VO's and cutscenes: "More enjoyable than SWTOR ?"

SpottyGekkoSpottyGekko Member EpicPosts: 6,916

Maybe I'm just not enough of a SW fan...

I found SWTOR's VO's and cutscenes very professionally done, but they never really grabbed me. It was almost as if they were too full of "epic" and ended up being lifeless and... sterile. And the "conversation options" tended to distract me, most likely because I was too focused on manipulating my dark/light ratings. Perhaps somehow the knowledge that my "answer" was only relevant to my alignment points made it all trivial.

I really feel that the voice acting in TSW is often better than in SWTOR. The dialogue is delivered with more emotion but less drama. There is no "epic" in TSW, it's just ordinary people talking. Perhaps it's because they are more gritty and real. If anything, the survivors in Kingsmouth could show a bit more terror, lol

I actually don't mind repeating quests in TSW, and I'm currently doing my second run through Kingsmouth. The XP is good, and the quests themselves are fun. I'm even happy to watch some of the cutscenes a second time, which is something I cannot say for SWTOR.

Somehow, the voice acting and cutscenes in TSW just feel a million times better than SWTOR, even though the cutscenes themselves are not technically as good.

I'd say the voice-acting is on par with SWTOR.

I'd say the script for TSW is superior to SWTOR.

The reason the voice-acting sounds better in TSW all around is because they have a better script to work with imo.

The characters have more charcter in TSW.

    This.

I'm finding the characters much more believable in TSW, the script is far superior and there is no distraction because I'm concerned about dark/light side points. I think the story aspect works in a far better way than SWTOR simply because you aren't taken out of the world all the time and in to instances to get your story progression, it makes the world much more immersive.

Love the TSW cutscenes and voice-overs.

Some players are bothered by the fact your character is "mute" during the whole ordeal, but I like that- puts the focus on storytelling.  Few NPC's even joke about your character being mute during their scenes.

Most of the time the cutscenes have nothing to do with giving you directions for the following mission, they serve to flesh out the NPC's personality and immerse the player in the setting.  Damn fine voice-acting and writing.

It’s not that TSW are better, but different, and it’s a matter of taste, in SWTOR the characters are standard fantasy/sci fi archetypes, the plot and themes are restricted by the IP, so they lack punch, whereas in TSW you have a game controlled by the writer who can have his characters swear, make modern day references and act like real people.

It’s the difference between a conversation between a wizard and an elf in a castle, and a gangbanger and a crack-head in an alley. One is more escapist , the other is more real to us, and dramatic. As Battlestar Galactica, and Game of Thrones recently showed you can have realism within sci fi/fantasy, but even then the lack of modern day references detaches you.

I also prefer no dialogue options as your character can be more uniquely yours, and not an archetype.

I liked the way it was done better in SWTOR myself.  It was quite jarring for me to discover that all my characters are mute and can't even sign.  Talk about immersion breaker.

I like the voice acting better in TSW, and while to my eye the cutscene animations themselves are significantly worse than TOR's, I think the choreography is better in TSW.

The ability to participate in the scene is neither here nor there for me, as the game's have somewhat different focuses, but I do think even TOR's sometimes limited PC dialogue created a better conversation rhythm than what TSW offers.  I'm one of those folks that does read through quest text and such in my MMOs, but holy crap are TSW's NPC's long-winded.

Now I would say the opposite, I'm left to use my imagination as to how my character would respond, far better for me than have a couple of ready made answers that hardly ever fitted how I felt about my character in SWTOR.

I liked making decisions in SWTOR, and especially, making them in a group.

But overall I'm enjoying TSW cutscenes a lot more; mostly, as has been pointed out, because the script is much better.

What i like more than SWTOR is my character not speaking. I know to many this is a turn of, which is fine, but when my PC starts speaking without my permission, it just go "NO. What are you talking about? STFU, that's not what i want to say" image

its hard to understand at first SW    -   Secret world   or Star wars :)

but Star wars always been for  fans so they are talking about  even breakfast as if will be Epic battle. a bit to much drama :)

Of course, it's a matter of taste.

Even within SWTOR, I found the Empire stories and cutscenes so much better than the Republic ones. And within Empire, I personally found the voice acting of the Bounty Hunter to be the best, though I liked all the stories.

I won't want to say whether I find TSW better than SWTOR because I had a lot of fun with SWTOR for the first couple of weeks, just as I'm having tremendous fun with TSW these last couple of days. However, TSW seems more adult. It is fresh and different again, on another  level than SWTOR was.

They are both different. Time will tell.

The truth be told, I'm not a fan of storymode. However, the writing for TSW beta was the best I've ever experienced in a MMO. It's very sharp and spirited. And frankly the only MMO story that is worthy of a mini-movie.

It's a matter of personal taste of course.

I actually disliked some of the "class voices" in SWTOR so much that I didn't want to play the class ! I have a mental image of my game character, and if the provided voice doesn't fit, that is quite jarring.

Another point is that my SWTOR character felt like they had their own personality, and I was just controlling them. It wasn't "me", it was some trooper or sith that I was watching and steering through the game world. I felt like an observer, and that to me is totally immersion breaking.

Well, The Secret World has the advantage of not having to do a cut-scene followed by...

    1) I'd love to be your doormat!

    2) Where is the money?

    3) I have sand in my jockstrap.

...for each and every single quest they have.

In the TSW, if you are being asked to sit through a cut-scene, something interesting, relevant or important is going to be revealed.

It is done better in TSW, it is not in your face all the time.

i dont know , I ignoring VA & cutscenes in both games,

for sure devs are done great work but it is waste of time & resources for MMO

  • Entris38Entris38 Member UncommonPosts: 401

I like the vo's in both. I do find TSW's more appealing, though, I may be basing it on art style.

  • SiugSiug Member UncommonPosts: 1,257

Definitely much better and mature than SWTOR. While I kind of liked my Sith Warrior's journey I found VO's of side quests annoying quite often. And Republic stories were pure garbage imho. Just could not play that Captain America they forced me to. Then again SWTOR was aimed for everybody from age 3 - 90 and it was meant to be The WoW killer.

  • ZinzanZinzan Member UncommonPosts: 1,351

Didn't like it in SWTOR, don't like it in TSW.

I hate being forced down a certain path or to perform a certain action with limited options, thats what these VO cutscenes do. There is no place for them in mmorpg's imo, it ruins the immersion. As someone earlier mentioned, mmorpg's a lot of the fun is down to interpretation and imagination, these cut scenes don't add anything, they detract from the game and rip me away me from my character. I hate having to sit and watch MY character do and say things that i have little or no control over.

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

I'm focused on the NPC telling thier story during cutscenes...not my mute and expressionless character.  To each their own, but in my opinion, you are doing it wrong.

Cutscenes have no place in an MMO.They imop are just a gimmick to try and show some kind of innovation and for the lazy players that never read quest text. Those same players skip cutscenes too. Some small cutscenes showing world events are ok but not all the time. Its like books turned into movies,I can count on one hand the movies that are better than the book i have read of it.

I did find SWToR's cut scenes to be superior. They added some depth to the game and some 'ownership' of your character. I think I would have been happy had they stuck to the main character story line for cut scenes though. I think the game would have been more enjoyable had they put all the money and effort into the 'other' cut scenes into the rest of the game. The cut scenes with their choices were obviously the main focus of the game...it made the rest of the game very drab in comparison. I'm not so sure the rest of the game would have been enjoyable with the cut scenes taken out. TSW reached a balance with it. It adds some atmosphere, but the rest of the game has to stand on its own, without the cut scenes, and I think it does.

So, SWToR's cut scenes are 'better', but TSW's cut scenes are better integrated into the game, and TSW's game without any cut scenes is superior to SWToR's game without any cut scenes.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

It's funny because a huge portion of SWTOR's outrageous budget went towards voice acting, yet Funcom was able to achieve the same quality voice acting (if not better) on a much smaller budget.

Allllll that wasted dosh Bioware could have put towards improving gameplay and tech...  image
