This has to be my biggest pet peeve that has developed in recent MMOs such as : SWTOR, Rift, and WoW (modern wow). I mean its BUTTON MANIA. Half your screen is dedicated to buttons that really don't do anything. SWTOR's Sentinel class for example: I only reached 48 but already my sentinel had a 9-11 button priority list w/ an auto attack proc that could proc an ability that if crit procced another ability. Don't even get me started on RIfts button fascination.
I don't care about a few cooldowns here or there or some utility spells; but the leave the combat simple, 4-5 buttons max. Make one class that is just button mania because some people like that, NOT ALL OF THEM.
BEGIN RUN ON SENTENCE
I don't want to be watching for procs that lead to procs while some DoT ticks down and needs to be refreshed, but none of my abilities automatically do that; no I need to hit another pointless button to refresh the stacks inbetween ONLY IF my other DoT ,which is better, is on cooldown. And what the hell lets add combo points in there too.
Make abilities mean something. Reread that. There shouldn't be abilities that have prereqs such as dot's or procs that only do 10% more damage than some standard ability. If you are going to have procs and requirements then make it hit HARD, like how WoW's Warrior Overpower used to hit, or that big Eviscerate crit on a Rogue that melted health.
Why were WoW and EQ and DAoC such popular games that we all still dream about? They were really fundamentally simple. You didn't need 100 different damage buttons to do max damage, you needed: other players, common sense, and timing.
I'm not talking 11121112111211312 simple, but for the love of god people THESE GAMES AREN'T FUN TO PLAY FOR A REASON THAT'S WHY WERE ARE HERE.
I like what ESO is doing with the way combat works, No Cool downs lets you focus on combat and not on when your button is ready to press. If you are allowed to add in audio indicators like " mana/stamina at 50% 30% ect..." then the game would let you focus almost 100% on what is going on instead of glancing down at your hot keys waiting for them to come off GCD which takes away from the experience. IMO it takes more work and skill to etch in your mind which keys are bound and make it a reaction rather then a click...This the player the potential to be superior in combat due to skill rather then chance or from simplicity of the game.

Not all games have a GCD (Global Cool Down), in EQ2 there is sort of a GCD (0.5 sec) but this can be reduced by half and with button queueing is largely ignored. As to the rest of the rant it is about Combat Systems and not buttons.
Buttons are "affordances" little things on the screen that provide shortcuts, if you want a lot of them so you can create shortcuts for all sorts of things (even if every one else in the world thinks you are crazy for doing it) it is your choice only you can see it unless you make a You Tube Video or take a screen shot and show the world.
For those that want only a few buttons turn off the button bars! If you do not use them do not display them. It is just that easy.

Having a limited amount of buttons to press is also away to test ones ability to deal with what they have, some will like it some will hate it but everyone will adapt. I played Neverwinter for a little while and loved the combat and I would be still playing the game if the company running the game wasnt a bunch of thieves. I felt like I almost never had to look at my icons to make sure everything is ready to hit. rift let you bunch almost everything in to one or 2 keys which is even more boring then watching keys, they might as well take away the need to make macros and just set it up so you can do everything with one button. I like the thought of having to know my resources rather then watch keys and waiting for cool downs.
People the would QQ might enjoy the simple systems or are afraid of change, might be a little of both but either way people will learn to play or quit nothing new here. I played beta for FFxi and couldnt stand that style of game play anymore.

I hate ability/spell queuing with a passion, primarily because it takes away a sense of realism plus it makes it a lot easier for botters an d macroers to game the system. I also dislike how it interferes with my personal play style of button mashing to be able to fire off a spell as soon as the game allows me too. Say I want to press a skill, I normally hit the button 3-4 times to insure it goes off. This is a force of habit and one I'll likely never break. Besides if one was to actually pay attention to voice chat you'll here a lot of people do the same thing.
