That's right.
Having really played the game, and not just briefly like
did (terrible screenshots, does not represent the game accurately, i.e. stop it) you'll find the world to be very beautiful and engaging.
uses more revealing, better quality photos. Not sure what that says about Robert's cred and his "first impressions" but I'm now inclined to raise an eyebrow before taking him seriously. Especially when he talks about the shift he wants the MMO genre to make. Apparently, it's inevitable. I guess with the help of sites like this it may be. But I digress.
Since Ryahl will be playing FFXIV, perhaps we should take his words with a grain of salt too. But a picture says a thousand words, and as mentioned earlier, his photos more accurately presents FFXIV in screenshot form.
Alas, to truly experience the game, no screenshot and writer can tell you what's good for you. I can tell you I am very much enjoying the game. No, that's an understatement. I am addicted to an open beta where I know my progression will wipe. It's that good, but see for yourself. Oh yeah, I'm PVPcentric, and for so many of you ill-informed, there will be PVP in this game.
Comments
I agree with you, I knew things were getting wiped but I kept going anyway.
I kind of softened the blow of that by starting in the two cities I won't be starting at at Launch so
Sorry, redcloud16, you're wrong. Let me tell you why you are wrong.
You don't agree with me, you agree with the game. You like the game and I like the game, therefore we agree on FFXIV ARR.
:P
You can only take so many screen shots before one of your hard drives are full.
xD
Though they don't help with the withdrawal all that much.
The game really sinks it's teeth into you once you get passed certain points and you just don't want to stop.
It isn't really a "I want to play feeling" rather than "If it was available, I'd be playing" feeling for me. Just a natural reflex to log in and try to accomplish something. It also isn't really excitement that the next phase is getting closer so much as it is just wanting... to do... something -- anything -- to get rid of that feeling like you're missing out on something by not playing. But everything just feels so dull by comparison.
The game is fantastic in my opinion, so glad I checked it out. I'm a sandbox fan at heart, but every once in a while a themepark comes along that I thoroughly enjoy... this is one of them.
Well hot damn I'm glad we all agree on something!
I know it's much more fun with drama and controversy!
The game is literally more of the same.
Same slow tab-targetting combat.
Same "kill X of Y" and FEDEX-type quests we've seen hundreds of times before.
Tiny zones, lots of load screens.
Dumbed-down, easy mode play at every turn.
It's pretty, but it's been done before, over, and over, and over again.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
lol yeah.
In fact you will continue to see this trend. As with all things.
Game from game, the next game keeps taking bits and pieces from other games. A little bit here, maybe a little there, and then wham!
It's revolutionary.
I'm sure you knew that though.
Agree i dont get what peoples see in this game that is so great ? For me it's the same old, same old.....
Yea... I hear this whole genre is a rip off of some old dice game a bunch of losers played in a basement.
Genre fail.
Yes, it's a game of the MMORPG genre. It does things that games of the MMORPG genre do.
If that's the type of criticism this game receives, its doing remarkably well.
Nothing revolutionary with this game at all.
The console limitations are still painfully obvious. Otherwise, it's the same simplistic themepark model we've been seeing for over a decade.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
By this logic you might as well just not play video games in general ever again...every shooter is the same old, every fighter is the same old, every racer is the same old, every jrpg/rpg is the same old, every rts is the same old, every turn based strategy is the same old.
That type of stagnation has been killing the genre - FFXIV is just another pallbearer.
Unless you haven't been paying attention, the repetition of this type of "same old, same old" is what many MMORPG players have been railing against for years.
Once we get past the manufactured hype, the dull sameness of this game is going to catch up with it quickly.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
he meant evolutionary.

It's not what an mmo does... it's how it does it.
1. Last night, I spent 30 minutes circling Ul'dah just to listen to the night music.
2. I started a fresh character on a new server and played for 5 hours just using the control pad. It was an amazing experience. I felt I was playing an FF RPG on a console. You really owe it to yourself to play this game, at least some of the time, using a gamepad. It's that fun and it opens up the game to experiencing it in a different way.
3. READ THE QUESTS! You heard me, yes this game has the type of quests you find in other games, but the writing is EXCELLENT. IT is funny as heck, you owe it to yourself to read it, and I am very happy you don't get a gigantic square/boxed text that you can press confirm and skip it.
Why do i think people should try this game, well it's polished. The ambiance and the world feels alive. The art design is beautiful. The music is the best I've heard in any game PERIOD (except for maybe Chrono Cross). If you're the type of person who just mmo hops and wants a shallow experience, dont' get this game. But if you want a game where you can progress at your own pace, where there is millions of DIFFERENT things to do, then you can call FFXIV home for many years.
I do not know too many games that will offer you this much content at release.
No game is for everyone. Some people will fail to see what's great in a game. That's fine. I have never played any Grand Theft Auto game, so I know what it's like when people rave over a game that you can't get into. But objectively speaking, this game has a lot of stuff to do and what it does offer is done exceptionally well.
I just want to take a stab at the F2P model.
For those of you who already know this model is targeted to your traditional gold/gil buyers, save yourself the time and do not read any further.
It's not rocket science. You'll spend more money on a F2P game, if not at first, then over time. The game is developed with the goal to entice you to do so, or you miss out.
Some people are willing to fork out big bucks for such advantages. They trade real life cash for virtual grandeur. I'm not judging them, but think about the kids, will you?!
Na I meant revolutionary.
When in fact the MMO genre as a whole is evolving, game by game.
It will be sold to you as "revolutionary".
To the above poster, it's a good thing ARR never said anything about being revolutionary, where other games have.
Wow that is funny because you guys share the same feeling i do,i was scurrying about doing everything, even though i know it is all wiped. That tells you there is a sort of addiction the game has to keep you wanting more.
The game does a lot of stuff weaker than FFXI,which would normally turn me off but the content is well represented and idk ,it just plays well and is sort of over whelming to keep you thinking.
I traveled from city to city and soon i entered a new city ,i smiled as the size and effort that went into each city is enormous.I was emoting players all over the game lol.I also raised several dead players, some seemed to have fallen asleep lol, guess they were so addicted as well that they fell asleep playing
It took me a few days to be able to move about freely,to easily understand the game but i am still lost in some areas,so lots more to learn.I did see some complaints but imo were just nit picking because they wanted to hate the game. The graphics are really good some complaints were ridiculous, especially if you see what other games are doing with graphics. Also no auto boot,i went afk for long periods, only my power down system screwed up my PC and game.
One thing i highly recommend for any new player is mining and all crafts and not sure if you can take up a new trade without registering to a guild or not, might be reason to start in UlDah.Plus i think currency is goign to be really tough to hold onto,so i don't want to be buying tools that i could get fro free doing the guild quests. Also you can easily run from UlDah to Gridania but Lominsa is barred by the Ferry which costs a lot of gil or takes time to get access another way.I think it took me about 20 minutes to run Gridania>UlDah with only a couple tough spots but i made it and didn't die,Fates can also pop up and make it tough.
Have not done any Retainer work yet,so not even sure how it works.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I couldn't agree more.
But it's not revolutionary.

I also agree with this.
But look at what he was talking about, listening to the music, reading the quests...
There are people who just want to get in their and do things that they like that involve more active participation and dont' really enjoy the somewhat more passive pleasures such as just "being" in the space, traveling from area to area, noting how the environment is made, etc.
Let alone reading the quests as opposed to just grabbing 5 of them so they can kill 10 of something and run back.

As I put in another writing, you can always tell how far someone got in the game -- or the amount of time they tried it -- whenever they cite "x" quests. These are quite literally done away with fairly early on, and have ample context for the early tutorial quests that do have this.
It's a sad thing I've seen in that many people who say these same things to me in the past also eventually admit to only playing up to level 5 or 7 in game (though if reading a lot of text isn't your thing, then that's ample reason to just quit early). Kind've depressing to know this is how low our playerbase has sunk with this Genre as a whole in how we approach new things and with no fingers pointed towards anyone in particular (as I'm guilty of it myself in the past).
We definitely need a wave of new blood to revitalize things. Though with regards to this game, you can't even see it's soul until around level 20 or so with the storyquests finished and multiple systems unlocked.
