Chat bubbles are very important for rp, but not completly needed.

But, i don't get it. I RP to become my character 8usually only my main, that's why i like skill bsesd) and immerse myself better, but i'm not a hardcore one. I personally feel far more annoyed that my character is not only voiced, but has is whole background story made for him. Leaving less room for my imagination.

Also, lobby based, FPS PVP in an mmorpg doesn't help.

what so you cant RP a Charr killer or some other RP based douche... there is no reason for open world PVP in this game.. RP or otherwise. Also this is a story based game.. you get to say a lot about your story but of course you cant make it all. You can make up your past most of the time however.

Don't remember talking about open world pvp but thanks for calling me a douche :D

I'm refering to the fact that pvp is in some "proto-reality" crap. I'm not a fan of BG's, but atleast they are a part of the world and make sense in the lore of the world. To many, lore is useless, but to me, if i wanted a "lore-less" pvp game, i'd play an FPS, which i do. Since PVP in this game is already in the same category, it's almost has if it didn't exist to me. I'd play it for fun, but not in an rp way.

Also, TSW is story based (hell, all mmos have story) and it doesn't choose my voice or background. Well, expect eating a bee to get my powers

gonna say this again =P its really silly to base you being able to RP by chat bubbles.. I personally find them to HURT RPing more than to help it.. chat bubbles overlap and arent up long enough most of the time to read everything that was said.

Well solution to that was discovered and implemented ages ago in mmorpg.

    Solution:

What is said in chat bubbles near your character ALSO appear in /say chat channel. What you write in /say channel apear in bubble above your head. (you CAN turn off chat bubbles and don't see them personally !!)

    That allow 3 things:

1.you can follow conversation if you missed something from bubble

    2. you can see what someone said in bubble even if you have camera at diffent angle

    3. you can turn OFF bubble chat for yourself & still participate in conversation

    WIN - WIN situation

NPCs have them already, and you can see chat bubbles from people you are grouped with so why not add them for all conversation.......?

Because, can you IMAGINE how cluttered and ugly the screen would look in one of the big cities when everyone is talking and you can see everyone chat bubbles, it would be rubbish. You wouldnt be able to move for chat bubbles.

I understand RPers like this function though, so maybe they could do it so you can turn chat bubbles on or off for different chat channels, and create an RP channel that the RPers can use to their hearts content

In WoW there where no problems at all with the chatbubbles in Stormwind and such when people where talking. I don't know how big the cities are in GW2 but im pretty sure it won't be flooded with chatbubbles.

Altough chatbubbles aren't required i prefer them when i RP for the following reasons (and they are personal so its just my opinion):

    1. Easyer to keep track off, when its all in one chatbox you sometimes don't have time to read it before it gets flooded when the area is crowded with talking people.

    2. I can see who says what. And with that i can judge if my character would be able to hear it or not. In SWToR you don't have chatbubbles and a insane range of what you can see in chats. When you are in a bar and overhear a conversation you hardly have a clue where it comes from so you have to look for the names who said it and than judge if you can hear it or not without have to look for every person around and decide.

    3. I like to look at the characters when im rping, and with chatboxes in a corner i have to look away. And i noticed that during active rp sersions people tend to forget to look at the chatbox when you running or something.

However its not required i can rp as well without the chatbubbles and as said, having or not having rp bubbles has nothing to do with a game providing a enviorement to RP in. Also i saw someone mentioning he finds it less immersing that the story is decided for him. I never ever use quests and background stories as part of my RP. Those are just game mechanics. In SWToR my main char never been doing as the game makes her do. Still i have a great developed RP character who has her own story rather than the same story as the other players. RP is being creative with what you have, just make up your own things within the lore of that universe.

Like i said, i don't know how the cities look like in GW2, but yeah i suppose there will be areas where it gets flooded, but in general a city won't be that flooded with chats will it? Or maybe im so used to chatbubbles that i find it easy to just not read the bubbles i have no interes in hm. O well we will see.

Looks like you don't need to worry anymore (although I remember people RPing in MMOs long before chat bubbles came along), anyway, good news for those concerned: http://www.arena.net/blog/the-big-beta-weekend-preview

    Improved Chat

Communication in general has been greatly improved, as well. We’re adding the much-requested chat bubbles, as well as map chat and an updated local chat function, both of which make it easier to communicate with other players.

I'm a hater of chat bubbles. I find them an intolerable distraction.

    Archlinux ftw
