Lets not kid our selves especially on this site. The art could of looked like the image below and people would be defending it due to it's sandbox nature.
its.... its... a fighter wizard... that can summon armor and weapons when the need arises
Still waiting to find out what the actual game is. Until I see some gameplay, and a features list, what the hell do I care what the graphics look like? The game may be awsome, or it may suck terribly, but the art style wont effect that decision for me.
Art is just art ( im not talking animations, those could still effect if the game sucks), its just something to look at, and I couldnt care less whether its realistic, cartoony, jumped up stick figures or any other style, if the gameplay is there, I will play. If its not, it doesnt really matter what it looks like, if its not fun to play.
I wouldn't exactly say the art decreased my excitement for the game. We do not yet know with certainty how the game will actually look. And the art has no bearing on my opinion of the game itself when it comes out. So I still have an open mind.
BUT I will say that it increased my skepticism about the reveal. I am now a little more worried they may not have made all the right choices.
Yes, I'm completely turned off by cartoony characters in an MMO.
I don't actually mind them in certain games, I love Jet Set Radio for example.
But in a high-fantasy MMO, no, I don't want to run around with 200 pound shoulderpads and lightsaber weapons, please. I am not 5 anymore.
I am not touching the game with a 10 foot pole if I look anywhere close to this preschooler character.
It could be the most amazing game with the most amazing gameplay, how the world and characters look matters. I want to look the part when I play Everquest, whoever came up with the bogus idea to introduce those shoulderpads that look like landing strips in EQNext should be fired.

I agree. What bothers me is that the artwork isn't very original. It follows in the same style as the cheap MMOs we have seen over the past few years. It doesn't capture what EQ is , or is in my opinion at least.

Right, which is extremely ironic since they have been going on and on about how this game would be the new revolution in MMO which would set it apart from the rest of the pack.
Apparently they didn't inform the art department of this idea, since those artworks and that in-game model look like it was pulled straight from WoW.
And like you said, it doesn't fit the world of Norrath at all.
If the concept are would have been perfect by whatever standard you like, would it sell you the game? It wouldn't be gameplay so it's not that important. That being said, I thought it was a bad presentation.

It is so ironic. Why would they want their concept art to look just like WoW?
Just look at FV and her giant bow and sword. Those two items look the most like WoW. And that giant hammer. And the shoulder pads. And the cartoony style.
It is so disappointing, because EQ has always drawn the more mature crowd. How is this new art revolutionary? Those giant ridiculous weapons are a huge step to nowhere. We are in the same place visually.

Uh... no. If they had revealed art that actually looked good, it would have increased my hype. Say, if they had released this for example.
but instead all the concept and video leaks, as well as the art, points this to be an EXTREMELY cartoony whacky zany not too serious game. We already have a game that covers that style, World of Warcraft, and EQNext was supposed to be everything WOW wasn't.

The first thing I thought of oh god, please don't use the WoW art style. I hate WoWs art style and if EQN uses it, I may well pass. Even cheap ass computers can run more demanding games these days.
For all the WoW bashing that goes on around here people seem to forget it has held the #1 MMO title for what the last decade?
I do not play WoW (I did for about 7 years). I quit because it became old and repetitive. Boring even. I do not like the game any longer so I am no wow fanboi. What I am though is realistic, Taking the art style of a game that at one point held over 10 million subscribers is not a bad business idea. I mean if that many people can play a game with that style of graphics for so long, then obviously it isn't that bad. If I were the CEO of a gaming company and I needed to make a game that was easy to draw, easy to upkeep, and reduced poly count resources so I could make my game larger with more content then I would.
People fail to realize even to this day that games are just that games... They aren't meant to alter your reality or perception of space time. This isn't .hack we can't live in a world online that isn't our own yet. I feel like most people are wanting games to be like the movie Surrogates. Where you have IV's connected and piss in a bag so you can escape whatever boring meaningless life you have to be enveloped in a game to the point of realism. Fortunately for society this hasn't happened yet, nor do I hope it ever does.
Who gives a shit really what art style EQN has, its a game, hell the more cartoon based the better I say, maybe it will prevent another epidemic of retarded monkey baby EQ players leaving their kids in cribs for 2 weeks without food or milk until they die this time around.
Such a stupid thread and argument to even worry about something as miniscule as art. It is what it is.

Exactly.
Artwork like ^this^ would have been a huge hype. There are so many new directions you can take that style. There are countless options for FV. Keep the right proportions, classiness, elegance. EverQuest is known for this style.

Justin Bieber has the #1 selling record. I assume you're a big fan?
Out of everything I said, some lame ass Justin Bieber comment was the best you could do.... I lose my faith in humanity a little more each day.
And have you not noticed how copying WoW never works for anyone? And that the art style of WoW has mostly been used by cheap clone MMOs, and is thus associated with poor quality?

And instead SoE already pissed that away.
If they made THAT misstep, and show a lack of understanding ALREADY, then what hope is there really for EQN?

ROFl, so there's no hope for EQN because they decided on an art style you didn't like for their website? Ridiculous... I have no real interest in EQ unless it uses systems similar to SWG, but damn you guys are jumping to some bewildering conclusions.

Not a big fan of the art style shown.
Though its nothing that really bothers me.
I'm more interested to see how well they manage to translate that art into the game.
Say what you want about GW2, they did succeed in staying true to concept art
LOL gamers kill me man... they really do.

Who cares, we are EverQuest fans. We are free to discuss the art direction of our favorite franchise.
Also, why are you suggesting making the game cartoony so people won't leave babies in their car? The world is way over populated.
Out of everything I said, some lame ass Justin Bieber comment was the best you could do.... I lose my faith in humanity a little more each day.
You're right, I should have picked your "piss in a bag" sentence, it was so much more eloquent and refined.
And have you not noticed how copying WoW never works for anyone? And that the art style of WoW has mostly been used by cheap clone MMOs, and is thus associated with poor quality?
So very true.
Does this mean the writing on the wall is becoming clearer and louder?
Everything so far is screaming broad appeal.
Wich usually ends up in pretty bad gameplay.
Not saying EQN will be bad but yea...there you have it.
And instead SoE already pissed that away.
If they made THAT misstep, and show a lack of understanding ALREADY, then what hope is there really for EQN?
Yeah that's what we need, people to leave babies to die in cars so the world won't be so over populated... Do you even read what you type?
Sigh, and people wonder why gamers have a negative image in society and business outside of gaming.
The art was a total turnoff. I only hope that it is not an indication of the character models in game. If so eqnext is dead in the water.
Your post wasnt a shining beacon of good will either.
Do you have anything else to contribute on the art style?

Hey, YOU suggested the art style would have something to do with people leaving babies in their car. I just pointed out the absurdity of your comment
