How much does an evening at the movies cost if you go alone? In the U.S., I can see a movie for about $10 if I don't buy snacks or a drink. So, if I can enjoy a MMO for three hours in a month, I'm getting my money's worth of entertainment from it. If I play an hour per day on weekdays and four on weekends, that's about 36 hours per month, or about $.40 per hour. At that rate, MMOs are cheap.
But, I want to hear how expensive a movie is in the UK. Maybe your ticket prices are so cheap that it makes more sense to see a first-run movie if you want to be entertained.
If im paying a subscription i better play 24 hours a day to get my moneys worth which is pathetic. Sorry but the entire game is worth the retail price only. The Subscription is the entrance to the milking chamber.
I would consider a $15/month subscription if the game is free to download.
And not, im not being a cheap-ass.... im actually being smarter than the companies who try to rip my pokkets off while giving me a crap mmo. Sad people dont see it that way and keep giving them money for nothing. At least my money is well spent elsewhere.
If you want to play a game that charges you for the box, then allows you to play online as much as you like without paying more, play a console game. However, don't complain to me when you get bored after a month. Those types of games are designed so you will play them for a week then buy the next game. Instead of spending $15 per month on a subscription, you spend $120 or $240 on new games. The $15 subscription fee is simply a way to support continued development of the game.
Free-to-play games have diluted the sense of value in too many people's minds. Sure, you get to play a game for "free" but you get screwed on quality if the game doesn't do something to encourage people to buy something from their cash shop. Name one free-to-play game that didn't start as a subscription game, but still has the quality of subscription games. There are only a handful, and they all manage to squeeze MORE than $15 per month out of people who want to play it as their primary MMO.
Guild Wars is the only exception to the above. They managed to make their game so efficiently that the box fee paid for continued development. Expansions continued to fuel the development, but only due to the popularity of the game in Asia.

That's not the point. The point is that the current subscription fees are not justifiable anymore and are nothing more than free money for the publishers, money that we happily part with because it's about the cost of a movie ticket. It's not about the cost anyway, $15 is nothing. We're being taken advantage of and that is simply not right.
Publishers are aware that most players are ignorant of the fact that subscription fees are mostly pure profit and only a small percentage, if any, is actually used to pay for server costs, bandwith and future development. They won't say anything thing because it's free money and they want to ride it out as long as possible.

Dude, on average, you get about 1 content patch every 3-4 months. In that time, you have paid $60, which the cost of a full game, yet the free content patch does not reflect that value. What do content patches usually add? A few quests or an instance? Maybe a new PvP area? All for the price of a new game. You're being ripped off and you're defending it.
It seems to me if roles were reversed there would be a bunch of pissed off Americans. I doubt more than 10% (Random number) would pay $20+ to play any mmo let alone TSW.

Oh come on. The conversion rate is at the lowest right now between the euro and the dollar. It's barely over 1.12.
* Good, honorable, gamers will continue to pay the bills so freeloaders can enjoy the game. * Sandboxers and Carebears are 2 sides to the same coin.

this has been a huge problem in the P2P MMO world... trion worlds is honestly the only company I have seen to put out decent content updates every 2 months since release.
also as for the OP europe is straight getting hosed just look at the monthly prices of other current MMOs for them not sure how funcom is justifying this price.. if you can't see that.. I dunno what to say and it's not the VAT...

How are you being taken advantage of? Do you feel that the exchange rate between your currency and US dollars makes it unfair? There are plenty of reasons for adjusting prices in foreign markets, most of which take risks and exchange fees into account. Do you think subscriptions are unfair? If you think subscriptions are unfair, play a free-to-play game or go work for a game company for free. They have bills to pay and their employees have bills. Without your subscription fee, they can't continue to run the servers and develop new content.
If you think a subscription is free money, that is wrong. Most game development projects are very expensive. Take a look at SWTOR. They didn't make their money back, and the game has been out for six months. They still need more subscription charges just to break even. Many games are like that, especially when they can only grab a hundred thousand players instead of a million.

That's still more than what you get from most single-player PC games and typical console games. You pay $60 and you don't even get a month out of them, unless they have very good multiplayer. Most non-MMOs last me a week, maybe two before I get bored, and I have a full-time job. If you play them like you say you want to play MMOs (24 hours a day) you probably get bored after a few days. The only thing that really bothers me is they are charging a ton for subs, PLUS an item shop at launch. I mean pick one or the other the quality of the game does not justify the level of the greed.

Greed? I don't see how greed plays in. They are allowing another cash flow system. Hell, if I were them I'd invent 10 more. The more cash flow systems just helps the bottom line and gives people more different avenues on what to pay for and when. Admittedly most gamers these days are lower classed citizens and probably getting welfare so the money is tight...that however doesn't mean we should fit the bill for them and suddenly change the world over for them and hand them their gaming on a silver platter.

Not it really isn't. The only reason you get more out of a patched instance is because you run it over and over again to get new gear. That's not more content, that's replaying the same level over and over again.

Are the servers going to be worldwide or seperate for different regions? I wonder if lifetime sub would be 200 quid. Would be a lark.
Nope, we'll all be too busy laughing at the morris dancers down south while ordering a Welsh leek curry from the Bomb'ay takeout in Ireland.
