I installed TSW yesterday around 13:00, played for 10 minutes and came to the conclusion that this game is not for me. Two hours later i started to hate myself for giving up so easily and gave it another shot. Guess what, i had the time of my life, played for 14 hours without logging out (ofcourse with breaks inbetween).
Great storyline, good graphics, sometimes a good puzzle in the quest, so overall i am very happy with this game. I used the ingame browser a couple of times to ask Cleverbot for advice on how to finish a certain quest, he/she responded with either: "How did the chicken cross the road" or "Tree", still havent figured out what Cleverbot was trying to tell me but still Cleverbot did his/her best.
Last weekend i played the GW2 Beta (loved GW1 and i've been waiting for GW2 since the day they announced it) and i must say if i had to choose at this point i would actually choose for TSW. But this is not really a fair choice since TSW launches within weeks and well GW2 uhmm yea....soon i guess. Ah well thank god we are not all the same, that would be really boring.
Why would Koreans be offended by a video game which is although uses modern day settings has nothing to do with current world and its politics? it is still a fictional world and fictional representation of Seoul which is a home for many nationalitties? yes my wife is from Japan, living in paris for last 10 years. Trust me Asians are not that close minded and i have learned a lot about them in last 5-6 years.
Yes her laughing surely says a lot about how we think as in 'not offended by trivial things in a video game'. I think she knows better how Asian feels than someone trying to speak on their behalf.
Oh by the way my friend i play with regularly is Korean and he could care less how Seoul is represented in a video game full of zombies and supernatural.
First off you assume I am not asian. Secondly, if you understand design theory and the rules which create immersion as well as alienation, you would realize that when using real world locations, even in fiction, opens up the doors for greater alienation. Alienation is the opposite of immersion. As an artist who makes game assets as well as 3d content for other forms of media, I reconized right off the bat what Funcom did when creating a stereotype of an asian society without regard for actual cultural properties. Since again it is my opinion and what I call a minor annoyance, and since I also have a massive assortment of "asian friends" to also pull from, yes those who are aware of their own culture and the fact the game is made by a group of non-asians, the art choice is a bit of an alienating experience. Just being aware of it pulls the player out of the gameworld, it doesnt mean one cant look past it after the fact.
It is your interpretation that you get "close minded" from that, but I could argue that it is close minded to suggest culture's and their capital cities with their own unique identity and language are close minded for being offended or aware of the steretype being presented to them by foreigners.
This of course is one of the only things that stood out to me, you are welcome to continue to disagree, but please keep out such titles as "closed minded" and "my asian girl friend laughs at your opinion". This isnt an ego war.

On a side note, who cares about reviewers these days.... especially in MMOs, you really have to struggle to find a decent review. IGN gave SWTOR a 9.2/10 after clocking up 150 hours of gameplay... madness.
I've noticed a lot of comments about this game go beyond "I don't like it" towards some variations of "lots of people won't like it" - I don't think it's about the value of reviews, but just the common impression that the game will be widely unpopular, and that will likely be reflected in the reviews of it. The game just feels poorly done in a way that seems to involve more than just mere personal preferences.
I'll be surprised if it sells more than 200-300k clients, and retains more than a quarter of that after three months or so.. Not because I hate the game, or want to see it fail. I'd like to see it do well, because I can see it has potential..
I guess it'll do well enough though, for Funcom to keep developing it. They seem more devoted to their games, in a way that's about more than money. Might be why they come off as arrogant sometimes, with their sort of popularity be damned attitude, but in the long run, that means there's a good chance it'll reach more of its potential eventually, at least, even if it does as badly as a lot of us suspect it will.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
What would you say if London was represented with a mix of English, but also German and French signs all over the place, because it's a "generic European city"? It would be silly, of course.
Well, Seoul being full of Chinese and Japanese imagery is exactly the same. It's easier for us to ignore it since most of us don't understand the language, but for those who do understand, it's just as stupid as the London example would be for us.

They show small part of Seoul, do you get offended when you go to china town or any other place with mixed nationalities where they put up signs and bords in their own language?

Nice try, seriously, nice try, but you're gonna have to find better than this strawman argument to convince me, and even better to convince the majority of Koreans who will find this representations just as silly as London with German and French signs all over the place would be.

I don't need to try to convince you but i what i said is logical. The part they show of Seoul is Dragon base and it is common sense to assume that it is inhabited by different nationalities in that area (head of Dragons are mix of Japanese and chinese, they even have monks in there)
. Please feel free to speak on behalf of all the Koreans though!; it is like going to china town or south hall in England and complain about signs and boards in foreign language everywhere.
My friend with whom i play lot of MMOS is Korean by the way and he doesn't even care, so atleast that is one Korean who couldn't give a rats ass.

How do you get making a statement on behalf of all asians from this "One of the smaller things that annoyed me.."
I clearly say its MY OWN opinion. "So come on now", dont go putting intent or words into my post that were not originally there. I made a personal clearly stated opinion on one of the elements that annoyed me and you managed to turn it into something else entirely. Lets keep it objective, if you cant please dont respond to begin with.
Everybody has some Korean friend who "doesn't care" when he needs one... ;-)
I also happen to have a Japanese wife and i am half Japanese myself.... and she is always here when i need her. Now continue please. Tell me more how much Koreans and Asians will be offended by this.

What I mean is that it's not because you, your wife, your neighboors and the 10 other people you know didn't vote for Obama (just a theoritical example, ok?) that Obama didn't win the previous presidential elections. Exceptions only confirm a rule.
A person living in Seoul will be like "what the hell are those Chinese and Japanese signs doing here" just as a person living in London would wonder "what the hell are those French and German signs doing here". If you want to create an immersive, realistic virtual world, you try to represent the general look of a city, and not an exception.

I can be wrong, but I think at this point you're just trying to grab and use any opportunity to bash the game however much you can. You're a big, huge fan of GW2, you've played TSW and decided it wasn't a game for you, and now all your posts regarding TSW I see, no matter what subject, is about trashing and bashing the game in any aspect that's being discussed.
I've seen a number of GW2 fan(boi)s do that, spending a lot of their time and posts bashing other games they've no interest in playing. I don't get why people are so avid on using every opportunity to bash games that aren't their favorite as if they're only satisfied until a game has been completely put down on the ground, instead of just moving on and spazz on the game they're interested in playing.
This whole argument is just lame: it's a game, I doubt that 'the majority of Koreans' will be offended and insulted if the imagery isn't 100% correct, if I played a game that was supposed to be London or Paris and had some things in it that don't belong there, I'd frown or laugh and simply move on, realising it's just a game, nothing more. But hey, it's a nice gimmick argument for some to keep up a bashing routine.

How is that any different then you telling me i need a lot more to convince all the Koreans? it is always good to talk about yourself when a topic is at hand instead of including entire country into it just to give more weight to your opinion and make it look more important. very old and bad tactic.
I am beginnign to see a pattern here now, something i have been noticing since yesterday.
A person living in Seoul will be like "what the hell are those Chinese and Japanese signs doing here" just as a person living in London would wonder "what the hell are those French and German signs doing here". If you want to create an immersive, realistic virtual world, you try to represent the general look of a city, and not an exception.
You like to draw real life comparisons only when it is convenient even when i gave you example of south hall and chinatown. A lot of different nationalities living in a foreign country and using their own language signs is not some very shocking thing in todays world. But ncie try in making a mountain out of a mole.
Not sure how this 'seoul' thingy got thrown in here but as a Korean, I don't give 2 cents about it. :P
edit1: bleh, this forum doesn't take Korean input.
According to certain posters you should be very offended and if not well you are an excpetion to the rule and it will continue to be so till these people find a group of angry Koreans ready with torches and pitchforks..everythign is an exception till then. Convenient isn't it? lol
Graphics: I had to update from 296.x to 301.x to be able to max everything and see it. And that after couple restarts, as the game didn't seem to "pick up" the change of settings.
After that, graphics of the world, lights, effects, everything went from "meh" to quite good (and far beyond maxed GW2, mind you).
Animations: feel "weird" like GW2 ones. Nowadays nobody uses motion capture anymore, apparently - instead of going ahead, devs are going backwards.
Story: *very* compelling, intriguing, got my curiosity hooked up from the very start, unlike SWTOR (strong selling point: story, which bored me to 1st minute) or GW2 where you can either be stuck static "cutscenes" or skip.
The voice acting is superb, with all different accents, well done there.
Combat: usual tab stuff for single target + active dodge roll + "aimed" front cones + GT aoes. Nothing new there, exactly the same as GW2 (which is by no means new either, it's been in place since DAoC times. The only "new" combat is DN, Tera, or maybe Neverwinter (someone could even say Darkfall) - everything else has been around the block for 10 years.
Skill system: this is the real "novelty", hands down the best one of the past few years, once you get how it works.
So overall.. not a masterpiece, ok. Will not be the <insert game name> killer or 2nd coming of anyone, however has its perks and with some more polish could turn out into a good product.
Unlikely to get "bad reviews":
- first because nobody gives bad reviews anymore: if you do it on forums, they call you hater/troll. If you do it on blogs, you fail cause nobody reads you, and if you do you turn into a Gaming portal.. and they all getting paid by publishers anyways.
- second because even if not 2nd coming of anyone, it's really not that bad.
(And this comes from someone who will NOT play it, but is genuinely interested in trying out every game out there and make his own personal opinion, not waiting for PR people or trolls to tell him what should or shouldn't like).

Unlike many here (and that includes very virulent TSW fans who regularly troll the GW2 forums even though they haven't even played the game), I ONLY post on forums of games I play or intend to play. If you look my post history, I didn't post on the TSW forum before this week end. Why I'm posting now is because I'm actually playing the game, therefore I'm able to give an informed opinion about it, even if it's negative, and guess what... even if you and your friends don't like it.
Don't worry, as soon as the beta is over, you won't see me post here anymore, just like before this week end. I have enough respect for the TSW fans to not trash their forums for months about a game I don't play, and I actually wish they would have the same kind of respect for the players of the games I play. But as long as I play, and I will keep on during the whole week end because I'm the kind of player who likes to test things toroughly before making a final opinion, I will also post here and give that opinion... even if you don't like to read it.
For now, I'm clearly not impressed by what I've seen, and it's the same impressions that I had a couple of months ago when I first tried the game. Some things have slightly improved, but generally, it's sitll not "good enough" for me. And the Korean city with Chinese and Japanese signs didn't help my immersion, it's a part of my griefs, even if it's a minor one and I could live with it eventually.
'nuff said.

Any korean that doesn't know Chinese is going to have a very hard time living in Korea.
Most newspapers are half korean and half chinese.
It is pretty funny to read why I should be offended or w/e, but seriously?
Mass Effect3 takes place in London and I'm pretty sure that wasn't 100% accurate.
Gdemami - Informing people about your thoughts and impressions is not a review, it's a blog.
Okay, just so those of you grasping for straws can understand some history you apparently haven't learned:
WWII: Japan rapes and murders a ton of Chinese and Koreans, amongst other nationalities, and occupies Korean and Chinese territory. The Japanese still lay claim to what were traditionally Korean islands (Dokdo), and a lot of Koreans are still pissed about this.
Post WWII: China and Russia prop up North Korea, China greatly aids North Korea in the Korean War, especially at a point where it looked like North Korea was going to lose, effectively turning the Korean War into a draw. Lots of Koreans were killed, lots of families are still torn apart, and we all still know how fucked up North Korea and its relationship to South Korea is today.
Basically, Korea as a nation and many Korean people have a whole shitload of reasons to immensely dislike the Chinese and Japanese, still.

Have you wondered why Tera, TSW, SWTOR and just 'insert any MMO here' playerstroll GW2 forums? you guys surely do get picked on a lot. What are the chances that GW2 fans actually do trash all other MMOS at any given oppertunity. i have been noticing this a lot for last week or so. Tera is out and TSW is in as a new target for bored GW2 fans and i see same 4 or5 names that i have been seeing for months on other MMOS like SWTOR, Rift etc.
Please do not play the victim card i frequently go through GW2 forums and i have seen TSW players posting minimum inflammatory comments or start the shit just to get rise out of the players. I have pre orderd both GW2 and TSW and so far in my observation TSW players are lot more mature when it comes to avoiding conflicts like this and sticking to what they like.
Well, I finally got to play, and unfortunately I can tell this game is not going to get good reviews. I wish it were; I really do. But it is what it is. The good news is MMOs usually get better with time, so while I wont be playing at launch I'll definitely check back in in the future. I really wish FC the best of luck.

i dont know about the other people playing this game, but i personally hate feeling like im a Korean Esport gamer playing SC1...
im an FPSer i use my mouse to shoot not fking look at the trees. only real beef i have with this game is the controls.
some of the quests are a pain in the backside though, had to boot up google on my 2nd pc to find spoilers on how to complete one of the many tiers of a quest.
but thats part of the game play immersion so i dont rag on that too much.. just the fking controls piss me off.
i guess enough people will love/play this game to make it worth its production value. i personally am only going to play until my beta weekend key expires "monday" morning.

First off, Its Beta. Why is an FPSer playing MMORPGS, and complaining that the controls arn't more like a FPS? As far as the second PC, you do know that there is an ingame browser, or did you just play 30 minutes? How is it anything like a console game?
God, explain your posts please. lol.
first off its beta? what a p[athetic excuse. game that is due to release in 2 weeks wich was already delayed cause it was £"!$%"£ and we should think oh yeah its gona be great when its out cause you know this is only a beta, game for this close to release should already be veryvery close to what it is at release. so no " its only beta " excuses at this point cheers!

I would point out the fallacy, rather the possible validity and perspective of your post is ruined by the fact your profile says you live in New Zealand, just as Sameer's says he is in India. I would wonder what the Indian reaction would be if they played a level based on the capital city and yet it was mirroring Pakistani art and designs, connoting the idea that the artist doesnt see a big difference between the two.
Just saying you guys dont really make a compelling counter argument based on where you live. Ethnic makeup and actual cultural and national identity are two different things.
Also what I am getting from a few responses here is that there is a confirmation bias at play, some sort of child like pvp mode fought on the forums between percieved fans of two different games. Its silly and needs to stop.

Informing people about your thoughts and impressions is not a review, it's a blog.

Combat speed is unbearably slow, thats all there is to say.
People nowadays, in particular, prefer fast action based interesting combat. Definitely not slow.
I have pre orderd both GW2 and TSW and so far in my observation TSW players are lot more mature when it comes to avoiding conflicts like this and sticking to what they like.
first off its beta? what a p[athetic excuse. game that is due to release in 2 weeks wich was already delayed cause it was £"!$%"£ and we should think oh yeah its gona be great when its out cause you know this is only a beta, game for this close to release should already be veryvery close to what it is at release. so no " its only beta " excuses at this point cheers!
