Purchasing because it will be a decent game. However after playing the beta weekends it just had too many similarities to world of warcraft to see it become my new main MMO.
By similar it's a brightly coloured fantasy setting with sword and magic. It has several races that are basically variations on the same races fantasy always has. The classes are variations of the same classes I've always played. The combat although interesting in its action style, was overall exhausting to play after a while (killing a rabbit took too much skill /joke). Even the dynamic events weren't interesting enough, they were again a variation on a standard MMO quest, although brilliantly delivered it didn't stop me feeling "I've kill alot of centaurs in my time"
The personal story was very childish (maybe game aimed at a younger potential audience).
All these things are really attributed to the fact that I've played fantasy MMOs and RPGs of similar nature far too long, and the lack of interesting mature storyline made the rest of the game seem to much of "been here done this way too many times"
Now that's not a bad thing. But I see it everywhere on the internet that this game has been gaining some insane hype for a long time. We saw it with Age of Conan with its 800,000 preorders. We saw it with Warhammer with it's 1.2 million units shipped. Aion also had a million sales in North America. These games get overhyped and everyone's gotta play them.
...
I for one AM getting this game because of the insane hype around it. Why are you getting Guild Wars 2?
For a while now, i've been hyping myself throughout my own analysis of different games, GW2 is no different in this regard.
Somehow, i've been waiting for GW2 since i got GW back in summer of 2005 when i wished the game to be less instanced and a bit more open world. Regardless of that little peeve, i've been playing the series on and off up to this day and it ranks as one of my favorites online games.
I really enjoy(ed) my trips throughout the series. The general gameplay mechanics, beautiful world/music design and above all, the most satisfying, fun and serious PvP i've had on an online RPG. Anet commitment to the franchise has been very obvious all these years and GW2 is no exception.
Many of the GW2 features publiced by Anet came out to be true so far and the outcome has been very pleasent. The fact they kept true to their word on keeping GW2 with the same B2P payment model, only reassures me on another game to be kept installed long after i purchased it, just like GW.
I'd say, alot of the current hype circulating around the gaming community has been generated throughout hands-on experiences and word of mouth. Let's hope for a smooth launch.
5 years of waiting is quite sometime. I'll admit that at first I wasn't to get this game. I heard about it back in 2009 and just just gonna pass. But 3 years later, the reason why I'm going to buy it.
Mainly because I know that it'll last for a long time. I can leave if I need to and when I come back there will be a stable population to play with. Though it's not the case with previous MMOs.

Yes, Guild Wars was hyped up in 2005. The sales prove it. Between 2005 and 2006 the game sold over a million copies. Between 2005 and 2012 the series has sold over 7 million copies.
Guild Wars 2 is up there with WoW on the F2P. Not Pay to play, but free to play. It is the WoW of Free to Play.
I think this kind of proves why Guild Wars doesnt deserve to be on the list of hyped games. At least not as far as being overhyped. This pointed out that the intital sales around launch were 1 million and then explained how the game continued to sell copies at the same rate for the next several years. The developers themselves had only a modest goal of 250k players before launch. That isnt overhyped. That was a game that delivered. That was a game that sustained and grew its playerbase over the course of years.
And that was just Arenanet's first out of the gate attempt to make a low budget quality title. They now have far more resources at thier disposal and the experience from creating GW1 to make an even better game. They have learned from past mistakes (not withstanding Guild Wars being a well desighned game) and i think from the BWE's, have put alot of the lessons learned to great effect in GW2.
People need to actually look at Arenanet for what it has accomplished and how it has behaved. I know its expected that all mmo companies are all a bunch of liars but i really do feel that Arenanet has done every reasonable thing possible to set themselves apart from those other mmo developers. Even if you hated Guild Wars, you should consider how the dev's treated its players.
I for one AM getting this game because of the insane hype around it. Why are you getting Guild Wars 2?
That's the wrong reason to get any game, that's the reason games sell at first and then die. So if lots of people are doing something (in this case buying a game) you have to tag along and do the same?
I'm getting Guild Wars 2 because I've been following the game since 2007 and Anet delivered on all their promises. I'm getting Guild Wars 2 because I haven't had more fun playing an MMO than during the BWEs. I'm getting Guild Wars 2 because I like what I've seen in the game so far.

Are you not implying that hype is bad eventhough you say it isn't?
And imho, buying a game just based on hype must be the single worst reason ever for buying, it's kind of like being a sheep that desperately wants to follow the herd. As in real life, basing a decision on personal experience and your own research will atleast somewhat get you better prepared.... good or bad.
I bought GW2 not because of any hype. The time when hype made me buy games is long gone (if it ever existed).
I bought it because I absolutely loved what I have seen in beta. For the first time since 2004, I'm REALLY excited about a MMORPG release. The other times were UO, AC1 and WoW. Of course, I tried/played most other MMOs released, but those few were above the lot. GW2 will be the fourth.

I've never been this excited for an MMO launch ever. And the good thing is that it's based on my own experience with the game, the honest and detailed information Anet has been providing etc.
That's the difference here, the hype is generated by the fanbase based on actual game information and has exploded since the media test event where all media where unanismously positive and more so after the BWE's started due to positive experience with the game by actual players. The hype we're used to seeing is based on the dev studio, the IP, CGI trailers, vague information and empty promises, no actual gameplay nor much concrete information; which is quite different.
GW2 lives up to everything anet says it is, but more importantly to many of us that have played the game via the weekend events this game far exceeds anets own definition..
This game lives up to the hype because the hype isnt hype at all, its for real..
I'm not getting GW2 because it will be just a clone of any crap MMO which has been released already. And now it is just overhyped.

I was hyped for every MMO I ever purchased. If I weren't I would not have bought it. Some were great, some were average and some were crap. I don't see hype as a bad thing and don't understand why so many make such a great fuss about hype.
Overall, I think SW:TOR was more anticipated, but specifically on mmorpg.com, the hype for GW2 is off the charts. Will this game finally satiate the appetites of gamers here at mmorpg.com or will the backlash be legendary?
As a SW:TOR fan, I'll just advise you all on the importance of managing your expectations.

GW2 have however been the top game I have been looking forward too the last 5 years (followed by "Class 4" and "WoDO").
Guild Wars was cool, but not cool enough to dethrown WoW back then. GW was the poor mans mmo (stated by many back then)
I remember all the WoW fans vs GW fans flame posts, pages upon pages.
Now GW2 has a chance once again, but will the newer mmo be able compete against it's old rival. Will it still be considered the poor mans mmo as it was stated many years ago or is it time for a comeback?

Lets say GW2 might live up to her hype, what ive seen so far is good enough.
Much better then all those other fail launched mmo from recent years.
WIll it fail for some people ? yes it will
Will it be an epic adventure for other ? yes it will
Also how wrong can you go for a buy to play model ?
I remember in those other mmo's i needed to pay the box 60euro + 13 euro sub to activate.
I can buy GW2 for 50 euro and play it for months wihout any extra cash trown at it.
But money aint the problem tbh, its the fun you need to have to play a game and GW2 provides that the best from any mmo i played in the past 12 years.

When people have actually tried the game, and then expressed opinions on those experiences, it is no longer hype.
Not a hard concept to grasp.

Sides, the music so far has been just 'out of the ballpark' stuff.

Pre-purchased, went into BWE and went totally crazy about it.

Playing GW2..
Except that for GW2, that hype is well deserved
(starting from the fact that ANet did give what they promised during all the development process)
edit : I bought the game not because of the hype, but because of the dev blogs, seeing how serious, dedicated and striving for originality they were.

I´ve tried the game in the 2 BWE & 2 stress tests and i just loved what i saw!
Like the Lore, the races, the art design & most important the game design that´s why i will be playing it.
The Hype? well.... i didn´t expect Jesus coming....just a great & fun game... and it delivers!
