Games like that are a joke and should be removed from the MMO genera.

I think you missed the part where I explain I'm not tempted at all. It might be a state of mind you can't comprehend but, trust me, these things don't matter.
Ok let me spell this out for you because you know what its happening in these F2P (P2W) games. Jim and James play lets say Runes of Magic. Jim is single has no family and lives an apartment, has $1000+ a month free for whatever he wants. James has 3 kids, a wife, 2 car payments, a mortgages maybe $50 to $100 a month for his personal entertainment each moth some months he has to go without because of bills for the kids. They both want to raid in Runes of Magic however guess what Jim can afford too because it cost $800 a month in potions, buffs and other things needed to raid. James cannot afford to. So what because a publisher wants to be greedy these 2 friends should not be able to play and enjoy the content together? Yes it’s a game, a game that 2 friends play together to chit chat and have fun not to see 1 sitting in game doing nothing with the other raids because well 1 can afford too the other cannot.
So yes Neverwinters F2P system sucks, it’s just as bad as runes of magic. I already today seen 3 guilds saying if you were not spending at least $200 a month in Zen for needed end game zen items then do not apply. So yes it does matter because it pits 1 person’s wallet vs another person’s wallet. End of Story.
Would James have enough time to raid as hardcorely and progress as fast as Jim would?
Also, $800 on a VIDEOGAME? heck i could buy a pretty decent new computer for that much. He should save for a down payment on a house or condo or someting, better investment.
Originally posted by mcrippins and this is why the f2p model isn't a solution......
The thing is, what is the problem that we are looking for a solution to? F2P is merely an option for people who like it. I doubt many people here would consider neverwinter a game that was worth a monthly sub.
The first F2P game I can recall is a game called Perfect World. It was actually a decent game, but I would not have considered it AAA. I personally think the problem stems from real world entitlement issues. Or at least has followed this path because of that. So many people just want free things. Once a competitor or big name offers something for free, others try to match it. All of the sudden everything is dirt cheap / free, and quality has diminished. For those companies that can afford to give things out for free and still maintain quality will also squash the little guys who try to compete, and cannot win. I realize this is out of the scope of what we were originally talking about, but business is business.
I have friends who won't pay for subs at all. They just absolutely refuse. Then when we play a f2p - they mooch of course, and I end up spending $50 in the cash shop in the first month. Mostly because the perks are there, and why not get an advantage if it's available to you and within your budget? That being said, I would much prefer everyone be on the same equal level without any advantage (no matter how small) and give them my 50 cents a day. Seems fair. I see no problem. For those who want things for 'free' - should get 'free' quality things.
There are so many different versions of P2W that it no longer has any meaning in this industry. Some may say that, at worst, Neverwinter is a game with a Pay for faster Progression for those who lack the time to get there otherwise. Though even then the prices are absurd and you can really tell that they don't understand what a micro transaction is. Putting down $35 for a companion or $40 for a horse is no less than ridiculous and every time I want to give them a few dollars for my entertainment, I see their prices and talk myself out of it. I wouldn't mind paying $50 a month at my own discretion so long as I felt like I wasn't getting ripped off, but I feel as though I can get so much more with that $50 rather than a character bound mount or some such. The whole point of the micro transaction model for for transactions to be... well, micro. For you to say "Hey, this is only five bucks... and this three... and this seven... and this three again... and this only two! Heck, I'll get three of each!" Not just thinking you might want to support them with some money, but then instantly feeling ripped off when you look at the prices because they're five to ten times the price they should be.
But I don't know where I stand on the whole "P2W" position. One part of me thinks I'm an extremist in that I believe that someone who has the means to put in 18 hours a day has a definitive advantage over those who do not. They are quite literally giving up the ability to work or, or to do be doing something to make money, in which to get more powerful at the game faster than anyone else. Games that have boosts then, in my eyes, level the playing field and make it so both parties can reach a point in progression at roughly the same time. Perhaps even to catch up with a friend who is a power gamer. I know FFXIV put things in place so that power gamers didn't have advantage over others because more time equals more power, and in the working world it also equates to more/less money. It didn't go over too well for obvious reasons, but they recognized it as a problem of one person getting more progression / power over another quickly. Though that's just a part of this genre, some would say. Which is true, but at the same time it doesn't mean that we can't actively search for ways to even the playing field and support our favorite games at the same time.
When Diablo III rolled around we saw something where players could sell their time to other players by trading something they worked hours on finding to someone who used that time to make said money in that they would then give to the one who put in the time. The error here was that Diablo III was a game based on luck and chance, a loot based game whereby someone could get something very powerful in one minute of game player or the same thing after three months of trying. It wasn't compatible with the genre. But I digress on that opinion.
There currently is a form of true Pay to Win within Neverwinter, and it isn't just someone not liking the cash shop and automatically saying it's Pay to Win when it isn't (as is the usual case with these and other forums). It's the companions as they are implemented right now. As of this date they have still not released the training books that will allowed white text companions to "evolve". They're in the companions shop and only cost gold, but they're still unavailable. This makes it so those who bought a purple companion in the cash shop are able to have a rank 30+ companion, whereas those who don't use the cash shop can only have a rank 15 companion. In terms of the cleric, it makes it a nuisance as it will get one shot in level 50 areas. It's practically useless whereas as level 30 companion has a much higher chance to survive and apply such things as barriers and heal bonuses to the player since their companion is still alive after going into combat. I've read the complaints on their site, and people just keep on saying that "they have to get their money some how" and "they won't unlock those books until they sell more purple companions". But at the same time, when people really start to question it, they can fall back on "well, it's in the stores, we just have to activate it" or some such when people start to yell "P2W".
It has left a big distaste in my mouth that I have to buy 3500 zen just to fully experience the game (as my companions are maxed at 15) as I view leveling companions an enjoyable part of the game that I am being left out of at present. I'm not even able to use any of my companions anymore as they just get one shot. As a whole I've completely stopped playing the game myself and will likely go back to it when the books are released. Though, in all honesty, that's the only form of actual P2P there is unless, for some reason, you view boosts to be P2W despite you actually winning nothing other than losing a month's worth of eating out and going to the movies in terms of how much money it costs. There is a difference between Pay for fast Progression and Pay to Win whereby you are more powerful at level 60 than another level 60 because you have a cash shop item (I.E. a purple companion helping you). I used to think Defiance's Dodge Challenger was pay to win because it was advertised as the fastest car in the game and only available if you pre-ordered. In it you could get to locations faster, quests faster, complete things faster and overall get to max much quicker than anyone else. But that was very narrow minded of me and in hindsight quicker level progression does not equate winning. I would still be able to fight on equal terms against these players in both PvE and PvP as nothing else is barred from me that will make them more powerful.
As a whole we probably will never see any new payment models so long as we are vindictive or what new things people try, or innovating things they attempt to bring in their game. To date people still compare WoW to everything, see WoW in everything, and have a set of standards in their mind which (some) equate to being a bad game if they try and do something different and not have it. The ability to choose and to have all types of payment models is a good thing. Some may dislike one while also enjoying the others. Though as a whole I personally would like a little bit of each. As was said in a post before me, I would never be able to pay for 10 P2P games at once. Heck, I've actually just recently swore off P2P games after calculating that WoW has cost me well over $3,500. My own brother gave me a look when I told him that, saying that I was a sucker for paying over three thousand dollars for one game that I don't even own and can never play again unless I fall into the same trap. I'm absolutely against renting games now, and will only play F2P (with proper microtransactions) or B2P games. Indeed, I may still give them $5-15 a month just for support, but the fact that I can stop at any time and still have access to my characters and the game is what makes me feel safe and getting my money's worth. To support such a company that doesn't just rent me their game and bank off of guaranteed monthly payments and only bring a patch every six months. That's roughly $90 or practically two video games. Maybe five the ten games on steam when there's a sale. Do I personally think a single raid and a couple of dailies is worth five to ten video games of content? Not so much.
But variety is sometimes good, and if a game thinks they can actually live up to WoW then more power to them. It has yet to really happen, and when they go F2P they get a bad reputation as well as a host of players, money and sometimes even bad attitudes as opposed to just going B2P from the start and having a relatively good community. There are many choices and options now that models have to be carefully constructed as there's just another game someone can play for cheaper, and possibly have more fun. As for me, I'll probably never peruse the Neverwinter Shop; I'm almost morally object to using the foundry since they will just give them more content as a whole for others to potentially get hooked on and support a costly business model in terms of overpriced cash shop items. Though that does give me and idea of something for the future; content creation providing game time on P2P games. Actually working to improve the game in some way and getting free monthly time. Maybe even cash shop currency if the game doesn't have a subscription, or a subscription on a hybrid subscription game where it's a choice to have it or not. Who knows?
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing). German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century. Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now). I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things). In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while. If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.
Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this. If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own. Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis. Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Just a little correction, I believe the mounts are account bound, meaning every character you make gets one. Companions are character specific, because, I assume, you can unbind them after leveling and attempt to sell them on the AH for a profit.
I want it to succeed and to get many new additions. I'm playing for free and the things in the cash shop don't tempt me at all.
That's the trick to playing ftp for free.. just stop thinking a minor bonus or cosmetic actually matters, because it doesn't. Some person pays $2K on Runes of Magic. Like I said I knew someone who spent $500 on that game, played with him in rift before I quit.
Runes of Magic isn't Neverwinter.
In RoM you need the cash shop items to even be able to have a chance of doing the endgame content. That isn't happening in Neverwinter, not even a hint of it, and anyone who thinks it is happening is just flat out wrong. No point arguing about it, they are just plain, old fashioned wrong.
RoM is for mentalists anyway.. why would someone play one of the primary WoW clones when it costs up to 50x more a month than playing WoW? When WoW is clearly the better game...
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Not questioning whether or not it happens, I guess I just cant get into that mindset of someone who would spend that much. In the same way I cant get my head around how someone would spend 10+ hours everyday trying to be the hardcorest raider on the server.

I'll spell this out for you:
If Jim is stupid enough to spend $800 a month on a game he has failed at life and isn't achieving anything.
As for 'needed endgame items'.. either those guilds are clueless, it was just someone trolling or you're just making it up.
The one guild was talking about scrolls of life needing 500 Minium per month because they are a hardcore PVP guild at end game. If I do my math right this is what it comes out to be. stack of 5 is 300 Zen, 2500 zen for $25. So I would need to spend $300 a month just on scrolls of life for that PVP guild that popped up. If I am understanding the scrolls right they restore a persons health to full per use and they can be used in PVP because some of the other items say they are not able to be used in PVP. So is that not a P2W advantage in PVP?

Check out my message above because I just did a little bit more checking on what I said about the 3 guilds. I did remember the one talking about the scrolls that people must have. This is what I mean about P2W.
I dont care to much about paying for a mount here or there but honestly I cannot justify $30 or $40 for a mount in game. As far as I know and I asked around to get a mount you have to pay for it period. So why am I going to play a game where I need to pay for things like that. At least if they did have an in game mount I would be happy. See I dont want free but we nickle and dim for for everything. Give me a Sub and let me go play the game and unlock everything.

Even if some guilds out there think they need those scrolls to be able to finish elite dungeons, they are wrong. You don't need them.. that guild is wrong and the answer to the problem is just join a guild that isn't full of idiots.

Well you can get one through in game currecy 5gold for a starting mount + 50%speed. You would need to save up Astral Diamonds to buy a tier 3 mount, but that would take a long time, and it would be for only that character.
I ended up getting the $60 founder pack, since I figured, price of a new game anyway, that included the mount for all characters and alot of nice extras.
One thing that may help bring back p2p games, eliminating the box cost. Dropping $60 for the box, then $15 a month afterwards, for a game you arent even sure you are going to like? Its a stretch for some people, and many have been burned in the past, we've all seen every post WoW p2p game crash a month or 2 after release after all.
That, in fact, may be part of the alure of F2P games, you are free to play the game and explore what can be offered, without being REQUIRED to put down money first. Sure, to get the most out of it you may need to pay, but at least you can get a clearer idea of the game first.

Well what ever if they dont work then right now they dont. I wouldnt personally be surprised if one day they do because some hardcore PVP guild had 20 of its members spend $300 each and bitch that they cannot use them. I personally distrust an MMO that runs purely off of a cash shop, because more often than not they turn into P2W games. I have personally no interest in pitting my wallet against someone elses. Maybe if neverwinter holds strong in 3 to 6 months and they do not change to become like runes of magic or Evony or any of them F2P games that started as F2P I may consider it. However right now the game is not worth my time because it does not offer a subscription where I know what I am getting a month.

That, in fact, may be part of the alure of F2P games, you are free to play the game as you like and explore what can be offered, without being REQUIRED to put down money first. Sure, to get the most out of it you may need to pay, but at least you can get a clearer idea of the game first.
I would have no problem with dropping box cost. Hell I was dumb enough to buy the SWTOR CE version at $150. That was stupid however my Wife wanted to buy it for Christmas for me so I bought one for her. Still dumbest thing I done.
Subscriptions cost could come down. UO Cost $12.95 a month when I played back in 1998, today its the same amount. EQ does a tiered deal if I remember correctly.
I just have a great distrust for any game the starts out F2P because games that I know of and or played that started out F2P turned into P2W. Runes of Magic and Evony are 2 examples. I have no interest in pitting my hard earned money vs someone else’s wallet. In my humble opinion offering a subscription option with a F2P option much like SWTOR, and EQ are better ways to go. Yea the cash shop an make you more money because you sell some fiery hellebore with fire coming out his ass on a cash shop that goes the same speed as an in game mount. However with a subscription you can offer all the basic stuff as 4 or 5 bags in game, raid access, instances access, pvp access, cheaper expansions and such.
See you 3-6 months then.
I'm the opposite to you. Innocent until proven guilty.
I spent too much on games as it is. I am tired of jumping from one to another then get rick rolled. flash backs of SWTOR CE...... and EVONY.........
I don´t know, why so many ppl. can justify the fact that right now a bag has a price tag of 10$, it will cost you per character about 60$ or more (not sure how many you can carry around). This game has enough content to make it actually a B2P product, not sure why they decided not to... and it´s also somewhat unfair to those Founder out there, since they are pretty much throwing their money ouf of the window.
You get like 2.5 Mion AD for 200$ and a, to me a s--y, spider mount, in other words : you get 5 or maybe 6 x Bags with 30 Slots each worth of items currently for 1 character. As soon as you are playing a 2nd Character, that Status of being a Founder is gone, since you have no AD left and if you want to have a 2nd characater wiht 5 or more bags -> even a Founder has to pay and live with the "F2P" restrictions (AH, Zen2AD). In other words : You ain´t no ViP!
I think, if this game had a subscriptions pay method, many would have opted for that instead of paying for a beta access and going through all the obstacles they add (AD, Zen).
And about the Foundry : i am probably the onyl one, who thinks its stinks like dog foo foo. Every level looks the same... same look and feel, same textures, just minor variations like diffrent enemy type and instead of going left into a cave in the developer version, you go right this time into a room full of mobs, 200 of them. "blargh!
Ok first off Id like to say that I'm having quite a bit of fun playing this game. The game is fantastic, combat is fluid and engaging, the soft trinity is great, questing is fun, easy to get groups for skirmishes and dungeons and has cooperative and rewarding gameplay, and the foundry is one of the most innovative implementations to the MMO genre in a long time.
Now take everything they've done right with their well venerated IP and take a pay 2 win crap all over it and you've got Neverwinter. The cash shop is full of items to give unfair advantages over other players, and a massive amount of pay for convenience items. It's intrusive and annoying to be constantly be bombarded with reminders of how much better i could be by buying all their overpriced items.
Ok i already know the counterargument, "well why dont you stop freeloading and support the developers". Im not a cheap individual I just dont find paying for random crap all the time fun, and i believe all players should be on a some-what level playing field. If this title was separated from the cash shop and the game systems reworked based on that I'd gladly shell out 60 bucks plus a 15 a month sub, no problem at all.
Im not going to sit here and attack anyone if they like the free to play business model that's their perogative, but i am going to take a stand with my wallet and not support this endeavor. I fear if this project succeeds, which at this point i think it will, then other mmo developers will be more inclined to make their games in Neverwinters image, thus destroying my beloved genre even further. Anyway, just sharing my opinion, dont hate me too much!
What exactly do you feel obliged to pay for that will help you win at this game?
Serious question. There is nothing in the Zen market that I felt I needed to buy at any point going from 1 to 60. Nothing. And I never felt gimped at all. If people were buying power, I never saw it in PvP where I constantly get the top of the leaderboard and rewarded with blue items.
Do you guys actually look at the store and judge it by its merit? Or just see F2P and jump to conclusions about P2W.
The only thing close to P2W at end game, is buying items to guarantee the fusion of enhancements. You can save up enough Astral Diamonds to buy this in a few days of decent play. Or get lucky and win them. So yes, people who spend money can get them faster, and its incentivised to get Cryptic some money, but if you have enjoyed the game all the way to 60, you probably should be giving something back anyway. Or you can spend more time and earn it the harder way.
TLDR: This game won't fail because it has one of the best F2P models around and the game itself is very solid and fun.
Some person pays $2K on Runes of Magic. Like I said I knew someone who spent $500 on that game, played with him in rift before I quit.
Not questioning whether or not it happens, I guess I just cant get into that mindset of someone who would spend that much. In the same way I cant get my head around how someone would spend 10+ hours everyday trying to be the hardcorest raider on the server.

Even if some guilds out there think they need those scrolls to be able to finish elite dungeons, they are wrong. You don't need them.. that guild is wrong and the answer to the problem is just join a guild that isn't full of idiots.
Pretty much. The game was tested for difficulty using no cash shop items. You can play on easy mode in PvE by opening your wallet if you want, but its not necessary and you are only ruining your own experience.
In PvP all those items are disabled, so its balanced and fun.
The best thing you can do if you hate the financial model is play for free. I will play for free with my kids and none of us will give Craptic a dime. When we see people who have purchased stuff we will laugh at them and make fun of them in groups.
In all honesty, the game wont fail in the sense you are thinking... CO and STO have very small populations compared to other MMO's and PW keeps them running. If you want to hit them where it hurts, just keep playing for free and using up their server resources.
Whats wrong with people supporting a game they like? Good you won't pay a dime for a good game just shows how sad people are these days. To make fun of someone for supporting a game they like is pretty dumb and childish if you ask me. Oh I can't get that item so I'll make fun of the guy who did. The funny part, is the guy who can afford it is the guy who allows you to play for free. So instead of making fun of them say thank you for keeping the servers open so my cheap ass can keep playing.
Oh and you're welcome
Lets break down your little post shall we?
You said "Whats wrong with people supporting a game they like?" but NOWHERE did I say someone should not support a game they like. I would like to thank you for starting your post off with a complete fallacy.
You then say "Good you won't pay a dime for a good game" another fallacy. Once again NOWHERE did I say that. I pay a lot for games I like. I never commented on if I actually liked this game, my issue is with Cryptic as a company but you wouldnt know that since you were so busy making up stuff about my post.
This is my favorite part though, you said "Oh I can't get that item so I'll make fun of the guy who did". I have looked though my post several times and once again I found nothing that says I can not afford the items in the game. Seems that ONCE AGAIN you made stuff up and try and pass it off as fact. The truth is, I can afford pretty much anything in a computer game. You name the game and I have probably played it and left with loads of points siting on my account. I left Eve with 8 PLEX sitting on my char, as a lifer in STO and TSW I have thousands of points sitting there. As a subber for a long time to LOTRO my account is sitting on thousands of their points too.
The OP of this thread stated his opinion on why he would like to see this game fail and I simply provided a strategy that I will use since I dont like Cryptic as a company and anything I can do to take money from them sits well with me. Thanks for making stuff up and Oh BTW, you're welcome
"Sean (Murray) saying MP will be in the game is not remotely close to evidence that at the point of purchase people thought there was MP in the game." - SEANMCAD
I want it to succeed and to get many new additions. I'm playing for free and the things in the cash shop don't tempt me at all.
That's the trick to playing ftp for free.. just stop thinking a minor bonus or cosmetic actually matters, because it doesn't. I'd rather get beat a couple times in PvP than lose $200 on a game (not that getting beat in PvP would happen due to cash shop purchases anyway). It's clear to me who would be the real winner all things considered.
Just wait until you cannot win without spending $200 a week for them bonuses. Its been posted on here and I have had a few friends who played Runes of Magic. Some people has spent thousands of dollars a month just to keep up raiding, my friends had to spend $500 a month to keep up raiding in a casual guild. Games like that are a joke and should be removed from the MMO genera.
I call bullshit... you lie and lets say the very low possibly every word you speak is true... What on earth does RoM have to do with Neverwinter ? What does Champions or DC Universe or DDO or Vindictus have to do with RoM outside of it also being a f2p if you hate the company who made RoM hate Dragon Prophicies as that's by the same creators. Outside of that stop trolling with made of fib telling.

Would James have enough time to raid as hardcorely and progress as fast as Jim would?
Also, $800 on a VIDEOGAME? heck i could buy a pretty decent new computer for that much. He should save for a down payment on a house or condo or someting, better investment.
Who knows?
Just a little correction, I believe the mounts are account bound, meaning every character you make gets one. Companions are character specific, because, I assume, you can unbind them after leveling and attempt to sell them on the AH for a profit.
Well it happens.

Not questioning whether or not it happens, I guess I just cant get into that mindset of someone who would spend that much. In the same way I cant get my head around how someone would spend 10+ hours everyday trying to be the hardcorest raider on the server.
Well, since those scrolls can't even be used in PvP I think that guild might need to go over thier goals again.
I'm honestly starting to think you're just trolling and don't even know anything about the game.
Even the normal potions you find in the PvE game can't be used in PvP.
Check out my message above because I just did a little bit more checking on what I said about the 3 guilds. I did remember the one talking about the scrolls that people must have. This is what I mean about P2W.

Vannor look again. The Health Stones they have DO SAY "Cannot be used in PVP" The scrolls do not say this. so I take that as they can be used in PVP.
Even if some guilds out there think they need those scrolls to be able to finish elite dungeons, they are wrong. You don't need them.. that guild is wrong and the answer to the problem is just join a guild that isn't full of idiots.
tis is sarcasim right, cause LoL cash shop is anything but "fluffy" you can pay to unlock chars, you cna pay to get the more powerful socket things, you cna pay to get xp, and i mean per session xp faster which in turn lets you get to max level in session faster then other people which is a BIG deal.
LOL is a very good example of a game that is P2P that hides it self as one that is not
F2P may be the way of the future, but ya know they dont make them like they used to
Proper Grammer & spelling are extra, corrections will be LOL at.
This isn't about looking.. this about 'knowing'. I KNOW they can't be used in PvP. I've tried it and know other people who have tried it. It doesn't work.

Because you can earn bags, with more than enough space than you will ever need, by actually playing the game.
If you simply must have more space so you can return to the vendors less often, that is a convenience. Which you should pay for.
Pretty much. The game was tested for difficulty using no cash shop items. You can play on easy mode in PvE by opening your wallet if you want, but its not necessary and you are only ruining your own experience.
In PvP all those items are disabled, so its balanced and fun.
