If given $100 million, you think you could produce a AAA mmo?

Slappy1Slappy1 Member Posts: 458

Just  a curious thought. We constantly discuss mmo's and what we want or expect from them.We have some pretty good idea's.

So if you were given $100 million buck's to put out a AAA mmo, what would your creation be?On top of that, what makes you believe it would sell?

Cmon peeps.don't hold back,let's see those idea's.

Some day I'm going to put a sword through your eye and out the back of your skull!

I would love to say "Yes, I could!" I even have an idea and outline drawn up and ready for presentation. But, the reality is, my idea is too niche and I have zero technical ability. Having no technical ability means I'd have to rely on the skills and honor of others to get the job done without being completely knocked out of the loop.

I would hire a director and writer from Hollywood for a good story and drama.

I would hire a Casino manager from Las Vegas so the game would have all the sounds and colors that people enjoy while gambling.

I would sell gold and bypass all the gold farmers.

I would make that game run on any ole computer from wal-mart.

I would make the game F2P

I would have an in game currancy that could be earned by either working for the company or other players.

Exp.  player ran mobs with a ladder  (for the PVP players)

Players as npc for chatting, setting prices and maybe giving quests.  (for the RP players)

Players that do chores that other players don't wont to do.  (for lazy crafters)

Out of curiosity, what type of mmo would you produce if you could.Sci Fi like Swtor/Sto or high fantasy?Or would it be a game like Marvel heroes/City of heroes/Champions Online?

    just curious.

I'd spend a couple of grand making an awesome website with some cool trailers and then spend $25 making some crappy f2p game with no content and buggy as shit. I'd call it neverwinter and then keep the rest.

I think by now a day standards i could easily develop a better game but 100 million is not enough to get the game where i would want it.

MY feeling is that to make a truly great game you need to figure out how to do it with limited memory and bandwidth restrictions. The cost of operating the game would be much higher  as well,so subscription fees would be a must.

I think the easiest way to make a game right now is to concentrate on making a great tool set, think along the lines of Neverwinter but a MUCH better product. This way the players can make a lot of the content, that saves the developer a lot of time and money. However unlike NW,you need to allow the players to import and export the material ,so they can work with it and make it better. In game assets are often cheap and thrown together much too quickly. You allow some really talented and dedicated gamer's to make that content and you will have a brilliant looking game.

You could start with the engine and the toolset, then before the game is even at Alpha stage, put it out there so players can start making content.Think along the lines of the Epic Games UDK toolset,it allows you to make anything you want for free, then if you want to retail your ideas Epic gets a cut.Only this idea all assets would belong to the developer, the fun would be you get to develop the content and see it in game.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Agreeing a bit with Storman up there. I have no real "ability" to make anything other than ideas. So , to a point I COULD make one, if I had the team to put it together. Though how successful would it be, that is another thing. I mean if it were my MMO, I"d make it difficult, but no "forced" grouping. Taking something from old, like EQ and something from new, like Rift - GW2  would be ideal for me. Tough enough to need help, but if I were smart about it, still being able to finish the quest given to me without having to wait 10 levels over it , making its reward useless.  The dynamics of the world events where anyone can jump in, get some experience I like, coupled with the "looking for a SOW for corpse run"  difficulty would give me a satisfactory level of fun with an mmo.  Too many times when I post I say the same thing, and this is no different, too many games now a days do not focus on the Massive Multi-Player part of the whole "MMO" thing that this site, and the games here are called.

People want quick , fast and now more than helping others with not just quests, but help in questions, ways to better their characters and the like.  Trust me I know, there are many that still do, but we all know since the creation of "WoW" .. there have been more children than adults.

On a side note as well, my RP servers would be strict and RP, you troll, name your toon "Osama Bin Bama" or some crap, you'd be kicked end of story.  That's just me :)

I think I could pick a team that could produce a AAA MMO. My part would be the money and an idea and that would be it though.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

WoW,I applaud you Wiz.This seems like something you've put some thinking into before.I have no doubt that given the proper funding and such, you could make a solid run at the prospect.Nice.

Most people on this forum couldn't produce a AAA MMO if it bit them on the arse. Sorry, it takes more than just saying, "I know better than everyone else.'

    I definitely couldn't.

$50 million I'd hand over to Disney for a Star Wars license

I'd use the remaining $50 million to produce a Star Wars MMO which deserves that IP

You have a point.I gave the $100 mill as a cap. You're correct in saying many mmo's in the last 5-10 yrs didn't cost that.

I'm just giving some breathing space,a cushion so to speak.Things like ,this seem to blow up as far as expenses nowadays.

Interesting concept, but the last War mmo bombed big time.

I would give it a shot. Working in the industry in the past I would first call Scott Hartsman, whom I worked with before and say, "I have an idea and $100 million to make an AAA MMO title. You have the reigns, lets do this.

Me personally?  not a chance.  But consider this.  The most massive and immersive MMORPG Everquest was made with less... and no game has compared to its depth to date.

I agree, but by todays standards a game like EQ would probably cost 60-100 mill to make. That's just the way things are now.The cost has risen.
