Massively calls it a mess, r/SWTOR rages

http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/14/sorting-through-the-swtor-server-transfer-mess/

r/SWTOR's response

http://www.reddit.com/r/swtor/comments/v2sa9/massively_joystiq_charaterizes_server_transfers_a/

"dont give them any page views"

"F*** massively and their crap!"

"Game journalism is a joke"

"...this week you could see the bias that was coming before this article was written"

"A mess? What are they smoking?"

"Just a prime example of terrible writing"

Thoughts?

We really need separate forums for every newly launched game. There can be the anti-<MMO> one and there can be the 'what general discussion should be' one. All the lamenting can happen together where each can find solace in like minded can't-move-on-ers leaving the rest of us to actually move forward and discuss meaningful and relevant topics.

I still enjoy SWTOR enough to stay subscribed but I'm more inclined to agree with Massively on this one.  Aion's and DCUO's merger comes to mind as a much better solution than what BW is currently doing.   Also, the lack of pre-information is astounding as the whole situation feels like 'fly by the seat of your pants'.

I think massively just called it how they saw it.

I'm somewhat afraid to click on the reddit link, I fear my eyes will experience internal meltdown.

I love reading SWTOR links.  Is there a more divided game community out there?

    My thoughts exactly.

Since they gave SWTOR a "Game of the Year" award, we have reason to doubt both their eyes and their honesty.

If they are intending to merge the servers then just do it, why require people to do it individually? Those servers are going to be even more empty now if not completely dead which makes it reasonable to shut them down, but what if someone isn't playing now and wants to check it out in a couple of months? If they shut it down they'd need to merge servers from their side either way. If not those people aren't likely to stay in the game when their server is completely empty. So yes.. messy

    Yep

SWTOR imo has not been well managed at all, I feel sorry for all those on the ground who have to deal and implement such terrible management. Yes I could do a better jobs (my opinion).

Free character transfer from high population servers to low population servers would reduce the load on the high population server.  But from what I've heard, high population isn't the problem.

I don't have a clue what they are hoping to achieve.  Is the goal to tell people on low population servers to migrate so they have choice in where they end up?  If so, why not just come out and say this.

IMHO this says more about the Reddit community than about Massively...

How can we be sure that this is in fact your honest opinion?

Eh not sure how they've been messy..

Very very few problems with the actual transfers. They process very quickly. The transfers are pretty obvious. (West coast PvP servers -> to west coast pvp servers, RP-Pvp servers -> to rp-pvp servers...)

I think this is much better then what Rift did with the free transfers early on. All the other games I've played have always charged for server transfers or just merged servers completely.. So that's about the extent of my expirience.

    Havent played ToR in weeks.

Last night I did a transfer of a character "just because", the SWToR.com website seemed almost broken, several refreshes still was a mess, like 2 pages on top of each other.

I did recieve confermation email from EA/Bio about transfer, but I left with a feeling that I was glad I used game cards insead of a CC.

It is messy for several reasons

    • You do not have a choice which server to go to, unless they will allow this later when the transfers have died down, so say you transfer from one server to another and then later on they open up another server to transfer to, that you would have liked will you be able to transfer to it?
    • Will your origin server shut down in the future? Probably, but they are showing no signs that it will
    • Will there be more merges when they introduce mega servers, and have have to transfer / merge / rename again.
    • All servers are being added daily. When I first checked out the transfer, Dxun Battlke Circle was not on the list, so thought it was not going to qualify. Some people may not realise they are adding more servers (which I thought at first) and just go back to playing or quit, instead of keep checking on things (as I do)

Guys, reddit is the best and likely only place you're going to find unbiased game journalism! You don't understand!

i guess it's only unbiased if it agrees with your earlier opinion. people like that only read articles to be vindicated, not to think. oh well. good read, op. i thought it was hilarious.

I transferred four characters in barely 5 minutes. For me it hasn't been an issue.

I think the last time I saw this level of polarization for an MMO was Vanguard. The SWTOR crowd definitely takes home the ribbon, though.

Reddit is just an internet clique, when you agree it's a circle jerk and when you disagree you're buried. It's the worst internet forum I've had the misfortune to visit.

SWTOR biggerst problem is that they are trying to make everyone happy with every decision and by doing so pissing everyone off; free, optional transfers to specific destination servers. This allows those who want to stay behind that option, those who want a high population the ability to get it, and those that fear the big servers will get over crowded if there are free-for-all transfers peace of mind.  What this ended up doing is creating a mess. if anything, the game is over managed...

I did transfer 4 chars very quickly, im amazed how many ppl voted yes. haters stop sabotaging this game. If u dont like it Why bother stay day and night non stop posting ur bullshit. I have read ridiculous posts complaining for the most stupid thing, Whiners leave us alone, ppl like me will support this game no matter what u say and trust bioware will improve it over time, im not going anywhere.

Yeah but go look at what SWTORs compitition was for MMO of the year.

Massively called this one right, SWTOR is a mess and has little chance of changing it seeing as how Bioware hasnt hinted at even knowing what has driven so many players away from it. The voice of the fanboys was too great, drowning out the concerns everyone tried to point out.

So SWTOR players can enjoy looking forward to more useless legacy options, a few flashpoints and maybe a raid or two with some extra character story by the end of the year...adding nothing the game is actually missing or sorely lacking in.
