Will this be THE mmo for you? I have a feeling it will be great fun for a little while, then droves of people will lose interest in it a couple months in as the fun of insta-RVR wears out. I just don't see what it is doing that is so great besides being F2P after purchase. I mean, it's not like it can surpass vanilla DAOC in the PVP department.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of replies as to how long people think but I'm not sure how anyone would really know at this point, even people in beta. When I get bored of it i'll let you know how long it was. Of course if they keep content coming it will surely help.
Surpass DaoC in PvP? Nah, but it brings back that feeling of true large scale warfare. So that alone will drive in a large community. Then you've got the SPvP, and the talks of tournaments for it and all the likes, that will bring in a good amount.
then you've got PvE, and GW2's PvE is about, well WAY better than DAoC's. So it WILL surpass it there. then you've got all the mini games, crafting, alts.... We got a lot to do!
Me personally, i'm hoping till AA comes out, so about 2 years.
Between the good WvW (you have to look past beta to see it, don't make assumptions on servers off beta lol), the crafting, and a more immersive world, i can see that happeneing. If it can fill that PvP feel for me, like DAoC did, maybe i will stay with it for as long as i did DAoC. Which is about 6 years.
Plus once the content starts to feel same ole same ole, we will already have an expac, plus they've "talked" about changing content from time to time, so when you re-level it won't be exactly the same.
Point being, there is a lot of pluses!
The "Youtube Pro": Someone who watches video's on said subject, and obviously has a full understanding of what is being said about such subject.
The honest answer is: nobody can tell that for sure, at this point.
Ask a month after release. Then people will have a better grasp to make an educated guess.
You mean like all themeparks? Will tons of players leave? Yup. Will a dedicated core playerbase remain? Yup. The only thing that matters is, will there be enough players to keep making money for Anet? That, only time will answer.
How long is a piece of string?
Judging from your post, you have not played GW2 yet........
Yes, This game is PvE with PvP elements.
Yes, I am in all Betas and have Pre-purchased.
I see way to many people coming here thinking GW2 is MAINLY PvP. It IS ***NOT***!!!!
GW2 is nothing like GW1 and that mindset needs to get out of here.
GW2 will deliver and I can't wait for it to release.

>>How long will it keep you interested?<<
2 months, 1 week, 4 days, 16 hours and 22 minutes. Give or take 30 seconds.
Should a game in this genre not actually grow on you?
instead of making predictions about how long it will keep you intrested?
this is the only game (period) that im excited about currently. although PS2 definitely looks interesting as well. unlike awesome games like Skyrim, ME3, BF3, etc., GW2 isnt just another $60 game. id pay $60 just to play the WvW portion. so i see myself playing GW2 for a very long time. i do, however, feel regret for buying D3.
When I get bored with GW2 I suppose I will get the expansion packs.
Roll the Dice
Anywhere from 1 day to 10 years.
i played DAOC, and imo, GW2 has already surpassed it in every way. WvW has been executed almost flawlessly.
First mmo that catched my real interest in a long while. YES.
Is this THE mmo for me? Nope.
More of a sandboxy person here, so AA is closer.
Still seem like very solid game and I'll enjoy it.
For how long? That's really something I am curious myself...
My answer doesn't just go with GW2 but goes with any mmo: It depends on what kind of group you find to regularly play with. Having a solid group of friends in-game makes all of the difference to me. I can put up with a mediocre game as long as I have fun people to run around with. The real question is: are you a solo player or a group oriented person? Sounds like you are into pvp so I'd reccomend finding a good pvp guild that will offer more than just constantly kill kill kill. Nothing wrong with making new friends & having a good time while pvp'ing. I have confidence that Arenanet will keep the content coming and give groups of players new content to complete. If nothing else, at least it doesn't have a monthly fee. Take a break and come back later if you get burned out.
Already lost interest since all that we got is the PvP and it really isn't that great of PvP.
Is the game fun: Yes
Not a MMO however and a long way before it can be called a MMO. Just an update GW1 with to much flash.
Probably going to try and get a refund after testing TSW PvP this weekend.
.. And there it is. The true motivation behind the thread.
As for how long people will play... WHO CARES?! As has been said quite a few times before, the game has no sub. You just pay the box price, and people have already gotten more then 60 hours worth of content out of the game. That's a steal. Simply put, it doesn't have to be a long lasting MMO, but that it simply has that potential is impressive enough as it is. How many other MMOs have come around these passed few years that have been able to hold people's attention for more than few months? I can't think of any.
- As for the real topic of this thread:
If you don't 'get' this game, there are quite a number of threads on this forum alone that explain what it's doing well, and what is being done differently with this title. If that doesn't appeal to you, then it doesn't appeal to you.
If WvW is the only thing of interest you have in this game, then I have to ask.. is this really the game you want? I mean, the WvW is pretty damn good. When the populations are balanced. But the game isn't really based around it. It's a side bit of content that is a hellova a lot of fun to do. This video kind of sums it up nicely (even if it's geared towards the lvling exp complaints)

The game offers a ton of different stuff to do, and it does them well. If you find yourself checking off all of the games content as a 'no thanks', then the question really boils down to, why are you interested?
You've just answered my main question. Is GW2 like the GW.
thanks!
"Everything is mine and your woman too"
Get one now and save us all the headache of having to listen to you flame GW2 all the time, OK?.....bye....cya
The game is indeed really fun to play, but how long it can keep me interested is unknown seeing as how I've only played it for a couple weekends.
At the moment I'd say I'll probably play it for 2 months or so then get bored because the lack of variety in pve, but that is just conjecture.
Questions like this are allways hard to answer upfront.
But there is one thing i know for sure, GW2 will be a game i keep returning too, just because of the simple fact that there is no sub.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
if the only tangible goal available to me 2 months after release is a cooler looking hat .. probably not long. We shall see. Here's to hoping.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
Hmmm, I don't PVP at all. I still play LOTRO (though not enthusiastically) so GW2, based on what I've seen in the Beta Weekend Events, will have more of the PVE content I enjoy at launch than LOTRO has now. I honestly expect to be interested for more than a year.
I'm very confident I'll be playing this game for years. Coming from a person who has grown to be happy with an MMO that keeps me happy for two months, that's a pretty bold statement, but I stick by it.
The game provides more fun than any other MMO I've played since vanilla WoW. There is a huge amount of content redundancy. The world is absolutely massive. The professions all play differently, different builds with in a profession can play very differently. Each race has it's own personal story progression and there is variation through biography choices and choices made during the branching story that provide variation for each race. The game rewards exporation and provides an extremely non-linear method of providing PvE content to players.
I'm an alt-a-holic and this game is clearly the most alt friendly MMO ever. Replayability is massive.
I fully expect to get 1000 hours+ from the PvE content that ships with the game, over the course of playing six characters to a reasonable level of "completion" beyond the level cap. I also expect to get many hundreds of hours from sPvP and WvW.
I have faith that free and paid content expansion will extend the play experience well beyond those estimates.
The lack of subscription fee allows for interest to wax and wane over time, with out the need to continually justify a mandatory monthly cost. The server Guesting features means there is a built in solution if your server population patterns see PvE participation drop below a certain threshold. The Trading Post is global, shared between all servers in the same data center, so server population won't effect the overall economy. Arenanet have already confirmend they will be constantly pushing new Dynamic Events into all zones across the game, to keep things fresh, which further improves replayability. Level scaling means that even a max level character can have fun returning to lower level zones in the game, in order to experience the new content that has been added since launch.
It all adds up to an almost perfect recipe for an MMO you can and will want to play over the long term.
