Reddit asks Terry Michaels Questions: Trinity, Boats, Classes, PvP and more

TelondarielTelondariel Member Posts: 1,001

I just caught this article from a tweet from Brasse.

Cassandra Khaw from USGamer arranged an interview with Senior Producer Terry Michaels and Programmer Steve Klug.  They thought they were going to get a standard interview, but in a 15 minute flurry, Cassandra bombarded them with some of the top questions from Reddit (at that time).  Very interesting read.  I don't think they were prepared for the onslaught.

First person view! Win! It just wouldn't be EQ without it. I can't believe GW2 wouldn't even let you zoom in for a screenshot.

I really love the dev team. They take their fans seriously. Even if they can't please everyone - they listen and respond. Just look at Rosie on twitter and at the panel. She is constantly trying to explain why they went for a stylized approach.

Anyways, first person + orculus rift = heaven. Just imagine digging and falling into holes while using the rift. OMG

    I can't wait...

Love the PVP slip up, and them basically saying that housing was not instanced. At least that's what I took from it.

This part stuck out to me as very interesting...

"Right. So, Reddit asked about the potential of falling into a hole that you open. Will it be instanced exclusively to you or can anyone jump through it?"

"It's a part of the world just like the surface of the world." Michael affirms.

Then, Klug says: "They can see him do that and jump in right after him."

"Yeah! They can jump right in and be like, 'Oh, my god. I am going to save you!' or 'Oh, my god, I'm going to see what you just found and try to take it from you"

SOE should sell plots of land, or rather, sell flags that let players claim plots of land to build on for real money.

    And have real money upkeep... or else, oops, it becomes.... D F R E A K I N S T R U C T A B LE

I think the OR in EQN would be the first time in video game history that I would prefer a first person perspective. Its been a dreadfully terrible experience up to the point IMO, but OR could change that.

    Nice post.

Great that they have first person view. Regarding opulus rift havent tried them yet, so dont know if 3rd or person view is best. But first lets hope they make OR work well with EXnext and that the comsumer version of OR is finished when this game is released, Still think it wont be released any time soon. One thing that bothers me ..if i use OR how to find any buttons on my keybord. Do i have to memorised them, i am to old for that :)

Hah I knew they would have owpvp. They are just trying to build pve hype before announcing it. Tbh the game just wouldn't work without it.

It will be gated open-world-pvp... as in, you rent parcels of land for real money ala-2nd life, or else your land is open to invasions.

Followed the link to the Voxelfarm site and was impressed by the videos on the front page.  Really looking forward to getting my hands on Landmark and building stuff.

No tanks no healers, you can play a warrior with shield and sword but he will be the same as in GW2, better of going full dps with full dps gear or your gimping yourself, your group, your raid.

    So disapointed :(

This intervieuw showed me what i feared the most.
Twitch combat - zerg style pve - no social backbone required.

I hoped i was wrong, but it seems EQN is another flavor of GW2 with many extra's, but a GW2 version in regards to PvE / PvP / classes.

hate me bash me hang me on the bridge if you want for saying this.
i just hoped after playing GW2 Developers saw the flaws in GW2 and wont build on those flaws for a new mmo.

Hope i can still play this game, but i think it goes the same route, play for 1 hour and logout to play something else.

They told use not to compare it to Gw2, but just how am I supposed to not compare it to gw2 when what is being described in interview after interview is without a doubt the same trashy group combat system gw2 uses...

Won't need any roles for any content, honestly.. Its sad to see SoE go from being the kings of encouraging grouping to see them end up butchering any hope of meaningful grouping, If everyone in my group serves the same purpose as me they might aswell be ai.

Sad to see promissing and innovative features overshadowed by this kind of rubbish.

That was the impression I got from that little PvP slip.. And in my opinion, if they are designing this game as OWPvP destructible  twitch combat, I can't even begin to see how LOW the account numbers will be.. This is NO where close to GW2 now.. It sounds pretty much Planetside 2 with swords.. This is one hell of a gamble that SOE is taking, we'll see if they stick to their guns, or change their focus later down the road..

All that quote told me was that OWPvP would happen in some places, most likely on a PvP server.  I agree with you though, it would be crazy for them to do it on all servers and would go against everything else we've seen so far.

The reason that it is better to go Greatsword pure damage Warrior in GW2 as opposed to Mace/Shield Control Warrior in GW2 has nothing to do with the lack of the holy trinity.

It does, however, have everything to do with the fact that stunning mobs is useless because of Defiance, the lack of challenging AI, and ArenaNet ignoring one-third of GW2's trinity (support/damage/CONTROL).

Please, GW2 is not a zergfest because it lacks the holy trinity, it is a zerg fest because ArenaNet are bad at designing a game without the holy trinity.

I'm interested to know just why the game wouldn't work without PvP? If mobs are coded to be "smarter" on a sliding scale and have classes themselves (assuming the abilities as well?), needing PvP for exciting and challenging content seems to be less.  Add on top of that a constant risk/reward factor for what you do in the world. Unless it's the destructible environments, which IMO the ability to knock things over is only one of many great things about the world being made of "sand".

I'm usually involved in PvP because it's the least boring thing to do, it can be quite exciting.  Since hearing all the details about EQN it's been the farthest from my mind because there seems to be enough excitement to be had already.

I thought of that too.. BUT..  wait for it.. wait for it.. If they were talking about PvP server, why would the enemy even consider "saving you".. ?? that was the catch..  So it makes you wonder, at least for me.. I'm not sure that EQN is going to differentiate between the two now..

Permanence is a grey thing." Klug retorts.

"We've talked about the fact that people's changes to the world are different based on where they are in the world when they're making those changes. Whether you're in a part of the world that you have control over. Whether or not you're in a part of the world that nobody controls. Or if you're in part of the world that we deem to be significant for our directed story. The permanence will be different based on where you're doing things." Michaels says.

So does this confirm some form of territory control :)

I'm not sure either until official word has come through.

As far as the article, this quote:

"Yeah! They can jump right in and be like, 'Oh, my god. I am going to save you!' or 'Oh, my god, I'm going to see what you just found and try to take it from you'"

Sounded like it came from the interviewer, not the devs and it was before the question about PvP even came up.  Even if the quote did come from the devs it doesn't seem to be a PvP reference at all.  The term "saving you" could be from whatever is in there such as teh Void Goliath.  The term "seeing what you just found and taking it" would be trying to get him down before you and loot what the Goliath has.

T me it sounded very much like there was going to be some form of open world PVP but they are not allowed to talk about it.. the guy basically accidently confirmed that there will infact be PVP.. but of course they did not let slip any more than that.

Still have to wait and see.

    True too Aelious..

At this point I think this game is still very much of  "we don't truly know what the hell we are doing"  stage.. Everything is left open to interpretation and in itself works as the perfect market hype machine.. It keeps people like us yapping, discussing and arguing over stuff.. ALL the while keeping the game name active and in the News..  I'll keep tossing our my voice in hopes that things will change, because I don't believe ANYTHING right now in EQN is set in stone.. The devs will design this game in the direction that blows the most..  Currently on a scale of 1-10 (10 being most likely) the odds of me playing it, even tho F2P, is about a 4..  IF SOE wants me to tilt my score to 6 and higher, they need to work harder.. lol

Edit: funny thing is, prior to SOE Live, my rating was an 7 or 8.. This past weekend cost them a shit load of points and hype..

Not sure why any one believes open world pvp would return in this next gen era of casual fuckery.

Casual players dont like Open world pvp. There is no way in hell pvp ina casual playground like EQnext will exist outside of battlegrounds, or whatever the fuck SoE decided to call their battlegrounds.

True.. good observation.. It just dawned on me , that as Ael was pointing out that maybe the comment of "take it" was implying ninja looting something.... BUT then why did they immediately disclaim they can't talk about PvP.. OOOPs.. Was that not a freudian slip that "take it" is PvP centered?
