Everquest Next - What do you think?

WhitesoulzWhitesoulz Member Posts: 27

First off, this post is to strictly be about EQ Next. image

I was a long time gamer of Everquest and entirely love the game; however I am curious to everyones' opinions of EQ Next and how it will possibly change the genre of MMORPG and the style.

EverQuest Next is a complete reimagining of the EverQuest Franchise. Old friends and enemies will appear — but they may not be who you remember. With 10,000 years of explorable history buried beneath its surface and a future you will shape, this is your Norrath.

A Few things that EQ Next has to offer: image

Destructibility - "Everything in EverQuest Next can be destroyed. Crush the ground beneath an enemy's feet — or bury him under an avalanche you created. The world is your weapon."

Intense Multi-Classing - "Our character classes are streamlined and designed to be mixed. Want to be a teleporting rogue or a backstabbing barbarian? The choice is yours!"

Open World Events (Dynamic Events that months to complete) - "Your choices will rule your destiny. Do you save a villager's burning farm or choose to do nothing? Do you clear orc camps away from Qeynos or help them destroy the city? You will make your own story — and shape the world for those who follow you."

Permanent Change - "The land of Norrath changes every day, based on the actions of all players… including you. Cities rise and fall, kings live and die, even the gods may change. You won't want to miss a moment of it!"

Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Monsters aren't static. Orcs will venture out to a road where they can ambush people from the bushes to kill them and take their belongings. However, if the roads become stagnant they move to a different location with more people.

I am quite excited about the game; I think I'll even dual-box when it first comes out. :D

I plan to keep this thread as up to date as possible as I think this could be the next BIG game :D and I'm overly excited. image

I'm very intrigued being an old EQ vet myself. But I am also very cautious and skeptical. After all...it's Sony.

    Time will tell.

Waiting for EQ Landmark however and pretty excited about that. I love being able to build stuff myself.

    What I think?

Too much hype. It's been announced for years and all of a sudden here's another hyped game.

I was excited about it then, but after hearing how unconventional it'll be, probably won't even play it now.

I am completely the counterpart.. i was not really interested in EQ3/Next until the Sandbox announcement, and even then i had my doubts about SOE really doing a sandbox game.

But as i heard the SOE Live presentation, and that it is acutally unconventional, and that it really will be different, and will introduce a few new things into MMOs(like voxel/destructabiltity, emergent AI, landmark etc.) i was really bought.

Now it is time to wait and look for more detailed informations, because up to now we do know just a little bit about the basics, about the tools they use, and about some technics, but not a lot of detailed informations.

Nevertheless i eagerly await Landmark and EQN afterwards and what it really brings to the table.

PS: The reason is.. i was always more of a UO fan instead EQ fan during the EQ vs. UO era.

I can't say much since I haven't seen any lengthy gameplay yet.

    • The destructible terrain sounds interesting, if done right and not just as a gimmick.
    • Multi-classing... doesn't tell me anything really. I would need to fiddle around some builds first.
    • Events are the next step from quests. Was to be expected.
    • Permanent change? -Meh.
    • Your short bit about AI basically tells me that the mobs roam. Not much more than that. I bet they will behave as dumb as ever when combat starts however.

I'm expecting it to be another casual gameplay -focused game with a P2W payment model and some destructible stuff in the world that is advertised now as something ground breaking but probably wont make a big difference in the end anyway.

Really, my expectations aren't very high. Looks like just another F2P MMO of this era.

I'm excited about all those things listed above - all their "core" or innovative things sound great.

What i don't like are the things they're copying from other games like the cartoony WoW / Wildstar type character model graphics and GW2-like non-trinity combat design.    The character models are already a major turnoff, while the combat design remains to be seen.

The multi-classing is also a lot more limited in reality than what their PR makes it sound like.  You can only switch out 33% of your abilities, you can only switch those abilities to SIMILAR abilities from other classes and you're always defined by your "base" class no matter how many abilities you switch in.    It still sounds fun, but it's not a very open system that truly allows you to build any character you want.

My views are due to how SOE works. They can be quite innovative, but remember EQII, and their idea of making the game CPU processed, not GPU processed, banking on processors exceeding GPUs in crunching numbers.

Innovation is nice, but stray too far, the game becomes old before it's time, even.

Everhype Next is a big IP, it's way too soon to gauge how good a game it will be and with cartoony graphics it has set itself a high bar to be seen as AAA. That's about all I think anyone can say at this stage in the games development.

My personal opinion is that half the stuff they say  their game will have, in fact won't.  It is common of SoE from past experiences to lie in order to hype/sell there product.

One more thing i can say. It is F2P so there is no reason why i shouldn't check it out.

I'm apparently not in SOE's target market for this game.   And the lack of details over basic game concepts and the all-too-frequent 'Not ready to discuss that' answers given at SOE Live leads me to believe this game is at least 2 years in the future.   There's not even a single image of the basics, like opening inventory, or character stats.

In two years, I'll make the determination to play or not.  Before that, it's rather pointless.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

I like a lot of what I have heard and seen so far.  I'm just going to hang back and watch the information come out over the next several months before I even begin to draw any conclusions.  I have better uses for my brain cycles than pretending to fully understand a game for which only a fraction of information  has been released.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

They made it quite clear at SOE Live that they didn't want to release all of the information about the game all at once.  That's called marketing, and it's a wise business move, especially since the game is still being actively developed and is incomplete.

We're going to have Landmark this Winter, and then EQN is going to continue development all through 2014.  If we're lucky, we will get it by Christmas.  That's over a full year of development, alpha and beta left for them to work through, and that's assuming it releases in 2014 and doesn't get pushed.

Sit back and relax.  Obsessing over details you don't have and won't have until they put them out, is pointless.

Everquest Next should do just fine, as long as they can actually do what they say they will.. Cautiously optimistic, but no wool over my eyes..

Some of these features have been thought of before (or are currently being designed), so hopefully they implement them well enough.. Destructibility, Multi-Classing, Dynamic Events, and advanced A.I. are all good things if pulled off properly.. Permanent change, however, I have strong doubts about.. Players can't be trusted in my opinion.. heh.. I guess we will see..

The design ideas are very exciting. The reality of how well they can execute, as always, remains to be seen. Ask me again in about 1 year ...

    I think I need a beta invite... :)

So far, I'm having trouble finding any Cons for myself. Looking for a game that provides exciting, challenging, continuous adventures without a clear "end." They have some great ideas/tech and the EQ IP to work with, hopefully they take risks and make a product that will be a success for many years to come. Nothing else out or on the horizon offers me anywhere near what EQN is promising. If they can deliver on a decent amount, it will be great.
Really looking forward to multi-classing, I hate alts and refilling, looks like they have me in mind. Also having to discover quest and dungeons underground will be a lot of fun without all the usual handholding mmos have today.

I agree.. I"m surprised at all the hype this game is getting..  It's just as pathetic as SWTOR 4th pillar BS..  I was critical about TOR, and it looks like I wasn't far off.. That game crashed faster then Rift did.. LOL   Getting all excited about EQN would make as much sense as getting all dizzy over GM's new 2019 Corvette..  I'll wait till it hits the showroom floor.. tyvm :)

I salute them for wanting to take the franchise in a different direction, but I have major doubts on if they will be successful.

I'm surprised people have so much time to dump on a game they seem to have no faith in and zero excitement for and feel it is their duty to bring the rain cloud over those trying to discuss something positively. With your logic, there is no reason to hype or get excited over anything in life, that's pretty sad. I'm a gamer and like to discuss games and get excited when I see something I like. Thought that was the point of this site and this particular forum. Guess I missed the memo that said this site is for bringing the doom and gloom and dismissing everything a company reveals since they only lie. Since one game failed, all others must as well.

Between those exited and the haters, seems those staying positive have a much calmer and less dizzy outlook on what is going on. Don't see anyone crazy exited ready to stop eating for a week to play, but plenty ready to picket if they don't get their way.

I am also pretty excited about this game.  I have totally stopped playing MMOs because they have just become way too repetitive and pointless.  SW:TOR was fun for a bit but need a lot of polishing, etc.

I am definitely going to play landmark when it comes out this winter and by then we will have a better idea of how the game itself will be...

It is going to be a much more fast-paced game than EQ1, so dual-boxing may not be very viable.  They are going for a more action type combat and, unless you are really quick, dual-boxing probably wont be very effective.

After 15 years I think I have killed every possible creature with every possible weapon in one MMO or another, eqnext crafting with eqnext landmark is where I expect I will be most fulfilled. My only concern on this front is the Player Studio, which in games like eq and ps2 require a 3rd party app like maya to really create unique looks.

I have to say I am looking forward to SoEmote as well, while watching youtube vids of it in action in EQ2 is not comforting. I believe that a game built with it from the ground up has to have a much better quality.
