The thing with EVE is that people do what they want, and you really can't stop them. Thats why safety is a main issue for most players. Saying your never safe is...somewhat true. Most people's instincts develop thinking that the world is always cruel, therefore its natural to think that you're never safe. Oh and whoever said to leave 1.0 immediatly is highly wrong. Do the tutorials, gain some knowledge, find some friendlies. EVE wont hold you hand through the rest, which is part of the reason why its such a great game.
I was the one that said to leave 1.0. It might not be the best strategy all of the time but at that time it was the way I escaped the griefers.
I was fooled by a can flipper once, I told him I was filing a petition, he seemed quite upset about that. Based on my experience he had no reason to be because the CCP representative that responded to my petition essentially told me to piss off. Perhaps on a different day or with a different CCP rep the response would have been different?
No doubt my learning curve would have been much easier to follow had I been able to do the tutorials.
Ever seen what happens when someone in an interceptor going at high speed rams one of the Rookie ships?
Ever finish killing the ship you were sent to kill, only to have someone swoop in and steal the item you need?
How many people are looking at those graphs and reading them from left to right, when they display, data from right to left?
Good point. I did the same my first visit to eve-offline. It's not very obvious until you glance at the All-time one. Then you realize you can mouse-over and get dates!
Though to some degree I will side with the OP, but even I have to step in and call BS on some of this persons claims. First off CCP has zero tolerance policy toward messing with new players(called rookies) - zero tolerance - first infraction can get your account a two week ban. They have a list of systems that are considered "new player" or "rookie systems" and if you are caught "flipping-cans" or "baiting" new players into PvP - ban.
Here is a list of the rookie areas and this includes the "Sisters of EVE" tutorial mission system. Rookie Systems List.
There have been many onging discussions between CCP and the players discussing this very topic. CCP has been extremely straight forward and vocal about vets messing with newer players. Here is just one of the discussions about rookie pilots that stretched on for 32 pages over a few days on the forums. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=100978
I may not agree with everything CCP does and I may have my gripes about EVE, but please do not come to the forum boards and spew BS. People that play the game and know the game read these forums as well and though EVE is a very unforgiving game, it is not as bad as the OP makes it sound like it is.
If CCP is so against new player ganking then why do they allow hulkameggon (or something like that). I would belive this if they restricted pvp in 1.0 systems to voluntary but that would violoate their whole philosophy. No. CCP knows what is happening and is fine with it. I had a fun time with Eve but will never go back. I am exactly the type of player that CCP does not want - a care bear.
Sorry that I am re-iterating views that have annoyed CCP (and the hard-core players) for many years. I would be a long term subscriber to Eve. Just give me absolute protection in 1.0 space. Nope. Pissing in the wind. So, like the wind, I am gone. (Yes, good riddance to you too!)
If you are flying a mining barge like a retriever, or an exhumer, like a Hulk, you are not a rookie pilot any longer. It takes more than a month of training to get into a retriever and longer to get into a hulk.
I have to disagree, the hulk is one thing but in EVE terms you are still a newbie if you have just gotten your Retriever and they are now targeting the T1 barges as well.
Of course people are targeting t1 barges. They cost millions and the mods are worth millions. What some of you want is zero risk factor. You want to play EVE and avoid PvP. I am sorry, but that is not going to happen. When you start mining, you are in direct competition with every other miner in the game. When you put ORE's and minerals up on the market you are competing with others for that market - and that is PvP. EVE revolves around the building and destruction of things. When things go boom, it requires ore and minerals to replace it. If there are 10's of thousands of miners putting ore on the market it lowers the price of the ore and that effects other miners trying to make money. So people are naturally going to fight over resources and the markets on which those resources are sold. That is EVE. It has always been that way. EVE will never be a game where you have zero risk. If it ever did allow for players to do something that effects the game Universe that is EVE by taking zero risk the game of EVE would die over night.
EVE is not for everyone. EVE is a niche game. EVE is an unforgiving bitch that seduces you with dreams of good game play, but if you ever turn your back on her she'll cut your throat, gauge out your eyes and leave your cold dead carcass floating in the void of the black and not think twice about it.
So from a statement that you can still be a new player in a Retty and that T1 barges now are targeted you come to the conclusion that I want a risk free mmorpg? Impressive logic. A Retriever cost 8 million that is not even pocket change to older players but might be a great deal to the guy who just bought his shiny new barge.
People always pull up the argument that mining and the market is pvp in order to defend their actions when blowing up someone. That is a shit argument. Why? Because if I miss a sale because another guy was cheaper my ore does not go Boom! It's still there and I have a chance to make a sale later on.

That is bullshit mumbo jumbo from people who want to think that a game somehow matters and that their epen somehow sticks when they log out.
I think you are taking EVE too seriously. It is just a game. If you cannot deal with losing something - then EVE is not the game for you. Oh, and you forgot to add the cost of the strip miners and crystals, and mods, and rigs that go on that 8 mil retriever. All said and done...you're looking at a 20mil+. Tasty prize for a new player that is looking to turn pirate.
Or CCP losing subs steadly, im sure there is a bottom line some where. Or not ?
EVE hasn't been losing subs. Last fanfest they said they were gaining subs. Of all the MMO's EVE has steadily gained subs while others steadily lose subs.
I think the Goonies are determand to try and change this and much more, time will tell.
People like TEST and the GOONS are one of the things that actually bring people into the game. They offer nullsec fun to total noobs the instant they join. Whilst the alternative is grinding away in carebear land until some scummy small corp will take them in at a certain SP level.
Plus, screw the internet samurai mentality, games are supposed to be fun.

I'm not sure if it's what you'd call a perfectly elastic collision or not but essentially your Rookie ship leaves that spot at a high rate of speed (1,000+ m/s). A speed high enough that it takes an inconvenient distance to stop.

No, most new-semi new players get by with strip I which is about 3 million (for two). Maybe cargo expanders but no one is putting rigs on a Retriever. Say about 12 depending on where you are but my point is that it is a sizeable sum to a new player.
I am not taking EVE seriously at all, but gankers are. There was for example a manifesto that had to have taken hours to put togheter on the forums. It went on and on about how miners are worthless parasites and how they must be driven out of the game. And the author was not alone in his views.
These persons are:
a) Pathetic bullies
or
b) Doing it to troll
In either case they are taking it too seriously considering the time and effort they put into it.
As I said earlier, all the talk about how EVE is ruthless and darwinist is just BS. It's a videogame with slightly harsher penalties than your average mmorpg, yet people seem to think that playing it somehow makes them badasses in RL too, it doesn't.
I have yet to loose a barge after 6 months of mining because I stay vigilant but I am not blind to what's going on. Just because I haven't been blown up does not mean I think all is well and good with the game mechanics or the state of the game as a whole.
One day Goons will be too sucessful and actually manage to drive people out. Maybe not a whole lot but enough that it actually shows in their profit. What will CCP do then? Will they intervene after years of Goon ass kissing. I think they will be unable to, they have effectively painted themselves into a corner.
If you decide you want to try Eve, the instant you launch from the station, immediately get the hell out of the 1.0 security system. Once you've done that, find a player corporation, join, and let them teach you. That's how I survived. I still fell for the occassional gate camp and such but was able to progress much farther than I otherwise would have. There are some really great groups of folks if you can find them.
NEVER, EVER assume at ANY time in ANY place that you are safe, safety is purely an illusion in Eve. There are players that will gladly sacrifice a ship worth many time what yours is just to get a "kill mail". I say "sacrifice" because after they've killed you the local police will kill them.
The graphics, animations, variety, sounds, etc. are all excellent. The game has very few bugs compared to others I've played and those that are present are not as "game breaking" as some I've run into in other games.
What follows is not an attack on anyone, except perhaps CCP. What follows is essentially, "here's what I saw, maybe you'll see it differently".
(I put that first because I know the trolls will pounce the instant I post)
When I first read about Eve I thought it sounded really cool, reminded me of the old game, Starflight. Exploring uncharted space, meeting alien species, discovering ancient civilizations and technology, etc.
A bunch of us from SWG went to Eve, we were instantly set upon by gankers and greifers. You can't run the tutorial missions because more experienced players that want to ruin your day are constantly harrassing you. Those experienced players know all the tutorial missions, they know Eve has a large learning curve, and they will use it against you every step of the way. Don't bother filing a complaint because you won't like the response you get from CCP. Many existing players see new players as nothing but intruders and CCP apparently agrees with them. I made the mistake of filing a complaint the one time I fell for one of the tricks called "can-flipping". I was in a system I was assured was safe from griefers by the moderator in the "Help" channel. The response I got from CCP was actually rude. Of those that moved with me from SWG, I was the only one left after two days. I've never been a PvPer but most of the others were.
The advertisements talk about all the 1000s of star systems and all the stuff you can do. Well forget it, you will never see most of it. You will spend the vast majority of your time trying not to fall victim to other players whose only goal is to ruin your day.
Think about every jerk, griefer, cheater, and crook you ever heard of that go kicked or banned from another game. You know they didn't quit playing games, they are all thriving in Eve.
After a year I finally gave up trying to play Eve the way I wanted to. If you are willing to play to the least common denominator then you'll do fine. I just don't have it in my make up to spend all my time either dreaming up new ways to screw people over or continually battling others trying to screw me over. Believe me, there are some folks that are HIGHLY talented at ruining your day.
Just realize that very few of the challenges you will face are from Eve itself, they will be from other players.
EVE won't change the game for new players. i have some respect for these guys even though new players might not have a chance unless they stick it out. it's a brutal game from what i hear and thats kind of cool to be honest. I wish more games had that bar to entry. you gotta be tough and not a pussy casual to survive there.
I don't play Eve but i'm glad they won't let QQers change their game like so many i have played were softys show up force devs to dumb it down for them.

Actually the only hulks I lost were to rats due to me falling asleep at the keyboard .
My purpose is to let new players know that most of the challenges and difficulties they will face have absolutely nothing to do with Eve but they have everything to do with the way people play eve. That when they read about eve the PvP should be considered above all else.
The original reason for my post still stands. I stuck it out for fourteen months. Why? Because I'm stubborn. Why'd I quit? Because I wasn't have any damn fun.

Eve is brutal. I can some up my entire point with, "people should know it's brutal before they start". I did lots of reading of guides and such but somehow I never got the idea of what it was really like to play Eve.
I much more interested in the info you have in your sig.

The game is not for you period
Is there some reason you felt it necessary to restate what I already plainly said? Does you saying it that way make me a littler person in your eyes?
Does your view upon the game reflects on others as well?if yes then my answer to your question is also yes.
I didn't and won't attack any individuals. What you said, was a dismissal of me personally and anything I might have to say. I played Eve for fourteen months and I was as successful as I cared to be.
I'm not Anti-Eve, I'm not Anti-Eve Players. I just think new players should go in with a better understanding than I did. When I read up on Eve I concentrated on the game itself, the mechanics.
Someone mentioned a PvE server. I'd gladly play on a PvE server. However, CCP believes that the best way to maintain the economy is to have as much destruction as possible. If a ship gets destroyed that removes resources from the universe. This strategy can be seen in the explanation for the wardec system changes. They said that the wardec system wasn't used as much as it should be, that they wanted to remove the dec-shield "exploit" and to make having a mercenary corporation a viable option.
Someone else mentioned a manifesto that outlined how miners were scum and should all be killed (not quoting). I've heard that from time to time. I've always thought that the best solution was to give them what they want . Show them what happens to the prices of their ships when there aren't any miners making replacements. But that would require the builders to become as organized as the destroyers which isn't likely to happen. I think most builders tend to be more independent, some of them to the extreme. I know a guy that is determined to build his own Titan by the end of 2012 all by himself. For the vast majority that's not a possibility, but this guy will succeed. Though I was never that ambitious I do tend to work alone or in small groups because of my weird work schedule.

Sorry, I rambled...
Eve pve server.. all ships would cost 0.01 ISK by now, and then you wouldn't have anything to do because it would be useless. Sounds fun.
Wish I could have jumped into this thread earlier. I think its really all about having the right expectations and frame of mind going into EvE. I used to be the biggest carebear on the planet, I avoided EvE for the very reasons you listed even though I am a huge Sci Fi fan.
Well I finally got sick and bored to tears with the theme-park and got my mindset right, and gave it a go.
I can honestly say, that my initial days were nothing like you described. I did find a very noob freindly corp, full of great people and that definitley helped with the experience as well.
can honestly say that I would be against a PVE server, and I am also against the calls to make EVE "safer" why ?
have I been converted to a griefer .... no
I simply have found the thrill and excitment of never being safe, of living all in the same non-instanced game world, on having the freedom to do what I wish, while also having to be flexible enough to deal with the freedom of others.
wihtout that, the game would not have the same holding power, or thrill.
The other really odd thing I have noticed, is that despite this being a "griefer enabled" game, the community is actually one of the more mature & helpful that I have found. Sure you have the @$$hats in any game, but if you have experienced any of the nonsense from PvPers in theme-park games or worse yet xbox /shudder then the EVE online crowd will seem like saints to you.
Sure they may blow you up or scam you, but I have had some really good convo wiht , and gotten advice from the guy that just blew me out of space on more than one occasion.
Its a Harsh universe to be sure, but once you come to terms with it, you may find that you would have it no other way.
I can't imagine anything more boring than playing on an EVE PvE only server. EVE's PvE reaches the dizzy heights of "meh" with Incursions, but that's as good as it gets. To give mining and industry any kind of worthwhile role they'd basically have to rewrite the game to make rats at least as dangerous as players are now. And while they're at it, create rats that are actually midly entertaining to kill.
In short, if you want a PvE only game, play a game designed around PvE. Coming to EVE and complaining about all the PvP all over the place is like going to a steakhouse and complaining about how it offends your vegetarian sensibilities.
That said your OP wildly exaggerates the difficulties new players face, and I flat out don't believe that you aren't - at the very least - leaving out a few small details from your story.
I knew as soon as I saw the OP that it would be very controversial. I have to say though that I do agree. I just cancelled my EVE sub today because of the same issues.
I love the idea of the sandbox and even the idea of the open pvp. BUT... there has to be a least SOME safe locations for newbs. EVE states plainly that NO place is safe. I found this to be very true. When I first started I noticed the can-fliping containers right outside the start station. Lucky for me, I had read about it and didn't fall for it.
What irked me the most (to the point I finally quit) is the gankers who are already neg. sec. and have so much isk that they don't care if they lose a ship and so they attack the newbs anywhere.
In my first month of playing I lost 2 catalysts, 1 Triston, and a Vexor. All fully loaded. Thats about 60-80 mil ISK lost to griefers who just didn't care that they got shot up too.
For an established player 80mil is chump change. For a new player, that will set you back a long time.
If they ever made the game so that you couldn't attack players in high-sec unless they looted your can or something like that, then I would join back up.
I personally compare it to the real world (the ultimate sandbox). How many people want to live in countries with no rule of law... pretty much nobody. Only the jerks and A-holes of the world who love to kill innocent and take advantage of poor like it. This is EVE. Its a 3rd world country with no rule of law and you are a baby left on the street with no parents. If you can somehow manage to not be killed by the time you are an adult then you will be strong enough that you too can go kill babies.
Once I realized that this was all I had to look forward to, I quit.
So no EVE is not the game for me. I played for several months and gave it a chance. If all it has to offer for my hard work is ganking newbs, then I will not enjoy it.
This is just my experience (And the experience of the majority). If you love eve and this didn't bother you... good for you. It bothers most though and I think the OP is fair in warning people that may spend real money to find that out.

I'm curious. What happens?
How many people are looking at those graphs and reading them from left to right, when they display, data from right to left?
Good point. I did the same my first visit to eve-offline. It's not very obvious until you glance at the All-time one. Then you realize you can mouse-over and get dates!
A speed high enough that it takes an inconvenient distance to stop.
warp out then warp back in. easy....
A farting picture, well it is in keeping with the level of intelligence demonstrated by your continuous proposal for an EVE pve server I guess.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
The game is not for you period
EVE won't change the game for new players. i have some respect for these guys even though new players might not have a chance unless they stick it out. it's a brutal game from what i hear and thats kind of cool to be honest. I wish more games had that bar to entry. you gotta be tough and not a pussy casual to survive there.
I don't play Eve but i'm glad they won't let QQers change their game like so many i have played were softys show up force devs to dumb it down for them.
Is there some reason you felt it necessary to restate what I already plainly said? Does you saying it that way make me a littler person in your eyes?
Actually the only hulks I lost were to rats due to me falling asleep at the keyboard .
My purpose is to let new players know that most of the challenges and difficulties they will face have absolutely nothing to do with Eve but they have everything to do with the way people play eve. That when they read about eve the PvP should be considered above all else.
The original reason for my post still stands. I stuck it out for fourteen months. Why? Because I'm stubborn. Why'd I quit? Because I wasn't have any damn fun.
The game is not for you! Period!
Does your view upon the game reflects on others as well?if yes then my answer to your question is also yes.
Eve is brutal. I can some up my entire point with, "people should know it's brutal before they start". I did lots of reading of guides and such but somehow I never got the idea of what it was really like to play Eve.
I much more interested in the info you have in your sig.
