For all the WoW bashing that goes on around here people seem to forget it has held the #1 MMO title for what the last decade?
Justin Bieber has the #1 selling record. I assume you're a big fan?
Out of everything I said, some lame ass Justin Bieber comment was the best you could do.... I lose my faith in humanity a little more each day.
And have you not noticed how copying WoW never works for anyone? And that the art style of WoW has mostly been used by cheap clone MMOs, and is thus associated with poor quality?
You honestly believe that wow's chosen art style has ANYTHING to do with it's sub numbers, or gameplay in general?
WoW's gameplay is what made it stand out in the Genre, not it's art. Why has noone been able to copy WoW's gameplay and numbers? Well because there was WoW, why would anyone switch to a copy when the original is still better.
In the case of EQN as long as they do not copy WoW's gameplay and do something original, then the art doesn't matter the masses will flock to it. If they copy WoW's art and gameplay, well why would anyone play EQN when they can just play WoW.

Uh... no. If they had revealed art that actually looked good, it would have increased my hype. Say, if they had released this for example.
but instead all the concept and video leaks, as well as the art, points this to be an EXTREMELY cartoony whacky zany not too serious game. We already have a game that covers that style, World of Warcraft, and EQNext was supposed to be everything WOW wasn't.
Exactly.
Artwork like ^this^ would have been a huge hype. There are so many new directions you can take that style. There are countless options for FV. Keep the right proportions, classiness, elegance. EverQuest is known for this style.
And instead SoE already pissed that away.
If they made THAT misstep, and show a lack of understanding ALREADY, then what hope is there really for EQN?
ROFl, so there's no hope for EQN because they decided on an art style you didn't like for their website? Ridiculous... I have no real interest in EQ unless it uses systems similar to SWG, but damn you guys are jumping to some bewildering conclusions.
It's not bewildering for people who can string a couple thoughts together.
If SoE has chosen and art, world, and combat style (over the top giant weapons and armor, cartoon stylized, leaping jumping over the top animations) that so directly clashes against what much of the sandbox and EQ fanbase has been hoping for... what are the odds they're wrong about a great many other things too?
If their big art reveal is met with almost universal dislike, and they thought everyone would love it, that shows they're extremely off base with their design thinking.
For all the WoW bashing that goes on around here people seem to forget it has held the #1 MMO title for what the last decade?
Who cares, we are EverQuest fans. We are free to discuss the art direction of our favorite franchise.
Also, why are you suggesting making the game cartoony so people won't leave babies in their car? The world is way over populated.
Yeah that's what we need, people to leave babies to die in cars so the world won't be so over populated... Do you even read what you type?
Sigh, and people wonder why gamers have a negative image in society and business outside of gaming.
Hey, YOU suggested the art style would have something to do with people leaving babies in their car. I just pointed out the absurdity of your comment
You missed the context of the statement.
What caused that back in the era of EQ1 wasn't the art but the people who took the game SO SERIOUS that they neglected everything and everyone around them.
The more people try to make games into reality using ultra realistic graphics, the more they separate themselves from real life.
A cartoon art style in this regard is better than a realistic one. Makes you less likely to make you think you are a Sorcerer of Rollos Zek or some crap and start casting fireballs at passing traffic.

If you aren't trying to mimic WoW at all, then why mimic WoW's art?
See my point?
Also your assertion that no other game has better gameplay than WoW is moronic. There were far more factors to WoW's success. Namely, marketing and timing.

Games are a visual experience, and most players consider how it looks important. The first thing you notice when you see a game is the visual aspects.
We only know a few things so far. One of them is the art direction. The person you quoted has a solid point. If the only thing released so far points to WoW, what else did they screw up? The first bits of information don't point to anything different or revolutionary.

Meh, game will either be good or bad. If it's good, I'll hapily jump into Norrath reborn. If it's bad, I'll continue to sub to EQ1. No big deal. The art is art. The game has yet to be seen. And the Dragon concept art was actually pretty impressive. And old Naggy looks great, even when Stylized.

If you actually care that much if a game is stylized in cartoon art or it is realistic, then you take games way to serious, that is my point.

It's not a conclusion, it's caution and tempering expectations. The concept art has made me consider things that have had me temper my expectations lower.
I don't like the art. I don't like the direction the art implies the game. So, my hype has gone down. Done and done.
It could be the most amazing game with the most amazing gameplay, how the world and characters look matters. I want to look the part when I play Everquest, whoever came up with the bogus idea to introduce those shoulderpads that look like landing strips in EQNext should be fired.
Amen. Look at the original concept art by Keith Parkinson. There are no shoulder pads and the weapons scale correctly. I'm not saying just go back to EverQuest 1. You can build upon his style (the one fans are familiar with). That would look so freaking fresh. No need to copy WoW or any other modern MMO. That would be making the same old game (visually), which they hinted at avoiding.
Originally posted by Margulis Question is as simple as the title states. For me personally it did, I was very put off by the artstyle and "reinterpretation". It would be easier for me to not feel disappointed if I felt it was just a few random illustrations that were not likely to be of the style actually in the game - but considering that the site originally said new concept art "in the style of Everquest next" before they changed it, and the comparison photo of the screenshot smed posted on twitter to the new art showing similar huge shoulder pads and so forth, it made it seem that is indeed going to be the style unfortunately. So for myself, it did decrease my excitement some and actually has me a bit worried about the reveal and what we will see. How is everyone else feeling as a result of the art reveal?
It is painfully obvious no one ever saw the picture of the armor models that were put online a few months back. Unless they have totally scrapped that look then we can totally stop with all these threads going over the same pointless things...
I should also say this, so others do not think I am bashing a game I do not like.
I LOVE Everquest
It was the first MMO i dug into deep, I played it all the way up to WoW's release alongside DAoC and it was an amazing game.
I also plan to play EQN when it releases.
BUT
I could care less about art direction, EQ1's art is shit in comparison to today's standards. The way I view it is ANYTHING they do to the art for the new incantation of the game could only be an improvement. I don't care if it is wow style, realistic style, cell shade or photo. As long as it isn't pacman which is what I feel EQ1 is compared to the rest of the market.
Bring it on, I just want to see the gameplay, will it be FUN! that is what I care about, can I do epic quest with friends and hunt dragons YEAH!
No. I'm only really hyped to find out what they have planned for the game. My excitement on the actual game itself (including the artwork) will come when I actually get to see it.
Yeah a little turned off, especially looking at Firiona.
Looks like this art is taking the old "album cover" concept art and applying the use of the new stylized appearance of how characters will actually be rendered in EQN. Hate saying this out loud but too bad they couldn't have just went less stylized and more cartoony, i.e. similar to the old "album cover" art.
I totally understand your opinion. You don't care about the way game looks. You just want the gameplay to be fun. I've seen a couple people on here with share your thoughts.
On the flip side, I do think the majority of fans felt a connection with the way the game looks. And a majority of players will be effected by how the game looks. In fact a lot of us were proud to be nothing like WoW visually.
Edit - Personally I felt like FV was my favorite gaming character. She stood for how elegant, mature and classy a high fantasy world could be. It is pretty painful to see her look like a childrens game.

I get that, but keep in mind, we haven't seen her rendered in game yet, what we see on paper may look 10x better in game.
I think the ironic part is that if someone were to say "I can't stand EQ, it looks so old and dated!", what would EQ fans say to them?
Graphics has nothing to do with gameplay and it's been pointed out already that any concrete info we have on in-game appearance is completely void of textures, lighting or shadowing. They could make it look darker and grittier if they choose, even with embellished armor.
This isn't the History Channnel and that armor shown is not that big. It's a fantasy game for crying out loud. I guess we should go back to armor just changing the bitmap of your character lol.
There are things about the art itself that I thought seemed out of place and uninspiring. They don't have any effect on my excitement for the game itself though.
1. Firiona Vie looks like a ranger, with ridiculously flamboyant ranger gear on. What is up with those armguards? Yes according to lore she led battles against evil on multiple occasions, so she can fight. Yet, I always had the impression she was a caster or priest type of character. She is somewhat elven royalty too I believe, she doesn't look very regal in that outfit. She is essentially the mascot for EQ and I feel that the her model in the art is the worst of the bunch. This picture does not do her justice.
2. It appears if the ogre stood up he'd be the same size as the human. Is there some reason why ogre's shrunk? To me that doesn't even look like an ogre, something more akin to an orc I'd say.
3. The Kerran is huge, his knees are totally bent and hes much taller than the human already. That guy must be monstrous standing fully erect. Why is he so much bigger than the ogre? Not only that, the armor on the Kerran looks exactly like the armor that paladins have worn in WoW. I think I recall my buddy having that exact color scheme with those same armor graphics actually, during the first expansion.
4. The human males shoulder armor. I don't think this even needs an explanation.
But I have to admit, the dwarf looks good. The (wood elf?) is proper. And generally most of the weapons look correct, except for Firiona's(I like great warhammers, polearms, giant battleaxes and the like). I would prefer that this picture doesn't end up being the box art.

its quite alright to feel a bit uneasy.

I m curious to see how will look trolls.
