I think most people who love the TES series will enjoy GW2 and with out a subscription fee it actually is easier to recommend to players who don't usually play MMOs, since you aren't giving them a recommendation that is going to require an ongoing financial commitment. It's hard to imagine a game giving as much "bang for the buck" for $60 as GW2. Even if played almost like a solo RPG, with out getting into the social aspects or SPVP/WvW, it would still be possible to get hundreds of hours of game play from the game, with out being repetative.
I'm talking about the game itself.
I usually buy games for my dad so he's really not going to care about a sub fee / cost.
But he likes first person a lot and GW2 is third person... and there are still a lot of gimmicky MMO stuff in it, and at the beginning, may scare him off.
GW2 = an actual new game that brings at least one thing the genre never had before.
D3 = D2 with better graphics and forced online play.
So, unless you loved D2 so much you feel the need to do the same shit all over again only online...the choice is simple.

No harm in trying, I suppose.
What people on the outside (and probably some producers) don't understand about MMOs is that it's a hobby activity like model cars or airplanes. You design, build, test and master the use of a model combatant. Then you go out with your friends and run your combat models through obstacle courses designed by people who know how to do that kind of thing, or test them straight up against someone else's model. Sell it to him like that.
Yeah, you get to be a hero and go on quests and fight dragons and stuff. But for old farts who like to tinker with stuff, it's a modeling hobby rendered in 3D on a PC, like Flight Simulator but with swords and trebuchets. Tell him another old fart online said GW2 will be by far the best one made to date, and the perfect one to start with.

How on Earth can you know that? Even if you played night and day during the beta weekends, you wouldn't reach 200 hours of non-repetitive content. This is not something you can know by just watching a video either. So again: how can you know?
The longevity of GW2 is a major concern of mine, which is why your statement raises an eyebrow.
This thread is from a person who disliked D3 and asks if GW2 is any better or different. The question has been answered by people who have similar opinions.
The thread is not about liking D3 or not, but about GW2 being different from D3. It's not hard to understand...
Anyway, since the question has been answered several times already, maybe it's time to lock this since it's degenerating... only my 2 cents though.

My exact sentiments as a veteran MMO player... Same ol' same ol' for GW2. Need something new and refreshing. I am banking on Titan -Blizz/Activisions project. I hope it is a world war themed game

I doubt they will release a new IP cause Blizzard has been about ressurecting their own lost glory for the last decade or so...
Would be refreshing to see an entirely new IP from Blizzard though ....

Gauntlet (1985) was definitely the ancestor of all those action RPG games which the Diablo series is part of.
Not sure how much inspiration early Eastern Action RPGs (such as Final Fantasy Adventure 1991) took from the western Action game Gauntlet. Back then, the world was not as globalized as it is today.

After doing some research:
CEO Mike Morhaime confirmed that it was a new game and not a sequel to any existing franchises in a 2008 interview with Wired magazine
so it's a new IP, seems i was wrong

"New IP" doesn't mean "Innovation". Blizzard never really created anything truly new, they mostly build on the existing and improve it. Not that it's a bad thing, WoW is the shining example of that, and I've played that game for 7+ years. But I don't expect huge innovation in the genre to come from Blizzard, even though I wouldn't mind being surprised of course.

Isn't the RMAH they implemented in Diablo III an innovation for that genre? If so, at least they are capable of introducing innovations.

Look at what happened with D3... they changed how some mechanics work (from how they used to in D2) and there is huge rage about it. Gamers are so hard to please lol. You "change" the game and they complain, you keep it all the same, they still complain....
This thread is moving further and further away from the "main topic" oh right there was never a main topic to begin with :P

First off I disagree that Diablo 3 isn't wortht he 60 bucks.
I've playing that game for 100 hours on one character and still look forward to logging in.
Now... Do I think Guild Wars 2 will be worth 60 bucks? Yes. While it may pale in comparison to other mmos in endgame content (which is by design btw). The game offers unlimited gameplay potential with its scaling pve content and open world 3 server pvp.
I disagree that D3 isn't worth $60. I paid $100 for the Collector's Edition and couldn't be happier.
Guild Wars 2 will probably be a quality game, but if you let yourself get worked up by all the hype, you'll end up just as disappointed with it as you were by D3. Keep your expectations at ground level and you'll enjoy it, possibly even have them exceeded.

Try and get a key for the next BWE, they're being offered on a variety of gaming websites.
After probably 40 hours of playtime and 5% of the world complete, I would say that $60 is a bargain.
"Loading screens" are not "instances".
Your personal efforts to troll any game will not, in fact, impact the success or failure of said game.

Was the "unlike d3" neccesary?

No, there weren't games like Diablo in the 80s.
@OP, most games cost $60. MMOs cost $60 and they will charge you a sub on top of that.

only for its art style world it deserves the 60$ ...
On topic: yes I do think it's worth the 60 bucks...for heaven's sake: you pay 50 bucks and 15 bucks monthly for those so-called "subscription" mmo...
Actually tis a very silly question you ask there /0

After playing Torclight 1 and 2 Beta, POE, Drakensang and GW2 BWE,
in my opinion D3 isn't worth the $60.00.
D3 price should be around $25 - $39.90.
The difference in the content alone.
One thing I have to admire Blizz, they really can turn players to zombies in all their games.
They managed to psycho players to believe its awesome and
fun to play the same content over and over again lol.
