I can understand it. TSW make the same mistake for pvp like Star Wars
I wouldn't say it's the same mistakes, but more so that the game has really focused on atmosphere, story and lore and not shown any of the PvP before this weekend. Hard to have it as your favourite if you haven't tried it much at all. Anyway, probably a bit early to tell if PvP will be good or not.
I messed around with the game during the last 2 betas for about 5 hours. Don't know why so many people are complaining about the game's grapics, I think the game looks beautiful. The game looks like a combination of Alan Wake and Dream Fall, which are both games that I loved, and also felt were under appreciated.
One of things that I think Funcom does consistenly well in all of it's games is sound. TSW fantastic audio design truly enhances the overall atmosphere of the game. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed music and ambient sounds that I experienced during my limited time with the game during the beta.
I , like many, liked the atmosphere, but I also like the fact on one quest I had to google/research the answer. Not from a game site, but it was concerning a composer......... I hope there is alot of this. I don't know if I didn't investigate well enough in-game, but at least I wasn't spoon fed.
I am still up in the air on buying, I do like it, but I don't feel that "have to play this!"
For me it was the questing. I really like the illuminati dialogs and vibe over the templar from my first bwe. The combat makes it hard to get into as well as the cheesy opening but it gets better and will grab you if you stick to it. First bwe I was not interested after the last though, I'm kind of on the fence and think I might grab it for at least a play through.
I don't really get those that think it is bad. I was always under the impression they were going for a B Horror movie vibe with this game. Seems they hit it well to me. The story is interesting and you have that campy dialogue like you would expect. One of the few mmos I actually care to find more out about the story line. If anything I wish there was even more backdrop story wise. Like it would be nice if the whole Inferno schtick was more fleshed out as to what that was all about and why it was happening.
Far as lore goes this game is excellent imo. Nice to say that about an mmo for once that doesn't have orcs, elves, etc. I would say dragons but unfortunately I think even this game has them XD
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I can understand it. TSW make the same mistake for pvp like Star Wars
525 abilities is a PVPrs wet dream. This is what brought me to TSW.
The PvP wasn't the problem in swtor. It was a plus. There just wasn't enough of it.
How many 15 munite battle grounds can a person do? The PvP community was bored to tears in swtor because of a lack of options.
With SWTOR expertise is the problem imo.
It makes trying a new class in PvP a chore. They had originally said that PvP gear was only going to provide 1-3% edge.
Last time I checked it gives 20% more damage and at least another 10% in damage reduction. That's just the Battlemaster gear.
The other problem is CC. There is an insane amount of CC in SWTOR. Which is fine when playing with randoms. However when playing at the highest level you aren't playing the game. Your watching your character do nothing because your cc'd.
Only awesome pvp mmo coming out is Planetside 2 (which will consume me of course ). Maybe AA and The repopulation will have it too, but sandboxes are very unpredictable.

I played AoC or "Age of CC" as I think it felt like in PvP, so the same thing as SWTOR (it was pretty skill based in AoC though, but not fun for a noob). I have seen very little of this in TSW, I have been following this guy http://www.twitch.tv/oddver/b/322535593 and he is playing a melee character with one cc, one anti-snare and a dash and the rest "regular" abilities and he is doing fine. Not a problem with stun locking or anything like that.
The CC's in TSW have pretty long cooldown and short duration with diminishing returns/immunity and because you have a limited set of ability slots, every cc you bring takes away another useful ability.I think they have hit spot on with their system.
In beta they totally nailed Kingsmouth. The weird occult stuff. The slightly edgey behaviour of the people. The slowly revealed sense of what's caused it all. I was really impressed. I guess this spills over in to the questing, because it's the way the questing uses the lore and atmosphere. The quest where you work out where to go by following the gaze of creepy crows? I think that was my 'they're not just phoning this in' moment.
I definately have to say the ability system was a win for me. The atmosphire was well done too though but in a way it wasn't all that scary to me so meh.. it has the right appeal but not to the point where you're crapping your pants from seeing all the living dead and airy foggy area.
I didn't play it a ton maybe 8 hours total over the 3 day weekend if that probly not even that much.At first the tutorial I finished it and logged off pretty meh at the game but the more I got to play it and understand I began changing my tune about it I hadn't planned to buy the game at all tbh or any game from funcom in future after AO and AoC but I decided to keep m,y preorder and see how it goes.I love the sklill system myself and the fact can switch stuff around and not boxed in sorta like AO without the ip system.

You aren't the only one having that experience, I was so interested in the game, but the start just felt off. It wasn't like I thought it would be and I got annoyed. Coming back and playing some more the game grew on me and after a while it just clicked in place. TSW is a game that grows on you as you play.
I think its allways a combination of several things that makes a game attractive.
I think its the combination of Atmosphere, lore and Quests that sets this game appart from the rest of the AAA± MMO´s. Its different enough to warrant the game its own place in the scene.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Any reason why *combat* didn't make the list? It's only the thing that players will be doing like 90% of the time you know....
:P
actually a good variety of quests in this game so number is probably good bit lower than 90%.. maybe 75%:)
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. Liked nearly every bit of the game... but i guess the persistant pvp zone stood out for me.. had some great fun in there
I truly love the atmosphere of the game.

Regarding pvp, meh.

For me the quasi-realistic theme. That and the ability wheel. Oh and I cannot forget the avatar customization. Damn why do we only have to choose one?
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
Contemporary horror scene ie atmosphere, skills instead of levels, design of the quests and thought put into some of them, no elves is a big plus too.

I would say the best thing about it is the setting.
So many parts of this game are so much what a MMO should have that it is hard to say.
Maybe the atmosphere...Only game that made me feel this much in a living world was the orginal Resident Evil and that wasn't a MMO.
The atmosphere
No matter how cynical you become, its never enough to keep up - Lily Tomlin

Hard for me to break it down to one thing.I chose questing, but the atmosphere/ability wheel/lore it's drawn me in.

the atmosphere/setting
he investigations quests and story.
rest of the game is utterly subar imho. but if i could experience ONLY the things i mentioned to the exclusion of all else i'd sub.
