It goes on to talk about how your "password can be guessed"...well, it's a lot more sophisticated than that, but common used combinations (especially actual words + numbers ) can be found pretty easily. Without lock-outs for numerous attempts (instead  of a lock out they use bot-stopper crap that has been around for years) it makes it a lot less secure on their end.

The whole "blame the customer" thing is so prevalent in mmo's...I wonder if other companies are taking note. Just look at this thread...how many people put the *entire* responsibility for this on me, and zero responsibility on Square Enix ? Not even a hint that maybe they messed up too..just the customer.

Because that has exactly happened. In the past year various online games have been hacked! And if some of them (Especially F2P games are Notorious for it) have crappy serurity messures on their account database, then they now have a ton of accountnames and passwords.

And THIS is exactly the problem how People get hacked! People use the same accountnames and passwords everywhere!

Public forums, fan forums, guild forums are Notorious of being hacked all the time and Guess what? People are using the same passwords there as well!

You can´t make it any easier for hackers this way.

SE technical staff currently sees hacking attempts on their account systems and games With hackers brut forcing passwords.

So they warn People about it!  What should they do? Keep quiet about it and let even more People get hacked?

It was the exact same when Diablo III released!  Tons of accounts were hacked and Blizzard issued the exact same statement where they saw hackers using account/password lists to brute force passwords to get into people´s accounts.

Put a Security token on Your account! (Software Version is FREE!) and you are safe!  It´s so easy to do and prevents you from getting hacked!

There are literally seminars of how passwords are a bad security designs. They are not secure. Not in times when you can literally program GPUs and have brute force speeds 150 million attempts per second and that for a single 200$ GPU. 2-Way security is what has to happen everywhere. Maybe even face recognition. But those silly guidelines they have for passwords are just ridicilous. The least they can put an IP Address block. Or...since you use their client, it could sent some unique token that's generated off of your hardware's serial numbers with added entropy, this way you would have to grant access to every computer of yours. This is still, not a perfect solution but a hacker will have to try really hard to get into your account.

That I don´t understand tho why SE hasn´t implemented yet.

In Guild Wars 2, everytime you log in from a different computer or Your IP address changes, they send you a Security code via email, which you have to enter on your account page to authorize the New computer / IP address, before you can log into the game.

This is very good security messure to implement, next to Security tokens that can Virtually put a stop to account hacks.

I've seen a lot of hacking going on. Over 50% of the "spammers" I block in game have a "legit name" as in they seem to be names someone actually gave them and then they were hacked.

Couple that with these threads about being hacked, lead me to the decision to activate the physical security token I got with my Collector's Edition of FFXIV Reborn. I've never ever been hacked, but yeah, better more safe than sorry.

I mean what the fuck, aren't you supposed to reverse engineer like ... most of the game's protocol ._. Given it should be encrypted and whatnot and the way all packets are orginized its literally fascinating how many "good" programmers there are doing stuff like this xD

Packets are not normally encrypted because

1> Routers are kept simple. Making operation like encryption requires routers to be more complex.

2> Imagine routers having to decrypt the packet in order to look at the destination and TTL and then encrypt it again to send to the next hop. Repeat that for the next who knows hops...

Complexity = time sink = congestion = Loss of resources

I think you should refrain yourself from making smart remarks from something you don't know. I'm sure those programmers know a lot more than you ever will.

I'm using their mobile authentication. So ... each time I try to log from unathorized computer I need my iphone to generate security tokens xD which are valid for just a day or two. Idk exactly, it's Google Authenticator

It is a far better game compared to GW2 (in my opinion of course), FF and it refuses to use item mall; that's enough for me.

What I do know for sure about protection: if you fail writing your password like 5 times , you are lockout from the system for X minutes before being able to try again. Happened to me several times due to accidentelly having caps lock on.

Bots (as in farming bots) do not need to directly rely on packets at all. It is enough that the client itself gives them enough reliable information and then you just use appropriate script to respond to the information.

    :D LOL

Every packet is encrypted with different algorithm. I happen to have written a private server so yeah I don't want to get banned for cursing in the forum but you can go you know where :)

Take WoW for example. Open the C++ emulator and check the networking. Open the Lineage 2 Java server emulator, check the networking again. Not to mention that figuring out OP codes and packet lengths is a science on its own. Not to mention that WoW implemented a dynamic OP codes and they change the whole protocol with each patch, that is why you won't see Mists of Pandaria emulated anytime soon.

Not every encryption algorithm is a slow one. Keep that in mind when you grants us with your fascinating opinion. Go read about Blowfish, come back and apologize

P.S: Lineage 2 force closes your client if you sent a packet that you are not supposed to send.

Ofcourse the problem is being blown out of proportion by People that are being hacked. They are frustrated, angry and try make the problem as big as possible.

I have been playing so many online games since the 90´s, have accounts in so many games, forums, online shopping sites, etc.

If the problem would be as huge as some People claim, then the odds would sertainly be against me and I would have had at least a handful of accounts hacked in the past decade or so.

Like anyone here is ever going to admit they used bot software, illegal macros, fell for a phising scam, used RMT services or use the same simple password for years all over the internet and as result got their account hacked and/or banned ??

    No, ofcourse not!

It´s much easier to position yourself in the victim role and vent Your frustration and anger against the game Company and blame them for Your own ignorance!

The only security is the user's password, which could very well be "123456". And there you have it, an account gets hacked. No malware bullshit, no keyloggers, no wiretapping. Simple as that. Not to mention that probably SE didn't implement a "ban for XX minutes after XXX failed attempts and notify the user to change their password" system. It's pitty. I hope they've taken more serious steps in ensuring their user's data on their backend in case of hacking. I really would hate to see the events that happened to PSN an year or 2 ago

And just to rub more salt to the wound, a B2P title (you would expect less of them since its not P2P) already has all these protections :))) I can literally give my account email and password here in these forum for my Gw2 account and NONE of you will be able to log in. But yeah, keep supporting P2P for the "premium" service xD

If what SE is doing the past few weeks is a "premium" service, I don't want any of it. They actually made an iOS app while having shitton of issues to solve :D

Um *cough* have you ever actually checked that "Item Mall"? Or you just diss a game because it has one? xD The item mall doesn't lock you out of ANY type of content.

There are varying degrees in which an item mall is annoying.

GW2 does not commit the biggest offence, i.e. Pay To Win item mall.

So here is a list of negative aspects of an item mall and how GW2 does in those:

    1. Pay to Win; No!

    2. Item mall being connected the ingame economy; Yes!

    3. Item mall affecting at least one focal aspect of the game itself: Yes, namely vanity (which is one of several foci in GW2).

It is important to point out that vanity is not a focus in neither League of Legends nor Path of Exile and I can for that reason accept those games selling vanity through their item mall.

ArenaNet stopped illegal RMT, by implementing it themselves.  People seem to forget that. See Your point 2. Yes!

You can just buy gems With "hard" cash! and then covert it directly to ingame gold! And so buy all Your gear and items straight from the Marketplace!

If that is not Pay 2 Win... then I don´t know what is. lol.

For the rest it´s a great and fun game tho!
