After being a bit over half as popular as SWTOR 2 months ago or so. GW2 has seen a great increase in popularity during the last BWEs and it only keeps increasing. Congratulations to GW2 and its fans.
SWTOR was "the most popular game of the year on MMORPG" last year before its release too.
I'll wait until 3months post-release to see how GW2 actually holds up .
anyone who will wait 3 months after release probably isn't interested in the game.
I think as the BWEs became available and players got their hands on the game the GW2 community became privy to the fact that anet was going to deliver on what they had promised plus some and imho this community since then has done a great job of battling trolls and naysayers based on the known facts...
Part of the praise can go to the moderators here who were almost always quick to nip troll threads in the bud and send the obvious trolls on a 24 hours or more ban holiday. I just hope they will keep on the good job once the game is released

Even though I have talked my entire guild fo 30-some people to try GW2 this last weekend with all those keys being released, and if the majority enjoy it I'll buy it and play with them. As usual, I'm more interested in the social aspect than hardcore gameplay.
HOWEVER, i'm most certainly not going to claim the game is pure win or pure fail prior to it actually being released.

^ wouldn't "told you so" always be worthy of derision regardless of game/circumstance?

you're buying a game not life insurance.

It's called showing the developers where the game industry wants to go. If every person keeps getting tricked into massive box-sales each release, and then the game dies 3-6months down the line, then that sends bad messages (or sometimes the wrong ones) to the bigwigs of the industry.
Look at SWTOR, the box sales alone freaked out most industry leaders into the wrong direction, and now months later with the "Super Giant IP, could never fail, game of the century" MMO SWTOR tanking hard industry analysts are now suddenly saying the industry is at a stand-still if SWTOR couldn't do it.
It's more complex, and deeper, than you seem to think it is. Sure, it's nothing life or death like life insurance, but it most certainly is more involved than simply buying every $60 box game hoping for something to change now isn't it?

GW2 is going to be a great game but yall act like it just won a important election or something.
Welcome on a forum of a website named "mmorpg.com". What a surprise, here we talk about... MMORPGs, and not elections. So yes, when a potentially good game is about to be released, we talk about it, since in the setting of this site and forum, it's as important as an election would be on a political website.
;-)

Popularity is meaningless? I'm sure it's not to the game developers and the overall community of the game lol you guys, gotta think a little.

As a fan it's good to see it reach the most popular spot, well deserved too IMHO, I'm pleased for the developers they must be getting a good feeling about seeing that. As a gamer I don't really care if it's number one or number ten as long as there's a high enough population and I'm enjoying it, that's all that matters to me.

The point, is that popularity IS meaningless online. It matters AFTER release for retention. Popularity prior to release is nothing more than a gauge for server stress at launch. SWTOR was EONS more popular than SWTOR (despite how much I also protested), and we see how that played out like the almost timeless games before it failing since 2004.
GW2 hype train is generating unrealistic expectations and "popularity". It means NOTHING until post-release.
It's sad too considering Bioware aren't the ones hyping this up to the extremes, but the players themselves this go around.

Seems like my comment flew right over your head. lol.
When you compare apples and oranges, expect some people to highlight how innapropriate and out of context your comparison was.
lol.
How was he comparing apples and oranges? The hype is really generating some unrealistic popularity that can't be trusted, like the games before it who have failed horribly also generated. That was his point, and it really did seem to go over your head .
