WvW is DAoC's RvR without realm points/ranks

Ex-daocers do you think this will actually be fun? Would you like RvR if it was only about taking keeps/relics?

Yep, it's all about having fun without being able to become overpowered with ranks or gear.

I think it's enough for me. It's close to DAOC early years. Before Trials of Atlantis and the New Frontiers the games  RvR was epic. I get the same feeling from GW2 WvsWvsW. Now if they'd make a Darkness Falls dungeons I'd be set. image

Yes as long as there is no TOA type junk, reading this just made we want to buy GW2.

you get rewards for WvWvW there is also a ranking system for the server you are on so yuo are matched up with other higher ranked servers after the two weeks

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. But there is no personal progression. You get the rewards even if you don't even step once into WvW.

Yes, you can even level only from World vs World if you really want.

personal progression is tied to PVE in this case which in turn benefits you in WvWvW. You still got structured PVP that offers personal progression for just PVP.

It's boring. I'm sorry but it is. And I love large scale siege type PvP. Nobody is going to care where their server is ranked. Instead they should focus on promoting guild rivalries. But that's a wash after two weeks. There's no substance behind the enemy. Just a server name and color. It's really shallow and bland. Very disappointed in WvW.

It's as close to DAoC RvR as we've gotten since 2001. But it's still not there yet. If this game wants to become the next king of PvP, it needs to fix its CC issues, add some sort of Darkness Falls dungeon, add more siege weapons, get to work on naval combat, make more substantial relics (maybe) and add in SOME form of PvP progression. Whether the realm points actually do anything or not, they need to be there, to have fun letting people see your rank.

Can you see enemy names when you click them/they kill you?

    A few opinions/facts...

There IS a darkness falls type dungeon in WvWvW.  It has 3 entrances, 1 each in the sub castles of Eternal Battlegrounds.  Hold all three castles and no other side can enter the dungeon.  Its a HUGE dungeon by the way with multiple, controllable traps so you can hit the other teams with them.  It is VERY jump/puzzle oriented and has a large chest at the top that you can open if you can get there.   What its missing though is a reason to hold the top and not allow others to get there.  would be great if there was a big world changing benefit for being the king of the top of that dungeon.

As for personal reward.  there are quite a few perks gained by conquering, similar to relic bonuses in DAOC.  but it would be nice if there was a personal rank (if only to brag about) that allowed you to see progress towards time spent in WvWvW.

    No, but the guilds there.

I can't see why they couldn't add a ranking by your name.

Also there is progression, there's gear you can get by playing WvW, just the tokens drop really slowly, it'd take FOREVER to get a full set.

Not a chance, the PvP and WvW is lame in GW2 compared to DAoC...

Can't see names. only their guild/server.

I think realm ranks with title/cosmetic rewards could actually work. But at the moment it seems like a glorified southshore vs tarren mill and people will get sick of it after 1-2 months.

That's not the same as Darkness Falls. That's more like the Labyrinthe or passage of torment or whatever they added in like 2006.

Darkness Falls needs to be a PvE zone, primarily, and you enter from the PVE zones, its just... there may be others in there.

So you can't build up your name... you can earn any points towards rank or progression... what were they thinking?

DAOC didn't have realm abilities right at release either, but it was still fun enough that most players stuck with it until long after realm abilities were added. Will GW 2 be fun for many years if they never add anything like realm abilities? No it won't. But that's something to discuss a few months after release. At least at first WvW should be good enough without realm abilities to keep us happy.

We already have a dungeon Darkness Falls style. You don't have naval combat per se, but you have an amazing underwater fighting system.

You will build your name not through your enemies, but within your own server, since enmities swap from time to time (to avoid unbalanced servers locked on forever). No relics, no ranks, thanks.

Also, the game has not even been released yet. You want 8 years of content and upgrades from the get go, in a game without subscriptions? What about a melted cheese and a root beer to go with that?

Be realistic, and see the strengths that are already in place. The game allows for a lot of upgrades and expansions.

The only reason to play this game is population.

I'm hoping it resembles the RvR experience from DAoC (which I doubt due to no 8v8 roaming), but without RRs and alternate advancement skills as a reward it seems like a very hollow replica. The only bonus for winning is a buff for your realm. I don't really see the point in that.

so suprised how many can't see "fun" as a reasonable reason to pvp.. i played fps games for years for no other reason but that.  Played street fighter, tekken, and so many others just for the fact it was fun and I wanted to get better. If the design of combat and maps are fun to me that's all the incentive I need

Exactly, there is no darkness falls dungeon currently in GW2.

I am being realistic. The budget and team that made GW2 is about 20 times larger than the one that worked on DAoC. Something like ranks and abilities should have been planned from the start, at least have the groundwork for them. And not being able to see your enemy's name is just a dumb decision no matter which way you cut it. You should be able to build a reputation with everyone, not just your guild mates.

And underwater combat is not the same as naval combat. I don't expect naval combat at release but it's a logical progression to work in.

And yes, this game REALLY needs a Darkness Falls zone.

And some sort of relic is also imperative, a big stretch goal for everyone to push towards.

  • drakaenadrakaena Member UncommonPosts: 506
It's not that fun. It's meh. I mean... It's not terrible but imo its the least fun of the GW2 options. Which is surprising since originally I thought WvW would be the main attraction for me.

    No.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
