I rather liked the perma death in SWG. I would agree however that is is only viable as optional game play such as D3 has it.

Permadeath would work well in Neverwinter Nights 2 if I was roll playing like old school D&D.  The problem is MMOs are built so you will die.  Thats how you learn a boss fight and get better, thats how you learn what not to do.  Dying and recreating your character does nothing positive for a game, it just drives players away.

No one said it didnt ...it can be an option for people that prefer it though.  And there are variations that work for some ...  Im nto one of them but I can see this as a nitch as obviously supported by this game alone.

If PvE mobs could kill you and PvP was a ruleset on a server, I'd give it a go. But I'm not that interested in OWPvP games. And permadeath on top of that? Niche upon niche is what that is. Best of luck.

I've been playing Salem for quite a bit of time now. I have yet to die. The only way you lose your character permanently is by another player character. There are hundreds of ways to avoid player killers in this game. Especially if you play on the Roanoke server where being a criminal is one of the worst things you can be the strongest group only hunts criminals and are super helpful to the entire community of Roanoke. If you are interested in a sandbox crafting mmo this is a game for you. This is the first mmo since vanilla/bc wow that I haven't lost interest after 2 months of playing. It was really hard to learn from the start but once I grasped the general idea of things I've had a blast playing it. This game isn't for everyone, but it's at least a worth try. What do you seriously have to lose by trying it? It's not your typical watered down world of warcraft. Try something new stop being haters.

You are talking about the typical MMORPG, salem is not a typical mmorpg

There are no bosses who can permakill you, only players.

It's a crafting game, stupid example, but see it as a Settlers game, build your town, gather resources, interact, create fighters, fight & die, you keep your base & rebuild a character if it dies, keep farmers from not dying... instead of 1 person controlling all the units, you ARE a unit.

I like the notion of permadeath and everything else Salem stands for but when I tried Salem back about a year ago it was... like scraping my nuts against a cheese grinder... for me the thing which drove me away was the lack of ease in terms of controls and java in general doesn't like my laptop so it may be a long while still before I try the game again to see if it got better (either via control mods by players or better code for the game proper so it doesn't make my laptop look at me and ask if I am trying to run Metro Last Light in java).

Also OP you do no one any favours by being a wise ass towards Archage especially considering that the only thing that's missing from that game is permadeath.

The game can run badly on some setups indeed, to most issues is a fix though, try looking in the technical support forum.

About ArcheAge btw, I am also waiting on that game, and find it sad there is no permadeath option :)

Just delete your character and start over!  Every game can have a permadeath option if you play it that way.

Seems to me like the developers could have saved themselves a bunch of time by just making a Minecraft mod.

There's no real fix, my laptop has a fidgety GPU when it comes to Java, maybe after my next burnout of EVE I will come looking for Salem if DayZ Standalone isn't out by then :D.

I tried it a while ago.  I like the concept, but I couldn't get past the terrible camera controls.  I couldn't see what was in front of me.  Give me first person or 3rd person over the shoulder view.  It's also terribly ugly, but that's not an automatic game killer for me.

It's a bit boring but if you stick to it it's rewarding. That's my general take from the game. Create afew alts that specialize in one thing specific so if you do get killed you don't lose everything. It takes a bit of time and effort to get to the stage where you can build stuff such as a house etc hence why I said it was boring but you'll get rewarded for the time put it. Just make sure you aren't too close to someone elses homestead and you should be fine.

It takes a lot of effort to kill someone and you have to know what you are doing but if there is 5 people chasing you down for no reason then I can see how it would be a bit off putting. I'd reccomend to play it if you are a patient person.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

I was in the mood for a more sand box type game with good crafting.. I installed Vanguard.  Good camera control, very nice graphics for its age, and I'm enjoying all three paths of the game (crafting, adventuring, and diplomacy).  My ultimate goal is to build a nice house and make the furniture for it.  (making a carpenter)  And then maybe I'll make myself a boat.

Anyway..  don't have to settle for ugly graphics, terrible camera control, boring game play, and perma death.

ya know if candy gang really wants more people on Roa... you shouldnt lie about the development of salem.. and the fact paradox pulled out of publishing it recently and the devs are busy reinvigurating their 2.5d haven and hearth game instead of fixing their half ass pisspoor patchs they did recently to salem that killed 90% of the player pop.

3 servers that went from an avg of 100-150 people each at high time.. to barely 40 people each or 90 combined.. really says something doesnt it.

as much fun as the game is. the farming update and purity updates totally fubared the game's enjoyment now with worry about even more stupid purity/farming updates and gluttony updates that might even fubar that... no one wants to touch salem other then die hard fans.

i totally expect server merging or wipes at some point soon at this rate.

So? A game doesn't need WoW players to be successful. I'd rather have a well designed game that's unique and appeals to a niche than another mass market flop like Rift SWTOR and such.

The custom client has multiple camera options, have you tried it ?

First of all, you clearly didn't read the OP, because I explained what happened with Paradox ( - 1 for you )

Second, you know nothing John Sno' !!!! Get your facts straight before pulling stuff out of your ***, HnH is getting some love after 3 years, while they are working hard on Salem.

You are clearly one of those butthurt with the recent nerf, who probably has ragequitted because of 'imbalance' and is crying the end of the game now ...

actually i haven't quit. i just don't play 24/7 anymore as there is no point to it. Salem is in gaming terms dead. the sooner you clue in to that Alloin the sooner you would take your rose tinted glasses off and realize the population is not increasing.  hnh has never dropped under 200+ people playing it even if you exclude the bots people use in it and that is on a single map server.

Salem with its 3 servers barely sees 50 people per server  honestly if Salem was hosted by anyone else they would have pulled the plug on it a month ago. the very fact  the devs are only NOW working on HnH proves they fked up  development on Salem poorly and now have to spend months redoing it all.  this is exactly like end of nations in development terms. and that game is slowly becoming vapor ware.

try and insult me all you want it wont make anything you say have any more value then used toilet paper.

the people who want to play a perma death crafting mmo already are.. its called HnH the people who want to keep playing a game that most likely wont see development for a long as while.. well development that doesn't narf the fk out of it to the point of unplayable will keep playing Salem, im going to sit here and feed my hermit plot and wait for the server merge/wipes to come cause that is all Salem has left before its final nail is struck in the coffin.

whether you like it or not, the game at this point for CBers is boring and dead  only people who have never dealt with legacy humus or pre-#$#$# up patch 1.0 will find it even remotely fun, and id be shocked if they find it fun for longer then a week or two before they find out what they have to do for purity grinding..
