None of the people I have met playing Taru or Lalafell in FFXI or FFXIV have behaved like children. They were actually usually some of the more mature people I have met in mmorpgs.

    This drives me batty.

So basically, anything that has a small stature now is a " child " or a " sexualized image ". The TaruTaru or whatever FFXIV wants to call them now, are anything but that...

    ""

The Tarutaru are a race of skilled magic users who call Windurst their home. Although the Tarutaru physically resemble children, their size does not reflect their age. Masters of the magical arts, the Tarutaru have honed their abilities through dutiful study of the world around them.

Their dedication and hard work fueled the rapid reconstruction of Windurst after its destruction in the Crystal War. The Tarutaru enjoy a friendly relationship with the Mithra, who call Windurst their home as well.

The Tarutaru are the most skilled race when it comes to the use of magic. They originated from the Fauregandi Region from which they were eventually led to the Sarutabaruta Region which they now call home. They are the creators of the magical automatons known as Cardians. Tarutaru children are, in fact, smaller than the adults, but the entire race has child-like proportions compared to the other races. They are among the most dedicated, yet childish races of Vanadiel. They welcomed the Mithra into their home of Windurst at some point in history, and the two races have lived together in peace and harmony ever since. The only thing threatening that peace is a race of Beastmen that call themselves the Yagudo.

Tarutaru are unique in using a network of skilled mages for teleportation around their sprawling home, Windurst. Two brothers provide a similar service for the residents of Al Zahbi and Aht Urhgan Whitegate.

A Tarutaru in Lower Jeuno, Parike-Poranke uses a unique form of "Brown Magic" to remove food effects.

    ""

Try and do some research of their origin, and hell, even their date of creation instead of instantly jumping on this hate wagon of small like races.

They are on the same line as a gnome or a halfling from other games, EQ, LotRO, WoW .., which have never been ridiculed or hated on for the reasons you are stating OP.

Honestly, just get the eff over it. They are in the game, they are not a distraction nor are they some detriment. They are not trying to lure you into some sexual fantasy like other games, Tera .. Scarlet Blade ..

They added them because people do enjoy that race - was one of the most played races of FFXI in 2002, which was before this whole sexualization issue even became the norm.

Get over it. Don't play them, and stop complaining.

PS - All mammals have nipples.

    Get over it already.

Have enough white knights rushed to the defense yet? No? Alert SCARLET BLADE!

Yes, the op is ridiculous. It's also proving to be the most reliable troll topic this site has ever seen.

Tera was not even a year ago? SB was last month?

My god I love Final Fantasy from my play station days. Honestly if you do not appreciate manga, anime and these Japanese wonders. I feel sorry for your loss because this is part of their culture and boy do I love it. My husband once he started watching anime with me this after he met me began to appreciate it too. It is not what you are attributing this to. It's a cultural creation that you need to watch and read and enjoy to get it.

Playing computer games is childish. It's widely accepted now that adults play games but it is in fact the child in everyone of us that makes us play games. We just love to forget the every day troubles and immerse ourselves in a world we create in our minds. As children we can do that with 2 rocks, as adults we need video games because we lost some of that childhood magic.

There's nothing wrong with that...It's just not me.

Always loved that explanation. I love FFXI! Full of so much lore and colourful characters.

All games fetishize certain visual aspects. With most western-style games it tends to be "gritty," while with Asian games it tends to be bright, primary colors. WoW makes armor skins (particularly shoulder pieces) ridiculously exaggerated to the point of goofiness. Asian games tend to move heavily into anime territory, and child-like (especially little girl) characters are a well-established part of that genre. Some guys in my old dorm at college used to do a drinking game with shows like "Sailor Moon" where you had to take a drink every time a character flashed their panties.

Visual details can be a deal-breaker for some gamers. There is always the possibility that there is some visual element of the game that just dumps you right out of the immersion, and for some people that spoils the experience. If that is the case, it's good to pack up and move on. I, for one, am always appreciative when someone posts a game-breaker (for them) detail, because while often I scoff at the idea that this one thing would spoil the game, every once in a while I think "yeeeahhhhh....that's not gonna work for me either," and BOOM! I just saved the price of the game.

I, for one, found the Pandarens to be a visual/thematic deal-breaker for me with WoW. I understand a lot of people like them, and that's cool, it just wasn't for me. I forget what the game was, but I played one once where the male dwarfs were sturdy, near-Tolkeinesque, but the female dwarfs looked like 9 year old girls with boobs. The entire race looked like a pedophile convention. It was......weird.

I have to admit that I am disappointed FF XIV has taken the Asian aesthetic to this extent. But hey, if I want gritty, then ESO will probably satisfy my needs. If I want pretty, I'll log on LOTRO. If I want weird, I've got RIFT. If I want retro, I think DAOC is still on my rig. And if I want to scream in agony as I see assets worth thousands of real dollars go up in a puff of gorgeous pixels, EVE has me covered there.

I wouldn't call playing video games "childish," I would call it "child-like." The former has negative connotations of avoiding adult responsibilities and life, while the latter indicates a continued connection with what made childhood fun.
  • sketocafesketocafe Member UncommonPosts: 950
Oddly enough it was the westernization that got me to uninstall Tera. The little girl race was okay, but when I got to a quest giver who told me that it wasn't his first time at a rodeo, that was it.

For me it's not so much that it doesn't look unrealistic, of course these are fantasy games/settings, but these sorts of races  lack a sense of 'seriousness' that I prefer in my MMO's.

I cringe when humorous fluff is put into any game, from the snowball launchers in EVE, to the entire gnome race and their goofy gadgets in WOW.  I dislike seeing holiday events /decorations, particularly when St Nick or the Easter rabbit make appearances.

Heck, even in DAOC I completed Taj the other day and received a "baby" croc pet, which I cast once and after seeing it, won't be bringing that out again for a very long time.  Had they made it a full grown, 12 foot gator that bad boy would have been following me around some.

Same with the look of these races, I mean look at the one post with a full page of the one silly looking race (Tarutarus) and its many costumes (too much like the Ewoks in SWs, which I also disliked)...a total turn off for me that is hard to ignore, hence I've never been interested in any of the FF series.

So hey, other folks have different tastes than mine, who am I to tell them it's bad?

I know people like to go the "pedo" route every time a small race is talked about in an mmorpg. It should be noted that the Taru and Lalafell are not at all sexualised like you see in some other mmorpgs.

None of the male characters in FFXIV even have nipples. Its kinda creepy actually.

As for the lalafell, the guys even have facial hair. So they obviously aren't intended to be children. Same with halflings and dwarves.

What a silly thing to say. Children exist, and wars and conflict don't occur in a bubble where no children are allowed. While most would frown on actual violence to children being portrayed in games, to exclude children altogether is a bit silly.  Especially when so many people are clamouring for 'realism' and 'worlds' in MMOs.

Subjective: Can internet prudes stop trying to make every MMO fit their own morals and art styles!

It is just so stupid and unrealistic to see little babies riding on huge mounts and swinging huge swords. This looks like a very nice and good game but this character creation destroyed everything for me .I remember time from Tera when i came to one field and 10-15 little girls in miniskirts attacked me, damn that was so  retarded and stupid that  i deleted Tera at the same moment.

you mean to say "children given the body structure of adult". whether it is a child or a child given the body of an adult, it is still pedophilia, whether it is  chinese or japanese or korean or western developer, these characters are designed to attract pedophiles. in no way it is justifiable and that is why whether it is wow or eq or some eastern asian game; i always avoid playing characters like gnome or dwarf or halfling and/or character that are designed like this.

What on earth makes you think that people who play these races are sexually attracted to them? Are you sexually attracted to every character you make? I will be honest with you, I haven't been sexually attracted to any character I have ever played.  I am quite capable of keeping real life and video games separate because I am not a nutcase.

If you think paedophiles hang around in World of Warcraft dancing naked on letterboxes as a gnome, you should probably seek some psychological help.

I love it when someone comes up with an instant classic troll post like this. 5 stars. I was reading this thread thinking, this OP posts his opinion, always dangerous, and people are beating him up. I am about to quit reading the thread, and wham an instant classic appears. Thanks for the humor of the day.

No wonder MMOs keep failing their way to f2p with people like this around. As if the "OMG this is just like WoW because it has keybinds and quests!" quitters werent bad enough.

If a gnome/dwarf reminds of paedophilia then I don't know what to say really.  You must have some strange sense of what constitutes paedophilia.

Well said.  I am not a fan of Asian art style in MMO's nor the rainbow and puppy dogs color palate but like you said, that's their gig and all the more power to them.  I personally love the gritty, dirty and bleak feel to western MMO's.
