There is nothing in GW2 that is sustainable in the form of game play.    Sustainable game play is a must for an MMO to succeed these days.    The fact that these game developers of MMO's these days refuse to embrace anything remotely related to a persistent type world game play boggles the mind.    They load up their games with cheap, one-off game play elements, call it content, and then wonder why their game is dying two and three months down the road.    GW2 will be no different.   TSW will be no different.   TERA will be no different.

Until these games get back to their roots and start giving MMO players persistent game worlds that are more than cheap one-shot thrill rides on a roller coasters to nowhere - they'll never be as successful as they'd like them to be.

I have prepurchased GW2. I have played in the BWEs. I think it will be great fun for awhile, but I have to agree with Teala. I don't see the long term sustainability in game play. Those events are only going to hold peoples' interest for so long. Unless they have regular content releases at a rate we haven't seen, I am not sure it will keep the average gamer occupied for more than a few months.

the average gamer is casual, theres a lot of stuff for casuals to do. I think your definition of what constitutes an average gamer doesnt form part of whats real. GW2 caters to a crowd that is a fussion between moba, fps and mmorpg games all of these genres beiing mainly casual creates an even more casual game. GW2 is meant to be played at any time without having to pay for a sub, much like how a lot of people use Diablo or SC2. And even though you and teala and a minority of the population thinks this isnt what the genres needs, the MAJORITY want these kind of games and companies will always follow the path that gives them more money.

Simply put, unless you are a die hard PVP fan, GW2 probably won't last you 2 months. That doesn't mean it's not worth the $60. If it tried to charge a subscription, then I could see the complaint.  It's a decent game, tweaking some standard MMORPG design elements.

You can play it for a month, and then log in when you want. PVP here and there, do a dynamic event here and there, it won't cost you monthly. It is yet to be seen how often they do expansions though. That could throw a wrench in their non-subscription model if it ends up averaging 15/mo with expansions. I doubt it will though.

I think alot of people underestimate what a good immersive world can do. I've played GW1 from release till now continuously. Never once did HA, GvG or much AB. Most I've done is RA and FA.

Yet the pve has lasted me all this while. I do not even vanquish, I have about cleared about 20% of the zones. Yet I never fail to find fun, I pugged in Thunderhead back in the days, then helped random people with Vizunah Squares and Tannakai Temple, and so forth into Nightfall and EotN.

There's a huge population in pre-searing, when there was no reason to linger in the isolated newbie that doesn't even go up to max level (before the addition of pre-searing quests and Nicholas).

A good immersive world makes people stay and revisit the pve area just for fun and challenge.

I do not see myself ever running out of content in GW2. I can see myself picking a "home zone" and just revisiting often to do the DEs there and keep the zone looking nice and peaceful.

agree very much and not to mention for me every class is interesting so I could see myself actually leveling every class in the game at some point to max. I don't play these games 40 hours a week so it would take me well over 2 months to just do that. Then of course there's the PVP:)

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

    Guild Wars says Hi

I still play it to this day and I hardly ever pvp'd in that game.

Really all of this thread is just a bunch malarkey

You (and others) are like movie-goers that were raised in the musical era.  Musicals were good, and they reigned supreme for years, but then someone produced a movie that wasn't a musical.  A lot of people thought, Why would I go see a  movie that isn't a musical?  What's the point of having a movie unless there is song and dance?

GW2 isn't a musical - meaning, if you come to GW2 expecting to be entertained by the same key structures that came before, you will be disappointed. This isn't a "lets power-level to 80, get superior, exclusive gear and head off for the end-game content" kind of game. As long as your mindset is set in that paradigm, you cannot "get" what GW2 is  all about, and you will be disappointed and bored.

It is a theme park mmo, good for a few months then you'll hop on the next ride.

If your going to tell yourself that once you play game "A" then you have also played all other games on the market past and present then there is no hope for you.  Either you will pick it up or you wont pick it up.  No matter what others on these forums tell you the choice is purly yours to make.  Man up and make a decision for once.

Let's say I make it past the high fantasy setting, because it's done so well, so now I'm leveling. There I run into another turn off.  Going from 1-80 just seems pointless. I hate leveling. Eight toons in WoW (high fantasy) Three toons in RIFT (high fantasy), one toon in swtor.  I'm sick of it.

If you don't like leveling then quit playing games all together.  Leveling your character is basice to any game you will ever play.  They may not call it leveling but you WILL be doing things in game that will make your character better in some form or fashion.  Perhaps "Hello Kitty On-Line" is more your style.  I'm not sure but they may not have any sort of leveling at all.

Let's say I make it past the setting and the standard leveling, again because setting is  done so well plus I can level while pvping. 2 Weeks later I'm at cap. I continue to run battle grounds and WvWvW, much like I have been for the past two weeks. I'm having a good time.

If PvP is the only thing that is making your boat float then by all means do PvP.  As I understand it, GW2 PvP is quite good.  I'm not a PvP'er by any stretch of the word but I did try it out with my Guild the first BWE and I actualy enjoyed it.  The thing about games should be having a good time playing them, not to rush to end game then complain that there is nothing to do.  If you do that, then it's your own fault.  Back in the day it took years for people to max out there characters and then they were not perfect so they kept working on them.  Games these days takes so little time to level up to max level it's no wonder that people complain all the time.

One month rolls by since I've been at cap. Wtf am I supposed to do now. I've ran a couple hundred battle groumds, and spent 40 hours in WvWvW. i'm now asking myself "Are you getting bored."" As soon as that happens it's all down hill from there.

If you think you had enough of the game then by all means leave and stop whining that you have nothing to do.  Grow up and do something.  We are not here to hold your hand, wipe your nose and tell you what to do each and every day that you play the game.

I'm not the type to be filling hearts and chasing DEs. I'm not really the questing type, plus I wouldn't be rewarded with anything meaningful for rerunning DEs. No gear, no AA, just pets and cosmetic gear.

Great! You answered your own question.  Quit GW2 or better yet don't bother playing it and save everyone else on these forums your whining.  The game is obviously not for you.

I just don't see how this game could be fun (that's what it's about, not progression) for longer than two months tops.

I doubt this game would be fun for you.  This game is fun for a lot of the community and plenty of people plan on playing it and they have already made the decision to purchase and play GW2.

I don't know what to tell tell ya. up untill I tried TSW beta I was hoping that would be something folks could fall back on ...now after seeing that piece of crap from failcom I'm hoping to be able to strech out 3 or 4 months with GW2 or there will be no mmo's worth playing in 2012 ..... I've already killed enough Zombies to last a life time and the slow motion combat of TSW is the only modern game I've played slower then LOTR .I've never seen anything like the dodge in TSW ...it's the worst flip  I've seen since a grade 6 gym class perhaps Copper85 we could just spend a couple of months in GW2 dodging things ?

"Those events are only going to hold peoples' interest for so long. Unless they have regular content releases at a rate we haven't seen, I am not sure it will keep the average gamer occupied for more than a few months."

I guess that depends on what you mean by "the average gamer". If by average you mean the prototypical power gamer who plays 4-10+ hours a day and basically races to level 80 to begin their end-game gear-grind and raiding, then I agree that there will be very little to hold their attention after a couple of months, especially when they realize that there really is no end-game exclusive rewards they get at 80, nor any exclusive content they get to partake in.

On the other hand, if by "average" you mean the casual players who have 4-15 hours a week to invest in an MMOG, then you are patently incorrect. Like in any other MMOG out there, there will be PLENTY of content for them to enjoy - in fact, there will be too much content for them to possibly digest before expansions come or there is new content added.

You see, in other games those casual players had to be satisfied with content that was really only there for powergamers to rush through to get to the end game. So, obviously, it was second-rate content because the developers had to keep the end-game raiders happy with their best, exclusive stuff.

GW2, however, gives those casual players end-game quality content throughout their experience and doesn't make them feel like 2nd class citizens or scrubs just because they take a year or two to get a character to the highest level - if they ever do.  Perhaps they level several different characters to 35 or 50.

So yes, your typical powergamer is going to be quickly bored and disappointed unless they enjoy the PvP and don't mind not being able to earn any exclusive, superior gear rewards for their play.  Casual players like me, however, finally get an MMOG that provides end-game quality content whatever our level or ability, content we cannot be excluded from by others.  This is something unique to GW2, and the reason it will be thrilling and satisfying hordes of casual players currently making do with the scraps other games like WoW have been tossing in their bowl.

Yes, definitely way too few casual MMORPGs coming out lately. GW2 really sticks out in the crowd.

What a shocking thread to create on a MMORPG site. MMOS are not designed to be single player games with content being added, subtracted and altered perpetually as soon as someone has experienced it. For me, I log-in to reconnect with my characters and their world. Simple as that really.

I assure you that the way i game is what the majority of the players do and they dont care for anything better because they dont need it The people you see here and forums in general are such a small portion of the actual community that your little voice doesnt really matter. If you did sandbox games like you want would have come out sooner tho.

Be happy tho since in 2 years you will be able to enjoy archage and world of darkness. Meanwhile ill be enjoying GW2 for as long as i want.

You seem angry with all mmorpgs in general also used to feel like you until play GW2, is definitely different than any mmorpg that has played before it s themepark but have some sandbox features, and yes i have played tsw (BWE) and tera (BWE). Just curious you already played Guild Wars 2?

So about these sandbox features...can you list them so I know what ones you are talking about?

Oh and I am not angry.  What you think of as being anger is disappointment and frustration - that is all it is.

All you going to get is a moderation warning or even a short ban because calling people "trolls" is forbidden. The moderators are going to tell you to "report" trolls, not feed them. I know it's hard to accept because some people actually intentionally play with that (bait you, and then report you when you fall for it so you get in trouble instead of them), but that's how it is here, and the mods are actually quite good at detecting such "dirty tricks" compared to other forums.

I'm not defending or attacking anyone here btw, but sometimes, it's better to use the block button (see my signature).

Anyway, end of "out of topic" for me.

Yes, definitely way too few casual MMORPGs coming out lately. GW2 really sticks out in the crowd.

Not sure if sarcasm, but yes, this is a massive problem with MMOs. It's the dungeon/raiding problem that GW2 is trying to fix by first having you play the story version of the dungeon so you're not totally lost when you play with others. In most MMOs you're expected to participate in raiding if you want PvE end game and best gear possible... except the game never actually tells what it's all about because you're either meant to google it or get someone to explain it to you, god help you if you decide to PUG it. It's understandable how a casual player might feel lost in all of it and just give up.

Monthly? I guess I recall Turbine doing that but I wasn't quite sure. I know LOTRO gets updated as well, but I'm pretty sure it isn't monthly.

Yes, AC1 had monthly free content patches for years and years, some with more content than "paid for" expansions of modern games.

This game revolves so much around 1 thing. WvWvW. That is why it charges no monthly fee cause it would never be worth it.

Just enjoy it for a few months and move on. Im not even going to bother doing that, but if your a fan of this game then just go in with that mindset.

That kind of wrong information is what separates people who never played the game and are just bashing it from those who really played it and know what they are talking about. GW2 has a more rich PvE part than most if not all theme park MMOs ever released.
