Legacy or New server?

BadSpockBadSpock Member UncommonPosts: 7,979

Going to put a poll here to see if players, new and old, are going to play on a Legacy server or on one of the new Fresh servers?

I am on the fence - I want a good community more than anything.

Have any of you had problems running the benchmark on x64 windows 8? I can't seem to get it to work.... I click start and it comes up for one second with a tiny black screen closes and then goes back to the menu.

    No error codes whatsoever.

I play my MMOs like a lot of people do. You are there to provide the "world experience" for me, so I can chat if ever needed and just see people to know I got future group mates...but you aren't needed beyond a role in a future group I create.

So all in all the server doesn't really matter to me.

Probably sticking with the Unofficial Role Play server (Balmung) for it's community.  Likely Legacy as I don't really want to be mixed with the stereotypical influx of "WoW like players" (not that there's anything wrong with being this stereotype, just not something I want as this game is about the community for me) only wanting to power level to the end game and not partake of the community.  Things may be different regardless, but if you stay with your family you'll likely always feel at home (especially since that niche community feeling will always be there on the older servers).

When all is said and done, it will likely be the basis of how the community grew that will determine how it is.  The foundation of the new will be based on the above influx, whereas the old will be from the family environment.  Both servers will be on equal terms in a month's time or sooner so it's just a matter of considering the long term over the short for me.  Plus I intend to help quite a few new players if they start on my server as my linkshell and I typically did back in 1.0 servers when possible.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Going to have to be new server for me. I just enjoy a fresh start server wide on any new mmo I play.

Used to enjoy rolling a new Druid on the new servers in EQ when they would launch new ones the years following after launch. Think Rodcet Nife was the first new server after the initial launch ones.

I believe they're making an official RP server, so as long as there is a Legacy one, I'll be there. I have no reason to start over.

Im new and im leaning towards Legacy server.

Hopefully they make it obvious which server is which and why. That way all the "I want to start fresh" players will go to a New server and the Legacy newbie areas wont be as clogged. Dont really care for server first (ill probably be way behind any of them anyway) and even the actual Legacy players that join will be in other areas. The game might actually be playable on release night!

I kind of want to find a linkshell that is a mix of old and new players, and probably on a legacy server so it is already an "established" guild with friendly, helpful players.

I've heard a LOT of good things about the 1.x community, and would rather hook up with some of them then try and find a group of like minded players during the "rush" on new (fresh) servers.

Fresh server for me, kicking off the new version with everyone on equal footing. They gave some info about money being reduced on legacy servers so everyone is 'relatively' on the same footing, but i call bs on that, my old ls members had gajillions of monies and even if they take a zero or two off they'll be kicking off the new version stacked n ready.

    Always best to start fresh!

I was a part of a couple servers, and I have nothing but good things to say about just about everyone I met.  It's probably the first game whereby I acquired a sort of emotional attachment to the players instead of the game.  In addition to that, there was a sense of gloom and community togetherness that the last few patches brought since it was the end of the world, the meteor was in the sky, entering the atmosphere with lightning striking all around.  It actually felt like it was the end, especially since we'd likely not see each other for another six months at least (which it turned out to be more) or at all in case people don't come back for whatever reason.  It was probably the most unique Role Play experience I ever had, as there was no sense of hope and you were always fighting a losing battle (mobs invading towns and such) in addition to looking at the sky and seeing your future crash down on you.  The ending cinematic was also awesome and was an appropriate ending to the Grand Company storyline.

To me just about anyone who played the game after subscriptions were introduced were like a second family.  I saw a lot of people helping each other, and partook of such myself.  It had the "elite" crowd to be sure, but they were no where near as bad as some of the elitists of other games from what I knew of them.  Just mainly people that stuck in their groups and kept secrets of the game amongst each other so that they could finish things first and in quick, repeated sessions when new content came out.

There was a touching 2 hour video of people saying good bye that I saw once; most everyone was crying at the end as they said the personalized good byes to the entire linkshell and to their server.  I even considered joining them at some point since it was a great representation of what FFXIV was to a lot of people.  Some may dislike that Square released a lemon initially, but I'll always be thankful for the game that spawned such great people and a fantastic time.

Here's a quote from a FFXIV forum that I just remembered:

"It was really cool. Dalamud started as just a tiny red pixel in the sky. With each patch it got closer and closer. For regular players, they treated the approach as just new content, and motivation to prepare for what was ahead with 2.0. I found myself leveling all the combat jobs to 50 as fast as I could. Then with the last few months, I was able to take in what we were a part of. We were literally watching the end of our world as we knew it. To those that didn't RP, they truly missed out on some great emotions and stories that most gamers will never get to experience. During the last battle, I remember being gathered close with my friends, fighting as if we had no tomorrow. In the end, the haunting music, and feeling of impending doom were all we were left with til the server shut down. The last cutscene made me cry...

Oops! I mean...No big deal. You didn't miss out on nothing Smile"

Yeah.  It will likely be easier on established servers since there will be much less competition for items and more people willing to help out.  I'm getting enough of the "new player" thing during these phases and look forward to playing my old character.

There's just no reason for me to start over as the servers will be in the same place a month from now, and I would've just worked all over again for nothing (especially since I can't dedicate 18 hours a day to power game ahead of everyone else).   In addition to that, while the servers will be equal eventually (and then transfers will open up) the communities will likely never be even as the new servers will likely host a lot of "rush to the end and don't talk to anyone" type of gamers (which there is nothing wrong with) that are apart of similar communities elsewhere.  If nothing changes, I expect older servers to be more "mature" and community based as they were back when 1.0  was still up and running.

Some people just like the extra challenge of starting fresh.  Nothing wrong with that at all.  :)

Though with regards to the gil thing, I've met some very generous people in game that use their gil to make free equipment for just about anyone (I'm apart of a group that seeks new players out to give them free items and help).  There will likely be even richer people in new servers as power level crafters (and crafting linkshells) will pull ahead and dominate the market without any regulators trying to keep things fair for everyone.  Items (gear and resources) on new servers will then likely cost 10 times what they will on legacy servers as a result (especially at  start, once both servers settle in) since everyone will be bidding on the same items in limited quantity.  Getting AF Armor will also likely be easier on legacy as it's kind've a rite of passage to help others get their AF since someone helped you get your own (not to mention so many just enjoy helping others from what I've seen).

So if the deciding factor of the matter is just earning a lot of gil (or saving a lot of gil), then you'll be richer as a whole just joining an old server.  I just hope the new servers have a great community since so many different players from different games are joining and probably just want to focus on getting ahead or more powerful.

I'll be going Legacy.  I have a character with all DoW and DoM jobs at 50 plus a few capped crafting and gathering jobs.  Don't wanna lose that but I'll be making another character on the same server to experience the new content.

i bought the version 1.0 and played a short while but never subscribed. At the time i didnt have the money to pay the amount necessary to become legacy (when i played 1.0 the legacy offer was almost ending so i couldnt purchase a 3 month pack right away and become legacy).

With that said, im not going to pay 15 dollars to receive the same content other people get for 10 bucks for the same amount of time. Im looking forward to the game but i will wait and hope they offer another opportunity to become legacy. I put a lot of focus on making alts so the cheaper deal limited to 1 character is not for me. I will see how this turns out when the game launches and then decide.
