Fun is subjective - if you are having fun, you play - if you are not, play something else!
This is why some people love sandbox MMOs, some love WoW-type end-game MMOs, some like open world PvP, some like instanced battleground/Arena type PvP....

Sorry Spock, I usually find your posts well thought out and on the money, even if I don't agree. But this one is not the case.
We all paid for the game. We all played it but only some of us enjoy it, That in no way has anything to do with our right to come here and discuss our experiences good or bad.

You're TOTALLY ignoring his point about the goal being fun and fun being subjective which, I think, is the main thrust of his post.
It's been said here and other forums ad nauseum: GW2 does NOT rely on the gear treadmill/progression that games like WoW do. This is neither good nor bad. Both games find communities that enjoy them. Fun for you (as I believe you stated in another post) is the gear progression and the the reason you play a game. For others, myself included, it is NOT the end all be all and we find it quite unsatisfying.
So we move on. We quit games, like WoW, that rely on the gear/progresion treadmill. You're being disingenous and even a bit hypocritical to 'translate' Spock's post as "if you don't agree with me, leave" because you're actually making very much the same statement.

The point of any game should be to have fun. The problem is that people have different opinions on what fun is. For me GW2 is about experiencing a beautifully rendered world and story and honing my skillsas a player. When I WvW it never occurs to me that I'm not being properly compensated for my efforts. I just want to win for my server.
Once upon a time the players who would stand in storm wind wearing their nice gear was impressive to me. But after achieving some of that myself I realizes that these are not the better players, just those willing to squander a large portion of their life. Gear is NOTHING more than bitmap textures and a value in some games database. It doesn't make you better than everyone else, it just means you have more time on your hands.
However our idea of what is fun differs and that's OK.

Why the need to get something to "Show off" yourself?? People who are good pvper don't need that kind of stuff because people know them, they made a name for themselves by being a top player. People don't recognize them because they have that cool looking armor/weapons, they just know by the name. So what you really what isn't really recognition, its more the gear that will make you stand out from the crowd. Guess what, top pvp players doesn't care about this stuff. Your name is all you need.

OP you are assuming that having better gear makes you a better player or that spending more time to achieve an item or reward makes you a better player. All it makes you is someone with more time, that is all plain and simple. The reason you do not like this game, is because you are not any better then any other player in reality and this game shows that too you. So in turn you dislike the game for showing your true lack of skills. Why do i say this? Because if you were half as good at MMO's as you think you are you would stand out more in an even playing field such as this, with just your pure gaming skills. play something else? not really a hard concept as with any MMO out there.. and if GW2 has bland combat what is great MMO combat in your opinion? also there is a ton of stuff to strive for as shown numerous times in these forums. Just because it doesn't interest you doesn't mean there isn't a LOT of things to strive for. That's like me saying wow has nothing to do at endgame because I dislike raiding and tier based gear progression.

i'm having a blast playing all the classes.. ranger is a ton of fun and loving mesmer is sPVP.. Love exploring the zones the world they put together is just breath taking imho. Love changing up my builds playing with the trait system and the utility skill system to find new and interesting combinations. Really enjoying sPVP with couple of my work friends it's so refreshing not having the gear barrier in sPVP as many games I havep layed in the past have had. Enjoy questing in a game that's about playing with others and not feeling like every man for himself which is the feeling i got in many of the other recent MMO releases. Love that crafting nodes are shared so I don't have to rush to one just to get pissed someone grabbed it before me.. Enjoy the discovery system for crafting new things.. could go on if you wish but just giving couple examples

Why I like the game, because I like being able to play the game without worrying about leveling to be able to do anything productively, there's no gear grind, crafting is cake because you can start gathering mats from the getgo (rather than having to level before you can harvest the next level of ore/wood/organic), and exploring is a big part. In SWG I could get 2 masters in a couple days and then play the game after that, rather than spending a month trying to get to level 50, 60, 80, whatever the F'ing level a game has before you can actually play what the game was advertised as.
But pvp is the #1 reason, structure/tournament pvp (no need to grind for a week or two before you can compete) and world vs world is loads of fun, we spent hours nonstop on the weekend. In old school FPS games I liked how you can install the game, launch it and kill players, rather than most FPS games these days you level up to rank 50 and unlock all these weapons and gadgets to be able to stay at the top of the scoreboard.
Also the low level gear in GW2 doesn't look like garbage like it does in most other games, even as a high level I go and find low level gear and transmute them to my high level gear to keep the looks.
I like the sandbox aspect of the game. If there is an event nearby I can join in... or focus on whatever else I was doing (map completing, harvesting, or story mode). I like that I can jump into PvP or WvWvW any time and enter an immense, complex massive battlefield where strategy actually counts. Here the guilds get recognition by being more skilled, clever, and coordinated-- but taking the high ground, by placing trebuchets correctly, by working as a team they take fortesses and fortify them against massive armies.
I like the story-- which is not just in the story mode-- but found across the world. For example. finding the ruins of cities I saw in GW1 crumbling below the sea. Learning how the races feel about eachother from events and conversations overheard. Exploring gorgeous and remote areas that the "level racers" miss in their hurry to cap and discovering hidden areas, chests, and easter eggs.
I like that this game requires SKILL-- just like most PvP games. I am not standing idly by watching my stats take turns with mob stats. How good is my AGI stat? Oh wait, doesn't matter. If I want to dodge, I have to time it correctly. Or cripple my foe and then kite them. I don't sit there watching my character "dodge" because I have +10 armor of AGI. Chance has nothing to do with it, it depends on skill.
I hear a lot of people complain about the game because it requires SKILL. I hear them whining that jumping puzzles are hard (my platformer friends have no problem with them, and I'm getting decent at them). Or whining because they can't grind and then clobber everyone with their stats. I hear people whining that a well organized team of lower level characters could clobber a big zergy mess of level 80s who have no respect for seige weapons...
It boggles my mind that people complain because the game actually requires skill and say it isn't fun. Really? Is watching turn-based actions determined by chance/odds (statistics) more exciting? Is it more rewarding?
I guess most MMO players DO NOT like games of skill-- they want/love/need to grind.
This game feels like all the best parts of EQ, Elder Scrolls and Tribes Ascend combined.
My favorite WvW moment was holding a camp against 15 other players. I was playing a level 40 Elementalist, no idea what level the Ranger with me was. The two of us bottled up the enemy at a narrow door (someone from their group SHOULD have been guarding it). We dropped every AOE we had on that door and 4 of them died trying to get through. We skirmished 3 more-- killing two, but then the rest of the group zerged us while we were on cooldown. We died, but we had delayed them long enough that our main group showed and crushed them within 30 seconds. We were rezzed and charged off to cause more chaos.

First, the game is NOT perfect. There are many bugs and there are many things working PRECISELY as designed to by ANet that I have 'philosophical' differences with. I say this as a caveat because there are things I'll list that I love that I also have problems with...
WvWvW: Open world, yet consensual PVP
DE's: I enjoyed the concept in Rift and I enjoy it in GW2 (when it's not broken)
Variety of professions/builds. Nearly endless level of customization and nearly every trait choice is valid (or idiotically stupid) depending on the scenario.
Graphic design/Art style. Sorry, but I *never* liked WoW's artwork.
ANet's relationship with the community (Paying attention, BioWare?)
No need for 83 various mods/customizations to make the damn UI usable.
No gearscore
No "need tank and heals then G2G"
Fast travel.
Separate PVE/PVP
No need to compete with ANYONE on your server for kills/harvesting nodes/phat lewts

I agree also, I log on for about 5 minutes each day, try to do WvWvW but realize that It's completely pointless. Attacking SM Is just not fun, It really insn't. I have actually re-subbed back to WoW, MOP Is pretty fun, especially with the world PVP now back In full swing.

You know, ive been asking my self this question since i started playing this game. Whats the point?
There really isnt one. In reality every class is a swiss army knife of the holy trinity. Every class has elements of a healer, of a DPS and of a tank. There is no real purpose to playing this game because of this and other things. I figured i would start with this. SO many people tell me to stop thinking of things in terms of roles, but the reason why roles are important in every kind of game that is strategic is because people like to feel useful. By deluting the holy trinity of Healing/DPS/Tanking in this game, the people at arena.net have made the game feel less cohiesive and reduced the actual strategy involved in the game. There is nothing to hope for as a guardian because while your skills tend towards healing and tanking, you still end up doing the same general stuff as everyone else in PvE.
In Pvp, its like some one put together a really bad version of dota where every single character has only subtle differences. While i agree with the sentament that these roles needed to be changed, I dont agree with how this was done in this game. A perfect example of a working/non-boring healing system was in TERA where you had to get line of sight and then shoot off the heals like in an FPS, its so much better then locking in passive skills to allow for sustain to the entire group and then active ones for a tiny burst. Its like the game designers decided that everything should now be AOE auras and frankly wheres the skill in this? It makes PvE events into zerg fests with no meaning.
As for exploration, what are you exploring in this game? While there are little secret areas that are around in the different zones, the main idea of exploration in this game isnt really exploration. There is no true discovery in this game because everything is laid out for you in a nice neat categorized way. Look at how it would go when you first enter a new zone. You come in, you talk to the scout who spouts some garbage about what each quest hug wants you to do, then you make yoru way towards the quest hub picking up the mineral nodes and check points along the way which show up on your minimap far ahead of time. Everysingle aspect of this game is completely static. Even the dynamic events are static. In most cases, there are people waiting near where the dynamic event starts so they can get in on it every time it starts.
The high level content is even worse. There is none. While WoW raids are far from perfect and infact i favor the old EQ raids and AC quests rather then WoW raids, they are better then having absolutely nothing new. Whats the point in getting lvl 80 when there is so little lvl 80 content? I hit lvl 80 on 2 characters in this game and my guild has a bunch of lvl 80s in it, most of them out right stopped playing the game after a few days into 80 because they lost interest. Why run the same dynamic events over and over and over again? Thats worse then trying to beat the same raid bosses over and over and over again because the dynamic events dont really give you anything worth a damn since items and skills are almost meaningless in this game anyhow.
Personally, I think vinilla wow was the last true MMO. Why did everyone try to make their game around these boring quest objectives? what happened to putting emphasis on the grind. Look at a game like asheron's call or everquest classic. Both games had their own style of approaching the level "grind" but in each game you didnt rush to be high level because it was fun to do everything inbetween. In asheron's call, the devs pushed out content every month to further the storyline and as such you would do these quests that would reward you with unique items. The quests had no markings on some minimap, they just exsisted in the world and were very few and far between, but because getting to lvl 126 was so time consuming people invested a heavy amount of effort into their characters. GW2 has none of this.

I have discovered that most people just breeze right past them following the paths of dynamic events and karma hearts or rushing to reach level 80. There are hidden out of the way places full of whimsy, detail and story telling. Sometimes find a hidden boss node and lure the boss out to fight in a public venue.

I hear them whining that jumping puzzles are hard (my platformer friends have no problem with them, and I'm getting decent at them). Or whining because they can't grind and then clobber everyone with their stats. I hear people whining that a well organized team of lower level characters could clobber a big zergy mess of level 80s who have no respect for seige weapons...
It boggles my mind that people complain because the game actually requires skill and say it isn't fun. Really? Is watching turn-based actions determined by chance/odds (statistics) more exciting? Is it more rewarding?
I guess most MMO players DO NOT like games of skill-- they want/love/need to grind.
This game feels like all the best parts of EQ, Elder Scrolls and Tribes Ascend combined.
My favorite WvW moment was holding a camp against 15 other players. I was playing a level 40 Elementalist, no idea what level the Ranger with me was. The two of us bottled up the enemy at a narrow door (someone from their group SHOULD have been guarding it). We dropped every AOE we had on that door and 4 of them died trying to get through. We skirmished 3 more-- killing two, but then the rest of the group zerged us while we were on cooldown. We died, but we had delayed them long enough that our main group showed and crushed them within 30 seconds. We were rezzed and charged off to cause more chaos.
So misinformed, but amusing for its lack of knowledge. I give it 92, it has a good beat and I can dance to it.

First, the game is NOT perfect. There are many bugs and there are many things working PRECISELY as designed to by ANet that I have 'philosophical' differences with. I say this as a caveat because there are things I'll list that I love that I also have problems with...
WvWvW: Open world, yet consensual PVP
DE's: I enjoyed the concept in Rift and I enjoy it in GW2 (when it's not broken)
Variety of professions/builds. Nearly endless level of customization and nearly every trait choice is valid (or idiotically stupid) depending on the scenario.
Graphic design/Art style. Sorry, but I *never* liked WoW's artwork.
ANet's relationship with the community (Paying attention, BioWare?)
No need for 83 various mods/customizations to make the damn UI usable.
No gearscore
No "need tank and heals then G2G"
Fast travel.
Separate PVE/PVP
No need to compete with ANYONE on your server for kills/harvesting nodes/phat lewts
Slight steampunk'ish-ness
The list goes on...

I agree also, I log on for about 5 minutes each day, try to do WvWvW but realize that It's completely pointless. Attacking SM Is just not fun, It really insn't. I have actually re-subbed back to WoW, MOP Is pretty fun, especially with the world PVP now back In full swing.

You know, ive been asking my self this question since i started playing this game. Whats the point?
There really isnt one. In reality every class is a swiss army knife of the holy trinity. Every class has elements of a healer, of a DPS and of a tank. There is no real purpose to playing this game because of this and other things. I figured i would start with this. SO many people tell me to stop thinking of things in terms of roles, but the reason why roles are important in every kind of game that is strategic is because people like to feel useful. By deluting the holy trinity of Healing/DPS/Tanking in this game, the people at arena.net have made the game feel less cohiesive and reduced the actual strategy involved in the game. There is nothing to hope for as a guardian because while your skills tend towards healing and tanking, you still end up doing the same general stuff as everyone else in PvE.
In Pvp, its like some one put together a really bad version of dota where every single character has only subtle differences. While i agree with the sentament that these roles needed to be changed, I dont agree with how this was done in this game. A perfect example of a working/non-boring healing system was in TERA where you had to get line of sight and then shoot off the heals like in an FPS, its so much better then locking in passive skills to allow for sustain to the entire group and then active ones for a tiny burst. Its like the game designers decided that everything should now be AOE auras and frankly wheres the skill in this? It makes PvE events into zerg fests with no meaning.
As for exploration, what are you exploring in this game? While there are little secret areas that are around in the different zones, the main idea of exploration in this game isnt really exploration. There is no true discovery in this game because everything is laid out for you in a nice neat categorized way. Look at how it would go when you first enter a new zone. You come in, you talk to the scout who spouts some garbage about what each quest hug wants you to do, then you make yoru way towards the quest hub picking up the mineral nodes and check points along the way which show up on your minimap far ahead of time. Everysingle aspect of this game is completely static. Even the dynamic events are static. In most cases, there are people waiting near where the dynamic event starts so they can get in on it every time it starts.
The high level content is even worse. There is none. While WoW raids are far from perfect and infact i favor the old EQ raids and AC quests rather then WoW raids, they are better then having absolutely nothing new. Whats the point in getting lvl 80 when there is so little lvl 80 content? I hit lvl 80 on 2 characters in this game and my guild has a bunch of lvl 80s in it, most of them out right stopped playing the game after a few days into 80 because they lost interest. Why run the same dynamic events over and over and over again? Thats worse then trying to beat the same raid bosses over and over and over again because the dynamic events dont really give you anything worth a damn since items and skills are almost meaningless in this game anyhow.
Personally, I think vinilla wow was the last true MMO. Why did everyone try to make their game around these boring quest objectives? what happened to putting emphasis on the grind. Look at a game like asheron's call or everquest classic. Both games had their own style of approaching the level "grind" but in each game you didnt rush to be high level because it was fun to do everything inbetween. In asheron's call, the devs pushed out content every month to further the storyline and as such you would do these quests that would reward you with unique items. The quests had no markings on some minimap, they just exsisted in the world and were very few and far between, but because getting to lvl 126 was so time consuming people invested a heavy amount of effort into their characters. GW2 has none of this.

I have discovered that most people just breeze right past them following the paths of dynamic events and karma hearts or rushing to reach level 80. There are hidden out of the way places full of whimsy, detail and story telling. Sometimes find a hidden boss node and lure the boss out to fight in a public venue.
"I haven't found it so it doesn't exist." Seems to be the common conception.
