Did anyone NOT expect GW2 to be the most popular game on MMORPG in 2012 ?
Congratulations to all the enthusiastic fans, after all, they are the ones who make it possible.
*cough* Er, wasn't SW:TOR the most popular game on MMORPG in 2011 ?
Let's just pray that GW2 doesn't dive like SWTOR did. I checked the MMO releases till next year and there is really nothing on that list that looks interesting at all.
If nothing else, beta weekends just get me more and more interested about the game (even tho I've been following it for years)... Not something I can say for SWTOR. After the "freeforall" beta on SWTOR I was kinda let down and wasn't so excited about the game so much afterwards.
On the other hand, beta weekends in GW2 make me wanna play the game even more than I did before the bwe. Every time xD.
That gotta count for something, atleast in my case.
same here during the beta for swtor I found myself very bored at times and extreme case of deja vu through the whole thing and almost fell asleep while fighting on the second day of it. GW2 each beta I only want to play more and I hardly have tried a fraction of the game.. really shows how much better this game was put together than a game like swtor imho
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
I hate the term WoW killer, as I think only Blizzard can kill WoW, but I do think GW2 is the first MMO to be able to reach WoWs success. Much like many tried to copy WoWs success, I can foresee many companies trying to copy GW2 model. I personally think this can only be good for MMOers.

yes some individuals seem to be comparing them on the basis that they were both popular before release. the gameplay elements that you bring up are much more important as far as what is relevant to compare.
it is for gameplay reasons that GW2 will succeed or fail in the long term. sales or pre-launch excitement really aren't an indicator in and of themselves on how well the game will do post-launch as far as player retention goes.
it is simply a ridiculous argument that "SWTOR sold a lot and flopped therefore games that sell a lot will flop."

nvm
I didn't even know there was such statistic. TSW is very high on that list.
