I wont quote because that might make people using IE run out of memory.
However, many seem to assume I only logged a few hours then uninstalled.
What actually happened was that I got to level 30 and asked myself if I was having fun. The answer was no. Then I thought about the why's and the most obvious reason was that I had already played this game before, but it had a different name. If I want to be told a story, I'll TUEBL a book, but when I play a game I want to play one. I dont want to have to go through lines and lines of text. I played the GW2 story and skipped everything and still understood what was happening. So the story is a non-issue for me, but in that game, it slows me down. Then I fight, oh 3 second GCD, just sit there and wait pal. So not only is it not innovative, but it refuses to let me play my way. There is no fun, but there is great thought on how to make people go slow since in their minds, it might land them a few extra monthly payments.
When you say I am attempting to speak for a majority, that is not the intent. The intent was to relate to the majority who are not playing anything right now because they want something new, which I simply do not see in this game. Sure classes have their own flashy skills and such, but we really can't trust a company to actually deliver post-release. What you see is what you get. Sure some of those classes sound interesting, but ultimately, their play style will be the same as in any other game. Rdps, Mdps, Healer or Tank. I dont really play classes based on the skin they slap on it.
Now about innovation. For the most part, you are correct, especially when you bring up innovation for the sake of innovation. However, to me that sounds like defending a bad decision by inserting the term "innovation". Innovation really needs to highlight a vision. It must put a vision forward, not just be there out of nowhere. That is why sometimes some innovations have been seen before and are still considered innovations. Because they bring the genre forward.
GW2 had a vision to make people feel like they were part of the world.
WoW had a vision of freedom.
Sure WoW took a lot from other games, but they made everything come together, it was innovative because it fit the vision of player freedom. If you wanted to jump from a flying ship, you could, sure unless your class had a gimmick to survive you'd die, but you still could. In fact, players seem to leave as they take away some of that freedom in order to ease their pvp balancing, for example, or to force people down specific trees, because its not a 10 dps difference now, its 10000. I am convinced that is part of the issue they have with people leaving.
Also, challenge cannot be a serious element to a final fantasy game. I sincerely hope they don't consider their games challenging, although it seems "this is not an MMO but it plays like one" but it is to them "a Final Fantasy game that will charge the same price as MMOs do". Also, the first three are the same thing. As for refinement, given their actual actions, it seems to mean that they are making small changes to improve on what they have. Its really an empty word when its followed by change. Refinement involves small changes, change can be small changes or big ones, so why not just use change instead?
But the single biggest point I want to correct is that I do NOT think the game will fail. Maybe out of hope, but what I think is that it will not be a success. It will only be a shell of what it could have been. Good enough for their following, but not good enough for those on the outside looking in.
You are preaching to the Yoshi P cheerleader squad.
People capable of looking the game objectively aren't wanted.
Crafting was turned in to an end game mop up session for detailing your NPC reward gear much like Tera crafting is.
Leveling is a paint by numbers 'do this quest now' session. One I think will blow up in their face when people get their first 50 and find out they still suck and have no quests to plow through the other 17 50's.
I still think it's one of the prettiest games out there. Races are unique, gear is unique, emotes are elegant. I think they might have thrown the baby out with the bathwater though.
Don't throw out crafting yet, evidently it's going to be a part of front line, maintaining the seiges. Can't wait to see it.

This is worth clarifying.
I do play for the story, I do not want to read one. Part of the reason to play is to actually make your own story. I want the story to be shown to me through game play. I've rarely read stories and good games still let you know what is going on through the game play alone. I skipped all of GW2 personal story, yet I still understood it because it was mainly told through game play. Would you pay 15$ per month for a book?

Boycotting EA. Why? They suck, even moreso since 2008.
When did Innovation = Fun, Innovation (something new) is just a marketing term to pull you in some feature they have. They just slap that name on anything now, kinda like nextgen graphics. Doesn't mean anything to me.
So many games stick to the old mechanics that work very well. FPS, RPG, MMO, RTS among so many others, use the same mechanics in a lot of these games. Most of the times, it's the polish and the content that make it fun. If a game has a impelling story and content that is fun and engaging, with polished and smooth gameplay (combat, movement, etc...) then everything should just flow together and simply be fun. There are few times where something "innovated" makes the game interesting, but not always fun.
So whenever I see something innovated, it just makes me very cautious that it might be a gimmick.

Well folks I think we just figured Neo out with this last post of his.
He has Attention deficit disorder.
He doesn't want to read anything while playing a video game. He wanted everything showed to him through Gameplay and CGs.
He doesn't want a global cooldown timer to slow his gameplay.
Neo, I don't have A.D.D. I enjoy the beautiful environment in FFXIV. I enjoy planning out the perfect strategy before a battle and executing it flawlessly. Of course I enjoy movies like Amelie, a film im betting you couldn't sit through the first 20 minutes of.
Neo you have missed the entire point of an mmo. Its not to have fun playing solo. Or to have fun exploring. The point of an mmo is to conquer and make memories side by side with your friends. That's what makes them fun. Wow and GW2 destroyed that element. Which is why most people don't play those games for long periods of time.
I started playing FFXI because my buddy invited me. I played it for 5 years. Even remaining after my buddy left because that game forced me to make many new friends.
I started Wow because another buddy invited me. I left because that buddy went to SWTOR. Wow never implemented anything to make me invest in new friendships
I went to SWTOR because my buddy from Wow invited me. He even payed for the disk. I left because it sucked.
I went to GW2 because a 3rd buddy invited me. I left because it was an empty game with no soul.
Meanwhile all my old friends from FFXI are discussing which server we are going to on FFXIV. A good 15 of us.
Developing friendships in a fun well crafted and challenging environment is what gives mmos long life. FFXIV unlike some of my previous mmos will do this.
What actually happened was that I got to level 30 and asked myself if I was having fun. The answer was no. Then I thought about the why's and the most obvious reason was that I had already played this game before, but it had a different name. I know the feeling and am sorry you didn't enjoy yourself. I was lucky enough to be able to play the beta with friends, and, like any MMO, the experience was greatly enhanced by doing so. Have you considered your experience in this light?
I understand don't appreciate having to go through a lot of text, though this is arguably one of the more streamlined games when it comes to that - most MMOs give you a wall of text for each quests, it's just that most people don't read it. However, if you wanted to really experience a story worries of being 'slowed down' are a little suspicious. Quite frankly, that makes it sound more like you want to skip any story element that doesn't involve combat gameplay...
I don't know what you mean by playing 'your way' - apparently your way means a shorter, or no GCD? Btw, the GCD is 2.5 seconds, and will be under 2.0 seconds by 50, according to the beta forums. I'm betting 'your way' meant a lot more than the GCD though.
Your last comment is downright unfair - I don't think I need to explain why.
Not sure what you're talking about here - could you clarify? If you are sick of trinity games, I understand; but it's a tried and tested model that people still enjoy, so it's a stretch to say that will keep the game from being great.
And you're saying they have no vision for this game? Why? Who said they were especially concerned (and why should they be) with 'bringing the genre forward' anyway? Perhaps they just want to bring together MMO fans, FFXI fans, general FF fans, and those who have never been any of the above in one community to enjoy playing in a final fantasy universe (this was more or less the stated vision of the original version, though they failed to carry it out).
Also, challenge cannot be a serious element to a final fantasy game. I sincerely hope they don't consider their games challenging, although it seems "this is not an MMO but it plays like one" but it is to them "a Final Fantasy game that will charge the same price as MMOs do". Its really an empty word when its followed by change. Refinement involves small changes, change can be small changes or big ones, so why not just use change instead?
This doesn't align with my experience of earlier FF games - especially FFXI and prior. There was challenge. Not sure where those 'quotes' are coming from? Frankly I can't really make out what you are saying with the rest of that paragraph?
But the single biggest point I want to correct is that I do NOT think the game will fail. Maybe out of hope, but what I think is that it will not be a success. It will only be a shell of what it could have been. Good enough for their following, but not good enough for those on the outside looking in.
So you've placed everyone who likes what they've seen of the game as 'their following', while everyone else is apparently on 'the outside looking in', whatever that should mean. I suppose nothing I say will convince you that, for example, I like the game, plan to play, and think it will fulfill my expectations, yet I am no blindly following fanboy? Perhaps it's just that I'm not expecting the next paradigm-shift in the mmo genre; I just want a game to enjoy with my friends with solid systems and a world we can all appreciate (we all happen to enjoy the final fantasy franchise). If this is not that for you, then I hope you find it.
Just another armchair developer who thinks their personal taste means something. Probably came here after your opinion was utterly rejected over at the beta forums. Sorry the game isn't like ffxi. Nothing could assure this games failure more then turning it into a remake of ffxi.

Ugh... neo all you you've down is throw around baseless assumptions and opinions with laughable comparisons. Also you're playing the wrong genre if you don't like to read text...
Man I think the MMORPG (not this site... well... maybe a little) crowd is one of the most toxic, vile communities I have ever run across. I have never seen people so obsessed with "innovation" than any other genre. Some people fail to realize that what makes a game great is the mix of all of its parts to create an enjoyable playing experience.... and this game seems to have nailed that part down.
But like Yoshi-p said, you can't please everyone. If this game is not for you then I hope you find one that suits your taste. I, like many others have found it in ARR.
If you want a game that is "build your own story" that is not an RPG.
An RPG is a game where you assume a role. Hence the name. If you want to play your own story then that is its own game, and it's own genre. Enjoy playing that, its not an RPG though.
In each FF game i played ( played them all from start to finish) the story was the main reason to play. Some FF where better then others, in main chars or villains or sad scene's that you remember years after playing it (Aeris death).
FF ARR has put in a great story and the only text i rush trough is some of the side quests that doesnt seem interesting enough to read. Story quest on the other hand are beast, and extremely well done.
So i think from what i have seen so far the RPG element is solid enough to keep me entertaint. The people i came across where helpfull, totaly diffrent then most other mmo's who seem to have 50% troll investation (like the OP and his crystal ball).
I am sure no FF fan here on these boards has ever claimed this mmo is going to be the best mmo ever created, they will tell you that SE create a very special mmo in a final fantasy setting. You have to dig that, if you cant well FF is not for you and yo dont even have to come on FF forums to convince FF fans this mmo will be a flop -_-
So all trolls and haters can cry themselves to sleep as we dont care about your prediction if this game is going to detrhone WoW. We dont fucking care, we just wanne play a good mmo with ff setting.
Why are you all arguing about this. It is still an untested premise no amount of arguing will decide the future. Why do you let these arguments upset you . Just enjoy the game and enjoy it as long as it lasts. Getting upset that others do not like your game or share your vision does nothing but diminish your own enjoyment because as you argue the points you get weary and soon the defense of the game becomes the focus and not the game itself. That is not the objective of playing and discovering a game.
I think SE missed their time in the spotlight years ago at the very first ffxiv release. They certainly DO NOT have as much steam and traction pulling off this time around. This I think is not only due to them missing the first shot, but with great p2p games now going f2p such as Aion, GW2 and even WoW gives you f2p until lvl 20; I think it's going to hurt them. Not kill em, just hurt em a little.
With that said, I still intend to try out as many more of the beta weekends as I can before pre-ordering my collectors edition. FFXI was the mmo of all mmo's for me. FFXI started me off playing mmo's to begin with (before that I only played civilization III lol) and no matter what game I've played since then I've NEVER had that kind of experience with a game no matter how fun. So far I can say FFXIV is not going to give me that feeling that FFXI gave me but I'm hoping I get a surprise because like I said, I'm a fan.
I loathe the game. Ive been trying the beta each weekend and each time come away with so many things I don't like about the game. I find the story nonsensical, the lack of spoken dialogue aggravating, the quests mechanics are fetch based and old, and the hot bar combat archaic.
I've tried to like it as I have friends that enjoy it, but it doesn't appeal to me at all.
People keep saying mmorpg players "want somethign new"
I dont !!!!!!!!!!! i been playing them for over 10 years and its the new mmorpgs that i find crap gw2 (no trinity) CRAP it didnt work, age of conan crap crap crap crap Tera crap crap crap neverwinter crap crap crap swtor crap crap crap Rift (wasnt too bad but got boring) .
everytime a new mmorpg comes out people end up going back to their original mmorpg that they left usually wow but then they quit it again because now it has changed and is basicly something different to what it once was aka its crap now.
people want the old not the new make a mmorpg that requires braincells and none of that flyign combat , teleporting to dungeons instantly bullshit, worlds are supposed to be immersive , how is teleporting everywhere gonna help to do that.
i think mmorpgs need to take a step back and stop trying to be new and cater to noobs that play the games like a singleplayer game and burn through all content after 5 mins and then move on to teh next mmorpg.
You lost me at 'crap'.
AOC has holy trinity, so does Tera, Rift and NW and SWTOR. All these MMOS just like FFXIV ARR had some new things added to them but over all they were following the same tried and tested themepark formula. So i find it ironic you call all these MMOS crap and then write 'i don't want something new'.
So you think in order to not be a crap game, all a studio has to do is have the holy trinity and "some new things added to them".
No wonder so many crappy MMO's are released these days. You people have no standards.
I think Duke Nukem had lots of standard FPS "mechanics" and "some new things" I guess that means it was a pretty good game after all. Because you know "some new things" are all that matters to real gamers.
I agree and with the OP. I don't think the game will be very successful beyond it's core base. And with Square Enix in such financial peril they will need to be..I think the game will struggle to appeal to westerners...for the following reasons.
1. The initial 60 min of gameplay =there is none. I give the game props for the character creation system, it has lots of options. That's cool. The graphics have a nice fidelity to them as well. But once the luster of that has worn off reality sets in and its 60+ min before you actually get to play the game.
An hour minimum of boring text based only clicky conversations (more on that in a minute) that makes no sense and has absolutely nothing to do with the story, your character or the world. Three starting areas and they all take an hour just to get to, all of them talking to some guy in cart/carriage about nothing.
The initial introduction is nonsensical. Many will quit because or boredom. Once in town the get started stuff is so slow and boring its sleep inducing. Fetch quests galore, use the emote system to dance and after another 30 min of mindless fedex courier stuff you get to kill some lady bugs. Yipee!
2. No Voice acting. Talk about a game that looks like a 2013 game but sounds like one from 1999. WoW had more spoken dialogue than this game at its launch in 2004 and so did every other game released since then. For a game today to not even have NPCs say hello or have some sort of canned response when you click on them is shameful. And the amount of mindless text you have to click through or god forbid actually read - hmph, no one will do that.
I've heard they may add voice acting for the later story missions, but even that given the expansiveness of this feature found in all other MMOs today makes FFXIV seem lost in time.
3. HOT BAR games are so 2005. Click, watch animation, wait for global cool down, click, click, rinse repeat. With games like GW2 and Neverwinter paving the way for fluid gameplay in MMOs Western based players will see FFXIV combat as old school, and not in a good way.
4. For me, well It's still too -- well FF-ish. Yep. I get it, for the fanboys they love it. The everyone looks like fairies and the effects are all outlandish is a good thing. Monsters sitting beside Pokemons and killing fuzzy lady bugs are cool. For me and I suspect many other westerners, well it's not. It is odd, goofy and well it bit off putting. The dialogue and writing are obviously translations and don't make sense all the time. I appreciate their efforts to Westernize it, but they didn't do enough of it.
5. All of these reasons combine to make a very strange and boring combination, and one that most folks not already SOLD on FF will throw away like a bad Jet Li film.
Again, I'm not here to be critical. I've tried the beta, tried all the initial classes to 20 at least and cant bring myself to play it anymore.
Do beta testers not read forums anymore? It's been stated a lot of times that the main storyline is voiced (just not in beta). And, imo is a pretty shallow reason to think a game won't be successful since SWTOR was fully voiced over.
I agree and with the OP. I don't think the game will be very successful beyond it's core base. And with Square Enix in such financial peril they will need to be..I think the game will struggle to appeal to westerners...for the following reasons.
Conjecture.
1. The initial 60 min of gameplay =there is none. I give the game props for the character creation system, it has lots of options. That's cool. The graphics have a nice fidelity to them as well. But once the luster of that has worn off reality sets in and its 60+ min before you actually get to play the game.
If you sat there and stared at your screen or wnet AFK for a few minutes between every dialog bubble or cut-scene, sure it could take that long. Didn't take even nearly that long for me, and I'm pretty sure the intro I went through was the same as, or similar to, the one you did.
In other words: Stop exaggerating. There are plenty of others who know better, and who can and will call you out on it.
The initial introduction is nonsensical. Many will quit because or boredom. Once in town the get started stuff is so slow and boring its sleep inducing. Fetch quests galore, use the emote system to dance and after another 30 min of mindless fedex courier stuff you get to kill some lady bugs. Yipee!
Conjecture, exaggeration and a bit of conflating personal opinion with fact.

There will be voice acting for all the major story missions starting from the beginning. It's not implemented in Beta. This has been announced and known for months now. Before you start spouting off statements as "fact", make sure you know what you've got your information straight.
3. HOT BAR games are so 2005. Click, watch animation, wait for global cool down, click, click, rinse repeat. With games like GW2 and Neverwinter paving the way for fluid gameplay in MMOs Western based players will see FFXIV combat as old school, and not in a good way.

Posts a tirade ripping the game apart, then concludes by saying he's not here to be critical...
... ooooookay.
What's your character name, and what server are you on? I'd like to see your "all initial classes to 20"
I find it funny that people on this site seems to think Final Fantasy franchise is a niche in NA. Every article on the topic of most popular franchise i read final fantasy is in the top 10, on IGN a western gaming site its in 3rd place from mario and zelda. And when it comes to sales of copies the NA sales are almost as much as the Japanese sales for each title in the series especially the ones after FF7. And when it comes to companies SE is also in the top 10 of the richest video game companies.
Even if fans were the only ones to play XIV that alone would make it a success as this franchise is one of the most sold IPs in gaming history. The mistake people do on this site is comparing Japanese games to Korean games, its like comparing fast food to fine dining.

"Fallacies! You speak fallacies! It's just beta, the game gets better!"
They always say that to lie to themselves.. Now most of those fanboys defending SWTOR on those beta forums probably quit the game.

F2P may be the way of the future, but ya know they dont make them like they used to Proper Grammer & spelling are extra, corrections will be LOL at.

^^ THIS is what the OP should have written instead of trying to argue/convince everyone why it is that the game will not be a success (and attempting to speak for everyone else as well)!
cheers, mate...i can understand and respect your opinion, even if i do not share it personally.
Sorry but this game won't be a success. It's just another generic WoW clone that want's to take a percentage of it's subs and will either die or go F2P after a year of release. Played the beta for around two days, the questing was some of the most generic shit i've ever played.
Just like SWTOR.
Edit: and to the mods, just because my post doesn't praise your delicious mmorpg "god" does not mean the post is trolling.

I'm going to look in the same crystal ball you did to predict this.
It's telling me you wish FFXIV was a polished shiny new version of old FFXI, and you are sad it is not.
I'm sorry OP, but get over it. We've had this discussion. Move on.
Why FFXIV won't be a success? ...........
Because the OP said so. hail to the OP because he knows more than everyone else.
Ugh... neo all you you've down is throw around baseless assumptions and opinions with laughable comparisons.
We dont fucking care, we just wanne play a good mmo with ff setting.
o/
This horse is now a soupy mixture of organic mush.
I've tried to like it as I have friends that enjoy it, but it doesn't appeal to me at all.
err re-read
Kind of funny, the SWTOR fanboys were mad at anyone who dissed "their game" on the beta forums
"Fallacies! You speak fallacies! It's just beta, the game gets better!"
They always say that to lie to themselves.. Now most of those fanboys defending SWTOR on those beta forums probably quit the game.
but no one is saying it just beta it gets better people are saying its already better.
F2P may be the way of the future, but ya know they dont make them like they used to
Proper Grammer & spelling are extra, corrections will be LOL at.
Seriously get over yourselves.
