Actually, this is a fear that I had about TSW. My fear was not that combat sucks but rather that people would percieve it that way if they did not grasp how to build a skill set. I can see it getting a lot harder for folks when they leave Kingsmouth for the Savage Coast if they have not figured out how to create synergy in your 14 skills of 7 active and 7 passive.
Instead of thinking that perhaps some experimenting, and mix a matching skills or looking for ones that compliment the others is what they should do, they assume it is the game and not them.
The combat seems simple enough but it is pretty easy to create a build that does not work all that well. If you are struggling with that look to the pre-built decks as a guide. For instance, keep in mind you can only have one elite skill slotted active and passives, but by the time you are in Savage coast for a little while you will probably have two active and two passive elites.
Of course, not everyone is going to like it becuase it is a bit different and that is OK too but based on your commentary I think you fall in the area of not quite getting a good build going.
Not funny, Op just mentioned he is going back to LOTR mmo, he didnt even compare the games. I assume OP has already invested time into LOTR so why not play that game again if TSW didn't fit him. Probably would have been better for the OP not to mention an "FYI" because lots of people would use that to discredit the OP... cheap move and sad.
Because his main complaint is the combat so to go on about that and then go to another game like LoTR considering the lackluster combat that game has it is rather silly. Not a real stretch to bring that up considering the gist of the OP. Nothing cheap about it. Really good point actually.
Besides this combat bitching is mostly bandwagoneers at this point anyways.

Seems like you've flip flopped rather suddenly, because you certainly seemed happy with the game then - and live is a pretty significant improvement over beta.
Nothing strange. The person had a good time at first but once he got the hang of the game and became more familiar with what it has to offer, he realized that it's not to his liking.
I couldn't agree more. Obviously there are issues with the game or there wouldn't be so many people flaming the OP and trying to defend TSW. The only good way to see a 'bad' thread buried is to not post in it.
That makes no sense.
We're talking about taste and opinion. The OP states nothing more than an opinion (i.e. doesn't like the combat), and as such, does not identify a factual "issue".
Those that disagree, which has been the majority in this thread, have a different opinion - they enjoy the combat in the game. It makes sense for them to disagree.
Personally, I think the combat in TSW is very well done, and a lot of fun. It has more depth in solo and group synergies than most other games I've seen.
I dont see a point comparting the combat to other games. Whatever it is, i like the combat.
Im not sure why most people hate the combat, ive played all the other games compared to as better combat, and for tab target combat its pretty fun.
I use a spammy resource builder, two resource users, a "cast time" nuke, a buff and a aoe +CC on a cooldowna nd a spammy aoe.
So basically im not staring at cooldowns and im actually watching my character and the fight, which is nice for a change, but also theres enough beyond the spamming of 3 skills, which ive seen people describe the combat as.
I mean i guess if you want to make it like that...3 skill spam and leave the rest of your hotbar empty it does give you that options...
Oh im close to done with blue mountain, thats the 3rd map...the combat SUCKED in kingsmouth compared to what i have access to now...since now i do have options...and it the situation looks like i need more AOE/CC/direct DPS whatever i have the option to swap a few skills....working on some other wepons too to bife me range leech and barrier/heals for when i need it (not quite there yet)
Combat in this game is as good or bad as you make it....if the combat sucks your doin it wrong.
I really feel most of these combat sucks threads are people streching to find something to gripe about, people who only played a breif time in beta, or people who were unable to adapt to a game that doesnt hold your hand with classes and predefined routes...eventhough it offers those premade decks....

I actually found that combat gets quite a bit better beyond Kingsmouth.
Personally, i rather hate the whole "global cooldown" concept, so i'm never going to LOVE the combat in any game that uses it. (Hated it in Rift, hated in TOR, hate in TSW). That being said, as far as GCD combat goes, TSW has grown on me.
One thing that was initially very disappointing ot me was having only 7 active abilities. Coming from games where I usually have 20-30 combat abilities, I felt it was way too simplistic.
Having run through the Inferno dungeon a bunch of times, I'm startinig to change my mind a little. Considering how mobile the combat is, I'm having a hard time keeping up with even 7 actives while running, turning, positioning, etc. This isn't very evident early on in KM when you canjust stand in one place and fight, but once you start doing the more serious content and mobility becomes a MUST, the combat system begins to make a lot more sense.
Anyhow.. just my opinion. It's not he end-all of combat, but it's fairly fun the further in you go.

I can understand where he's coming from, assuming he didn't build an astrocious deck and expect it to work. Deck building is fun, but for my liking the combat relays too much on passive skills instead of active skills which you need to activate in specific cirmustances. I approve the fact you have to move, kite in a fight and I like that they have a dodge, but it's not enough.
Active skills focus would make the combat feel more dynamic and force players to read the present combat situations and react with different skills accordingly. Same if the dodge ability could be used more often. Right now many active skills are the same as their counter-parts and all is different between is a state they apply or exploit for extra damage. Furthermore 7 active skills just doesn't feel enough at all if you would like to gather the most dynamic skills in one deck.
TL;DR
The combat in TSW needs more movement, dodging and more situational active skills instead of relaying on passive connections between active skills. It would make it feel more involving, dynamic and fun.
I have wanted to love this game, but I can't. It's just tedious. The combat is a horrible button mash fest. Everything else is stellar. The atmosphere is perfect, the quests are fine. But the combat is atrocious. AOC was sooo much better in this area. I've gone back to lotro and won't be renewing my sub. I appreciate TSW and what it's trying to be, but I don't have the time or patience for it. Instead of getting better, things just get worse as you progress. Crafting is a pain in the ass instead of something to look forward to. It seems like tedium and repetition are the games replacement for leveling up due to lack of content. Otherwise, a small area takes forever due to really slow advancement and the intention of keeping players in one area as long as possible. On top of that, there is very little reference to secret societies and all that. TOTALLY dissappointed...
I can not really answer about TSW it's combat system but I can comment on combat in MMORPG's overall, to be honost I have never played a MMORPG where I felt the combat in it was great meaning that combat mechanics for it. I do have some great combat experiances with other MMORPG's but that was due how I and others played either solo or grouped.
And that's the thing about MMORPG's I never get into a MMORPG for it's combat, for my combat fix I happely play multi or singleplayer games thats where I personaly can find satisfying combat, a mmorrpg for me should obviously have combat but it's all the other feature's and gameplay it offers that makes me want to play a MMORPG.
Overall most MMORPG combat is onpair with singleplayer RPG combat, makes me wonder if those who often complain about MMORPG's combat played singleplayer RPG's, cause as I said there isn't that much difference between combat seen in most MMORPG's in my personal opinion.
I actually found that combat gets quite a bit better beyond Kingsmouth.

You know the thing i hate most about GCD is that it renders a lot of skills worthless, since your then wasting cooldown ona skill that might not preform as well as another with the same exact cooldown. Also it seems to make combat needlessly slow..combat has the same pace across all roles which mabey shouldnt be the case.
Also...get a mouse with extra keys on it...the combat is very fun when your able to do it moblie via putting a builder and your spenders on the mouse...really makes using the active dodge/buffs and other low use skills more viable if your not constanly pressing the builder/spenders with the same hand your running with ect.
Its going to be very hard to return to standard mmorpg combat where i have to stand still while casting...it still feels unnatural to be able to move while a skill has a cast time bar filling up (not sure if cast time is the correct word since a lot of gun skill will have a bar that fills up before it nukes ect)
Maybe your slow or just don't speak english let me paraphrase that... I play every game accept this crappy one.... got that?
I know I shouldn't feed the trolls, but I really just can't resist this one.
If you're going to insult someone on their reading comprehension or skill in usage of the English language, it really helps to have a mastery of the language yourself. First off, it should be "Maybe you're slow". It's the contraction of you and are that you were looking for there, not the posessive form... Secondly, you play every game EXCEPT this one. You in fact do not accept it which is the very reason you play every game except it (something which in of itself I find hard to believe as there are a hell of a lot of games out there, and if you play ALL of them, that must be what you're doing 24/7).
In other words, thanks for playing, try again.
Here comes the grammar police, difference is that I can comprahend even if I can't speak the language.

Ill put together couple more combat videos as I build a few more sets up. But honestly people who are hating on the combat really haven't given it a good chance or just hate tab target based combat. Building up and putting together sets for differn't situations is a lot of fun but I suppose some would prefer the linear hand holding skill progression most games give you these days

Actually it could be argued that combat becomes more diverse after Kingsmouth due to having more potential for different skills/synergies.
I also wish people would stop trying to force their opinion of the combat as fact. I guess they just don't know how to explain themselves properly. Let me help: "The combat is terrible and poorly designed" Translation: "I dont like how the combat works in this game and I find it uninteresting" ahhhh...much better.
To be honest I find the overall combat situation in this game alot more fun than SWTOR and Rift for many reasons:
-The mobs are generally more of a threat and not as static
-The "only 7 skills" allow for a more refined and efficient way of using skills as opposed to having 4 skillbars blocking your screen
-The combat is overall certainly more active when compared to the 2 aformentioned games and is more in line with that of GW2 in many ways
I could go on and on but I think I made my point which is that I dont see the combat as the biggest selling point, but it certainly is far from "terrible" and that it would be easier to take peoples' posts seriously if they provided constructive criticizm and implied some subjectivity in their rants on the combat as opposed to making themselves look like asses and touting their individual opinions as objective truths...please...

I agree that building decks and looking for good combos is a lot of fun but that's not really combat it's preparing for combat.
Once you hit that first attack combat for me becomes AOE slow, instant 5 resource builder, skicky grenade, builder, builder, builder, builder, builder, AR spender, pistol spender, builder, builder, builder, builder, builder, AR spender, pistol spender, repeat.
That's 6 abilities. My seventh is a AR only builder that heals me for when I need it.
Now I do move abilities in and out of those slots but the basic role of each ability stays the same.

Kind of hard for them to do really since it appears most of those harping about this didn't really play much if at all and are simply regurgitating the same shit they've seen others use. Really I think most of those that complain about this and did actually play are really complaining about the lacking animations. I mean they've improved but they're still nothing spectacular which for those that it matters to I suppose that would be a downer and make combat appear more tedious than normal. Really the combat is the same old thing in this game. Not sure how someone could feel this strongly about the combat in this game yet think it is great in other mmos.

Thinking about it I can say that action bars have been on the decline for years now and TSW with it's 7 item bar is just the latest in a long run of decreasing active abilities. At this rate we will have MMO's with only a Right and Left mouse buttons in no time.
I'm sure they have found that smaller numbers of actions appeals to a larger audience but it does simplify combat for sure no matter how complex you make the act of picking those 7 active abilities is. It's just one of many reasons that MMO's are becoming SPG's.

It's difficult to say, if we go out of the realm of MMO's for a moment you have games like DOTA 2 that only have 4 active abilities for most characters and although the basic concept of the game is easy to pick up the skill cap on it is hugely challenging.
I don't think having lots of abilities is bad, neither is having a select few you can use at a time, but we need more games doing away with generally useless ones, I had some abilities in WoW that I actually never used once in 4 years of playing.
I'll admit that my initial impressions of some of the combat animations were kinda meh... But so far everything about the game has been a breath of fresh air for me. I like the skill system, and how the skills synergize with each other. Heck, within just a couple hours I was running around with my active and passive bar mostly full with abilities from two different weapons that just clicked with how I saw my character playing out. Not too shabby.
I think I've given up on the notion that every new mmo has to have cutting edge graphics, combat, years of content and enaging pvp in order to be good, granted, I think Funcom actually hit most of those on the head.
Guess I'll leave it at that for now, and will see some of you in game tonight after I get home from work.

It could be that this similarity to GW2 ( mobility, dodge of course NOT to the degree of GW2 combat ), points out how much better TSW combat would be if they took it few steps further in direction of dynamic combat. TSW combat could shine with more dodging and more varied active skills instead of passives synergies deciding the combat outcome from behind the scenes.

I agree. I'm finding combat thoughroughly enjoyable with some fun surprises: When I first made it to Blue Mountain, it was 2:00 AM game time... nice and dark and crrepy. I decided to follow the arrows made out of stones that someone had left and ended up in a dark area with charging Wendingos and bear traps all over the ground... that was a lot of fun.
I find the different mob attacks and defenses interesting with a lot more variety than you usually see early in most MMOs.
Hey but then I'm not claiming to be a "pro" who has seen and done it all. I'm just someone who plays for fun...thankfully.

I never used many of my abilities on a regular basis in those other games or they were situational. Which it still is for me pending on whether I'm grouping and the role I'm playing or if I'm soloing. Use different builds for all and tend to use all of my seven abilities rather frequently. Same as it was in those other games with a set number I used on a regular basis. Only difference is now I have to choose what I can have available.
Pretty much the same old shit just presented differently so some think it is complex (which it isn't) or overly simplified (which it isn't either).

but then I can set this up in numerous combos if I please and not always have that same rotation.. I find other MMOs that I have access to 30 plus abilities i end up using a set 5-10 75% of the time anyway. At least here I can mix it up a lot more often, not to mention change roles completely depending on if im grouping or not.

Actually, this is a fear that I had about TSW. My fear was not that combat sucks but rather that people would percieve it that way if they did not grasp how to build a skill set.

You don't like TSW so you've gone back to LOTRO? seriously??? You're welcome to it! lol

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
