.... you’re going to wonder why everyone else at the convention is walking around in a daze with a slack-jawed look on their face for the next few days. Yes, the shock really will be that great. While we can’t say anything about what we saw, I will clearly state here that I predict EverQuest Next will be as much of a game changer as the original EverQuest was. Feel free to quote me on that any time.
This, on top of MMORPg's "head and shoulders above" and "pants pooping" and TTH's "hands down the best game" pretty much has me bewildered.
What can this beast be? Discuss.
This is pretty dangerous of them, because we all know how high a gamers hopes and expectations can become, filling in all the blanks with their wildest dreams (and lets face it, our dreams can be pretty wild) and its going to be almost impossible for any game to live up to what we have in our heads. So we're all going to be pretty disappointed when it doesnt live up to this huge hype, and then, no matter how good it really is, we're going to be annoyed, fustrated, and peed off.
These writers who have seen it went in with zero expectations, and were clearly blown away, but had they gone in hyped to the gills expected to see the greatest MMO in history, I seriously doubt we would have them printing the stuff they are.
I'm going to wait for the announcement and try to imagine it just going to be another EQ clone, and hopefully whatever it really is will be more impressive.

I think I've figured out the mystery, dandurin. And, it also explains why we've seen no video leaks, etc.
(drum roll)
The game world is entirely VR(Virtual Reality). You don't just play this game, you live it!
I haven't posted or even bothered to login to this forum in a long time, but when I read your post the whole senario of Smedly stepping up to a podium, flanked by computer screens and surrounded by SOE and EQ banners and logos popped into my head, and I laughed a little.
With the crowd waiting, he says and dose the following. "Hello everyone. I will now give you a small preview of our long awaited and ground breaking MMORPG, EverQuest Next!" (Smed makes a bunch of screeching and buzzing noises with his mouth) "Okay, I am now inside EQ Next!" (he is still just standing at the podium looking around) "Holy geez! I wish you people could see this!" "Ah, it appears I am in the Butcherblock Mountians, home of the Dwarves, and here is one now. Hello Mr Dwarf!" (Smed waves) "These graphics are amazing!" "I think I have shown EQ and MMO fans enough to tide them over for now" (more mouth buzzing and beeping noises) And I'm back! My goodness, what a trip. No questions please. Thank you for watching. (he leaves the podium)
In EQN, your character isa voodoo doll extension of you. You get stabbed in game, you bleed and feel the pain. You get laid in eqn? Well, lets just hope you're not at the supermarket when this happens.

Ha! That would be the greatest trolling of all time!
Since I created what amounts to a hype thread, here is what TTH said about two other E3 Best In Shows:
Picking this year's Best of Show Award was a surprisingly easy task.
Sure, there were tons of great games, many of which were deserving of their own awards. Heck, many of them got their own rewards.
But at the end of the day, we simply asked ourselves: Out of all the awesome games we got to see and play this year, if we could only take one home with us to play right now, which would it be?
....we all agreed, and thus the Ten Ton Hammer Best of Show Award of E3 2011 goes to...
.. Every time we play all we want to do is play more.
Sure the graphics are great, the world is begging to be explored, the story is captivating, but it all comes down to the simple truth that is fun. The action based combat and the sheer joy of successful co-op group play makes this game an easy winner.
And another year:
In previous years, selecting the game that deserves our Best of Show award has been a surprisingly easy task, and this year was no different.
there were plenty of amazing titles this year – many of which won awards of their own – one game was a clear standout in numerous ways.
...this year’s winner was so fun that we even made room in our busy schedule to go back and play through a full demo session a second time.
... this is the game that (studio) was always meant to make, and the developer has gone to great lengths to insure (it) is the most compelling game it can possibly be.
... The approach to a more action oriented gameplay is spot on, and offers the most intuitive combat system our industry has seen in a very long time, if not ever.
... is packed full of awesome and we can't wait until gamers can get their hands on it.
Make of these what you will. How do they stack up to EQ:N hype?

I can't wait I hope they are right but I still don't believe them. Tomorrow will come soon enough.
"The King and the Pawn return to the same box at the end of the game"
Just the announcement that it's FTP shows that SOE is listening to what the market "wants" (and I am firmly in the camp that the monthly subscription model is better, but I understand when I'm in a minority).
SOE being FTP doesn't have anything to do with what the market "wants", they do it because it's worth it financially. Smedley explained not long ago that only 10% of PS2 players spent money in the game, but the other 1.6 millions keep the game entertaining for them so it was totally worth it financially. If PS2 wasn't FTP, they would lose players among the 10% (because there are less players in the game) and they would have none of the 1.6 millions players around...

I am not a fan of PS2, gave it a try and I love FPS games, just doesn't cut the bread. To buggy even still today.

Ummm... the market (100% of players) wants to play for free (90%), and the market wants to buy a bunch of crap (10%). You just argued with me while proving me correct.
Originally posted by Onomas Heard this all before on the past 20 so called game changers, epic mmorpgs, and wow killer claims from multiple game companies, blog writers, and game web sites. I will be the judge of this one, still no hype on my end, I have been highly disappointed at the garbage coming into the industry this last 5+ years.
No, they mean it when they say it will be a game-changer, it'll be a game-changer just like SWTOR was, meaning another MMORPG with a huge budget that will make whatever remains of this industry go toward more simplistic F2P cash shops. Get that Rage of Bahamut money! Yeahh! Woo!
That's the reality of it.
After this game comes out, this forum will be flooded with people who say "lol you trusted Smedley? After SWG?!?!"
Originally posted by Rydeson Didn't we hear this about SWTOR too.. That 4th pillar fell down.. lol
It didn't just fall down. It fell sideways crashing into the 3rd pillar and causing a rippling domino effect through the others, thereby, bringing the whole roof crashing down.

I sort of like PS2, but I have to agree. That game was insanely buggy and beta-quality. Didn't PS2 also have a massive memory leak to boot, iirc?

Originally posted by Pyuk SOE better pray that it will be a positive game changer. I've a feeling this is a do-or-die title. If it flops, I've a feeling SOE will be no more.
Why? They are making money with their other titles you know.
