This whole thread is like..a microcosm of politics. There's a minority that try to defend the customer, a horde of big-business supporters that violently lash out and blame the customer, a third group that is somewhat rational, but still siding with the big-buisiness, and then a fourth group that is talking about an entirely different an unrelated subject.
Believe it or not..no, I didn't try to buy gold, or sell it. I didn't try to "change the game code" or use 3rd party programs. I simply logged in..played the game since beta 3 with the same name and password and was hacked.
My password wasn't great, nor is my username. It was a hold-over from Beta where i didn't care what my info was, I was too slow to change it. I admit that, but sorry I still pay for the product and as people have already stated, basic security protocols aren't being taken by SE in the first place. I had no problem with them freezing my account, I appreciated that. What I do have a problem with is the ban and the subsequent lack of response I've received thus far (not even auto-mated) after I followed the instructions they gave me to get the account unfrozen. (including the one-time key)
Lastly, those of you claiming you've "never been hacked"..that's not because you do everything right and everyone else does everything wrong...get the f over yourself. It's a numbers game, and you've been lucky so far. In 16 years I've been "hacked" 4 times. Three times on WoW in quick succession, where they very rudely told me to buy their authenticator (*Buy*), and now here. I've played...EQ,Eq2,UO,FFXI,WoW,Rift,SWTOR,EVE,WAR,Neverwinter,DDO,LOTRO,Vindictus...etc...etc and the only games I've ever had problems with are WoW and FFXIV.
Not even when SOE had that massive attack..did I ever have my information compromised, it's similar to personal health..you can do everything right and still get cancer, you can do everything wrong and live to be 100...there's a luck factor that seems to be ignored.
Lastly, I wanted to point out because it seems to have gone unnoticed. I AM NOT BLAMING SE FOR GETTING HACKED. I do think their security relies far too heavily on the user compared to other games, but that's beside the point. Instead, I am upset with how they have handled it, their sham of an "investigation' and the subsequent banning of my account when literally all you have to do is look at the IP address used to access the account during the suspicious activity. I have never been banned from a game, and I find this utterly ridiculous.
But go on, tell me how you have no sympathy and that it's my fault. It provides me with entertainment while I wait to see if SE releases any press releases or actually kicks back a response to my support requests. Oh and continue to defend the big companies..it'll make it so much sweeter when you realize they don't give a shit about you
I don't think you understand.
This isn't about white knighting for SE. This is the simple truth that they are doing what they have to do. Your account became compromised. There are 2 parties involved. You and SE. Was SE's database hacked or your account? Anyway, back to my point. You account was compromised. So what' SE to do? What should they do? Answer that?
I'm just happy they are pulling these compromised accounts out of the game. Unfortunately, what happens after that is not so fun, or easy, but it's better than the alternative where they don't give a shit about what's going on in their world.
I'm almost willing to bet that no one has ever had their account "hacked".
I said it in another thread, but it warrants repetition. The virtual currency market is a billion dollar a year industry. Yet, "no one" ever buys gold. Every time a new MMO launches, after a few weeks large groups of people are "hacked" as if hackers are like, "Hmm, hacking these passwords would take all of a few minutes since computers these days can brute force even the most complex passwords in minutes because of the number of calculations you can do per second . . . but let's wait for 2-3 weeks before we start hacking."
It's not that I don't believe that there are some legitimate victims, it's just that . . . when you say fat people should exercise, you always get people claiming about thyroid issues. But when you look at population statistics, less than half of a single percentage of Americans have those thyroid problems while close to 40% of adults are obese. Someone is lying. You're less likely to ever meet someone with thyroid problem in your entire lifetime than you are dying in a car accident after work on any given day.
So when it comes to these "I got hacked" threads, it's not people siding with the corporation, it's people pointing out that someone is lying. They're either lying about buying gold (most likely), or they are exaggerating their internet savvy and did, in fact, get phished.

The OP has admitted he used a simple username and simple password.
So in his defence, it is more than likely his account got brute forced hacked.
So for the OP it's a tough and painful lesson learned to use a better username and stronger password Next time and also taking a look at the Authenticator option.

I still don't think there's an incentive for gold farmers to use hacks/scripts like brute force. Phishing and letting people sign up on their gold selling websites is so much easier. They'd have to get through all the people they catch that way before needing to resort to more invasive methods.
It's not that it can't happen, it's just probability. I'm not going to go pick apples at an orchard if people are willing to leave apples on my doorstep.

Did you expect anything different on these forums? It seems that those that blame the user here are perfect and have never been hacked or have never played a game that had sub par security for their customer's accounts. It happens to everyone eventually no matter what you do. And if they say it wont happen to them... They are fools and don't deserve your time. I hope it all works out for you in the end, I would simply not play ever again if it were me.

Just checked Mog station. You get a CAPTCHA prompted after several failed attempts.
So then its much harder to use brute force scripts against at least the accountpage.
So the way that Square Enix is handling their recent spate of hacking is to blame the players apparently..

So..yeah..that part about "reviewed for accuracy" is particularly annoying..because distinct IP addresses would clearly vindicate me if they actually put any effort into their "investigation".
I ran into so many problems with SE for FFXIV that I will no longer buy or play any game they have on the market. I did do something some what smart though. I bought the disc at Walmart. So I can return them, they won't give me my money back for the games but they will exchange them for the same game new disc. I am about to put the new un-open disc on ebay for 5 dollars less than retail. Sure I'll lose about 15 bucks when they are sold and shipped out but it's much better than losing 70 dollars on both a ps3 and PC disc.

lol wow, maybe you should also worry about all the other accounts you use the same username and password on, just saying
i never use the same username and password twice, it's exhausting but I have to do it because for some strange reason people tend to get really pissed off at me. I can't imagine why...
This company has no customer service. First, they could not change my beta account that was EU to US(no idea how it got that way) so I lose my beta characters. And now they refuse to help me with putting my code in the wrong place and starting a new account within and account. I didn't even know you could do this. I had so much trouble getting a code to work with there retarded websites it was a simple mistake. I was trying lots of stuff. I purchase the game again so I'm out of my preorder money. They are ripping me off. Now they want more money when my time expires in 20 days or so. Fun. I hate them. Love the game though. They took so long to answer my ticket. I should just give up the game. I would just give up if my account was hacked. They don't help people.
Some of you people are amazing. Really? It's SE's fault someone got hacked. It's YOUR account. It's YOUR computer that got hacked. SE didn't give away your info - YOU did with poor security and computer habits and usage. SE has nothing to do with security on YOUR computer or how YOU use it or how YOU secure it. The usr/pwd you gave them is (theoretically) safe with them - but they have no control over whether you've "given" that usr/pwd to who knows how many other people.
Why should SE compensate you in any way for your own fail? They could do it out of the kindness of their heart, but surely they don't owe you a damn thing unless THEY got hacked and lost your account info, which isn't what happened.
It's a bummer to get hacked, for sure (not that I'd know since it ain't happening to me, but I've known plenty of people that have been hacked) but blaming everyone else and looking for handouts isn't the answer. Learn, man up, and make sure it doesn't happen again by being responsible, not by crying about it and blaming unrelated parties.
There are so few details here. Just someone looking to blame anyone but themselves. Typical nonsense.
What is most likely here is the OP bought gil and/or gave away their account info, and/or surfs questionable sites, and/or has virus/trojan/keyloggers, and/or uses the same username and pwd for multiple sites and games with a few of THEM having been comprimised, and so on. Ie,use poor security and web practices and habits and you greatly risk getting hacked. None of which have anything to do with SE.
BTW, your bank analogy sucks and doesn't remotely compare. How about taking $100 in cash and just set it down somewhere public and walk away. Then go ask your banker for a replacement $100. See how that goes. But, but, it's YOUR fault that I "lost" my $100! Really!
I'm no fan of corporations but blaming SE for this is comical.
Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.
Moreover this is suspicious. Topics like this are popping up the last few hours all over the internet (see the topic "I am done" on this very forum) and the official technical support forum. Just yesterday they put out a notice about improving the security of accounts. Coincidence? I would bet that they had a security breach but would be too much of a PR hassle to admit it at this time.
Exactly. It should already be clear to anyone who plays or is thinking about playing that SE is incompetent. And hell, this still won't even affect many people's decisions to play anyway, as the game itself, as a good, is quite fine. But the awful launch issues, the sluggish response to provide a solution, and now this deliberately impartial witch hunt of hacked accounts, clearly demonstrates SE's inability to handle its own product and customer satisfaction. Even if the cocaine is good, why would you buy it from the shadiest dealer on the street?
While I haven't had any issues personally. When I saw all the gold spam start showing up I ordered a one-time authenticator just in case .
For the record if you don't want to buy one there is a phone app one but I don't like those because it's a pain if you forget to disable it before switching phones.
It's your own fault you got hacked. You either visited a shady website and got a keylogger, gave account info to other people or tried to buy from a gold seller. Yeah, it's your responsibility to take care of your computer and account information. [mod edit]

I have indeed never been hacked.... ever, for 20 years, from UO to FFXIV, I have never ever had a single account flagged or hacked in anyway. I have been suspended or temp banned from games for my attitude, like telling a GM to his avatar face to face in EQ1 to go f*** himself, but not from a super hacker Jonny Lee Miller or Angelina Jolie.
I simply do the following, use a very complex password that is easy to remember but hard to crack.
Also I have a hw + sw firewall that protects the gaming pc. All of my shady practices are done from separate pc's. for example torrents, ripping, file transfers, anything I need to do that might cause me problems later. These pc's I don't worry about I move data around and if something goes awry I just wipe the drives and start over.
Stay away from illegal activities on your gaming rig, eventually it will burn you.
Go get you a nice hardware firewall, back that up with a good software firewall, then invest in a good anti-virus, maleware + spyware program. Run these often (daily if possible) and enjoy life.
To say that EVERYONE gets hacked, just simply is not true.

They cannot change Your account from US to EU to JP and visa versa! It clearly states so on the game Box you buy!
Each region (JP, NA and EU) have their own range of Retail keys. Your account is locked to the region in which Your country resides.
This is nothing New and is very common in so many games! Come on now! I find it a bit childish to lash out at Square Enix like this, like it's something New and evil.
It was the same With DDO, LOTRO, WAR, AION, WoW, CoH/CoV, etc, etc.
I will just ignore the trolls and/or company sheepdogs that think us as security idiots or scummers and post an update for OP and the others with similar problems.
I was finally able to contact their UK office and after answering correctly to their security questions, they said that they are gonna forward the problem to the office in Japan since it seems they are the only ones who can unban an account. When asked about an eta they couldn't say if or when the problem will be resolved.
And yet, having 2 sometimes 3 accounts per game, and having played EVERY MMO since NWN on AOL
I have NEVER had an account hacked.
Wonder why the hell that is...
You're lucky?
I've played zounds of MMO's and also all the Blizzard games and I've never been hacked, either. For some reason, though, I don't have a desire to put people who were not so fortunate down with it.
Most of these things happen due to poor security management. Nobody in their right mind should rely on the user for security. Most users don't know enough about security to be viable (this probably includes you).
Favorite MMO: Vanilla WoW Currently playing: GW2, EVE Excited for: Wildstar, maybe?
Simply put, be careful with what you download and make sure you have a good password set up for your account. Sounds to be YOUR fault. Seriously people, lets stop complaining about the company when its YOUR FAULT for being hacked, not theirs. You can call them up to complain and they will restore your account, likely emphasizing you to use the One Time Password thing on your phone or the token since your careless with your information and what you download.
This whole thread is like..a microcosm of politics.
Oh and continue to defend the big companies..it'll make it so much sweeter when you realize they don't give a shit about you
Stop trying to buy gold from websites.
Sincerely your friend Bill.

Yeah, becasue nobody registers IP address locations, and can confirm that during the time of the offensive behavior, the IP was logged in from a country other than where the account owner is.

Since it has direct baring on conversation:
I ran into so many problems with SE for FFXIV that I will no longer buy or play any game they have on the market. I did do something some what smart though. I bought the disc at Walmart. So I can return them, they won't give me my money back for the games but they will exchange them for the same game new disc. I am about to put the new un-open disc on ebay for 5 dollars less than retail. Sure I'll lose about 15 bucks when they are sold and shipped out but it's much better than losing 70 dollars on both a ps3 and PC disc.
[mod edit]
lol wow, maybe you should also worry about all the other accounts you use the same username and password on, just saying
i never use the same username and password twice, it's exhausting but I have to do it because for some strange reason people tend to get really pissed off at me.
Example: !@#rFvcDe <--- something like this.
Favorite MMO: Vanilla WoW
Currently playing: GW2, EVE
Excited for: Wildstar, maybe?

Stop trying to buy gold from websites.
Sincerely your friend Bill.
Either you are trolling or you didn't read the OPs post. The OP claimed to have gotten HACKED - and that's something that the user support can not verify. Either they trust the user's explanation or they don't.
Yeah, becasue nobody registers IP address locations, and can confirm that during the time of the offensive behavior, the IP was logged in from a country other than where the account owner is.
Oh wait.
