Most SWTOR had less than a 100 people on (only a few were populated) and yes I tried recently
And yet it was pumping on launch day. Dayz low peak could be 10 players online. Difference is swtor has the potential to reach very high numbers of simultaneous connections.
SWTOR isn't persistant, it is incredibly static. In fact, the most static game I ever played.
Its persistent. static is neither here or there.
No one role plays in SWTOR, and even the RP servers the GMs don't moderate AT ALL.
Thats not the fault of the game, that's a fail of peoples imagination.
Guess SWTOR shouldn't be listed here either.
Swtor is one game, are you basing your argument on one game?
Anyway, you don't have to visit this forum section. Everyone who is enjoying DayZ that is more of an MMO than most, will enjoy being here
Yeah i don't, But maybe if i don't say anything one day this site will fill up with all sorts of crap. Then what will it be? a resource for mmorpgs? or a general generic gaming site?
TSW - AoC - Aion - WOW - EVE - Fallen Earth - Co - Rift - || XNA C# Java Development
This game feels more like a mmorpg to me than TOR did for example , much more like an actual open virtual world than just a fleet hub and cutscenes and loading screens between segmented areas.
FFA , friendly fire , persistent world , perma death , mix of npc enemies and players who may or may not be enemies , etc etc makes it feel very much more like an online world than many triple AAA games in the past few years to me.
I'd say Dayz has more true mmorpg features in fact most recent games on this site.
Except for the persistent world which is a must, I didn't know those others were considered true MMO features where as others are not.
It's simply a design direction. A direction that a number of people like in their games. Where as they may dislike other design directions that have been seen in the MMO genre itself.
FFA, friendly fire and perma death don't make an MMORPG, it just makes a game the kind of game that a number of sandbox fans and (MMO) gamers are craving for and would like to have in an MMO.
Maybe don't selectively leave out sections of a quote ?
I referred to those features that said made it feel more like virtual online world to me.
Then I noted that it has a day/night cycle and weather - you cut that out of your quote , and yes I say having day/night cycles is very much something a mmorpg should have.
Selectively? We were talking 'true MMO features' here, and those were the points you mentioned. Are you saying now that those weren't what you considered when you were talking about 'true MMO features' instead of the in your eyes crappy MMORPG's that have appeared the past years, and that in your eyes lack those true MMO features?
Day/night cycles have been around in a lot of MMO's of the past years, and MMO's of the past years have a far bigger listing of MMO features than DayZ. But then again, we were talking 'true MMO features', and in that list the things I quoted of you apparently belong on it, while those other typical MMO features in the MMO's of the past years don't.
Nothing wrong with that. You like a specific kind of MMO and specific gameplay features, while other features that have been common to the point of being almost standard in many MMO's you couldn't care less about. I can see that.

I disagree with it being an MMORPG just as I disagree with D3 being an MMORPG, but whatevs, I can see how it has the essence of what a portion of the MMO playerbase, certainly a large number of sandbox fans, are desperately looking for in an MMORPG. I think that was also the direction that Undead Labs wanted to take their zombie MMO.
The fact that a revolutionary mod like this (actually a complete make-over of a game) can be added actually makes me happy about this site.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Massive...the world is definitely massive in size (bigger and more open than most MMOs) and even in alpha, has more features (well, maybe more INTERESTING features, but that is all opinion) than most themepark MMOs. The game is massive in scope.
Massively multiplayer...lots of people playing..
Game...yup it is a game
Is it? last time i checked it was a MOD. where is the arma II plug so they can get some publicity out of this?
In fact, Its using the arma II engine for networking so Arma II should be listed aswell!

It's funny, everyone whines about how MMOs are stuck in a rut and not evolving, and then a game comes out that offers a lot of what people say they're looking for in an MMO. Word spreads like wildfire and people from a whole bunch of different gaming preferences buy Arma 2: CO, pushing it to (and keeping it at) the top of the Steam charts. People install the game, the mod, log in, have their minds blown and (probably) their brains eaten by zeds (yikes, the swarm!)....
...and somehow...it doesn't fit some definition somewhere and the very existence of a dedicated subforum on a site is cause for complaint.
Let me put it this way, the genre is evolving. For some of us Day Z is a sign of a positive evolution. It's something we can point to and say: Hey, permadeath doesn't scare people off. Player looting doesn't scare people off. Online multiplayer doesn't need to cost millions. 'Niche' games can still rise up out of nowhere and top the charts if players enjoy them enough.
How is this not a good thing?
Yeah yeah, it's buggy and sometimes borked and the inventory management is a pain - but so was Minecraft back in the day, and look at how well that did. Players stick with it out of sheer goodwill and shrug off the unpleasantness because it offers a uniquely fun, immersive experience. And one that's even better with friends. Sure, it takes some organisation, but that's easily done through Steam chat or TS. It takes a while to figure out which servers are best for your playtimes too - I play on a DE server because it's still daylight on the server when I get in from work. Do any of these things make it a less worthy contender for inclusion than...lemme check the list...Evony (lol)? Personally, I think not.
Sometimes change is a good thing, this is one of those times.
As an aside, I missed the poll or I would have voted heck yeah for this sub-forum. So count me as player 121, and add a check in the plus colum with my name attached.
If you like roleplaying, you have to check out the other rpg mods for Arma 2. They offer a type of roleplaying I have not seen in most mmorpgs and offer even more deep rpg than dayz.
Take for example Takistan Life or UrbanLife/CityLife and so on, there are others around aswell. You can join such server without installing any modifications.
If it wasn't for the people here talking about it here the last few days I wouldn't know of it at all. I watched enough vids to know that I'm buying ArmA2:CO just to play this mod.
I don't understand really why Day Z beeing added is a big deal. This community voted for the inclusion of Day Z and that should be an end to it. We have had some great discusions on Diablo 3 since it was listed, also on a community vote and I expect the same from Day Z. If you don't want it listed yeah I understand but it's too late now and you are in a minority. In fairness, yeah the vote shouldn't have been closed so soon but had plenty of votes to get enough idear of the demographic. Day Z has a lot of features we have been asking for, for many years now. If it develops well maybe an mmorpg dev will finaly take the plunge and give us what we want. Mod or not Day Z is totaly relevant and not at all out of place here.
im sorry but im going to have to ask why the mod is added to this site. or at the very least why it is not listed as a pay to use service to some extent.
simply because this is a MoD not an actual standalone game. in that regards you HAVE TO buy ArmA2 before you can use this program.. listing it as a F2P product is false advertising and lowers the integraty and trustablity of mmorpg to provide accurate discription of games.
if i didnt know squat about dayZ i would come in to this assuming this was a direct download f2p zombie shootem up. given the free version of ArmA does not support this mod as far as im aware..
while i dont mind it being listed persay, im against it being listed as an actual game. when it is not. if the program requires another program to use it. then it should be listed under a sub catagory for that other product.
this is no differant then me listing xOS as a stand alone f2p OS when it requires a mac to use it..

There are many games on the gameslist that have innacurate subscription information (hard to keep accurate as many games are continually changing), I'm sure if they were made aware they would change it. Also, as previously noted...your exact points were posted by a mod already in the voting thread. (see below)
MMORPG cannot be your only source for all information regarding every game on the website. Also, if anyone is curious about potentially purchasing a game, I would sincerely hope they would look into it a bit more than mmorpg.com's little one line blurb of information about the game.
I realize it's not an MMO or being advertised as an MMO, heck, it's not even a standalone game! But I personally feel it hits all the right notes for our particular community and I'd be willing to bring it up to the team if it's something YOU guys want.
So, what do you say?
Should we list DayZ here at MMORPG.com (includes forums!)?

Poll attached.
while i agree with you on many things. the fact does still remain, the subscription is listed as f2p as the mod in its self is free to download and play, they should really make a sub catagory for this mod instead of listing it as a whole new game. as its not really a whole new game. its just a mod of a fps game.
while the mod it self looks interesting, which may very well attract alot of players. they really should make sure its listed correctly. as the subscription model for this game is correct in that its free, hense why it needs a tag added to it to state it is a mod of a fps game and not 100% free as they imply.
if there was an ArmA 2 forum this would be fine as they can just add it as a sub catagory of that like i said, the less confusing their game lists get the easier it is for people to find games they want to play.
while i have no issue per say with the mod being posted here as an mmo, i disagree with it being flagged as a f2p "game" when its not, you must buy the standalone game with the expansions to support this mod. which is a tad differant then buying vanilla WoW and then buying the Xps as you can play wow with any of the xps completely. this mod will not work without the whole kit as my understanding goes on it.
and given the intellect of alot of gamers now days buying stuff cause its "popular" i can only see people complaining when they try this and find out mmorpg falsely adverted the game.
im sure you would not be happy to go here find WoW listed as free to play and go to play it and find out you must pay 100 bucks for 9 differant games plus a subscription .
hopefully mmorpg creates a sub catagory in their game lists to have these types of "mmo" mods so people do not get falsely lead to believe its advert.
On the subject of whether or not a mod can itself be considered a stand alone game I feel this arguement is pretty mute. I offer the following link as one of many which points this out. If you need more feel free to do your own search.
DayZ is not the first and will not be the last mod which is greater than the some of it's origins. If you purchased ARMA for the sole purpose of the DayZ mod then it's fairly safe to say you purchased the DayZ "game".

And if you are going to Suggest "controversial" Tittles to be added. Atleast keep the post open for 7 days so you can get a clear picture of the community.
As it looks you added it within 3 days and 120~ votes.
There are 201 votes as of this writing and it's still a landslide "YES". I understand you may be upset about this decision, but it was left to our community to decide, and everyone had a chance to make their voices and votes heard.
With that said, now that the forums are up and we've officially decided to list DayZ here at MMORPG.com, posts of "this isn't an MMO/why is it here?" are going to be considered off-topic in threads outside of this one. I don't want to see threads about the game derailed, so feel free to express your opinion in this thread (as long as it remains civil), but please don't make it your raison d'être to bring this up in every thread of this game's forum. Thanks!
Hmm. Something tells me that if you'd put to a vote on this site 'is SWTOR an MMORPG and should it stay on the list?' (or to a lesser degree for other themepark MMO's like Rift, TERA, DCUO or FFXIV to name a few), it could very well happen that you'll find a majority that says 'no' to both questions
It wouldn't make those any less an MMO though, even if that'd be the result, just like putting DayZ on the list just as D3 doesn't make those games MMORPG's; merely games that people visiting this site are interested in.
Originally posted by tollboothI don't see the issue here... honestly. Why do people have to be so narrowminded? Even if you don't consider it a mmorpg is it really an issue that affects you personally if they add an area for people to discuss the game?
You really don't see the issue? This is a website for MMORPG's. Says so right there in the name. It's why most people came here in the first place. So when you start adding co-op, strategy games and player mods.. what, exactly, is the point of this website? General gaming?
Does adding this game actually hurt me? No, it doesn't. I just will skip it. But there in lies the problem.. if they allow this game, what's stopping them from adding that game? So it just turns the MMORPG list into a cluttered mess of games the community is currently interested in rather than a MMO list to find new MMO's. Which, sad to say, is already starting to happen.
Also, this:

Is anyone forcing you to come to this forum or click on any DayZ link? I think the answer to that one is a resounding no. Also just because you personally are not interested in this mod doesn't mean that others aren't either. So just because you've decided to be a 'Purist' everyone else should not be allowed based on your preferences? That is a little selfish don't you think?
Because, if you have followed the typical discussions concerning MMOs the last couple of years, it is amazing that this mod does so many things so good with just a handful of mechanics. There are so many discussions about instancing, permadeath, item-grind, sandbox, etc. And then they make a mod for an ego-shooter and this feels much more like an mmo than so many other games?
Compare it to TSW. Both games have zombies and play in somewhat of a postapocalyptic world. While TSW delivers a lot of stuff, like animated sequences, complicated skill-system, quests, etc, DayZ just puts you in the midst of everything - a gun, some food, that's it, try to survive! Eventually, both games have a dense atmosphere and are immersive.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
Considering nearly all of the features of Day Z (massive world, online play with 100s of people, persistant servers) are all completely within ArmA 2 itself, not the mod, it seems extremely disingenuous to list Day Z on here but not ArmA 2 itself. The only real feature Day Z adds that ArmA 2 did not already have was the persistant character database across servers. Very little of the actual content in Day Z is new, a fact which would be more than apparent to anyone who had actually played ArmA 2 beforehand.
I can see how it has the makings of a good MMO, I have thought that myself, but as it is it is not an MMO, it will never be an MMO while it is a mod, and to wish it were one does not make it so. The lack of basic logic and knowledge of the base game in this decision is staggering and continues this sites slow slide into a general gaming site rather than an MMO site.

While I disagree with the OP, and did vote yes in the poll, I would like to point something out.
Neverwinter nights isn't listed here.
That's all
You really don't see the issue? This is a website for MMORPG's. Says so right there in the name. It's why most people came here in the first place. So when you start adding co-op, strategy games and player mods.. what, exactly, is the point of this website? General gaming?
Does adding this game actually hurt me? No, it doesn't. I just will skip it. But there in lies the problem.. if they allow this game, what's stopping them from adding that game? So it just turns the MMORPG list into a cluttered mess of games the community is currently interested in rather than a MMO list to find new MMO's. Which, sad to say, is already starting to happen.

Why?
