I think people overdo it a bit when talking about how hard EQ classic was.
Once you got into high levels, you got an exp ress. It didn't fully recover ALL The exp lost but really, it was not a big deal.
Recovering your corpse really wasn't a big deal either 99% of the time.
Necros, Mages, Enchanters, Wizards (jboots, quad kiting), Druids, and Shaman were good solo. Anyone that wasn't could certainly duo. 6 person groups were VERY often slower exp than either soloing or grouping with 1-2 other people.
It was harder than today, yes. But some here are making it out like if you set foot outside of the newbie area alone you will be corpse camped by dragons. Other than an initial learning period to become a mediocre player, it wasn't really bad at all.
Ahh yes the arrogance of the EQ players. The arrogance, fals though it may be, should have been beatin it out of you in EQ2. Looks like you need it again. In my opinion, this is a great example of how not to act towards people that may want to try the IP you currently play. In my opinion these types of players are the worst in any community. They enjoy creating divisions among the player base and that is a detriment to the community. Generalized terms used in many MMO's are popular, why? because most people understand what they mean. Funny to I have only ever run into the attitude from EQ players.
Word of advice: Get over yourselves. You aren't good gamers In my opinion and) from what I have witnessed, you are sub par on raid teams and usually have to be taught how to raid. Sorry if this is harsh, but these have been my experiences with EQ1 players.
Never played Everquest 2 as my roommate was beta testing it in one room and I was beta testing World of Warcraft and well it dawned on us pretty quickly which one was going to be the new MMORPG giant at that time.
Oh and btw Old Everquest players comprise alot of the veteran MMORPG players today and some of the best Raid players you will come across....as most of the World of Warcraft Raid content was developed by a few of them :P
You know what I find funny, when someone could lead 200+ people, and listen to the instructions of that one person perfectly. That was RR in DAOC. Needed to listen to that 1 person, or you most likely failed. Well OF DAOC anyways. I would say, majority of good raiders I ve ever played with came from that game, as they we re good at, and willing to listen to the leader.
Ya I experienced Realm Raids in Dark Age of Camelot as I was one of the primary scouts and sent out the message for help when a keep was being contested or overrun or an enemy realm was heading to our area to farm us near the zone in area which was quite often...
The best raiders and groupers imho are players who have alot of PvP experience in groups and raids as MOB AI has been trivial and too predictible and easy to overcome; yet opposing another group or raid of players is entirely a different story and if you don't have a well organized and prepared group or raid ya'll have failed even before you decided to go out together...
Port and gate really had two different meanings in EQ though. Gate was a self only port to your bind point for casters. Porting was the group teleport to wherever they could. Also missing were xlocs, the targetable wizard port.
Pretty funny thread though. Some people had to take a toungue in cheek post about the differences in game language between EQ and whatever else basically has come out and people can't take a joke or become internet tough guys talking down to them. It's a lighthearted look at it, ffs.
Played: EQ1 (10 Years), Guild Wars, Rift, TERA Tried: EQ2, Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Runes of Magic and countless others... Currently Playing: GW2
I've played EQ2 for 8 years and never heard the term "Gate". Most people say "call" due to the "Call of the Hero", "Call of the Tinkerer" and "Call of the Hero" being the most common personal travel spells. As in "wait, i'm gonna call to you" or "calling there now".
As for some of the other commenters... when someone gives a rundown of local lingo or terminology, it's generally considered as being helpful. I see absolutely nothing elitist about. Certainly if i decided that i want to start playing WoW or some other game i've not tried or decided to move to France, i would be appreciative of someone telling me what things are commonly referred to there. Sheesh people.. sensitive much?

Much of this came later in the game and your looking at this from a perspective that didn't exist back then and honestly I will say for a fact that not many would tolerated what existed in Early Everquest as yes I will say it, everything is carebear in comparison as I have experienced it and witnessed it firsthand. Everything today is a complete and utter joke in comparison to everquest at launch, period, hands down, end of story.
Anyone else getting tired of Easy Mode in MMORPGs cuz of all the incessant bitching, cries, whines, and moans over the years which changed a great number of different MMORPGs and be fortunate enough to pick one that didn't suck right from the start?
Bring back the harsh exp loss...and ya even a rezz wasn't enough, especially if it was multiple deaths and it got worse with each level and rightly so...
Your saying corpse runs were trivial? You obviously were not a part of early Everquest...ever accidentally fall in a dungeon and require a higher level and no one was around that could? ever lag out and you ran deep into a MOB infested area and died and couldn't hardly find your corpse, let alone retrieve it?
Soloing did get ridiculious some time later after Everquest was released and surely there were notable classes that had alot of notoriety soloing yet it was rather easy to run a train in their direction which you can't duplicate today unless they are performing AOE kills, which I seen in Everquest way back in the day because of pathing issues in certain dungeons and areas.
Gear was so subpar in comparison to leveling in early Everquest it was much more then obvious it was the central issue alot of players had a hard time leveling after a certain level even in decent groups. Gear was everything when it was obtainable which wasn't widely known in early Everquest.
The time sink involved in Leveling, Gearing, Raiding, Traveling, Camping Rares, etc...was so vastly greater in Everquest then anything else since it is hardly believeable by anyone today who wasn't there to experience it...Believe dat!
Speak from experience or you are easily discredited and disregarded, it is far better to say nothing at all then to say anything that isn't even remotely true
Actually EQ did have an off-line Tutorial that was a small enclosed space that they had just a basic how-to, swimming, ladders, targeting... and then it was done.
That little off-line tutorial gave folks all the data they needed to start their own EQ-EMU's.
And yes stepping outside the starter area could get you killed quick, East Commonlands the Griffin ... ring a bell or Northern Desert of Ro ... GIX!
Heck .. misclick in town and you could hit a guard or NPC and he'd wipe you out... Falling damage that Mattered !
/autofollow in any of the zones with steap feature could pound you toon to death..... hehehe
Perhaps the lack of actual noobs in games these days is a clear sign of how easy most of them are. A real noob is someone who is learning their class and all the game has to offer and if the game is vast and complicated this could take a while.
Being a noob for more than a week might surely be a sign the game is all its hyped up to be. We shall see.
Im hoping to be a noob for months

Port and gate really had two different meanings in EQ though. Gate was a self only port to your bind point for casters. Porting was the group teleport to wherever they could. Also missing were xlocs, the targetable wizard port.
Pretty funny thread though. Some people had to take a toungue in cheek post about the differences in game language between EQ and whatever else basically has come out and people can't take a joke or become internet tough guys talking down to them. It's a lighthearted look at it, ffs.
Gate was the name of the self only gate to bind for casters yes, but in general people used the term to mean they needed a gate somewhere or sometimes used GG (group gate).
I have not played any of the everquest games but I have been debating getting into this one, however I really hope that the attitude the OP has isn`t a sign of things to come in this game or an indicator of the community... it reminds me of grammar nazis

I've never heard that term used before like that in 6 years of playing EQ. Gate was always personal teleport to bind, Succor was the emergency group teleport to zone line, and "Port" was used for any group teleport to Spires / Rings. Also CoH (Call of Heroes) to teleport someone in zone with you to your position.

I 2nd the 'port' part, I played a wizard from start and I remember gate being used as will, when the shit hit the fan, some people would say "GATE" " and some would say "Succor".
I realy hope EqN can bring back some of what EQ1 was all about!

Now that you say that, I do remember hearing gate when shit did hit the fan. I played a warrior, so forgive me if I'm wrong on this, but I always assumed that the succor would start for the group and then anyone able to gate would since there was a much lower cast time on gate. More to get out who we can in case the succor doesn't go as planned and we have to help a few people get their corpses. Much easier if we can get one or two casters out on that CR if possible. Didn't even think about it just being a different term for the same thing.

Always "dual box" or hydra box multiple accounts if possible. The more accounts you have the less noob you'll look.
When you get people directions just give them the loc. If you don't know the locs memorize it. You should have at least 200 locs memorized to not be considered a noob.
If all else fails remember the most important rule: Always be an eltist jerk to people who never played the previous Everquest, because you did you are entitled to be an ass to people who didn't. If they demand any modern MMO feature that wasn't present in the original EQ or complain about the outdated features then make sure you go on a rant about how much better this is and how much more social the MMO is because of said feature.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Point was I don't think EQNext players should start acting high and mighty and belittling or immediately considering players "noobs" just because they didn't play the original EQ.
I am slightly confused by the list, I mean most of the time green is go and red is a no go?
Apart from that. I actually hope EQN can make me a noob again. I miss the feeling of everything being new, to actually learn to play again. To become lost.
Never played EQ as I considered Asheron's Call superior in every possible facet but I will be playing EQN but I will not kowtow to some archaic nomenclature or MMO slang talk when everyone and their mother understands what the X's in your post mean. Thanks but no dice here.

while im only on page 2 of this thread, i am thinking a few things.
1. Im tearing up remembering what a MMO was about. gawd i miss EQ1 (currently in EQ2 though).
2. This thread explains why EQ1 players hate late comers (i am in this boat)
3. hoping EQN revives all these thoughts, b/c YES I DO WANT THE NICHE, HARD CORE, ELITIST GAME I PLAYED BACK THEN
4. also, im laughing at half the references with fond memories.
if you are in EQ2 , come say HELLO on AB server, im deathusen a wood elf ranger who loves a good dungeon delve.
these were my favorite. i wholeheartedly agree.
