I will try the DayZ mod, I heard it is a pretty cool modded MMORPG and then maybe Perpetuum Online. So sick of ThemeParks that I dont think I can stommich anymore.
Well you just made me really sad and I had so much hope for the game. But being unable to use the skill points or build my char how I like it is a huge downside for me, dont like it in D3 and wont probably like it here
Well i guess i should give another chance to Rift as the skill building was great there imo. Do you know how is the population situation there right now? I remember that my realm (sagespire) became a ghost town after a one month of playing
Part of the reason you don't have a bajillion trees to build your character is that "you" are a part of that build.
Your ability to aim, to move, to do something when faced with a choice is a part of your character.
Don't let this post fool you. Aiming is not that big of a deal as a lot of people would like you to think. I played Tera for 2 months in korea and i can tell you that aiming is not that impressive mainly because the hit boxes are so huge that you pretty much never miss, it got to the point were I could zone out and stil hit my target. Maybe not everybody will share my opinion, but I felt that the targeting system based on the class I played (mystic=healer/pet master/debuff) was nothing more than drawn out tab targetting system because of the way critical skill for my class operated.
And during PvP at least for the mystic, since I had CC skills which operated in such a way that you could almost never miss, that I could CC my opponent had let him/her have it.
A lot of people mistakenly believe tab targeting automatically makes a games combat bad, but most of them saying that don't understand why that is, all they know is what they heard from other uninformed players. Anyways, tab targetting based combat is USUALLY bad because usually it means the skills are like homing missiles, but that isn't always the case. So while Tera's combat stripes away the tab targetting, but since the mobs hit box are huge you never miss and the movement speed is so slow that in PvE unless its a charge up attack, you shouldn't miss at all as well.
ADDED: Tera is not a bad game per say. if it was b2p or f2p I would totally be playing it, but its a monthly sub and I don't feel the need to pay money to play a game similar to another game I used to play.
Since i have missed with skills in the game I woudl say it plays more of a part than you are saying.
Sure you dont' have to be a sharpshooter in order to hit that one little part, but the ability to hit what you are facing and the possibiliyt of a miss, along with the HUD, make it so that you pretty much don't have to look at they keyboard, your attention is right on the screen where it should be.
I was even to succesffuly take on two players by moving and successfully blocking and even held off a much higher level players by making sure I blocked all his attacks and came out only to make jabs at him. I lost but was surprised I could hold him for for a bit.
So yes one can miss. The hit boxes are larger so that there is room for error, you are correct. If you can get the side of your reticule over a mob you will hit it. However if a mob or players moves signifiantly away from taht reticule you will miss. Not a big deal in the lower levels but a bigger deal when you have mobs jumping over you and jumping all around the place. I suspect that was done on purpose to avoid frustration and to allow for any lag a player might get.
You are probably right it probably plays more part than what I m claiming, but personally for me it didn't add anything to combat. I will admit that it is an improvement over the RNG dodging that current MMOs have but only because you the player have some control whether something hits or not.
As for you last paragraph, I played up to level 50 content on the korean version (at release that was cap) and again I never missed which was weird considering my ping was around 280+, i knew others with 500ms. During the mobs usual rampage I didn't bother to attack it because i was more concern at not getting sqwish but that didn't happen frequent enough to make a difference.

it probably should be noted that instad of fine tuned hits the game seems to allow for more broad aiming.
I've been testing this as of now since you brought it up and for mobs that move a lot you can miss. for mobs that come straight for you there is little error. I don't know how the mystic attacks are but with the lancer and with the archer, as long as you can touch the side of your reticule where the hud will identify the target, you will hit.
For players all I know is that they moved to the right or left and my lunging charge missed. if they fired an attack I wouuld move out of the way and they would miss. I haven't been able to test that more thoroughly. In any case, it's enough for me as I am finally enjoying combat that feels (for me) more natural than other mmos' I've played.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I decided to give the game a shot, even if it was for one month only. I guess it couldnt be worse for me than Swtor despite I m a huge fan of Star wars.

If you really think that swtor is bad, dont dont buy tera, easy like that.
OP you really should trial this game before buying. I played in beta and the self root on instant abilities (animation lock) drove me crazy, enough that it was a game breaker for me.
And GW2 is not out, nor it will be out for months. Regardless of how good or bad GW2 will end up being, recommending somebody to play it at this point in time is pointless.
Well i guess i ll give Tera a shot as there is no other game which currently interests me. I hope I wont be disappointed as I was in Swtor.
One more question if I may. How big is Tera world? Is there something to explore? Are there alternatives when changing the current location? By that I mean if I have an option of chosing which location I m going to level next? I mean the exact opposite to Rift leveling where the next location was preset and there was no other way to go.
I don't know, if they levelling seemed slow in TOR, you may want to try a game that doesn't have levels... I mean it seemed way too fast for me, and it was certainly faster than Vanilla Wow.
Hello there. So I ve been seriously thinking about purchasing Tera, but before I do that I would like to see some responses from you guys.
So far I played Wow (vanilla-lich king), rift and swtor. I loved Wow, enjoyed Rift except the pvp as i found it really static and slow and was really dissapointed by Swtor.
TERA is all about the combat, the questing is lazy & unimaginative, while it serves it's purpose of moving you through the levels it is in my opinion one of the very worst examples of how to do a quest-driven game.
What I really need in the game is to be dynamic, not super slow leveling (Swtor was awful in this for me) and competetive Pvp. Endgame should offer some content as well, doesnt have to be neccesary a whole bunch of raid dungeons.
SWTOR has one of the most rapid levelling phases of any MMO, this was part of the problem in it having very little endgame content, if you found it slow then every other game out there right now is going to be even slower, the PvP I thought was very well done, except it has like Mythic games before it, far too much in the way of crowd control abilities - the balance hasn't been terrible (unless you listen to the never-ending gripes of PvP'ers who will never, ever feel a game has balanced PvP because "I won = my class is balanced, I lost = nerf that asshole OP class mofo!" the game falls down on it's static world, lack of incentives to group, & taking far too many pre-existing MMO mechanics & doing nothing new with them, then omitting a bunch of features viewed as standards for the kind of MMO they borrowed the mechanics they did use from.
I really enjoy doing dungeons while leveling, I d like to ask how many are there and if there accesable by a lfg tool (if there is one ofc). Also, are there pvp battlegrounds? Is the game casual player friendly?
What are your thoughts on based on the information i gave?
I would pretty much disregard a lot of it & just say that if you enjoy a game where combat has depth but the questing system is a pale shadow of every other quest-grinder's then TERA could be right up your alley, if you are looking for a complete package TERA will be a let-down, had I been a bigger fan of PvP I would have subbed to TERA for that in spite of it's weak questing.
I am sorry for my english as it is not my native language. Hope for your responses and opinions on Tera as I would like to try it.
I played the beta and found it dull and derivitive. The only good thing about the game is fighting the BAMs and once you have dont that 100 times that will get boring too.
Read the MMORPG.com review, and the reviews on all the other gaming media sites. TERA just isnt worth the money.

Hi there. I bought the game a few days ago for $25 at Amazon. I live in Europe, and currency is pretty good at the moment, so this was a very cheap game for me! Anyway, I can't really comment if you should go for it or not. If I'm curious for a game, I really have to try hard not to buy it. I play on the US server btw.
First impressions are good. I like the feel of the game. But i'm exploring and discovering, so don't really have any pros/cons yet.

This is pretty much how I felt. It is typical questing MMO. I keep logging on and trying different things out, but I rarely last more than an hour. I also didn't know that battlegrounds are currently NOT part of the NA version, which was a massive let down.
TERA is a good game. I played swtor for a bit before, and I think TERA was better for me. However, as many already pointed out, quests in TETA are very repetitive. Main storyline is somehow interesting, but i lost track what is happening anyway. However, I found that if u want to rush through quests u will get very board very quickly. Therefore, I started doing other things in tera than just quests. I started helping lowbes with quests, doing some crafting and enchanting, etc. This gives me good break from time to time from the quests.
Tl;dr
U should try tera, but be ware of repetitive quests.
At this moment, no. I've played up to lvl 49 and finally hit wall a little bit ago. I'll list my main reasons I will not be resubbing and hopefully give you a little insight into the game.
The world is indeed beautiful, however, it serves no purpose beyond being a container for mobs. Off the trail exploration will not be found here.
A good chunk of the zones are not that expansive. If anything, if you notice the onscreen map. ( The see through map with the roads.) You will pretty much follow those roads to each quest hub. The zones are built around those roads.
The cities are tiny and lifeless. Castanica - the major city of the Castanic race. It is literally just 2 small streets. Velika - the first main city you reach. It will take 10 minutes to fully explore it and it really does not have much to explore. The only reason to visit the cities are for the glyph store and quests that send you there. Nothing else really.
The combat is not that great, imo. I've played games and multiple genres for many years. The action combat does not hold a candle to plenty of other action games. I'm accustomed to playing action games that are at a higher pace than this game.
The mobs and bams become dull after awhile. I've been fighting the same mobs give or take a couple new ones from lvl 1 and bams since lvl 22. Once you memorize the attack patterns of the mobs. You will be doing the same rotation for pretty much all of them.
Dungeons are not that interesting. Oddly enough, I thought this game would be badass going through dungeons, however, Vindictus does this alot better with its combat and dungeons. The bosses I've fought pretty much have the same skill sets as the bams outside the dungeons. However, there are a few that do have unique mechanics to them.
Do not expect too many differences in armor and weapon styles. Majority of the armors look the same for each tier but with different coloring and the next tier will look a like an older tier but with a little added flair.
Dungeon queue will be long for you if you do not roll a tank. I've lately had to run pugs because the group I was with have outleveled me or have not logged on for awhile. So now I pretty much wait an hour+ to get in a group. Shame that lancers are the only ones with an instant que. However, you can still spam LFG to get a group going if enough are going for the same dungeon.
Crafting in this game is not good at all. The costs just to lvl it up is extravagant and most of the stuff you make is not better than what you can get from a dungeon.. Most will just say just avoid it and save the cash to buy dungeon drops off the tradepost. They just made it too difficult to start off with crafting unless you are max level and have nothing to spend money on.
Be expected to quest and bam grind to level. There are no side activities to do other than deathmatches or ganking others on the pvp servers.
Too much hand holding.
I wish the game had more depth. I truly do not know why they are charging a sub fee for this game. It just does not have anything special about it. However, it is a decent game in its own right. Just not a great one that can stand the test of time.
I'm resubbing. Great themepark with fantastic combat. I'm tired of MMO hopping. This will hold me nicely for the next few months at least. I just wish they'd hurry up with battlegrounds...

Yes, i only bought the game for the graphics.... havent played my free month tho.... about 2 weeks left from free 30 days and i regret buying it. MOney wasted.... im just pretending i never had those 50 bucks. Couldnt play past lvl 18-20. I hope OP enjoy it if you decide to go for it.
I don't usualy like class and level systems in your average MMO and I find the questing to be dull.
As for Tera I love the combat and the questing makes the game flow better so its not making it feel like its a grind.
I don't think I could go back to SWTOR combat after Tera combat I also dont usualy play a healer in MMO's yet I am playing a mystic in tera and love it due to the action thats needed to survive in the game. If you stand still your going to die even if your a tank.
The pvp I am not realy intrested in but there are pvp servers I don't play on one so cant comment on those, but the Vanarch system will allow a guild to take control of provinces and set tax rates pvp status for that zone and what NPC's are used in the towns to train or sell items. With this comes guild quests and prestige from other guilds if you treat people well. From what I can gather you can either try and get voted in or fight your way in.
The art style is refreshing and the Unreal engine has been worked will to make this game realy beautiful. The EnMass guys have thought about various things when it comes to the art style where a lot of MMO's fail at. Female characters will actualy sit side saddle on horses, if your character has long hair certain armours will put that hair up into a bun to stop clipping with the armour which gives it that something special. Shows you what work has gone into the game.
I also like the fact it has collision detection turned on and why cant other new MMO's have this simple option for combat and pvp in their own games is a mystery to me.

It's the best leveling experience I've had in an MMO.
Not much to do at level cap although Nexus should be added "very soon" and battlegrounds to come later.
In response to the OP, there are lots of dungeons to do while leveling up. PVP is mostly unorganized and only on PVP servers.
To me it's basically vanilla WoW with much better combat/graphics.
