why do you do daily quest in games?

DrunkWolfDrunkWolf Member RarePosts: 1,701

my first experience with this was in Tera and right away i found it very wrong. If im paying monthly for a game why on earth should part of the content be on a timer? if i want to do these so called daily quest 500 times in a row one day i should be able to right? im paying for the damn game....

why do people stand for this? honestly it is what made me quit the game i would never pay for somthing that limets me on things i can and cant do because of some timer.

do others feel this way? or do most think daily quest are a good thing?

Daily quests make you come back and play. This same concept is used through the various facebook apps about farming. Do stuff; wait a while, come back and do it again. It's a cycle of the skinner box theory that applies to persistant games such as MMO's or socials.

It's also a way to control content. There's a huge gap for someone that plays for 2 hours, and someone that plays 12 hours. Daily's make it so even the two hour player can be somewhat "caught up" to the 12 hour.

Personally I'm okay with daily quests. I repeat the same tasks every day without thinking about it. I like GW2's daily. It's not entirelly specific and everyone, even at level 1, can do it. Ocassionaly you even complete it without thinking about it.

Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
    Playing - PS2, AoW, GW2

Daily quests was introduced as a different way to get money instead of having to grind mobs, and gave you a non combat reward at the end. Nowadays its all about getting bunch of rewards, since its rare that you need money in games

No. I think your rant is pretty dumb too.

There are plenty of things to complain about daily quests...the fact they are offered "daily" isn't one of them....lol

Faction reputation grinds. Unlocking items/crafting recipes or even some content after reaching certain levels of reputatiuon with the related faction.

why isnt the daily part a problem? if i want a item shouldnt i be able to go out in the world and get it? why should i have to do one quest a day for a month to get this item? im paying for the game i shouldnt be limeted on what i can or cant do. shouldnt the limeting on content be left to levels and skill of the game?

I loved the bombing dailies back when i was playing wow tbc. And the "remember the pattern" game. They were fun.

Yes, And i dont do daily quests.

Only exception to this is tsw missions, I don't feel they fit the daily quest criteria as they are more of "able to do you favourite missions again"

Oh, so let's say that you are playing WoW and are an active Raider. Your guild does hard mode and is one of the top guilds on your server.

Everyone is expected to have their gear properly gemmed and enchanted.

Unless you have a certain crafting profession, the only way to enchant your shoulders is to gain reputation with a certain faction in order to buy the necessary enchant once you reach high enough standing with them.

The only way to increase your reputation with them is to do the daily quests offered from that faction. It'll take a couple weeks to reach the necessary reputation.

Do you skip those dailies, and gimp yourself during the raids. Letting the rest of your guild carry you because you are too busy PvPing instead of working on your character in order to improve it? Everyone else did the rep grind. What makes you so special?

There are plenty of items 'out in the world' for you to get.  There are others that are only obtainable by earning trust with a certain group ('rep').  You would have a point if the only shoulders or weapon or pants or whatever was not available in any other circumstance -- but they are.  Their not the same, but there are alternatives.  You having 1000x more playtime than another person already gives you a substantial advantage on them.  However, this is one category where the advantage levels out ever so slightly (not completely).

You'll also find that no rep gear is equal to what is obtainable from a raid.  So your 'skilled' player still has the advantage, even there.

As for the 'paying for the game' part, everyone pays for the game.  Seeing it mentioned in a thread is typically a red herring.  I'll counter by saying 'They pay for the game, why shouldn't they be allowed to earn some relatively current gear at the same time as everyone else?'.

Is 100 attack power really gona make all that difference?
Besides, almost anything can be bought for the right price.

I don't do dailies. If they prove to be fun, it'll annoy me they have an arbitrary timer on them. If they prove to be necessary, it'll annoy me they have an arbitrary timer on them. I just avoid them altogether.

You can't buy them unless you get the rep.

And although the gain from one guy's enchanted shoulders may not be significant, it does add up when 25 players have the enchant. If the other 24 players have them, why shouldn't the lazy guy get them? And if the lazy guy doesn't have to get it, why did the other 24 have to?

Well .. many MMO activities are on timers. Raid, dungeon runs (or at least some rewards), and also quests.

i don't think people are really that upset and would quit en mass if the limits are not eliminated.

Sometimes I just like logging in for a half hour and feel like I made progress.  It depends on the game and quality of teh gear.  I couldn't stand SWTOR dailies, but I didn't really mind many of the WOW dailies for faction gear.

    Ditto.

I'm really not a fan of repeating content, not in a daily, not in a dungeon.  One and done is my motto.  image

yeah, that's my most recent experience with it. My first was LOTRO.

In any event, my answer is "I don't".

can't stand the idea of daily quests as it makes me feel like I'm puncign a time card. I just don't do them.

    I dont.

I been playing MMOs since 1996 and they are the worst "feature" I seen so far. When did game devs become so lazy and cynical?

Of course I take them if I do other stuff that will complete them while I am at it, but I wont move an extra finger for them.

I really hate 2 things in MMOs, this is one of them, the other is faction grind.

  • AlBQuirkyAlBQuirky Member EpicPosts: 7,432

I don't really care about them. If I see a quest, I do it. Maybe do it again later on if it was fun. Maybe jump in and help someone else doing it. This, to me, is the very definition of "grind." I don't even pay attention to the "daily progress". I definitely do not work towards it :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I do them if I perceive a purpose for doing them. It isn't my favorite thing to do however.

A purpose to me could be:

    Rep grind

    Achievements

    Gear

    Mounts

    Mini-pets

    Crafting recipes

    Item enhancements

    Buffs

(A lot of these are usually related to the Rep Grind)

I don't "refuse" to do them in the hope that my action will somehow sway the developers to stop creating repeatable quests.

I tend to avoid dailies.  Sure, you might say - looking at my sig, I'm not an achieve guy anyway - so it should be obvious that I wouldn't.  However, dailies go beyond that for me.  They're pseudo content and turn the game into work.  I'd rather have actual content and a job that pays me rather than a job I pay...

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?
