which "free to play" game was worst scam for you?

Lovely_LalyLovely_Laly Member UncommonPosts: 734

one more point about said "f2p": they scam players for 1000s of $ and feel good as they don't have much cost for maintenance, support, development and such.

most sells you might or final gear upgrades for astronomical prices, some sells you even more (mount, tele etc useful stuff).

I must admit, it very hard to calculate correct costs of such upgrades or even final cost of your gaming.

I hope we can discuss freely here, and our minds are not controlled by "f2p" scam companies.

To me worst was Runes of Magic. Nice and friendly at beta game, turned fast into money sucking disaster. Someone made calcs for final gear cost (before 2x lvl cap up), and it was min 700 and max 1500$. Plus to this need to add mount cost (you can't find/earn/buy it with game money), rest I can't recall well, it was most cosmetic items.

after this experience I pay lot of attention not to be driven into the same trap. Now I pay few (like max 50$ per year) or nothing at all, I looks poor compare to active CS's but I think crap game should not charge more than box game (GW2, TSW) or even VIP access game (9$ every once in a while, LOTRO).

WoW with premium service cost like 200$ per year and have more content than all f2p together + safe + polished.

try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2

I payed a small amount in PWI back years ago - like maybe Ive put in $150, but there are a few players walking around in what is estimated to be $5k-7k worth of gears and many many players who've spent in the region of $3k.  What killed PWI a while back was the introduction of very OP gears purchasable wtih real cash.  Like after Ive played for 4years, you can walk in with a credit card and within 2 weeks be my level and out dd me by 5 x.  Its for this reason I want to hear more about Neverwinter before I jump in since PWI own it.

ACtually no its not about money managment, and as usual most people miss the point, so here I will make it very very simply for you and your friend.  In this example.

Pure free to play games , meaning no box cover and no sub option cash shop only and not a game that was converted from sub AOC LOTRO etc.  can cost anywhere from 500 to 1000 dollars to max out one character, plus bank housing and mount costs.

P2P game box plus sub one year = 240 dollars to max out as many characters as you want.

But I know I know you can run around with gimped characters in 10 games at once and not spend a dime!

The original poster is asking for the most heinous examples of P2W. People are going to pop in and try and talk about why all F2P games are horrible or all F2P games are super awesome instead of realising that there are some really crazy F2P games with P2W that would blow your face off.

Allods Online for me.  Didn't fall for the "scam".  Just took one look at the patch notes, saw how you had to use teh cash shop, said "nope", and that was that.

Other than that, Allods Online is a great game, but that single moment left a bad taste in my mouth that has prevented me from ever returning to Allods Online.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

    Atlantica

Sure you could play for free, but to keep up you need the package for teleport, auto battle, auto search etc so thats about $15.  Thats fine $15 not so much for a month's enjoyment, but wait, new merc, item mall only and to get them fully buffed thats another $60 and these mercs are stronger than the normal ones.  Want more protection? buy a mount. Actually buy a "chance" of a mount cause you buy a box that MAY have a mount in it but more than likely will not so you gotta buy more.   They have a currency in game, everyone wants to sell stuff for, nice you can always buy that currency from item mall

I played since beta, probably spent $800-$1000 which is nothing when i know some were spending up to $4000 A MONTH. I had a good 4+ yrs but was never gonna be up with the best.

If someone with the ability were to read this, make a monthly sub version, say $15-$20 a month you would be swamped with players

None... I don't spend cash in bad f2p games. DDO is the only f2p game I've ever spent money on, and techinically I was a subscriber that used the cash shop. It was a very good game until they added all the end game junk, so I can't say I was scammed.

I'm currently thinking of spending cash in Neverwinter, but Im not yet convinced its a huge money sink instead of a fun MMO.

  • SmikisSmikis Member UncommonPosts: 1,045
man there isnt single game on the market worth box price curently, let a lone f2p game even worth taking time to open webpage,  spent nothing on f2p games, will continue to do so

Runes of Magic for me, after playing for a few months and spending some cash on mounts and inventory space, I realized at the top level the average player was spending 400-600 in the cash shop to upgrade their gear, and some whales who spent several thousand dollars had a huge advantage in gear over the rest of the population.

I didn't spend much there though, maybe 90 bucks for me and my son, so no harm really, just opened my eyes to the tactics that some "F2P" titles employ.

But the only real scam I ran into was in a title called Earth Eternal, where I guess in a last ditch effort to save the company they offered some very nice cash shop items at big discount, which I spent about 50 bucks on, only to see the game shut down about 3 weeks later.

I see they removed the EE forums from this site here at some point, had to look it up on wikipedi to make sure I got the name right.

So far, games that start out as F2P from the beginning haven't impressed me much, but some of the conversions like Aion and L2 have proven to be pretty good deals.

Some f2p games are like that.  Some don't require any cost to max your character.

In a p2p game what if it takes you longer than a year to max your character?

When Anarchy Online added p2w cash shop to their repertoire,at that moment i knew that my subs didnt go to game development and it was time to move on.

ps.not actually free to play game but they had free to play option since 2004 or something.

It sounds like he is trying to inform people that think F2P is good that it is really a scam and they are getting ripped off, but in the guise of a question to make it seem like common knowledge so people will try to agree with him because they don't want to appear stupid. What he said is true though, I've been bitching about it over on Massively for weeks in hopes that some people would snap out of their pro-F2P stupor or someone that is better with words will stad up and explain it to everyone in a way that will make them understand. I'm so fed up with this F2P crap and the many mindless people that just go along with it and scream about how great it is when it's terrible and call for every game should be F2P when only old games near death should be F2P.

Basically, F2P is only good for the company and bad for the players.

Also, as FlyingBuddha said on Massively,

"It's like there's no perspective or overall acknowledgement of the effect of the model on the quality of games. There's a huge difference between F2P and Sub in respect to a developer's goals. The games now are focused on MMO tourists - frontload a little content, try to make $5 on each visitor and move on. Sure, there's a billion games out there right now, but 99% of them suck. There's no motivation left for developers to build a giant immersive world or more importantly, for anyone to fund it. Everything is geared towards game hopping casuals, and it sucks."

I think it's much better for the players.  It lets the players determine how much they want to spend.

Runes of Magic and Atlantica Online

both games are fun till you reach high lvl then you feel you need (i would say you have to) spend real money if you want to be competitive

the worst i think its AO because if you want a mount, cosmetic etc etc... you must be lucky

in RoM at least if you want a mount you have it

I spent $120 on the CE edition of SWTOR plus purchased a 3 month sub.  That was a expensive game.  I'm just glad they didn't offer a lifetime sub.

Over it's life 8 years of paying for subs and expansions for EQ2 is by and far the most I have spent on a game.  There isn't even a close 2nd.  In fact I'm pretty sure you could add up everything I have spent on every MMO I have played and it wouldn't be as much as EQ2 has cost me.

Vindictus perhaps, the sheer amount of money spent on runes by players to upgrade their weapons, is staggering. Some players spend thousands of dollars per month on this game.
