I'm watching the videos just now, what are they talking about.

Vindictus has destructible terrain, the landscaper is just like Minecraft, the combat didn't seem special at all, looked like WoW.

What's so innovative about this title that was going to revolutionalise MMO? Seems like pretty run of the mill to me.

Umm. didn't you watch the video? The 4 holy grails.... that's innovative.

you realise they have all basically been done before right?

But Blizzard does this and everyone claims WoW is original and innovative.  They take every cool new whiz bang from new MMOs and the MMO world goes goo goo over it.  The hipocracy just astonishes me .

While I don't read a ton of forums (actually only this one), I can't think of more than a handful of times I've ever read that WoW was original and/or innovative, and those people were quickly bashed into oblivion.

Vindictus was a dreadful anti-MMORPG MMORPG, this is a problem right there.

Played the game for an hour and realized that for the same experience I could be playing a solo player game with better gameplay.

People are still clinging to their dying MMO devotions.  Look at SWTOR, even though the engine blew chunks, people still claimed the game was top notch and ran perfectly.  Denial, then poo-poo other games when fighting a losing battle ..

The PvP side and the (Generally Shallow) PvE side. I hope they can change this trend but the PvE in most F2P mmos is absolute garbage.

Also the fact that nothing about the game in its current state actually says mmo. As it currently stands from what they have shown it currently appears to be an online hack and slash game with a few rpg elements thrown in. Again I will reserve judgement until they actually show us a bit more than a few tech demos but I was very underwhelmed. At first I was very high on the "fully destructable" world  but after a bit more thought about it wouldn't that lead to some of the ugliest areas ever seen in gaming?

Why isnt it an mmo? I mean its going to have a massive amount of players in a persistant multiplayer online world thats a sandbox where people can destroy and build what they like.  It will have npcs that can go anywhere they please in the world based on their nature.  On top of that the world is seamless not just on the surface but even going multiple levels under the surface of the world.

And I didnt know RPGs are suppose to have a specific style of combat because the first Mass Effect had third person shooter style combat and still an RPG because you could develop your characters role based on a class and the items you get,  Elder Scrolls has hack and slash combat and thats still an RPG, Final Fantasy series had instanced turn based combat and thats still an RPG.  EQ Next from what they have revealed so seems to have more depth in role playing than most mmos.  How many mmos out there have 40 different classes that you can mix freely once you unlock them to have the specific role you want?

I see where you went with that but generally in an MMO you would need a large group of people to accomplish goals or at least a party. This is all subjective and this part is my opinion but there are a lot of current games that are mislabeled as MMOS. Just because there are a ton of people running around hacking and slashing things SOLO does not make a game an MMO.  It seems that once they began to make MMOS more accessible and widened their "Target audience" they lost touch with the most important aspect of MMOs which in my opinion has always been interaction with other people teaming up and overcoming obstacles together.

More often than not current MMOs feel like single player games which just happen to have other people inhabiting the world with you. I could get on DCUO,GW2 or Tera right now and never deal with another person and still get anything from the game I want. Hell there is no reason to actually team up when I can just que up to do something in DCUO and still get whatever I want in the game anyways...... isn't DCUO made by SOE also? Yea it is...... this is directed at the other guy who basically said this game will be instance free. I will believe it when I see it..... if there current MMO is even remotely similar you will be highly disappointed.

Please do not take any of this the wrong way, I have signed up for the Beta and hope that this game will be good. I have my reservations but as I have said numerous times now I will wait until we get some sense of actual combat and a few other things cleared up before I truly weigh in.

Edited to correct a few things its 2:am and I should be in bed.

exactly what i been saying, they're making single player online games where "you are the hero" i dont want to be t he hero, i dont want to feel special until i've accomplished something, i dont want to get free gear from completing quests, i want to earn my gear, i want to have to be in a group composed of different builds to make up what my class doesnt bring to the table to overcome obsticles, i want crafting to matter as it stands at the moment feeding you gear through quests has made crafting redundant.. none of you people seem to realise this isnt an MMORPG in an MMORPG you arent a powerhouse of domination where you can take out everthing solo and win, you need to be in groups to accomplish meaningful tasks or even just to take on large packs of mobs, because if you're not you're gonna have a bad time.

The character animations looked good but the fighting seemed bleh.

There's two big differences between EQN's rally Calls and Rifts/GW2 Dynamic events.

    1.  Rally Calls lasts months not 15 minutes.

    2.  Rally Calls do not reset.  They forever change (majorly change) the world on your server.

I watched the twitch tv segment on EQ1 and EQ2; those 2 games are still planning to go strong.  EQ1 is ready to release it's 20th expansion.  EQN is definitely not trying to gain ground with EQ1 and EQ2 players.  I know for myself I'm saddened by the lack of talk about PvP so far, but I also had a hunch that EQ1 and EQ2 players would not like this game.

SOE is trying to spread their game styles around and not just rehash on their old ones.  One of the big points from the EQ1 update was how they have updated the graphics over the years.  So many players from EQ1 have been clammering for an EQ1 remake with better graphics, instead they are getting EQ1 with better graphics; kind of makes me chuckle.

It does seem they are going after a more casual crowd.  Only time will tell if they make enough of a profit from EQN, but the other games that have been casual over the last 5 years have fallen over on themselves.

There is no way this is possible in EQN, I am betting is a type of phasing overlaid on the real world that resets after a respawn period. Or that the destructable terrain is only in specific spots where there is a need for it. At the end of the day when all is said and done. It's going to be another one of those .........yawn....."innovations that's great for 10 minutes then it loses it's "shiny".

    This.

They said during the show that the terrain will 'revert' back to its previous state.

Its all superficial layers, you cant really change the world on a permanent basis like they told you in the presentation, only via those 'set pieces' that are called public quests and even those are predefined.

I completely failed to see the sandbox elements personally, sandboxing is a part of the gameplay, not part of the terrain composition.

They also completely failed to mention crafting or economy.

After what I saw, its just 'another mmo' with more superficial layers, its ironic we shout at them for giving us the same game year after year, they tell us its completely 'brand new' 'innovative' 'never seen before' and all those other sexy words the marketing departments have been shoving down our throats for the last 10 years and EQN does exactly the same and presents a game we have all played in one shape or another, saying it brings all the best elements of other games together does not make it 'brand new' or 'innovative'.

If you can't see that this voxel engine is an outstanding revolutionary achievement in the game technology department then you must be blind beyond hope to a cure!

I am a very experienced when it comes to creating 3D worlds, and even to me there were only a few hints in the Feerrott scene (the "pixelated" structure of the floor at some spots) pointing to the well hidden fact that this isn't a regular hand-crafted scene, but a world fully made out of voxels. So you can imagine that I am really impressed by the outcome, the destructibility, the flexibility, the dynamic... the potential is huge and we've only cast a little glance!

This tech is a quantum leap in game technology.

    Before we had either:

    1. Beautiful, hand-crafted scenes, but total lack of interactivity, dynamic, flexibility. It was static, boring and dead.

    or:

    2. Editable, flexible, player-influenced scenes, but with a great lack of visual appeal, because the tech could only render big blocks (sold to the audience by labeling it "retro-style").

Now we have both in one and the same game.

That's a revolution and will change games even beyond the MMORPG genre.

    Amylion.

Others just shoot the zombies which are chasing us. Whereas I try to talk to them.

If the brainless realized that it is dead, maybe, just maybe, it would lay itself down to rest...

Theres plenty of voxel based mmo´s out there which are allready in playable state and they dont call themselves "revolutionary" but for some reason you want to call eqn for that ?

Many more but I'll mention the main one, maybe two.

First, Overland content that has two month long "events" "rallying calls" what ever you want to consider them, that can turn out different than other servers.  Not just hoops where the end result is always the same.

Second, Procedurally generated underground content that has lore tie in and can be four levels deep.  This content lasts for a time before "shifting" and it changes.  It's all destructible so you can be mining for something and find a hold to an underground temple.  Next month? gone.

Third, a world that "remembers what you did" and things are closed off or opened up because of it.  Example, if you help orcs instead of the farmer they are attacking you wont be able to be a Paladin before you "redeem" yourself.  You wouldn't know though because class open opporotunities are different for each person.  Also, a world where NPCs have "traits" that they react to such as orcs moving camp if they get attacked too much.

Fourth, 40 classes to search for and unlock, not knowing specifically how because again it can be different for everyone.  Mix and match skills from your known classes/weapons and no auto attack.

Essentually, if they pull this off it will be as close to a "living" world as anything else out there due to random systems coming to logical conclusions.  Again, IF they pull it off it's stuff we truly haven't seen before.

And the devs for Planet Explorers don't recommend going over 8 players! My god man.

    2. Editable, flexible, player-influenced scenes, but with a great lack of visual appeal, because the tech could only render big blocks (sold to the audience by labeling it "retro-style").

Now we have both in one and the same game.

That's a revolution and will change games even beyond the MMORPG genre.

Theres plenty of voxel based mmo´s out there which are allready in playable state and they dont call themselves "revolutionary" but for some reason you want to call eqn for that ?

Can we get a few examples? Only one I can think of would be CubeWorld an it is only planned to go the MMO route eventually, and only if the designers/coders can do it.

    for example.

    http://planetexplorers.pathea.net/about/  alpha.

    http://www.starforge.com/ alpha

So your definition of "plenty" are two indie games in alpha? :P

BTW, Starforge will only have a multiplayer of 16 people... MMO?

And the devs for Planet Explorers don't recommend going over 8 players! My god man.

Im sure you can use google.

And atm eqn can go co-op ?

Anyways, its nothing "revolutionary " atleast yet.

So, did ESO have a successful launch? Yes, yes it did.By Ryan Getchell on April 02, 2014.

That we can create craters in the world? Which eventually go back to normal.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

I can use google, maybe you can't mate?

The dev's stating how many players are possible with those two indie titles, compared to EQN which we know is classed as an MMO.... You can fight it all you want mate, but I'm afraid you are just arguing to argue now.

And about the first point... it's simple, there's no MMO allowing to do that, and their "smooth voxel" engine is also nothing short of amazing.

    Agree with Jean-Luc.

I'm actually in shock at the amount of privileged MMO gamers there are nowadays, these features shown in one presentation were fantastic, interesting, unique to the genre and just looked impressive. Yet the whining is surreal, I've never, ever seen things as bad before this year with the PS4/Xbone moaning, and now this. Absolutely incredible, makes me ashamed to be a gamer.

As far as I'm aware no MMO has pulled that off. Very little of what they showed can rightfully be called a rehash. Whether it is actually fun or good is another question, but it's definitely not a refash of any MMO I'm aware of.

multiclass - FXIV maybe not on as grand of scale, but still multiclass

destruction - vindictus... again not on as big of scale but same thing

AI - this has been promised time and time again and never delivered not to mention the slew of issues that can arise from trying to structure your AI in this way, simple quests bug out for no good reason and now you're throwing hundreds of variables into the equation.

rallies - rehash of DE / rifts

still just another single player online game, not an MMORPG... have i forgot anything?

I am affraid you hit the facts right up.
Once you look trough the honeymoon moments and dig trough the presentation many things are (borrowed) from already excisting mmo and poured into a new jacket.
While some stuff did look insanely epic, many more thigs i disgust :(

8 action skill bars......ffs pls no more :(

100 men zerg boss battles....been there done that on GW2 / Rift :(

cartoony characters....i can dig it, but iam not to happy about another cartoon styled mmo again.

No mention of pvp....makes me very worried that it will be another WoW / GW2 / Rift copy paste battleground / instance crapped bot or zerg incarnation.

I think these are my biggest concerns with the presentation.
After all the words from the intervieuwers who where present at E3 i expected a totaly new platform of mmo design.

Something that realy wasnt created before, but it turned out not to be that.

Maybe we jump to conclusion to fast, but many of us played mmo's for around 2 decades now....
We have seen mmo's come and go in rapid succesion, and we all taught EQN would just blow us away on every level you could think off.

I realy had the feeling of looking to a action rpg solo game more then a immersive mmo.

But i still hope EQN can prove me wrong, but to many oh god no moments occured already and that will make it very hard for them to turn me over to a pinked dressed 6 year old ready to be taken to candyland. and i ment this in a good way !!!!!!

This whole EQN thing is really interesting to watch. The number of people that are actively looking for reasons to reject or play down the game is incredible. Meanwhile, you get a do-nothing heap of crap by a guy that has proven he has no clue what all is even entailed in what he's talking about creating, and no only does he get a barrage of praise but people throw money at him each time he posts another grub campaign.

Does this mean that anywhere in the world if I dig a 2 foot ditch I can go play in the subterranean world?  I hope not.. Last thing I want is a game world that looks like player made swiss cheese.. Personally I think entrances into dungeons and caves should be traditional.. However, I'm all for destructible walls that might reveal secret rooms or hallways..  Or npc mobs that go anywhere they want in the given world based on their nature.

I like the idea of roaming intelligent AI mobs.. I still have a soft spot for static locations on a limited bases, or at least static regions.. But this will be interesting to see how this new AI works out..  I am excited about voxel building as the "server" world grows.. I hope the Landmark thing continues past EQN game release..
