None of those game offer any, er, roll forward for items or xp. Some did offer 2 times xp for the entire server.

agree - having a sub wont help

Ive experienced the same issue in other sub games

Never heard anything of same magnitude in WOW or LOTRO where due to server outage players lost progression and were told 'hey we can't help you..ok thanks and bye'.

I have had that happen to me in both those games and in EQ2. All three offered bonus experience and/or drops afterwards, but didnt reissue items, gold or experience lost in the crash. Since GW2 doesnt have a sub, there really is no need to compensate players, its just lost time.

For the record I lost about 20% xp and a few waypoints in the GW2 crash.

Yes time is not worth anything...

They shouldn't get a free pass because there is no sub...give me a break.  I think we will all live but saying this is no big deal because there is no sub is laughable.

    ^ agreed.

Not true about no need to compensate players.  Reason.  If players get pissed off they'll leave the game, will not by future packs and in the end, loss of revenue to the company.  Satisifed customers stay in game, regardless of sub or not, they need to make money somehow to stay afloat and pisssing off customers and not compensating them, 'in some way' is not smart for business.

What are they going to do? Give everyone who owns the game gems? There are already very few items of worth to buy in the cash shop. It was a few hours, its no worse than forgetting to save on a single player RPG.

That's why I wrote 'in some way', meaning something is better then nothing.  Nothing can give the impression that you don't care about your customer base.  Bad impression if you ask me.   But I agree with you, the 'some way' is a tough call, especially with gems.   And keep in mind, it's not the same as forgetting to save on a single player RPG, because in that case, IT WAS MY FAULT.  Server crash on an MMO, is NOT MY FAULT.  Why should I have to be inconvienced by it?   Like others have said, it's not game breaking, I'm just talking about the difference between good service and bad.  Nothing more.

i guess once again the answer is: its a game without a sub, so its ok. besides that, you play for fun and not for the items. who cares for a crapy legendary.

i hope some of those gw2 players move to wow so they pass their loot to the rest of us. i think they will play just for the fun, as they say

It only rolled back about 45 mins to an hour the OP is exaggerating just a little bit I assume.

I can't say the exact amount of time it rolled back on Tarnished Coast, but I lost levels 54, 55 and 56. I was crafting though, and doing nothing but discovery, so I was gaining exp fairly fast. Oddly, I had been logged out for 45 minutes when I read about the crash on here, then I logged on to find the loss of data. I dont really care about the exp loss, the money sucks to lose because I dont have much to begin with in the game, but I could even take that in stride. I just hope that they are taking this kind of thing extremely seriously and taking measures to move towards a better plan for this sort of thing in the future.

How much more spin can this get? B2P is the future of the genre. There is no need for subs. $15/mo is a rip off and is not needed.

Then the excuses come out when something goes wrong and the player gets screwed we are told we have to understand because there is no sub?

Either B2P can maintain AAA quality service or it can't. Heralding B2P as the savior of the revenue models in MMOs and then turning around and saying you get what you pay for isn't going to prove anything.

    Gotta love these situational standards.

Things went too well for 10 pages i think? don't like it?. You think only because you lost 45 mins of progression it is same for everyone else? some also lost 30 mins and others nothing. And then there are players who lost 3 to 4 and upto 6 hours of progression.

Did i tell you you are lying on purpose to make this problem look small? no right? then why are you underplaying my problem by calling it exaggeration?

I lost 15 minutes of gameplay. It definitely wasn't hours and hors. Played 6 hours yesterday and only thing I lost was some money and time.

curious as to which AAA MMO had great support during launch month when they are flooded with new players and launch  issues.. I can't remember any.. I have had hacked accounts.. lost items.. ect.. on almost every single AAA MMO i have played in..

    More spin.
    Examples, specifics, details, links please.

Now, let me tell you my experience.

A couple years ago, I got to work and noticed my personal email had a warning that I'd been accessed from China. Yep, They didn't hack my game, they hacked my email. Maybe I was key-logged. I'll never know I guess, but I was hacked. Blame me if you want, I'll accept the guilt.

Anyway, the hackers used it to steal my WoW account. When I emailed Blizzard, they IMMEDIATELY locked my account. Knocked the hackers right offline in mid hack. Blizzard followed up later that day and explained they were in the process of breaking down my items into gold. Most of my tradeable valuables were moved to my bank alt along with all the gold from the vendored items.

Not only did Blizzard fully restore my lost items before I even got home from work that day, they told me I could keep the gold.

So, yeah, I'm sticking with sub.

So what you are saying is that no MMO to date has had  solid support  at launch and GW2 follows this trend of having terrible support on launch  for their service?  You aren't saying that because no MMO to date has had solid support at launch, that it is ok for GW2 to be lacking support because no one else did better?

what I'm saying is every MMO has issues at launch with a huge influx of people there is no reasonable way you could have enough staff to accomodate everything that is going on at the launch of any MMO. Rift i had my account hacked 3 times.. wow 4 times.. EQ2 2 times.. SWG twice.. each one I had issues with server crashes and rollbacks and such.. it's part of the biz you get used to it.. some people are way overreacting.. but guess that's just what forums are for.

The no sub fee is not an excuse. At the same time I have experienced rollbacks in every AAA mmorpg with a sub fee I have ever played as well.

So from the sound of it I take it that the server itself does regular backups, which is the point at which all character data gets saved. Anything not yet saved then is left in some interim state on the server, even after client logging, until that timer goes off. So if the server crashes between the timer or shortly before it, I guess people can lose things done in that time?

Otherwise it's because people are playing on more populated servers and they are overloading it to the point that it's taking almost an hour to backup data from characters, which coupled with live play is crippling and crashing them. In which case Anet either needs to get larger/more stable servers or get less popular.

Might be some other reason, but those feel like the most likely candidates. Either way , sucks to yer asthmar(or loss of data) and hope you still enjoy the game or the next game you intend to play.

EDIT: And Tardcore. That really doesn't look like Aero telling anyone how to think, just what they think of how others think. And Aero thinks some are way overreacting. Point in case I guess.

What a limited memory some players seem to have.

A few servers allegedly get rolled back a few minutes (or so some claim, although i can't confirm this as personally I didn't experience this) and it's the end of the world, B2P sucks and subs is once again the only model that works.

Your beloved WoW has rolled back how many times? I lose count but i fondly remember the massive roll back about 6 months in to correct a dupe exploit, everyone got screwed over for that one and no-one got reimbursed. DAoC was rolled back umpteen times, Rift, Aion, SWG, SWTOR, DDO, LOTRO, DF, MO, PS, AoC, GW, EvE, FE...christ i could go on, i can't think of a single mmorpg that hasn't been rolled back at one time or another for one reason or another and no-one ever gets any of that progress back regardless of the payment model.

For someone claiming others are putting "spin" on this, you really need to consider your own comment as you are doing precisely the same thing, distorting facts and conjecture to suit your own agenda.

I don't agree with people using the excuse that because a game has no subs fee the devs can be let off, because thats not the case, they have a responsibility to their customers equal to any subs based game. But this doesn't excuse or justify your post.

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

This is the question you know they won't answer, but it's indicative of some greater problem, regardless...

    1. Are the servers or is the server tech just "old"?

    2. Did some guy "who works in the game industry" kick a plug? Did one of the hamsters turning the wheels to power the server die? Did someone wire it to a light switch?

    3. Is there internal sabotage/corruption? Are alleged hacking attempts actually accessing/modifying game data? Did they intentionally cut power to stop a security breach?

    [mod edit]

i think you need to think up a better passwords.

i've been playing mmorpg since 1996 and i haven't ever got hacked yet.

pretty much my point on this stuff... it happens to many people and obviously not to many others.. I haven't noticed it much better or worse with any AAA MMO to be honest.. just something that happens.. and for the passwords have always had very strong passwords it's not always just about a strong password.
