When it comes to quests, i like having different situation to spice it up. IMO, it's way more fun that stoping the 2nd generic mob invasion. Not to meantion that's already in Rift.

I do because picking apples, watering plants and feeding cows have nothing to do with the war against the dragons.

Well, without food the heroes who fight the dragons wouldn't survive.

Couldn't they just eat the dragons?

Don't know, do you think they would find lava, ice and bones delicious?

The real question is, what kind of army is this that can be fed on apples! Pretty sinister if you ask me.

I dont see how people can critize more options, unless what they are saying is, you can only either pickup apples or kill dragons, at which point I agree its pretty lacking, but bring on more options, farming, picking apples, fishing, all adds to immersion.

If a game attempts to add something realistic he better do it right otherwise it breaks the suspension of disbelief, like fishing in Skyrim, if I am gonna go and click to a river and click fish to pick them up its better not be there cause its just shit, I hope they added a bunch of other stuff that makes sense besides just picking up apples/fruit, if you can pickup fruit then there should be other logical stuff that needs to be done to contribute to the war effort or whatever.

Put only "combat" style quests/events (kill 20 boars, bring me 10 rat rails, etc...), and people will complain about variety.

Try to add some different quests, people will complain it's not "heroic" enough.

Fact: SOME people are never happy - best thing for developers is to simply ignore those ;-)

Interesting.   My father-in-law was drafted during WWII (at 16) because the draft board decided that his family only need one son to help his father raise turkeys and chickens for the war effort.   Those were processed into C-Rations.  For the war effort.

A restaurant that constantly tinkers with its recipes is one doomed for failure.    You simply cannot design any dish to appeal to all pallets.   What you can do is offer a reasonable selection to hit the majority of your potential customer base and make sure those dishes are prepared to the highest possible standards.

Which is what GW2 seems to be doing.   Which is why I think this game will be very successful.

Nothing wrong with quests like this as long as it fits and makes sense.

GW2: "Hey, I need help picking these apples in time for the party tonight!" This is fine.

WoW: "Hey, in order to be able to kill these water elementals youll need to be able to breathe underwater. So, go stick your hands in that poo to find the digested berries that will allow you to doit"...sick, but makes sense.

Tera: "Hey, go gather some hiskabibles, we need them to restore our souls serenity which was damage by the terabibledibles who became too numerous"...what the $%&*!?!

The apple/spider battle..soooo 2005.  We did it in GW1...they couldn't think up anything better than that by 2012????

If I'm not mistaken it's the same family AND the same orchard.  That's kind of cool for lore buffs!

Same family maybe (can't remember the NPC's last name) but different orchard. The one in GW1 is in Ascalon. The one in GW2 is just outside Divinity's Reach.

I wonder how many hours most of the posters here spent criticizing other games for their mundane quest design.

The difference is that most game designers only give you the picking apples quests....throughout the entire game.  In this case, these mundane quests are completely optional.

On top of that, no one here claimed those renown hearts were the greatest thing since sliced bread.  I for one find them a little boring and only have done them if I want a change of pace.  Which, coincidentally, is exactly why they are there.

You can go back to hating on GW2 now.

In 17 levels of GW2, I killed waves of bandits, I killed waves of cenaurs, I escorted lots of  caravans, and I picked lots of berries.  I may or may not have killed a world boss or two.  At least from what I have seen, content variety is not GW2's strongsuite.  I don't think you can say GW2 offers any greater variety of quests than perhaps WoW or SW:TOR.

Secondly, a change of pace is good, but the SW:TOR space minigame was also supposed to be a change of pace, yet people expected full-on freeform space travel.  My point is, if you're going to create content for a change of pace, at least make that change of pace fun and engaging.  If it's a boring mess, I'm going to call you out on it, which is what I'm doing right now.

I can't think of another MMO with any where near the variety of things to do as GW2. Level 17 isn't very far, things really start to open up once you get past the mid teens, but even in the 1-15 experience, there is a lot of variety. Having variety means that there will be some things one likes more than others.

The thing to remember, though, is that not everyone will share your personal judgements of what content is fun and what content is only so-so. This is an all too common theme in MMO criticism, where people assume that if there is some feature they don't like, or some content they view as pointless that everyone else feels the same way. Having such a large variety increases the odds that each person will find elements of the game fun, for them, but no one is expecting every element of a game to be fun for everyone, because we are all very different people.

I personally am not a fan of jumping puzzles, but I appreciate that there are people who will really enjoy doing them, so it doesn't bother me that they are one of the "rewards" for exploring the map. I enjoy the "mundane" tasks in the world, because it does add to my sense of immersion and is a nice change of pace, but I know some people will find the content annoying. That's just the weay it is.

Being in favor of diversity with in a game just increases the odds that you'll find things you enjoy in the game. I really hate when people take such a self centered view that they can't appreciate that other people want different things from a game than you do and catering to a wider variety of players is a good thing.

Perhaps the problem for Mr Super is there isn't a game guide out yet for GW2 ? I mean in his defense the poor lad got stuck doing  the same DE's over 5 and 6 times ....I know this is a big step from playing WoW but don't feel butt hurt or left behind just leave the box ...Step into the future it's 2012

Whoa whoa whoa! Somehow people got their wires crossed... I'm loving the full on change of pace things thrown in! To be able to slow down and smell the apple pie baking is a great thing imo, and I see that as counter to the arguments of people that had been complaining about the more mundane appearing DEs in GW2.

Just want that to be clear.
