nothing you said makes D&D, D&D to me.. D&D to me is about the stories, the lore, and the dungeon diving.
...but those would be common to any game that you slapped the title on. You could change the names of the classes and monsters in Guild Wars and call it D&D, and if it was any good, it would fit your description.
What we are missing is the mechanics, the intricate rules that allow you to customize your character to take advantage of certain situations.
What makes my fighter different from yours? By how much? And how do you measure it? What are the odds? How do the statistics break down?
That's what is missing.
i like robust character customization as much as the next person but i can accept this is an action game this is not a traditional slower paced D&D game.. its loosely based on the 4e edition obviously which is a more streamlined ruleset than previous ones. While yes once I hit 60 and want to play around more with my class I'm sure this will bother me more and more but for now i'm ok with what is there. There is a decent amount of stats to play around with right now and you can pick and choose what type of class you want to play based on that.. For now i'm running all crit gear on my rogue but later I may change it up for more health with health steal instead.. it's not the best customization but it works for now..
The main issue with the current power setup is lack of power options.. they completely overhauled the power system during the final beta weekend to make it closer to the 4e ruleset.. the issue is they don't have enough total powers to make the system really work like its supposed to. If down the road they double the amount of powers it will actually mimic the 4e set nicely.. that and adding a decent amount more classes will help as well..
again i knew this was an action rpg more akin to a 3d diablo set in the forgotten realms world with a very robust dungeon creater that puts to shame pretyy much any other MMOs dungeon maker to date. And i'm pleased with what i got. I could whine all day long it doesn't fit into what I "want" from a D&D game or enjoy what is presented or move on.. for now i'm enjoying what i'am presented as it's actually a lot of damn fun
What does that have to do with whether or not it appeals to an audience dedicated enough to keep playing and paying money?
My point is that it is intentionally attempting to attract archetypal action-MMO gamers instead of the traditional D&D playerbase, and I think that that is a poor decision.

who said that is who they are targetting at all?... 4E takes D&D in a very new direction and its reflected in this game.. also foundry offers a lot of good old dungeon crafting which should appease a lot of old school D&D fans.. i did a couple with some very well positioned traps that messed me up lol
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. It has a very D&D feel.. i dunno why people bitch so much its not D&D as the game feels like D&D and has lots of familiar characters and names
Where's the D&D feel? Why is my character magically restricted from using different weapons or armour? What happened to multiclassing? Where's the d20? (I demand a d20 somewhere, either in a combat log ala NWN, BG, TOEE or on the screen like in DDO!)
The D20 is at the character select screen when you pick your stats.
As for the other stuff, its an a ction MMO, its the only way it was going to work. The other deeper stuff would be better suited for a single player game or LAN game.
I have been a long time fan of DnD and I think Neverwinter is great. You just have to realise its a game designed for fun, not depth.

Let me see if I've got this thought process worked our here:
"Well, it's based on a system that everyone hates, but we made up for that by letting them move walls around!"
Who is going to pay money to create dungeons that no one wants to play through?

The rules that allow people to customize their character to take advantage of usually a very specific kind of situation thus being detrimental to their party in all others or at other levels until they peak for that short period of time? Also, that is a thing you can still do in fourth edition and to a degree in the game, all depends how you play. And how you measure it is a pretty subjective idea. You could measure it by the difference in feat spending, the difference in gear, hp, or maybe the person playing the characer.
Theres always the Diplomancer who can win the game at pretty much every game because 3.5 and Pathfinder are so well balanced feat wise after all? And 4e is a completely different sort of DnD than earlier iterations. In original DnD where races were the classes?
Well, for me, this was just another huge Cryptic dissapointment. Forgotten Realms and D&D deserve so much better than this. I'm trying to think of one redeeming quality that this game might have. Maybe the Foundry, I like the idea. But if the base game is crap, even the best Foundry stuff is going to be more of the same.
Lore and stories are, meh, I've seen so much better in just about every other game I can think of, including Age of Wushu, and that shit didn't even make sense. This is Forgotten Realms ffs, it should be EPIC right from the get go. It should immerse the hell out of you right away.
Graphics are mediocre, the game world is mediocre, the character animations are terrible, (my priest was doing some sort of combat disco slide...just awful). The combat is like Tera minus the fun and polish. It feels like an ARPG rather than a full MMO.
It has very few classes, hardly any abilities and they are all kind of generic and boring, instances around every corner, no real depth in the systems....it's exhausting me even talking about it.
I've played some crap games in my day, I can look past a lot. But for some reason this entire game just pisses me off.
I apologize in advance to those who read this and feel they need to write a post about how wrong I am. If you like the game, more power to you. Honestly, it's just my opinion, and you shouldn't give a shit what I think.

i know.. i see this with every game I play though and have these talks all the time it seems.. same thing happened with GW2.. many people went in with preconceived notions of what the game should be instead of looking at the game for what it is. I have seen several come back to gw2 and really enjoy themselves once they put their biases away and just played the game and enjoy everything it had to offer.

It's ok but the RMT prices are so damn high i never saw something like that before, respec costs Zen (600 Zen roughly 6$) if you want the rank 3 (fastest) mounts you need either 4000 Zen (roughly 40$, lol) or 2 million Astral diamonds (you can only obtain 25k per day on playing ingame). All this RMT stuff bleeds through the whole game, you want too disenchant your Items? Pay Astral Diamonds, want to get a good companion (up too Rank 30 normal companions only get 15 ranks then you need too pay ludicrous amount of Diamonds)? Drop some Zen, you could try your hand on the AH because there you only pay with Astral Diamonds (is this p2w?). Want too level your crafting faster? Pay with Astral Diamonds.Right now the conversion rate for Astral Diamonds is around 500 Diamonds for 1 Zen, so do the math.Right now most people ingame still have allot of Diamonds too spare because of the packs, we will see the outcry when most people burned through them, if they are feed up and do something about it or shut up and pay like good little milk cows.
Winner. And something the "boosters" of this game can say nothing about.
I guess this would matter if you were in a race with someone to see who can level thier crafting the fastest. Dont think it makes it pay win i have 600,000 diamonds and i cant find a thing to buy that i would use i hate leveling fast

I think loving GW1 and going into GW2 can be a huge preconceived notion for many because you then draw comparisons between the two.. with gw2 its such a departure from gw1 you cant really make many comparisons at all aside from some lore.. when you get into game mechanics so many get dissapointed because gw2 doesn't have this or that they loved in gw1 and that sits in their heads instead of just seeing what the game is and what makes it a great game imho..

You can buy 30% of a tier 3 mount. Since you are restricted to refining 25k of them a day, you only have to go on saving them for another 56 days (without spending any on anything else, of course) before you can get that mount. Unless you open your wallet to lay out the cash (which is the whole point of Cryptic of making the grind for such items suck).

You can always try that, I suppose, but the markets are flooded with the common stuff that drops, so there is not much need to buy most of the things on there. They few rare/desirable items on there, the last time I played (which was a while back, I will grant you) were priced almost as high as the cash shop, and higher for the lock box rares. The monetization model is one of the weakest parts of this game (and that is saying something).
One thing that i thought was cooler than shit is the Neverwinter gateway thingy i wish more games had this feature. Nice to be able to craft and stuff when im at school

You know that you actually earn normal Astral Diamonds in game yeah? Not everything rewards Rough Astrals. I got about 60k ADs in one day (about 4 hours play), and that was without refining anything.
So, especially those who hadn't played Neverwinter yet, since you started and I have to wait another 2 days (sob), how did it start? How is it going? First impressions?
And are there cows? I want cows. There are never enough cows in these games...
What I will say before: This game needs not to be purchased and I am glad I did not. Simply because it will be fun for a while, but only for a rather short while. In terms of how uber-repetitive the combat system is.

It seems that it does get a bit repetitive, at least at lower levels, when you don't have all the skills available to mix it up a bit. However, I think the same can be said about every game with action(y) combat, where you don't have screen full of spells and toolbars.
