Tsw did leveling better, but gw2 has more variety at endgame.
War did some things better pvp wise, some things worse, but gw2 has better pve
Swtor and Aoc just plain sucked
Rift, while a decent game isn't for me at all, its a wow style raid grinder
Dcuo I couldn't get to work
Darkfall, tera few others never even tried them.
I think overall gw2 does most things "good enough" for me, there's nothing mindblowing though. E.g. WvW Is fun but it ain't daoc or planetside. The exploration is fun but it ain't daoc or EQ or whatever. the break from hub based questing is great, but I think tsw did it better. The crafting is better than your typical wow crafting but it ain't eve.
I would go further back than 2005 though, I most definetly prefer gw2 to wow as gw2 is a balanced game for all playstyles where as wow is a raiders first game.
Obvious agenda is obvious... let's nip this in the bud then.
Just a hint to the OP before he tries to use this poll in other threads as any kind of GW2 bashing argument. A game not being the "best" for people doesn't make it automatically a "bad" game for those same people.
My "milestone" MMORPGs are UO, AC1, WoW and now GW2. So, since 2005, there has been no game as good as GW2 for me. But as I said, that doesn't mean there haven't been good games since 2005. LOTRO comes to my mind (before Turbine ruined the lore with flashy classes and turned it into the most awful pay 2 win model of the industry, of course), a good game, but not on my top list.
I asked the exact same question about TSW after launch.
Why do you like to use the word "agenda" so much? It's like your on a crusade or something.
Can't say as I have not played every MMO that has been released.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Star Wars the Old Republic ( at least it had story and decent combat instead of pointless zerging...)
Rift
...and a bunch of others probably, I´d say even TERA has an edge over GW2, so in short, GW2 is probably the worst piece of MMO-ware I ever touched. Oh wait there was some strange asian one I tried but I don´t remember the name.
Ultimatly GW2 has been good for MMO's, there was a string of MMO dissapointments, I think investers were starting to think WoW's success was a fluke.
However I don't think we will really know if GW2's a great MMO until at least six months down the road. I have played quite a few MMO's for a month or two then got tired of them. I think that happens quite a bit with other people as well.
So Far EVE and WoW are the MMO's that captured my interest for more than a few months. (But that's just me)
But the early indications seem to be that GW2 will be going strong for the long run. (Just the sheer number of 'I don't like GW2' threads seem to indicate it's the next big thing)
Age Of Conan - challenging classes, challenging raids/dungeons, alot more zones then it gets credit for (and each zone had VERY dynamic and different landscape), great character creator, large amount of different gear options (cept for casters)
DC Universe - Combat that didnt pretend to be actiony, but actually was and forced you to think on the fly (not my style, but was very intense), good quest progression with a story at the end of every trail. Great gear itemization. Good mix of classes and even better customization options.
LOTRO - everything was above average to great about this game. the setting wasn't for me though. I dont think this game had a flaw (before it became FTP)
TSW - Better quests, Skill wheel added complexity and thought to building a toon, great class selection that didnt tie you down. Ok gear itemization, but didnt like that it wasnt linked to your stats, Dungeons are superb and the world offers itself well to exploration because of the very dynamic and different landscapes (much like AoC).
Rift - it's an above average game that stayed with the basic WoW mold, but added rifts and invasions. The dungeons were okay, never got to endgame. Classes and skills are far superior. Crafting was superior. in general Rift was more fun than GW2. Each class felt different (and not just because of the weapon they were carrying).
WAR - only the PVP was better (coming from a care bear perspective)...it's the only game I pvp'd ALOT in cuz it was fun. The rest of the game was on par with GW2....bland, generic.
WAR and SWTOR were massive failures trying to copycat one of the best MMO's ever created.
Fixed this for you.
You not liking a MMORPG doesn't make it bad. WoW is the most successful MMO of all times for now, and there are many good reasons why so many players enjoy(ed) that game. And commercially, it's definitely still the best.
A game which maintained millions of subscribers for 8 years is definitely one of the best games ever, and that would be true even if I don't like the game.
Sadly, the above mentionned clones completely failed where WoW succeeded.
That's nonsense. It is like saying that McDonalds is good because so many people eat there. Commercial success does not come only from the "goodness" of a game, it comes from marketing, hype, catering to a broad number of individuals and so on and so forth.
Beside the therm good is quite subjective. I think WoW is not a very good MMORPG as it is too linear, instanced, cross-server and what not which takes away from the persistant world feeling but a lot of other seem to disagree with me.
Perhaps the OP should have asked if any MMO has shifted the paradigm further in the last 7 years to show it was a thread for GW2 fans only. That way he might have had the result he was angling for.
on a side note, SWTOR was the worst P2P MMORPG out of all the ones I listed and GW2. Nothing is worse than that game. If GW2 is generic (it is), SWTOR is pure plastic....but, Im not a star wars fan, so the lore meant nothing to me....the gameplay was atrocious.
Originally posted by Jimmy562 In my opinion SWTOR. I enjoy playing GW2 but enjoy SWTOR a little more.
I think this says it all. Clearly SWTOR is better than GW2. GW2 is F2P but like most f2p the play just isn't all that. Some people may be overwhelmed by the free status, but more an more are becoming underwelmed by the play. Therefor just about any MMO since 2005 is enough to out shine gw2.
In your opinion. I played Rift, TERA, WoW, and TSW and all felt lacking compared to GW2. Why? I am paying a monthly fee to play the game so I should be getting more than SERVER maintenance. None of the games were outstanding and I feel GW2 isn't amazing - good yes. I di play the beta od SWTOR and felt it was a poorly constructed Single player game. You really didn't need to play with anyone until dungeons.
Back to OT - as I said, GW2 is a good game and will get better. I don't think A.Net realized how many people would actually play the game at the beginning there wouldn't have been the growing pains that have occured.
One of the problems with this thread is, everyone has a different opinion on what is better. If you say has there been a more successful MMO since 2005 that would be one thing. But when you ask, is there a better MMO, that is simply an opinion and Opinions are going to differ.
So what you get is, the first person says, "I have an opinion about a personal preference," then the next person comes along and say. "Your opinion is wrong!"
I just wanted to say that it has been very refreshing reading this thread.
Most of the replies over the 7 pages seem to indicate that GW2 is not at the top of many people's list however the usual personal attacks and venom spitting fanboy nonsense is nowhere to be seen.

Me personally:
SWG tops my list of all time fave MMORPGs never since has a game had so much depth, complexity and freedom imo. If I could have and SWG2.0 with all of the production values of something like GW2 or SWTOR I would be in hogs heaven.
Apart from that my list would be:
WAR - PvP'd the most in this game out of any, was fun
Aion actually had me playing for several months. Aside from that, though, all of the games after 2004, including Guild Wars 2, have been a steaming pile, for me.
I mean I like GW2 and play it, but I'm subbed to LotRO since 2007 and is far more captivating than GW2 imo. Not the most gigantic dragon or the most dynamic event can invoke the feeling of my first steps through the gates of Moria, or the first sight of Isengard.
LotRO nails world design, for me, nothing comes even close, and world design is the most important aspect for me. In a PvE game at least.
Originally posted by fenistil Lotro WAS until f2p.
Why? What did fundamentally change since Freemium?
Epic quests, world design and book authenticity hasn't really suffered. They introduced more grind. But they already had this for 2 years into Moria... It was even worse back then with no small-scale possibility to gain end-game gear.
And they did it, because people DEMANDED it. People were complaining left and right during SoA and Helegrod raids that there was not enough endgame content to burn through. So they introduced guilds, rep-grind and gated content. Again, yeeears before Freemium.
So for me, it hasn't changed a bit. I sitll pay my 15 bucks a month and get everything... even more, mothly points bought me Riders of Rohan right off the bat.

Personally, I've enjoyed most of the MMOs I've played in the last 7 years more than GW2.
As far as themeparks go, TSW is far more enjoyable to me. I've also enjoyed STO, CO, LOTRO, Aion, SWTOR, WAR, and several others much more than GW2.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Now the absurdity of this statement, makes me lol.

Age of Conan
The Secret World
Star Wars the Old Republic ( at least it had story and decent combat instead of pointless zerging...)

DAoC - Excalibur & Camlann
Why shake your head? it means youa re surprised that people like other MMOS more than GW2?
I don't even think you know what 'each to his own means' because you clearly don't respect his opinion or his preferences.
