Ive finally got a beta key for the 20th BWE,time to see if the game will even hit close to the mark.
A large amount of people have already played it and decided that it does live up to the hype.
Some people were excited and ended up not liking it, others weren't excited and got excited.
Some people, like yourself, aren't going to let themselves be convinced one way or another.
Big deal, not everyone likes the same thing.
When so many people have played it already and love it, why bother claiming it won't live up to the hype when it already has? Just say you're not interested and be done with it, or give the beta key to someone whose mind is open to being changed.
If I wasnt interested then why would I bother obtaining a beta key?
The amount of hype the game has,it wont live up to it,its plain and simple..especially when there are people out their already saying they didnt like it.If youre using hype to measure this game then there shouldnt be a single person that dislikes it.
I dont let myself get baited by the hype anymore,it burned too many times

Fair enough--you're interested but don't think it will live up to the hype. Most people who say "it won't live up to the hype" absolutely hate it, so my apologies for the assumption. And you're right! Too much hype just burns people, but...
Yes, of course there are people who don't like it. It's impossible for anything to exist that everyone likes...of course the same holds true for videogames. I love the game, but I can definitely see why it would not appeal to everyone. There are plenty of people who hyped themselves up without really considering whether or not the advertised gameplay mechanics were for them, or once they got in they simply found themselves to not enjoy it.
But the vast majority of people who did play the beta weekends, still love the game if not even more (myself being one of those people, and all but one of my friends coming out of the beta the same). That makes the "it won't live up to the hype" statement factually false, because it already has for the majority of its players.
I find the hype to be a big turnoff about some games. I don't mind dev driven hype or the inteli-fans who mull over designs and details. But when it comes to the hysterical fans driven into a manic frenzy that would make a TV evangelist blush, that's where I draw the line.
I stop and ask myself... do I really want to be on the same server as these people? I think not.
From the OP's list, WAR and SWTOR were the worst that I was around for.
I'm glad to see GW2 get exposure. I have a lot of respect for ArenaNet because of their starting up as an underdog and producing the solid game that is GW1. I just hope the hype doesn't evolve into SWTOR styled rampant fanboyism. That would spoil the game for me.

not the greatest game i've ever played, but fun. im getting it becuase it's buy-to-play. no game warrants a fee these days.
I feel like I've gotten quite a bit of gameplay from 10 bucks a month for Darkfall. I've continued to pay for EVE for a while now and I've never felt like it didn't warrant a fee. I even have the option to pay with in-game currency, but I guess when you have a decent job it's easier to work for less than an hour to pay a monthly sub than it is to try to farm the equivalent in-game within the same time-frame.

You don't think it has already?
Having said that, I don't see why fanboys anywhere would keep you from enjoying a game. That seems kind of silly to me.
I have a huge problem with threads like this, because they use circumstation reasoning to come to all the wrong conclusions.
'hype' is not a good reason to like or dislike a game. It's just not. Hype, by it's very nature, is generally meaningless, and often misleading. You also have 'hype' like as portrayed on these forums, which basically come to mean 'anything that is popular', thus severely distorting the very definition of the word into meaninglessness.
I see over and over this mentallity of 'these other X games failed to live up to the hype, so this one will too'. Know why that's wrong? Because just think about it for a minute. Have there been any games that live up to the hype? There should be a glaringly obvious one, and that would be World of Warcraft. The fact that games since WoW haven't all lived up to the hype is irrelevant in & of itself. Each games reason for being lackluster is different than the next, and many of them have at least some of that because they tried to beat Blizzard @ their own game.
Again, those don't really apply to GW2, because it's an entirely different situation now, in 2012, than it has been for the past decade. Games are moving away from the WoW-themepark, WoW is on the decline. People basically have to compete w/ magical pandas, and really.. how difficult is that.
Use your brain, come up w/ a legitimate reason for liking or disliking a game before you proclaim it to the world.
- If you like it because you have friends that like the same stuff as you, and they said it's good. That's a legitimate reason.
- If you played the game, and decided it's not for you. That's a legitimate reason.
- If you aren't interested in any of the features the game has to offer. That's a legitimate reason.
- If you really like what you've seen before, and want to check it out. That's a legitimate reason.
Basing your interests off of how many times something comes up in google, is not a good reason. That is how people get severely dissapointed by things (because they never had realistic expectations to begin with), or they miss out on awesome opportunities (because they are trying to avoid something just because it's popular).
Play it, don't play it, doesn't really matter to me. However, i'd suggest making sure you actually have a good reason for you're decisions before you make them. Tends to lead to better things in life.

You do realize that of all the MMO's the OP has listed, that they were all pretty well received by critics?
Simply being a good game - even great, is not enough to live up the hype. If guild wars 2 is to be the next 'big thing' it will have to attract one hell of an audience, and then do what no MMO since WOW... SUSTAIN IT.
Legendary Bioware, with publishing giant EA, with the almighty STAR WARS license couldn't do it.
GW2, while it sounds like it will be a great game, will not live up to this ridiculous level of hype. I would heed the words of another poster, people, if you want to enjoy the game more, start managing your expecations. So many are setting yourselves up for dissapointment and then the cynicism that follows it.
I find the hype to be a big turnoff about some games. I don't mind dev driven hype or the inteli-fans who mull over designs and details. But when it comes to the hysterical fans driven into a manic frenzy that would make a TV evangelist blush, that's where I draw the line.

so your reason for not playing a game is because fanboy hype? How exactly does that affect you in game or any where else. If you hate a game that is fine, but your reason just seem stupid. If you have a problem with other people excitement affecting you, maybe you should stick to SP games or my little pony online or don't go online.
I for one AM getting this game because of the insane hype around it. Why are you getting Guild Wars 2?
Dragons! I was fighting deathwing when I saw the first video of GW2 (Tequatl the sunless) a month later I quit WoW and started to follow gw2
you quit a game to follow another u cant even play yet?
interesting.
When a game is boring why pay for it?
not sure, then why were u subbed in the first place if the games boring?
Games get stale over time, I don't think anyone buys a game and thinks I hope this game sucks
I had fun in WoW for a year maybe. then when I realized that the only purpose on the game was grind raid after raid I wasn't having much fun. After I killed deathwing I saw a video of gw2 dragons and look again at deathwing, then canceled my sub and play other stuff (HoN, SC2, BF3, etc) until gw2 comes out. WoW isn't that bad but i'm not the guy who spent 5 years repeating the exact same simple strategy...
It's been hyped for like 4 years, it's not just another train lols. Of course things get hyped upon release and are played more alot when they are brand new anyways, thats just common sense.
Now that's not a bad thing. But I see it everywhere on the internet that this game has been gaining some insane hype for a long time. We saw it with Age of Conan with its 800,000 preorders. We saw it with Warhammer with it's 1.2 million units shipped. Aion also had a million sales in North America. These games get overhyped and everyone's gotta play them.
2003: SWG and FFXI
2004: WoW
2005: Guild Wars
2006: ........
2007: Vanguard: Saga of Heros and Lord of The Rings Online
2008: Age of Conan and Warhammer Online
2009: Aion: Tower of Eternity
2010: Final Fantasy XIV
2011: Rift and SW:TOR
2012: Guild Wars 2
Again, not a bad thing. All I'm saying is that Guild Wars 2 is next on the table. Now that TSW has been released, the next BIG HUGE MMO is going to be Guild Wars 2. In 2011 we saw th release of SW:TOR and everyone was hyped about that game.
This game, millions of preorders and dozens of websites and chatter going on on the internet about this game.
I for one AM getting this game because of the insane hype around it. Why are you getting Guild Wars 2?
I prepurchased GW2 basically because I loved GW1 and knew that Anet was going to put out a very good product.
I was wrong.
From what I've seen so far, Anet is putting out an OUTSTANDING product. This isn't hype in terms of "excitement based on conjecture". This is excitement because they are already delivering a top notch product and fulfilling all of their claims.
I think this is one of the few games that will deliver on it's promise, and I think the sales numbers will only go up for quite a while because of the quality of the product.
This isn't fanboyism, it's purely based on the absolute fun I've had while playing the game during the BWE's. I think many, many people will find the game just as fun as I have.
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???
I still plan to play it, but once I started seeing videos from the Staff here at MMORPG.com playing it... I don't know, it lost a lot of luster for me.

u are missing the point i think . aoc ,warhammer were subscription based games . this is B2P . so even if people buy its boxes out of hype .the mission will be accomplished by arenanet.i am in two minds at the moment .either to pre purchase guild wars 2 or pay for for 3 months wow subscription and let it launch for three -four months and than make decision
I still plan to play it, but once I started seeing videos from the Staff here at MMORPG.com playing it... I don't know, it lost a lot of luster for me.
Looks like all the other fantasy games to me.
I don't care how good the steam is , it is never the same as actually being in the game yourself

I've been planning to get GW2 since it was announced. If ANet had continued to make new content for GW1 I'd still be buying that. While the hype has featured things I am interested in, it has not been any kind of factor in that decision.
