Tell me how to sell this game to my friends

etlaretlar Member UncommonPosts: 863

Most of my friends are either

A: in wow now.

B: stopped playing mmos due to lack of good mmos we all play .

im trying to get them to try this, some of them are even old ff fans (the single player games) most are just wow players.

but i cant even get them to download the game, even when i say its open beta soon, just try.

I cannot see myself playing this game alone, i want to share it with my friends, i know one is a sucker for lore, that might help, but they all seem soo reluctant and claim well u said WAR and u said AOC  and then u said SWTOR and now u say  f f14

some weird japanese game??

how do you get through to YOUR friends, and tell them to join this world with you?

Edit: spelling in the "headline"  +  do you show them videos or what do you do?

    Open beta.

Play together & see how you all like it would be the best way, unfortunately it sounds like a tough sell.

Edit: My friends got beta keys so it kind of sold itself to them.

    Good luck.

Make a cool gameplay video of your self playing showing the best things about it then show it to them I guess.
  • MithrandolirMithrandolir Member UncommonPosts: 1,701

I gave my friends beta keys, all but one preordered after playing it for a while. That one is still on the fence, he'll be playing open beta as well. I'd rather them make up their own minds. I have no issues if they find that a game that i like is not for them, in fact we all prefer it happen sooner rather than later (and at a higher cost)

Open beta is the way to go imo. If they won't even try open beta, probably better not to push the matter... again this is all my opinion. Good luck no matter what!

Honestly I don't know. I tried the game and thought it was pretty solid, not for me, but solid. I think most people at this point have dismissed FF14 completely and have no intention of trying it if they have not already. I am sure some of the burned FF14 players may be turned since they get some free time, and hey why not, but I don't see FF14 bringing in numbers that are anything but soso by today's standards. Quite frankly I would be amazed FF14 even breaks the peak numbers 11 had.

MMO player are not very forgiving, especially when subs are involved.

sounds like a good idea, though i have never recorded anything in a game, dont even know the programs i need :)

(sure my rig can handle it though)

@ klepto yeah, apparently tougher than it should be, but i guess years of many mmo´s "failing" to deliver what ppl exspected might be a reason :).

@celcius quote "MMO player are not very forgiving, especially when subs are involved." i think the first part, is too true, seems like humans a creatures if habit, afraid to try new things once accustomed to something they have done for 8 years, or left for behind, for that sake.

  • etlaretlar Member UncommonPosts: 863

I hope more people join in, and tell us how they make their friends join their worlds, since (besides from the fact its interesting) i would love to know ;)

dont really matter which mmo, actually, just show me the trick ;)

(not sure if im allowed to post 2 in a row, forgive me)

I always find it weird that half the people I try to convince to go back and play an MMO that has gotten much better are willing to pickup old games that are not MMOs which they quit due to boredom. MMO stigma should hopefully go away this generation, but I think most developers are even scared to tout a game they are creating as an MMO. Can't say I blame them, but I really can't stand the bad stigma associated with MMOs due to a few bad apples. I mean really alot of MMOs we have gotten the past 5 years or so havent been that bad. There are people out there who enjoy them. I think the AoC/War days of outright flops are going to be less common going forward.

My general strategy has been to always talk about the game and how great it is. Talk about it enough and they will eventually cave.

ARR's slow retro style combat is meant to appeal to a very specific demographic, this game is clearly not for everyone so don't be to down if you can't convince them.

That being said I think your best bet is to concentrate on the mindblowing graphics and never needing to make alts to try out all the classes.

i would love to add more here, but i agree on most parts, but i dont think developers are scared to call them mmos, quite the contrary actually, its become a misused term, that "in turn" scared the real mmo´s away and gave leeway to  the multitude of of "mmos" we now see today, where thye all try to grab a little while they can, and for ot the main idea, to create a virtual world.

    wow, rant, sorry celcius! :)

Er, what - I'm assuming you're talking about the friends of yours who *aren't* old FF fans with that second line; they must have been hiding under rocks if they've never heard of the final fantasy franchise though lol...

My friends were luckily all aware of Final Fantasy, and had all played FFXI at some point, so it was really a matter of saying "It's like XI, but...(better in x ways)". One of those descriptions was something like "It's like an HD FFXI with a battle system that took a lot of cues from WoW's." Coming from the perspective of your friends, they could at least understand an approach that compares it to WoW.

Honestly, a big part of FFXIV's selling point is that it has the charms of an FF game. If those charms are lost on your friends then I doubt they will play. Still, you might be able to get them to try open beta and see, if you figure out what they might be dissatisfied about with WoW (even if it's just that they would like something new and different).

Other points that might be worthy of comparison to WoW (in favor of FFXIV):

    -Promise of a better community

-Promise of a more challenging game overall, including endgame

-You can play every class - every role - on one character

-More traditional class progression system (No talent tree system that Blizzard can't seem to reach a state they are satisfied with)

-No Add-Ons (this might be a point in favor, or against the game, depending on who you're talking to - the point in favor would be that there is bound to be less community focus on the numbers you put up and more about whether you're overall a good, and likable player)

-3-way Realm vs Realm large-scale faction PvP on its way soon

-PvP where you earn points to actually buy PvP-specific abilities (some of which have effects that change depending on which faction you belong to) along with PvP gear, creating your own build; there are a form of arenas besides the faction battles.

-Beautiful HD graphics on a well-optimized engine that can run the game looking great even on mid to lower end PCs (or they can get it for PS3, eventually PS4) - if they get it for PS3, it is already well known for having one of the best control schemes for such a game on a controller.

    -Deep, complex, involved crafting system

-Greater variety of leveling content (where WoW just has you choose between questing, dungeon-grinding, or PvP to level, FFXIV offers several more types of XP-granting lines of content beyond these, including guildhests, guildleves, Trials, the hunting log, etc.

I'm sure there are more (favorable) points of comparison worth talking about, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

P.S. My friends were wowed by the trailer titled 'Exploration' - which I showed them in tandem with the 'job' trailer. Maybe that would help?

P.S.S. Actually seeing the game in action, and even better, actually playing it, is the best method of convincing oneself, for or against, about whether one should play the game, rather than just hearing a list of features.

lol, im afraid you might have hit it, for most part at least, what happened to explaining game systems and worlds, going to follow this one up with the one who proposed a gameplay vid of me playing, dunno how though :)

Sure, go ahead. If they are starting to budge but are worried about money - as someone else mentioned, the box is only $30, and the sub is $13/mo and you get the first month free, not to mention 'early access' if you preorder, plus characters that carry over from the open beta - this makes it relatively a bargain for a new AAA MMO - it might be worth mentioning (once they are already mostly convinced).

    It's 30 bucks with a free month.

  • etlaretlar Member UncommonPosts: 863

@ Twrule, fortunelately i live in denmark, where we are not scared of subs yet (though i see the trend in all my "younger" ppl around me, namely, the teenagers, who prefer f2p. :)

not sure if i should put a smiley there, since it might actually be sad lol.

yeah true, and as twrule mentioned, you get the open beta without wipes, so as i see, its win/win try or leave, for free :)

    edit: i think i just made a salespoint, +1 for me ;))

irony can occur, but this is not the case! :)

Here's how I get my friends to move to a new MMO with me.  First,  I buy and play the game,  make sure it's worth sharing.  If you make your friends play SWTOR, you're going to have a bad time and get a bad reputation.  So,  you play the game,  and if you are having fun with it,  you bring it up often in video game conversations.  But,  make absolutely sure that you are in fact having fun with it,  and still not high on hype.  Once the honeymoon phase is over, if you are still talking about it and actively playing it,  your friends will probably join you.  and if not,  you will probably have made new friends already on the inside by now.

    OR  Option 2

Tie them to a chair and make them play.  Give them food and water only when they have reached certain milestones.

  • RidelynnRidelynn Member EpicPosts: 7,383

A lot of people will stay away from this game just because of the 1.0 launch, and unfortunately, there isn't going to be much you can say to persuade them otherwise.

I think the soft sell is the only approach that will really work here. Open Beta will be the best shot, since it's free, and once that passes just have to let word of mouth go and let the game stand on it's own reputation: ~If~ it's that good, people will come, and it will be in headlines. If it's just mediocre, it will stay open for a good while but we won't see any real growth.

If it's bad, I don't know what S/E will do - probably ask everyone on the dev team, past and present, to seppuku.

shit, i just spilled beer over my keyboard!

but i have to say, this one: If you make your friends play SWTOR, you're going to have a bad time and get a bad reputation.

is probably my achilles heel (sp?)  cause i got my whole gf´s family to buy ce edition, we were 12-15 ppl, we all left....

    might be that also :)

edit: the only game is was so disapointed about, i gave the ce figurine away to a random kid, who became so happy he cried, so im happy too! but today the game is ok, if u know what to exspect and NOT to exspect :) stil a mees even though i sub. bu thats another story :)

I would have to agree with making a short vid, taking some screenshots & linking some trailers. I've done that in the past when I was participating in betas & it worked out pretty well.

Oh, and if all else fails, find a fun LS/FC to join & make some new virtual friends.

So far, even though it's beta, the people I've run into have made my social experience in this game a good one.
